i've been wanting to learn how to snowboard because i live in canada and just so i dont get left out on friend activities. one day i searched up, "how to snowboard" and you were the first one to pop up, your videos teach me more every time i watch them. i'm gonna buy my own snowboard soon after writing this comment.

those rental boards are pretty awesome. When i tried to rent at the very beginning of my snowboard journey they always only had regular camber boards, no "entry level" or levels at all. Also the boots were super old and even tho they were technically my size, there was no one to help me check if they actually fit by telling me what they were supposed to feel like, and i ended up having zero heel hold and having to push down on my toes until they were basically numb on my toe turns, instead of being able to lean into my boots.. So own boots was the first thing i got and it was a literal game changer. I guess the boards would've been alright after the very beginning, but i then decided i wanted a board hat would allow me to progress a little quicker and just be able to know exactly what i'm working with. I felt like rentals were always a bit of a... surprise. You never knew what you would end up with exactly.
Thankfully i ended up getting my first board and bindings on sale, so i didn't have to invest alot of money and was able to get a camber board with stiffer flex once i felt more comfortable. I haven't had the heart to sell that first board yet. I keep hoping that maybe one day i'll get to teach someone my size how to snowboard and then i can just lend them that board and know they'll have good fun with it...

I rented a snowboard about 2 times before I bought my own. I’d recommend it as you aren’t going to know if you like it or even what you want or what is good and what isn’t if you’ve never rode before. It’s a huge investment but worth it if you aren’t growing out of it in a season and riding it enough.

i honestly dont mind renting my ski's but i did make a point out buying my own shoes as its quite important to get those tailored to your feet well. it doesnt matter as much if the board/skis you rent are a bit less quality as long as you get the transference from your body though the boots onto the plank well at least technique will make up for the fact you are riding a old board or on old ski's. i can imagine at higher level you would want both for yourself. as with skis/board you carve though the snow. and just like a chef you want your own knife to cut and carve :)

Without going into bashing about rental boards: one can only wonder how customers can be so successful on such a non productive ride no matter what company put them out. Plus now that the stance width is no longer adjustable on the new ones being shipped to the shops with predetermined inserts. This will cause many problems for people in the area of a workable stance width!

Renting is good if you are unsure you are into the sport - so, 2-3 times. After that, buy used gear until you are good enough and go often enough to justify buying new. Once you know how the gear will impact your experience, that's when you can buy new or specialized stuff. Otherwise, it all gets you down the hill about the same. I was initially excited about seasonal rental, and for some, that still makes sense. However, buying used is about the same cost (perhaps slightly more) as renting for the season.

Have to say Christie in Lakewood really took care of me Thursday. I was sick of the boots I've had for two seasons that have speed laces getting loose after two runs and causing hella hell lift. Walk in and the lady there (look for Allison) put me in the foot sizer and immediately said my foot shape is a K2. First boot she put me in (the Maysis) we're about the best my foot has felt in a new boot. Not saying it was perfect, I think my mid foot is really tall so any boot feels like it's squishing that hard until the liner is molded (still might go back and get it heat molded). Ended up putting my old liner in there today for riding at abay and it was nuts how responsive my board was with boots that completely stop hell lift and they were so comfy. Long story short though even though this is only my second time shopping for a new boot this is night and day compared to last time when I went to three different stores and they just kept throwing random boots at me hoping one would fit my feet.

It really all depends on what the boards you rental shop uses are, the rental shop at the hill i work at uses elan snowboards that are much stiffer than this one again with light camber. That one looked a little too flex for a beginner even, if its to flexible you don’t get the same foot control forgiveness if you shift your weight the wrong way. If its to flexible one foot can lift making a shorter contact patch making it easier to spin out of control if you don’t have great balance yet.

Granted this video is biased considering he’s ripping his sponsors board… rentals are usually not terrible, at least at the places I’ve been. Living in the southeast I only get to go about once a year and have never owned a board. Rentals have gotten me all the way from the bunny slopes to the terrain park and even held up in the deeps and chutes of the bowls I’ve had the opportunity to shred. I recommend getting a performance package (if there’s one available) if you ride anything other than groomers. So no rentals will not stunt your progression as a snowboarder

You'll probably fall a lot, most people do, and it's nice to not have to worry as much about your wrists.

@@JohnathanBuckhouse Your thumbnail says professionally tested. To me, that insinuates that you are claiming to have “professionally” tested it. Professional to me means that your getting paid to ride. That may be the case, however, you are another dude on UA-cam putting out poor content. If your gonna hit the steep, hit it. And stop pushing your second rate goggles (yes I am a professional). I professionally tested your goggles and they’re trash. I’ll put my 10 years of experience in ophthalmology into that claim.

Yeah he's "technically" a professional since he makes money from snowboarding, but yeah- he's certainly not a pro in any "pre-UA-cam era" sense of the word. Definitely never could've earned a dime before UA-cam was a thing.
