Throwing Copper is a forgotten 90's masterpiece.
I agree. It is the soundtrack to my high school years. But it still holds up in my 40's.
@@oatz00 I was 22/23yrs when I first heard this band/song in 1997 & I'm still in my mid 40's now, so how old were you when ya finished high school dude? Sorry if its too nosy a question for you.
@@aryansigrid I was 15 and in highschool as well in 1994 when I first heard of them and I'm 41 years old now. Whatever he said tracks.
And it's amazing how it is a somewhat forgotten album after selling almost 9 million copies in the U.S. alone. One of my favorite albums to this day. I was 14 when it was released in 1994 and think it spoke to a lot of us because it was "ours." Nevermind, Ten, and the Seattle scene was just slightly before our time. Albums like Throwing Copper and Sixteen Stone by Bush were the next big thing that we could call our own. Saw Live and Bush on their 25th Anniversary of Throwing Copper and Sixteen Stone "Alt-imate" tour a couple years ago. Amazing fountain of youth type show!
Agree.
the irony of a couple thousand people singing I Alone in unison is fantastic.
Been there. Done that. More like 20,000 people. Nothing like it! Got to have beers with Ed Kowalzyk after the show too
Huge Irony!
Mind you there are the people who can feel very much alone in a crowd.
@@iamtheking9418 I am so envying you sooooo hard right now. I've been such a fan of theirs since Mental Jewelry.
Wow I can’t believe you’ve never heard of them... you should really just listen to Throwing Copper this afternoon such a good album
All their albums are great.
Throwing Copper is still on my “desert island” list.
I’ve still got all their CD’s somewhere, will have to dig them out and have a listen
At least gotta check out Lightning Crashes!
Give "Throwing Copper" a listen. Huge album, surprised it wasn't a UK thing?
They have a song called Lightning Crashes. It was one of the biggest songs of the 90's.
Absolutely. Amazing Song
I was going to suggest that. I think you'd LOVE Lightning Crashes
I was going to mention this song as well
Same here, lightning crashes should have been done on here, that song will give you the feels
That's my dad's favorite song. He requested it be played at his funeral
Their album “Throwing Copper” is one of the best albums ever. I put it right up there with Pearl Jam’s Ten.
Absolutely.
Better
Secret Samadhi is much, MUCH better
Ooooooh
Ed Kovalczyk, one of the greatest and under rated singers of the 90's grunge rock era.
So easy to forget him when he should be there right there besides Cornell and Staley. Fortunately he's still alive.
When Run to the water is probably is most emotive and difficult performance.
Also When Dolphins Cry.
They were a 90’s Alt band. Their song Lightning crashes is by far my favorite of theirs. It’s a beautiful song.
I second this 😉💪🏻🔥
It was one of my first favorite rock songs along with Losing My Religion by REM.
What is that song actually about?
@@danieleyre8913 it's about the transference of life; picture a hospital where life and death happen simultaneously
@@TheIggymeister Really? What pretentious wank…
It's live like alive not live like living. And they were huge back in the day. Throwing copper is their most well known album and the whole song album is very listenable.
Throwing Copper is Excellent. Saw Live in 92 or 93 on that tour.
@@iammelting awesome! I'm only in my twenty's, but my dad said they used to play that album in the barracks when he was in the marines because the whole album was good. And they called it the Baby sh*t green album.
Man, there needs to be more reactions to this band!
You've never heard of their biggest hit Lightning Crashes ? Wow! They've sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Their most known albums are Throwing Copper(1994), Secret Samadhi(1997) and The Distance to Here(1999), all of these have reached platinum status in terms of sales.
Throwing Copper is such a great album!
I am so glad to see someone reacting to Live. Ed Kowalczyk has such a distinct voice, and sings with such pathos. He is by far my favorite singer of the 90s. You'll see a lot of requests for Lightning Crashes, and the Throwing Copper album. And, you definitely should react to it...oh, the feels. But, even if you don't do reactions to the songs, you should listen to their first album Mental Jewelry for the sheer poetry.
