Just a few hours ago I saw the end of the last video "i have to give the car back soon, I don't have time to retest" then this drops. Really impressive. From the spreadsheet Bjorn has over 115,000 kms just doing 1000 km challenge. What an asset to the EV community.
Perhaps you should consider doing another 1000 km challenge. The car have been improved a lot since summer 2023 via software updates. I've had mine for a year now and my Atto3 was just as foggy as you show in this video. This winter it almost didn't fog the windows. I believe they have changed the fan-direction in one of the updates. Now it should blow at the windscreen instead of the floor when you lock the doors. I think the good car is even better now :) (I'm Danish)
Well done Bjorn. Thorough as ever and being very fair to the Atto. Unfortunatley fairness when reviewing EVs is still not a common occurrence. You do the most comprehensive tests of any reviewer I've seen. I can think of few others who might re-test the Atto in order to discover a 35 minute improvement as well as a tweak to maintain higher charging speeds. At the end of the day it was a 4.7% improvement in the time. That's not massive, but it is notable. Who else would eek out that extra little bit because they took the time to work out the issue? And you're entertaining with it. You are an absolute legend.
BYD in New Zealand rolled out an OTA fogging fix that wasn't effective for all vehicles, and made some much much worse. They are currently looking to trial an update with 50 vehicles before fill rollout. Appreciate your work, no one does better or more comprehensive reviews than you Bjorn!
Thanks a lot got the extra mile Bjørn!!! I hope that BYD watches these serires of your videos on the Atto 3 and alonmg with your feedback, they can improve the car (mainly the fogging issue, that makes the car quite dangerous to drive...they are lucky that EURO NCAP does not account for fogging as a point for grading a car).
Kudos for doing a re-test. This is a lot of work on your part, Bjørn. This is also pretty interesting, because it shows what kind of performance the average driver will be able to get out of the car, versus a ninja like you. Now what BYD need to do, is update the software, so the average driver can get the same performance. The windows fogging up is just weird on a modern car like this. Honestly, it reminds me of my old VW Beetle, but at least there the windshield is so close and small that I can wipe it clean by hand while driving :)
I'm seriously jealous about how many charging options you've got there. Here in Australia we have some pretty big gaps and often only one or two 50kW tritium units for over 100km. It's improving but with a recent spike in EV sales it's not really keeping up. Anyway. Thanks again Bjorn. If I'm ever in a hurry to get from Sydney to Melbourne I'll know how to save half an hour 😊😊
You decided to re-do the test anyway :O Wow. Dedication. Well, now I’ll continue watching the videos. I’m sure it’s great work as usual. Thank you for your channel,
Thank you for re doing this test after your findings. It is your dedication at doing these tests that finds problems and you always seem to find the cause. BYD are an option on my list when I change my Kia E Niro next year.
You said you weren't going to retest...you are a machine!!! thanks for your dedication. BYD need to listen to you and sort out the issues here, as noone should need to be a ninja! Otherwise it looks like a frest car.
That heating-cooling system has a design flaw. It should work properly according to the needs of the driver and not the driver concerning/guessing about the heat pump/AC systems. However, that is quirky but not acceptable for today's standards, and sure there are other EVs with better heating/cooling systems. Another issue is when it rapid-gates in warmer weather regions such as the tropics.
@@PsychedMedia So, this heating-cooling system could be from that car alone. But again during the experiment, if turning on the AC the battery also cools down. Makes sense because, in Thailand and Malaysia, the AC is a must because is often hot on the lower lands.
Now this is dedication in serving consumers, "going the extra mile" to retest something just to learn and teach how to best use the product. 🤩👍 BYD should provide this video (and pay you Bjørn for it ;) to the Atto3 buyers as training on "how to drive long distance with Atto3". At least until they can fix the softwares in the car...
I drove this car before and I liked it but did not do the charge test. But you basically did what the test driver of BYD should have encountered and you showed them where it's lacking. Now BYD should update it to make the charging go faster.
10:55 hypercharger FTW. In 3 years EV I used almost exclusively hyperchargers. They are very popular in Germany. I am still waiting for my first failed session. Big advantage over Ionity/Tritium: Charging starts within a few seconds.
I own an Atto 3 and a software update back at the start of the year introduced the moisture/fogging when parked issue. I managed to get a response from BYD and they informed me that it was an enhancement that was implemented to remove condensation from the HEPA Filter, it will start blowing air once you park and switch off but only if you have run the AC, you can stop this from happening by locking and then unlocking and locking again. It tricks the car.
