That's because it absolutely was better back then, no denying it. We still had nearly all the historic tracks, the largest group of famous veteran racers at or near the peak of their careers, a schedule & points system THAT MADE TOTAL SENSE............and to top em all, the most exciting races. You can bet the farm racing was MUCH better back in these times.
A lot of things were better in the 90s, even the sponsorships. Back then, cigarette and dip companies could sponsor cars. Nowadays, they can't and even alcohol sponsorships may become illegal. As if we need the government or NASCAR to tell us what's good and bad. Oh not to mention it felt a lot more "down home" if you will, back in the old days. As in, many of the drivers were just average guys who started out with little to nothing (such as Dale). Nowadays, many drivers are well off before they ever step foot in a car. It's also far too clean and corporate, not to mention they push social trash like "I can't breathe". I guess the best way to put it is NASCAR isn't NASCAR anymore, it's F1. A bunch of wealthy guys going around in circles.

@@randomlyentertaining8287 Also Ross Chastain, he used to be a watermelon farmer. There are still people who worked their way up on their own! However, you can’t blame a lot of these kids of the greats (like Chase Elliott) benefitting from their parents. I didn’t know the 90s but I did know the 2000s to agree that it was better. This doesn’t mean is all that bad though. The racing actually has on average way closer finishes than the 90s even before the crappy stage races went into effect in 2017.
As a little boy growing up, Dale was my fathers favorite driver. I remember going to races as a kid and just memorized by the 3 car. I always looked up to dale as almost like a god, but dad told me, that he was just like us. Hard working, and built himself what he had. I remember this race so well, 7 years old, being at home, dad being a nervous wreck. When he actrually won the race I'll never forget celebrating with my father. Just so elated and happy. We both cried. We also cried when we loss Dale. I'm not longer a huge race fan anymore, nether is dad. However we'll never forget this race, and the race in 2001. Thanks Dale for all the memories.

I was 14 years old and watched this race with my Dad. I Remember this day vividly. Jumping up and down wildly on the couch when Earnhardt won!

My reaction was "he did it, he finally DID it" and I just had tears coming down my face. That victory was special for Dale.

First time seeing this in its entirety since watching it live. I started watching Nascar in 1992 at 7 years old. So of course the golden era for me was absolutely the 90s. I was a huge Mark Martin fan with that Valvoline car. I think the allure of Nascar to me back then was that these men put it all on the line each week. 800hwp machines and concrete walls always had you on the edge of your seat. The personalities were huge, the rivalries were fierce, and the merchandise was awesome to wear lol. The NFL was better in the 90s too! Great time to be alive
Every team member coming out was such a display of class and Dale was such a classy guy. NASCAR was not the same after his death.

Been a fan of Nascar since the 70's when i was a fan of Richard Petty after he retired i needed a driver to route for and found Dale Sr. I was so proud of him and after his death never watched a race after that. When dale died so did nascar for me
I was always a Gordon fan, but Dale got a smile and a nod from me at the end of this one. One for the ages.

This was a special day. I was all of 8. My daddy was always a diehard dale fan til the day he passed away himself. This race always takes me back to that day with my dad. He was so happy for dale. Honeslty you would have thought he was the one who just won the Daytona 500. Lol

Then there was the Busch race on Saturday
Then nascar on Sunday
It was better before it landed on fox and nbc Espn really knew how to cover it

Every year on February 15th I come back to UA-cam and rewatch this exact race. One of the best Moments in NASCAR history
The old man drove his ass off that day! What a drive he had, greatest to ever do it folks hands down!
I was in the Daytona grandstands with a buddy in 1998 and was one of the lucky ones to be able to see his famous victory. We even rented racing radios so we could here him talking to his crew. Glad we had a designated driver that day as I don't even remember leaving the parking lot!!!

I've watched it back in 98 and teared up and I just watched it again and couldn't help but tear up once again!!! Dale Earnhardt was my hero from way back in 77 and will be my hero till the day I'm gone!!! Nascar was never the same for me the day we lost Dale and I've missed him ever since, but he'll always be my hero!!!

I still remember even then being worried even after he took the white and caution flags that somehow something would happen and his car would somehow fail him once again on the final lap. Thankfully, it didn't.

I watched this live I followed nascar for a few years but the chase for the cup killed my interest no more racing to yellow Danica Patrick being shoved down our throats they once changed the rules of the race in mid race couldn’t deal with it gave up a little after Earnhardt died

I was born in 2000. Never had any memories of Earnhardt, never had the ability to experience the various feuds and struggles he had, but if I know one thing, it's that he was the best damn racer to ever step foot in a car. God Bless NASCAR for uploading these videos. For most people watching this, it's a trip down memory lane. For me, however, it's a educational video on why Dale Earnhardt was the greatest of all time.

I remember sitting my classmates watching this race in his dads garage. Great race...back when Nascar was Nascar...and #3 won the race and did the signature donuts..
I have only watched short takes of the crews congratulating Earnhardt on pit lane. Watching the full video; all crew members of all teams shaking his hand...wow, much much respect to that moment in history!