They did an UNPLUGGED for MTV for Throwing Copper that is a MUST SEE
Throwing Copper is one of my favorite albums of the 90's. So many huge hits on it: Selling the Drama, I Alone, Lightning Crashes, All Over You. All songs charted pretty high even in the U.K
Reliving my teens and feeling old at the same time...
We're probably around the same age as your comment made me laugh and cringe at the same time ha!
I was lucky enough to see them live back in 99. Great great show
Ed is one of the great rock singers of all-time. “Pillar of Davidson” is my favorite song of theirs by a country mile.
Love that song. It's a masterpiece, the way it builds up all the way through. Always leaves a really 'epic' style finish!
Here, here!
Favorite track off of Throwing Copper (even though that whole album is great.)
Agreed. So good.
Oh yes, "Pillar of Davidson" definitely was my go to song on my CD track once I got home from work. The song is a Trip, my favourite song on the album.
I absolutely love "Hold Me Up" as a close second; it was left off the commercial release, but you could find it on bootlegs.
If you're not familiar, luckily Live released it *officially* for the Throwing Copper 25th Anniversary.
You may have heard that track in a movie called "Zack and Miri Make a - - - -"
(Had to edit my original response because UA-cam either didn't like the direct link to Live's channel for the song, or the missing word.)
My ex-wife and I saw them a total of ten times back in the day. A GREAT band, both recorded and live.
Hearing and seeing Ed sing in real life 6 feet away from you is insane, his voice is really amazing 👏
One of the greatest live bands and what an album Throwing Copper is. Damn !
Beth is absolutely the cutest. Her smile is pure sunshine. She brings so much joy to her videos. And my god shes beautiful. She doesnt get enough credit.
Very true :). Thats how I ended up here, the still for the video had a smile, and I was sold on that alone lol good thing shes sweet, cool and personable, to back that smile up :)
I've been listening to them for a long time, and I never realized how much of a fantastic frontman/showman he wasO.O
Treat yourself by listening to more of their music, absolutely brilliant. They are the foundation to my love of music as one of the bands I loved by myself, as opposed to the music I learned to love from my parents, if that makes sense lol.
The 90s greats are such a welcomed flashback. LIVE was the sh^t!!!!!!!
I remember coming across Mental Jewelry in the music store in the early 90s. They let you put it in and listen to portions of it. I heard a few seconds of each song and was amazed it was all mind blowing. The mix of sounds and influences were so rich - it was like nothing else I'd heard. Throwing Copper was good as well, as we see here. But Mental Jewelry will always be my fav. Epic band for all time.
I had the Throwing Copper CD on repeat for the entire last six years of the 90’s. Such a great album! Thanks for reacting to them. I love your perspective every time.
It totally is 90's rock, they're considered a local band from where I'm from. They were my very first concert, actually in 1995 (The Throwing Copper tour). I love them, and still have their first album completely committed to memory. Thank you for this.
Great 90's rock band. They had one of the best MTV Unplugged episodes. Worth checking out, for sure.
Live Unplugged was amazing.
unbelievable@@Linkous12
They were HUGE in the US in the 1990s. The Throwing Copper album was epic. "I Alone", "Selling the Drama", "Lightning Crashes"... so many good songs.
Great job voting for this one, Patrons! Beth ABSOLUTELY needed to experience LIVE (pronounced like "I've"). Definition of the 90s - you couldn't turn on the radio and not hear this or one of their other singles. Yup, we all know all of the words and he wouldn't have to sing this song at all - the crowd can do the whole thing. They are still THIS GOOD in performance today - go see them next time they tour, everyone!
I can loop this and another song called lightning crashes all day. This is such a great band. That's not backing vocals btw, that's the audience.
Live is one of the best bands from the 1990’s. Love this song as well as Lightning Crashes.
The venue by the way, looks like it could be the Paradiso in Amsterdam.
I have also seen Ed Kowalszic (hope I spelled that right….) solo at a festival. He also is fantastic just by himself.
Great singer, great voice.
They were huge in the 90s. Throwing Copper was the first CD I ever owned.
Crazy that you hadn't heard of them before. This band was massive when I was in school. Got so much radio play. They're so good.
One of my favourite bands from the 90s. So powerful! Their next album "Secret Samadhi" was even more innovative. And they changed their style with every album a bit.