This. The fogging while parked thing is kind of deliberate, the car is trying to get the moisture out of the A/C system. Usually a good thing, but not ideal when you're going to come back in 5 minutes.
Hey Bjørn, there are a couple of reasons why BYD Blade batteries have a big delta between the warmest and coolest cell. In a Blade battery only the top of the battery pack is cooled. In, for example a Tesla Model 3, the cooling runs through whole the battery pack. Furthermore, if a cell fails in a Blade, the whole battery needs replacement. Model 3 on the other hand doesn't work this way. I quote a popular EV UA-camr: "Tesla for the win!"
This still seems inconsistent with what Atto3 drivers in Australia seem to be getting. I can’t help but think the aftermarket lights in the vents are having some effect.
We're also getting 88kW instead of 85. That said there's not a huge number of chargers that do more than 75kW here. Another factor is our speed limit is 100 or 110km/h in most of the country (some 130 in outback Northern Territory etc). So the temperatures are probably not climbing that much to start with. I had no rapidgating on my road trip. It could be that the car has been tuned slightly differently for Australian conditions? The software is definitely different, we get NEDC rather than WTLP for the range estimate for example.
@@nadnerb2k the difference is charge speed, although slight, does point to the software/configuration being different. I’m tempted to do a 1000km challenge myself but with 2 young kids and a full time job, yeah it’s not gonna happen. Maybe instead I can do the charge testing that Bjørn did in another video.
Regargind fogging, recirculation is the culprit. In my Kia EV6 (which you mentioned also) the car started recirculation, by default, automatically always when going into tunnel (the car assumes it's a good idea), and in 10 seconds the windows got fogged all over. If you turn that default off (there's a menu option for 'tunnel recirculation') then NO fogging occurred any more.
Hei Bjørn! I dont belive the stop in charging has something to do with vibrations on Ionity chargers. I have the same on my BYD Han and I have 8 months experience with this issue because I'm using the car often between Oslo and Berlin. It also happens on hyperchargers at Aral. If I'm driving from my flat in Berlin to the nearest Ionity charger on Berliner ring the car is cold and it does not stop charging. If I'm charging after 300 km. on autobahn it always stop.I belive it has something with temperature to do. And BYD must fix this and several other bugs asap.
After seeing this, I just have to wonder… the car is just crazy. Why would it want to heat (and soak) the cabin during a charge? Why does it run the fans when nobody is in there (and not when there's someone in there)? Why does it need to cool down the cabin to also cool down the battery? What were the engineers thinking? 😲 The list of things not to do or to do not to anger the thermal system seems extensive.
Unlike some heat pumps it looks like they've gone for a system that can only heat or cool. Some, like Kia/Hyundai, and Tesla, can do heat & cool at the same time
@@danielvanced5526 That's not what I've meant. I mean, „No AC/heating during a DC charge“ or „Slow DC charge if you run AC“ seems like a fair limitation. What I'm not getting is why the car wants to do anything at all with the cabin if its DC charging and nobody is in there. _That_ part makes no sense. Again, in case it wants to cool down the battery, it could turn off the AC for a while. Or not and wait for the driver to turn it off. But why does the driver need to turn the AC _on_ for the cabin to cool down the battery? That also makes no sense.
I really want you to test one of the 50 kWh, 100kW charging vans like the Toyota Proace City Electric, Citroen e-Berlingo, Opel Combo-e, Peugeot e-Rifter and e-Partner. Hopefully they'll do better than the 45kWh, 80kW charging vans like the Nissan Townstar.
These cars are about £33k (approx 38.5k euro) in the UK. They seem far too buggy and weird considering the high price.. The battery thermal management system seems too basic for an EV at this price point, for example. Hopefully they will get better as new models are released.
I have Atto 3 and does great so far (UK). I have no fogging, and the car is generously equipped. It is roomy enough and drives really well. It is very popular in Australia. What app do you use???
Same here, we have an Atto and drive it on long trips with no problem at all. I do recommend though setting the aircon before you drive off. I set the fans to 1 and the temp to 19C. If I need more heat in winter I use seat heating. I haven't encountered any fogging problem, but have heard of people who have. I have encountered this in ICE cars when the aircon drain has become blocked, sometimes by freezing up. However, I suspect in most cases it is people running the system in recirc mode.