A fitting victory
I was at a ski lodge bar up in Maine. And when Dale took the checkered flag the whole place erupted like the Patriots won the super bowl. I ll always remember that moment.
Yeah, that was a historic moment. Dale Sr tried so hard for many years to finally get this accomplishment. It took him TWENTY years!
My dad watched this race in 1998 then 20 years later my dad and me watched the 3 return to victory lane at the Daytona 500 and I love NASCAR and I love now rewatching old NASCAR races

No. That claim goes to the 1992 championship race at Atlanta. Richard Pettys last race, Jeff Gordons first race, more big names on track then you can count, and 6 drivers mathematically able to take the championship. People went to the race knowing the were going to witness something special.

Hated what happened to Jeff Gordon at the end of that race, but he would wind up having the best season any driver has ever had in the modern era! But that day was all about Dale Earnhardt! He deserved it! 🏁
That whole sports year was one of the greatest ever. Elway wins the Super Bowl, Dale wins the 500. Jordan's second 3-peat. Red Wings go back-to-back in the NHL. Yankees staggering 125 wins & Series title. Gordon's 3rd Winston Cup. Solid dynasties all around.

I like a lot of others had no words that day. I just cried. I couldn’t control it. So relieved to see him finally win it and I think his fans especially felt what he felt that day. I miss him terribly. The sport misses him as we all can see today. Never be another like him.

I'm so glad to see this here on UA-cam! For some reason I missed watching this race live on TV back in the day. I was so disappointed that I had missed it when I heard Dale finally won. I thought I would never get to see it.
Watching this 25 Years Later I still remember exactly where i was when he won. I ran into my mom in the hallway running to tell her the good news. She had the same idea and we slammed into each other. I Celebrated the Intimidators win with a bloody nose and its one of my fondest memories.
I was 5 years old watching this race on a TV supporting fellow Vermonter Kevin Lepage, and my favorite driver Bill Elliott. So glad the Intimidator got that win..RIP!
Damn, I started watching Jr's podcast about a month ago, never was a NASCAR fan until I started with his show. I've damn near watched every episode in that month, and can't believe damn near everybody in this race from the pit guys to the racers, have been on his show. It's freaking cool to go back and see this old footage of his dad winning, you almost feel like you know the guy, I was damn near in tears watching it. They were on his ass those last 5 laps, it looked like a pride of lions chasing dinner lol. Seeing Mayfield after watching the podcast he was on is pretty tough, I had no clue he was basically on top of the world and fell so hard.
Anyway Dale Jr has a way of explaining things to people like me( who don't know shit about NASCAR) and making everything understandable and intriguing. I'll all in on NASCAR from here on out
3 years later, we lost him. Arguably the best driver of a entire racing generation who made you laugh, yell, scream, and ultimately cry. If you had any chance to spend just 1 day with him during your life, you could learn more than any 1 year before that. He made drivers cringe, change tactics, think, sweat, swear, run, push harder, cower, and ultimately cry. Just as any other strong hero type, he did not know how he affected his fans and up and coming drivers who had aspirations to be like him; drive like him. After Dale passed away, thousands of NASCAR fans just stopped. Stopped watching, stop caring about the sport, stopped collecting memorabilia...just stopped.
In the past few years after losing the best hard rock guitarist of my generation , I also stopped listening to music.
That's how you know you're a legend. You affect something so much that without you it is never the same for some people.

I still remember watching the race that day. I understood Earnhardt's frustration and many years of trying: I waited five long years for him to finally outrun his incredible bad luck and cross the finish line. One thing I never forgot: one of his mechanics, a big guy with a beard just stood, staring at the finish line. When Earnhardt took the checkered flag, he burst into tears. I think he worked with Earnhardt for a long time and experienced the same heartbreak and frustrations over the years. I still miss Dale Earnhardt. Stock car racing was never the same when he died. Rest in peace, Intimidator...

If that victory lane celebration doesn’t make you cry tears of joy then I don’t know what will. If it was destiny for him to pass away in 2001, I am so happy that he was able to experience this before going.
Dale was my favorite growing up, and still is today. The fact that he was 46 years old when he won that race is even better. That won't be matched again
This was one of the greatest moments in nascar history I was on edge of my the last 10 laps of this race and when he finally won it I literally hit the roof and was so happy for him and that team to finally win it after 20 years Nascars greatest Driver ever finally won the Daytona 500 after 20 years of trying

This IS NASCAR racing! The REAL NASCAR racing! These guy didn't need "competition cautions" or "segments" or any other gimmick to put on a show! It was a white knuckle ride from start to finish back in the day. These guys were competitors and rivals but at the end of the race, these guys were a family and they acted like it! Not now! The modern NASCAR has forgotten all about brotherhood and family. These kids who race now can only dream of what drivers like Jeff Gordan, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Allan Kulwicki managed to do in their careers. Watching NASCAR now is kind of like watching Sesame Street. I keep waiting for Grover to announce a road course!
My grandpa was crying tears when joy when Dale finally won The Daytona 500. It's the only time i saw grandpa cry.

I was still single in 1998. I watched the race and was jumping and screaming all around my apartment. As a racing/Earnhardt fan, this was the greatest day ever.