Live is such a fantastic band. Their album mental jewelry is possibly my favorite album of all time, though their most popular album is throwing copper which is an incredible one as well.
Mental Jewelry is in my top 10 ever...agree its better than TC
"The Beauty of Gray" is one of my all time favorites off that album.
Brothers unaware and the beauty of grey are the best on that LP imo
totally love mental jewelry too. Massively underrated
Awesome band, blistering track, all 5 album's are well worth a listen, they were so young when this was released, it was a real shocker 🤙👏
I watched Ed's solo show here in Brazil and it was amazing. He's a great vocalist.
Throwing copper is a great album, such an underrated band.
Love to see Live over here 🖤 Dolphin’s cry or The beauty of gray are very good songs too
Yes! Yes! Yes! Favourite of all time. Massive almost everywhere but here!!!
Ed is putting out some absolutely incredible music even still.
Live, as in playing live, and they are awesome!
Same gig they done Lightening Crashes. It's amazing, the crowd sings along and everything. It's worth a check.
Dear Beth,
Thanks for reacting to one of my longtime favorite songs. WHoever suggested it, ty also.
Was afraid you'd think it a bit cheesy, it was fun for it's time. I still listen to the entire Throwing Copper record when I can. You might enjoy it.
cheers!
Live is pronounced as in "alive" and they are a US band made it really big in the 1990s with this song. Sometimes compared to U2 in terms of musical style.
Not as big in the UK but big following in Europe.
Never heard the U2 comparison. I don’t see it.
Saw them a couple years ago. Eds still got it.
Beautiful, talented and you can appreciate good music...you are impressive Beth!
Won tickets off the radio to see them in concert around the time of their second album. Their encore was an incredible rendition of Stairway to Heaven.
Live at the Paradiso is a must have dvd. Pure brilliance
Yes you MUST do "Lightning Crashes" its by far their most raw and soul-bearing song and he gives EVERYTHING he has to his voice in that song (by Live! - pronounced as in 'they played the concert live on tv')
one further...one of the most creative ...and one of my most favorite bands of all time...and i am old...love...
One of my favourite bands from the 90's, Ed Kowalczyc have a great solo album too. See him live, was a great show.
First concert I ever went to ...I was 15 & with a small group of friends in 1999. Been to at least 20 different concerts since & they were by far the Loudest! The atmosphere was insane, I still haven't felt anything like that since.
You should hear Lightning Crashes from the same live show. Brings the crowd to tears !
One of my favorite non-metal bands of all time. Every album is worth a listen.
They rock! We love +Live+
I always wondered how to distinguish LIVE when typing about them it's the +LIVE+ That was missing.
I never understood why this was their first big hit. I always thought “Selling the Drama” was the best track.
Ed is the greatest rock singer of all time.
Every Live song is great keep digging.
I’m so mad that I never knew you reacted to my favorite band!!!😳🤘🏻🙌🏻 glad I saw this now though!
Called Live because they sound the exact way live when they play live. Great seeing them live! Lol.
Live (sharp I) was a 1990's powerhouse. They put out four amazing albums from 1991 to 1999. All of them were amazing in their own right.
Beth, it's been said already. You MUST listen to the entire "Throwing Copper" album. It will make you a fan of LIVE, guaranteed! Funny thing is I'm not even that much into the rest of their albums, you can pick out a couple of good songs from each. But "Throwing Copper" is one of those rare recordings where every song is a killer. It's one of the most consistently powerful albums of the 1990's and also of all-time.
Hello, Listen to: Live - Pain lies on the Riverside
LOVE that one!
Love Live. One of my all-time favorite bands. Been to countless concerts and they are a top 5 show.
It's Live, like in LIVE from. And OMG I havent heard them for 15 years. It was the time of grunge, my fav from the album was Lightning Crashes. Back then I was a roadie for Madrugada, and since I could do vocals, I suggested boldly to Robert Burås (RIP) that we do a cover of I Alone. So from playing in a tribute band for 50 people, I was on stage in Oslo before 7000 singing I Alone with my good friend Sivert Høyem, Norways best voice. It was electric
Amazing!!
