The album Throwing Copper is one of the best albums to come out of the 90's, not a bad song on the entire thing and still sells well in record stores 30 odd years later. I Alone is a must do, tho personally I love The Beauty Of Grey. More LIVE please Van, you won't be disappointed bro.

The band dedicated this song to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time it was written. Her brother in-law Cory told Songfacts the story:
"The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed [lead singer Ed Kowalczyk] and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! 'Lightning Crashes' literally lives on."

Yeah... But the key word is DEDICATED.
She had nothing to do with the song initially.
I would also say the lyrics CAN be an analogy... Not ARE an analogy.
I think this description while mostly accurate is still written in a way that lends one to believe it was somehow written FOR her.
Ed makes absolutely no mention of her as any inspiration for the song.
The song is about the emergency room and he says he hasn't a clue where it came from

20 years ago this May my Grandmother passed away, on the day of her funeral (3 days later) my son was born. I had sat with my grandmother for many hours before she passed, she was waiting for my son. The circle of life comes to all of us. It may not be an intended idea behind this song but to me it took a great meaning at the time. My Mother went and bought CDs for my sister and I both. I listened to this and got chills.

As others have mentioned, their entire "Throwing Copper" album is worth listening to. These guys are real poets with their lyrics, and the band as a whole always sounds great. This always reminds me of the time that I went to the Tim Brown Football Camp in Los Angeles when I was 15--I had this on repeat at night on my CD player. Great times.

Interesting that you mention the energy. Live was sometimes criticized for the soft/loud verse/chorus song structure. But where they excelled was building through the song within that structure. It's like a long crescendo, and suddenly you're at the peak without realizing how you got there.

I'm about your age and my first ever actual concert was Live at the just renovated Jones Beach Amphitheater. Outdoors on and overlooking the ocean, sun setting, 15 or so years old and out with a bunch of friends just ourselves at our first concert. Eventually gets dark and Live come on and open with The Dam at Otter Creek. Starts slow and soft and lights minimal, no previous experience with concert acoustics or the crowd atmosphere. Music slowly builds up a bit, everyones quiet and listening...and then "BAM! BAM!" they get to the part with these two amazing quick and hard bass drum hits and the lights everewhere flare on and the crowd just erupts and then it all fades back to soft..."BAM! BAM!" and fade and soft verse..."BAM! BAM!"...fade but now getting closer together..."BAM! BAM"..."BAM! BAM!"...BAM! BAM!" and then into full-on rock show. First experience of bass going through my entire body, volume at full blast, the full visual coordination, the freedom of being out doing my own thing...it was and is still one of the best concert moments I have ever had. Hell, id even pick it as one of my top experiences overall to relive if i could.
Edit: Just for shits and giggles i looked it up and wouldn't you know it, there is a bootleg of the show on UA-cam lol.

The band is from York PA near Hershey PA (yes, that Hershey). York is a very Christian part of PA as is most of PA once your out of the armpits of Philly and Pittsburgh. Many of their songs revolve around Christian imagery and Ed Kowalczyk, the lead singer, appears, at least at this time in the mid-90s, to have become disillusioned with the faith struggling to square what sees with what many believe.