Appteciate the extra test, Bjørn. But I'm still not entirely convinced about how to avoid rapidgating. Could you maybe do a 10,000km challenge tomorrow, just to make sure? 😊
Bjorn davvero complimenti per i tuoi video... sarebbe interessante sapere se anche per la BYD Dolphin esiste lo stesso problema oppure abbiano già risolto...
It's crazy that you can't just direct more cooling to the battery when it is needed, and less to the cabin. Maybe BYD needs an Octovalve? Also, if you were to drive a little slower to reduce drag (and energy consumption), would that affect your final average speed result much? Or is it better to drive a bit faster, and then charge a little longer? There has to be some optimal speed you can drive at, to get the best result.
From other EV challenges I think it depends on the recharge speed. I was just watching an out of spec video yesterday (las vegas to Colorado) and Kyle worked out that the charging speeds were so high on the cars they were driving that going slower was of no benefit, but they were charging at 150-250 kWs
@@yhfsywfit Yes that makes sense. If you are recharging at a significantly higher rate of miles per hour than you can legally and safely drive the car, even with the extra inefficiency brought on by extra drag and rolling resistance, you are winning by going faster then stopping to recharge for a bit longer.
I seems this is the worst car for a very long time .. unlike the MG4 ...and it's very expensive in the UK..you can get Model Y for same price !!! ...all the problems with this vehicle that you have pointed out over the series of videos about the Atto 3 were quite supprising... I remember the MG4 was cheap & pretty good at everything.. even fast charging at 134Kw for long time, thanks for yr vid.
I have a question Bjorn...are you able to provide Input/Feedback to ABRP? Im using it as a iPhone User but i have to admit especially the Apple Car Play functionalities are really bad. Crashes, really sluggish handling ect. Also the "live" Batterie Status for Volkswagen Group cars is not really working anymore since a few weeks. Maybe you can do a Q&A what the development plans of them are in a future video? Like you did with Ionity maybe?
Yeah ABRP seems to really struggle. In their feature request forum there are lots and lots of requests for new car models to be added that have been open sometimes for years…
too bad you don't show values of maximum cell voltage in your EV testing movies. the maximum difference between minimum and maximum cell voltage is partly responsible for behavior during battery charging and discharging. this in combination with the minimum and maximum cell temperature provides a good insight into possible reasons for charging failures
It seems that the voltage dropped because he stepped on the accelerator. This is normal behaviour for battery cells when they deliver a higher current.
@@flip0x01The decrease in cell voltage under high load is a natual phenomenon which applies to LFP cells as well, yes. You can watch various UA-cam channels where people who use LFP batteries with home inverters describe the same effect.
@@flip0x01 Every electrochemical cell (even a hydrogen fuel cell) behaves in this way because of their ohmic resistance. Higher current leads to a higher voltage drop over a resistor.
@@maartenhoogslag7714this is seriously laughable and sad. I shouldn't have to freeze in the car for it to not overheat... especially in normal conditions.
I remember being in the alps towering a caravan and my dad turned on the heating to full blast to stop the car overheating. It was the height of summer on a very hot day…
But there are better EVs out there. Just like in the fossil world. There are sh*tty ICE cars and there are better ICE cars. Why is that that when there is a badly designed EV in focus the whole EV market is laughable?! It's like __every__ EV has to be perfect all the time?! Weird
From what I can tell, and trying to oversimplify… Tesla looks to be the iPhone under the EV’s… they are not excelling in all aspects, but taking into account everything, they offer the best package for an ev BYD looks like a Chinese phone manufacturer… like Huawei or xiaomi… they try do do everything better but they do not succeed
Except that the Model Y is really the best priced option for a car of that size, and the iPhone is almost always the most expensive option. This Atto 3 costs almost the same as a Model Y, but really is about the size of Kona in terms of interior space. Cars that come into the same class as a Model Y (ID.4, Enyaq, Mustang Mach-e, Ioniq 5) are more expensive and still offer less space. They also need a lot of extra options to match the basic spec of the Model Y RWD and end up costing way more. Oh and I do think the Tesla's excel in many other ways too: efficiency, travel time, software updates, safety scores, trip planning, charging infrastructure, to name but a few.
Well Huawei was better right before the US put the ban. They were already No.1 in smartphone sales that year. Also even today Huawei's own OS is still way more feature rich than either Android or IOS
@@bilgyno1 Except there's no reason to match a Model Y. That's the issue with Tesla, the base model is too expensive in order to cut cost. Unfortunately, that can also be said about all these EVs. All of them are too well equipped for no reason. We really need EVs at $20K or less. $10k or less for urban commuters.