Live was my first outdoor concert experience at 15 yo in 1995. PJ Harvey opened. My older sister (10y older) took me.
Wow! How'd I miss this? I reccomended this one to you, Beth, a while ago. I'm glad we fans agreed! This band is one of my favorites. As people have said, please do listen to Throwing Copper. That's the album this song came from. 1994. Lightning Crashes is a beautiful song for sure. Thanks Beth! All the best.
Lightning Crashes, their presentation at the Paradise in Amsterdam is epic. The entire show is a must watch.
Thank you for bringing Live back into my orbit. I had forgotten about them. I’m going to listen to Throwing Copper right now.

Much more than most, Ed Kowalczyk sings with his eyes
I just found out Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads produced Throwing Copper. He did an incredible job.
I thought that John Paul Jones was the producer for this album, but I just checked my copy. You are correct. Maybe JPJ did the previous album.
@@rtwbikerider interesting. I thought it was weird that JPJ did Butthole Surfer's Independent Worm Saloon but I guess he was doing a lot of production then?
@@LivingLava I’ll bet that this was around the time when Page & Plant did that Unplugged project (and lost JPJ’s phone number 😉).
Look at their logo. It's spelled Līve so people would know how to pronounce it.
Ed Kowalczyk is one of my favorite singers. He puts so much passion into his voice, hearing him live is so moving.
You should be reacting to the unplugged versions. I also recommend The Dam At Otter Creek (studio)
My favorite band. My favorite song is All Over You.
The band is Live as in they play live. Which by the way they are best live in person....their recent tour had an awesome intro into All Over You.
Was a great live live performance in my home town Amsterdam at Paradiso
damn, loved this band back in the day 🙌
Beth, you should check out Ed Kowalcyk performing I Am Overcome with Sinead O'Connor singing backup. Ed is the real deal. Just saw Live in Niagara Falls. What an unbelievable show
I had this album on cassette back in the day lol
They must be big in the US (video recorded in the Netherlands).
Check out more of Ed's stuff, he has some timeless classics!
First, the crowd is KILLIN IT, actually nailing the notes of the chorus - big contrast to Devin Townsend making fun of his crowd's complete inability to maintain the tempo during the 'clap along' LOL
Second, gotta reiterate what everyone else has said, for as much as you love '90s grunge/alt, pretty shocking you haven't heard of Live! They had a decent number of hits, and their hits went HUGE(including this one).
Third, Ed K crushing it of course!
Live was my 2nd concert I went to after my all time fav band Toad The Sprocket.
Toad! Love Toad 🐸
Absolutely one of my top tier bands of the 90s. So much better than a lot of the more popular bands of the day.
I always loved this song but unfortunately this was probably the wrong video choice for Ed's voice
You definitely have heard them, maybe without knowing it, but a great band with numerous hits!
Saw em in new zealand last month and they were awesome
More of this band please.
I love Live!!!
One of my favorite bands,ed's voice is incredible 💖👍🎶🔥💖👍🎶🔥💖👍🎶🔥 so many awesome songs I could suggest, lightning crashes, all over you, selling the drama, shit town, freaks, rattlesnake, turn my head, lakinis juice, dolphins cry 🔥🎶👍💖🔥🎶👍💖🔥🎶👍💖🔥🎶👍💖
Back in the 90s, these guys were all over the radio. (at least in the US) You should definitely look into them more if you enjoyed this.
Live was on MTV Unplugged and it was one of the best performances ever, in my opinion. Equally great as Pearl Jam's Unplugged.
Lightening Crashes. Great song.
Beth, what's so different from nineties singing compared to this era? I know the music evolved, but it did not occur to me that singing styles did as well.
I'd be really interested to hear what you think of Live/Ed pre-2000, like maybe from the 1995 MTV unplugged show. His voice changed so much. He had vocal surgery around 2000 and became heavily influenced by American Idol and that sort of more "showy" style of singing. His voice is very "thinner" ? Or more nasely here, whereas in the 90s he had a much rougher and richer voice to my ears when he wasn't trying to push it beyond its limits.
90’s Rock!! 🤘
They was/is a big name in Europe. It was my favourit band in the 90's.
