Minus the big wreck, this race was incredible with the sling shot passing. You could lose 3 or 4 positions on the backstretch, get back in line and fly back to the front without much difficulty by the time you got back to the start/finish line
@AARON FEVRIN Tbf that's what the current package is like. The current superspeedway cars have more hp than they've ever had and have huge spoilers to give those massive runs.

I'm from New Zealand. I use to watch Nascar back in the late nineties when I was a kid. Loved Mark Martin and the Winston cup but I always thought the trucks were cool as fuck. Pickups going that fast just seemed so badass
Still remember seeing this for the first time the day it happened. I was a sophomore in high school and was only a couple months from getting my license so I was still riding the bus home. Came home and as soon as I walked in, my dad asked me if I saw what happened during the truck race. I told him I saw a few minutes of it during lunch since they had it on the school cafeteria's TV and asked him what happened. He had taped the race and showed me the crash without telling me anything about it. My first question was "who died?" He said nobody did but the person in the wreck was Geoff Bodine (sorry, refuse to use this Geoffrey nonsense). It's such a vivid image in my head and it's the only time in 30 plus years of watching NASCAR that I actually asked if anyone was killed after seeing a crash for the first time.
When you hear Ray & crew talking about aero packages vs taking plates off the cars was awesome considering NASCAR did just that, Took the plates off but altered the aero package in such a way that there were no need for the plates.
God it mustve been terrifying to see this live cause with as much as that truck was destroyed im sure people out there werent even sure that he wasnt ejected from the truck all together which wouldve 100% killed him
1:05:23 the wild ride. Just like 2012 NASCAR Xfinity Series wild ride on the catchfence, 2013 Austin Dillon crash post checker flag of Coke Zero Sugar 400 and Ryan Newman near-fatal crash in 2022. In Talladega have wild ride, Bobby Allison in May 1987, Neil Bonnett 1993 & Carl Edwards 2009.
Best super speedway package for Daytona, best series period. NASCAR messed up the trucks looks and racing package with the current configuration, notice the more slanted front end the the beds moved sideways…they should bring a Next Gen truck.
1:31:42 This is real time. 2 f dangerous , ppl actually dont care ,
Nowadays they keep use big crash naratives to supports another corrupt states projects
This race had the most violent wreck in truck series history
And possibly one of the worst ones in NASCAR history
Man what a grand awesome race xD
@@nicktabor732 Definitely one of the worst in the sport's history.
1:05:15 is the moment of impact!
You can tell no one knew what to say when the big wreck happened. A miracle that Geoff survived
The slingshot pass, no restrictor plates, 750 HP and boxy trucks at Daytona on ESPN. Doesn't get any better than that.
would love to see this kind of racing back in the truck series

Man, I’m a New Zealander as well
Yeah back when they looked like actual pickup trucks.
1:26:23 the silver lining about that crash
Like many have said, it's a testament to how much safety they've put when it comes to building those race trucks.
What a race. Taped it while at work in 2000 and just now realized I never saw the end due to the long red flag. Thanks for posting this!
lol Listening to all the old Nascar commercials was well worth it.

That tri-oval has since become extremely dangerous. The Xfinity race of 13, the 2015 coke zero 400 and this crash before.
Seeing the fans standing up and reacting to the crash as it was happening was bone chilling.

Great upload for a historic race.
I have to say that I’m kinda surprised that Ray isn’t working for NASCAR in their engineering/research department anyway.

Again, I appreciate ESPN being careful not to show replays until after receiving confirmation of the spectators' condition.