You do realise that BYD are the best battery manufacturers in the world and have been doing it for a long time? They will catch up soon enough in the surrounding frameworks of a car.
I think it fogs because you're not warming the air that goes inside enough... Colder air has less moisture carrying capacity than warmer. So if you warm it up, it can defog even if it's 100% humidity outside. Setting AC to low temp goes against this and even a bit of moisture from your breath accumulates... Even worse if it would actually cool, then the relative humidity of that air increases, and recirculation is absolute killer because moisture can only increase from your breath. Setting (non-recirculated) airflow only on the windshield at higher fan speed could help a bit even with low temp set. Still, fogging when heating and you are out of the car is strange, even if it recirculated.
When the vehicle is locked, the climate system is programmed to run a purge. An effect of this is the fogging seen here. It even got nicknamed fog-gate on the BYD owners forum here. Our car did this from new but after an update we no longer have that problem. Apparently a scheduled OTA update will stop the vehicle turning on climate Auto mode when started too, as this is a huge PITA.
The Li Ion batteries should not be charged to 100%, nor should it be discharged to 0%. Effective for long battery life is (DISCH to)10-15% - (CHG to) ~90%.
Yes BYD are developing Sodium-ion but there seems to be conflicting info on this: “Sodium-ion development in 2023 BYD Seagull was rumored to be the first mass-produced EV with a sodium-ion battery. However, when it was launched in April, it came with a standard LFP Blade battery from BYD.”
Last video, I commented on what can cause the windows to steam up, but I forgot to mention the ways I have found to best clear them. You can buy bags of a zeolitic compound (posh kitty litter), that can absorb lots of moisture out of the air - useful if the carpet underlay is wet. Best of all, these bags can be baked in an oven and then reused. For max clearing of fogging without the above - A/C clear the windscreen, then have the heating on maximum temp and speed for the footwells, and crack open the REAR windows around 10-15 mm. Both can take days if the underlay is really wet. I once accidentally left the moonroof open on a car, and we had torrential rain overnight; the water was sloping over the sills when I opened the door, next morning.
TLDR: avoid... yes pay 10k extra for a model 3 and dont deal with this shit... im all for geeking out on the settings and efficiency but this is going into punishment territory
Too many screens in these ev's your not supposed to use a mobile because of distraction yet all these ev's have screens all over the place it's not good for safety folk should be looking at the road ahead behind and at the sides
I am actually more amazed at the range of 525km and 610km. Are those after each pit stop without any charging in between? If yes, how did you get those range?
It is overpriced atm for sure. Still, more competition is always better. Model Y would have been a lot more expensive without the Chinese car makers on their heels.

Why were the efficiencies for all the cars so horrible? Only the Model 3 and Ioniq cracked 200wh/km? Too cold or too fast?
In the old days, all this was done by many test drivers employed by the car company.
I hear all the time Chinese EVs will destroy the European car industry😮, after seeing this I am not convinced.
I looked under the bonnet of one recently and it looks like there's an Octovalve. Don't know if it's a design flaw, or a software issue?
@@boogle55 Bjorn actually went into that later in the video, and its a seven-valve setup, not 8 valves.

Atto 3 does not have a PTC heater, it uses a heat pump.
You are awesome.
Imagine paying so much for this car
Its on great leasing deals in sweden
The BYD Atto 3 is a good car but it still needs a lot of software updates like Tesla at the beginning.
How would the recommendation transfer to a hot environment?
Does a Mercedes EV rapid-gate if you if you push it and run AC while DC-charging?
I seems this is the worst car for a very long time .. unlike the MG4 ...and it's very expensive in the UK..you can get Model Y for same price !!! ...all the problems with this vehicle that you have pointed out over the series of videos about the Atto 3 were quite supprising... I remember the MG4 was cheap & pretty good at everything.. even fast charging at 134Kw for long time, thanks for yr vid.
If you are correct about your observations Bjorne, then you need to be a recharge ninja getting this one right.
In their feature request forum there are lots and lots of requests for new car models to be added that have been open sometimes for years…
the issue is not with the software. the issue is the hvac is low on gas. check the pressure of hvac system
yes, had the same issue. this fixed mine
22:55, could you please explain when you say that consumption is kWhr 3649 and then calculating 255Whr/km
too bad you don't show values of maximum cell voltage in your EV testing movies. the maximum difference between minimum and maximum cell voltage is partly responsible for behavior during battery charging and discharging. this in combination with the minimum and maximum cell temperature provides a good insight into possible reasons for charging failures
will you test the dolphin too??
Yes
Thank you Bjørn 😊
@@bjornnyland do you aldready know, when you will test the dolphin? ;o)
Is that car paint a PEARL white color?
Next time , when you put your camera in front of some screens , can you move the camera slower and we could see what you see
Still slower than Kona...Atto 3 would be ok if it cost 25k Euro
It should be lower than that. Either BYD is not seriously trying to sell in Europe or something to do with taxes.
so are BYD cars good or not?
Heptavalve 😄
Ant headlight test coming up in the fall?😊
at 2:32, why did the lowest cell voltage sag to 2.99v? is that normal? thanks
It seems that the voltage dropped because he stepped on the accelerator. This is normal behaviour for battery cells when they deliver a higher current.
@@michaelrichter2528 is that true for all chemistries? I'm assuming this car is using LFP blade batteries?
@@flip0x01The decrease in cell voltage under high load is a natual phenomenon which applies to LFP cells as well, yes. You can watch various UA-cam channels where people who use LFP batteries with home inverters describe the same effect.
@@flip0x01 Every electrochemical cell (even a hydrogen fuel cell) behaves in this way because of their ohmic resistance. Higher current leads to a higher voltage drop over a resistor.
@@michaelrichter2528Got it. Thanks for the info
This car in China costs like 20k euro, with full options....
Ice owners would laugh so much at this
ICE owners expected to stop laughing within a few years. ICE manufacturers are fighting their tears already.
Weird
so what? its a bug, Will be fixed.
From what I can tell, and trying to oversimplify… Tesla looks to be the iPhone under the EV’s… they are not excelling in all aspects, but taking into account everything, they offer the best package for an ev
BYD looks like a Chinese phone manufacturer… like Huawei or xiaomi… they try do do everything better but they do not succeed
A Heptagon, seven side shape it’s called a heptagon
The moist is comming from condenced water on the AC evaporator when the cooling is stopped and the ventilation fans still running.
Still no excuse. Other cars behave way better.
@@gerbre1Agree!!
That moisture should be extracted from the condenser and expelled under the car, like any other air con system.
The battery in a BYD is not Li Ion, it is a blade battery which has a LiFePO4 chemistry.
@@robertmuster1350
They use all types of batteries, incl. the ones you mentioned above and some new technologies like lithium iron phosphate (LFP)
Tony, I will repeat, BYD use Lithium Iron Phosphate, also known as LIFePO4, LFP or Blade batteries.
@robertmuster1350

⚡ Sodium-ion battery debuts with BYD Seagull EV in China in March, 2024. This is LFP alternative.
Yes BYD are developing Sodium-ion but there seems to be conflicting info on this:
“Sodium-ion development in 2023
BYD Seagull was rumored to be the first mass-produced EV with a sodium-ion battery. However, when it was launched in April, it came with a standard LFP Blade battery from BYD.”
24:50 sadly enough that is closer to 10€ then to 12€ these days
I suggest to change the name in BYN (build your nightmare) 😮
This is little bit funny. Unfoggy inside or cooling battery, same thing is not working. 😂
Shites! Wish these videos came out 2 weeks earlier. Everyone spend 10k more, buy a Model 3 and be done with it!😢

TLDR: avoid... yes pay 10k extra for a model 3 and dont deal with this shit... im all for geeking out on the settings and efficiency but this is going into punishment territory
Shrug, you could pay more to get a Rolls Royce too. Different cars for different people.
Too many screens in these ev's your not supposed to use a mobile because of distraction yet all these ev's have screens all over the place it's not good for safety folk should be looking at the road ahead behind and at the sides
Honestly this BYD is really a bad experience
I am actually more amazed at the range of 525km and 610km. Are those after each pit stop without any charging in between? If yes, how did you get those range?

I don't think that when you use a fossil car you'd turn off heating for better fuel consumption
Nope, they are so inefficient to begin with.
For the price the car is just shitty. Go buy a Model Y SR and be happy.
Nah
It is overpriced atm for sure. Still, more competition is always better. Model Y would have been a lot more expensive without the Chinese car makers on their heels.
