EMOTIONAL FAREWELL as we finally LEAVE NEW ZEALAND 😢 (Episode 276)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 вер 2024
- After an entire summer in New Zealand, and after successfully circumnavigating the country, we finally clear out of NZ and head offshore for a 1000 mile journey towards Fiji. Most of the crew have never done a passage like this, so emotions run high as we head off into the deep blue.
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Colin shared some wise words in this week's episode. My own father didn’t say a kind or encouraging word to me until I was in my mid-30s, but I was fortunate to reconcile with him before he passed, despite a difficult upbringing. As Colin said, it’s never too late.
we all grow different ways but we are all the same , brother Lion
For me at 68 , it's to late
Edit: Most of family are dead
@@WHEREVER-I-ROAM 70 here old sucks but we got this far.
@@maverickmyrtlebeach yes we have 👍
@@WHEREVER-I-ROAM 🤣
My Dad passed away 5 years ago. He was never one for overt displays of affection but his way of showing his love was through doing things for the family with his hands (for me it was mainly fixing my very unreliable old British sports car that I bought as a 17year old). Seeing your Dad making you shelves for the boat hit me in the feels. Treasure every moment.
You miss them when their gone. Put your stubborn away, and do your best to say what needs to be said now, not tomorrow. 😢
Thanks for sharing.
Ohhhh seasickness...UGH!!! Been sailing since 10 years old (70 now) and feel sick almost every time. Usually doesn't last long but it can be brutal. Ginger helps! Enjoy so much your channel and especially love your longer vids!! Thanks for bringing us all along!❤❤❤
So very true what Colin said. I am 45 now and have been away “touring” the world for 24 years. Having really hard time trying to get to know them again. Living a “Nomadic” life as beautiful as it is, comes with a big price.
For me - probably one of your best episodes yet. Allot of wisdom on that boat and hit some soft points… Tail winds and calm seas…
Thank you Colin and your wonderful crew for allowing us to be part of your NZ adventures. Must be time to go and collect your best mates from Tonga. Be safe, take care and God bless you all 🙏🙏👍⛵️
I like Katie I hope she stays I remember when she joined in and it’s just so cool to have seen it all
The meat pie bit had me laughing my back side off 😂 And what a beautiful tribute to family, Colin….just in time for Father’s Day too 🥹❤️ Not a dull moment in this one. What a lovely crew 😍
Your circumnavigation of New Zealand has been stunning, and Colin's personal reflections in this episode kept things nicely grounded, but there's nothing quite like a new passage plan and new crew to rekindle the excitement. Really looking forward to the next stage of your global adventure. Safe travels Parlay !
Tempus fugit, Colin, you will pass the big "4", the big "5", and so on, you will become wiser and experience more physical discomforts, but you never will realise how fast time flies when you have buried your last parent. Your parents did a fine job on you Colin, you have and are a wonderful personality ! God's speed, favourable winds and following seas to you 👍😎
Colin, it's not unusual for fathers and sons to go through what you did. When you grow up and start to understand more about life things change in your views. I am so glad you were able to work with him on your boat and sharing life experiences together will last with you for ever.
You have have an amazing team with you. Treasure theses times together as you make your way around the world. You should be very proud of each and everyone.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Love Sunday morning coffee with Parley Revival ❤
Colin, it is time to go. Now please take us with you on this journey. For some of us this is our only means of travel. I love your shows and continue looking forwards to the next show. Safe travels to you and your crew.
Man, if it wasn’t for Jamie and his infectious laughter, this channel wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable.
Another great one Brit! and Colin! Heading offshore for a long passage is an experience not to be missed! As always watching an episode end leaves me wanting more. Can’t wait for next week! Thanks guys!
@6:55 😢 you have that right Colin ! At 8:29 pm Aug 31st 2024 (last night to me) my mother passed away man, 💔😭 my heart is broken I'm 41 and she was 61 we shouldn't be dealing with this at our age man... This part of the video had me crying so hard just thinking about the time we lost together. Call your mom call your family and friends people because you never know when that time will come.
I love you mom rest easy!
Sending you hugs and love. Rest in love and peace to your loved mother❤
Never to late to reconnect, completely agree. Great video.
Lol... The last shot of Colin chucking his cookies was a bit of a surprise... lol.. Nice one!

Colin, Loved this episode. Your comments regarding time with your dad hit the nail on the head. I lost my dad when I turned 48 before I started building our Catamaran, and I know he would have taken so much pride in helping me build our boat. I was blessed to be able to achieve some massive projects with him and I was was so happy to see you and Grant working together and having a good laugh, thats the stuff I miss. Thanks for the heartwarming video. Rossco
Safe passage guys!!! Love your content Colin
Glad you have had this time with your Dad, I lost mine a few years after having had the same type of reconciliation and having worked together on a project to rehab his kitchen and home. These are my fondest memories now, 29 years later 👍
I’ve flowed you from the beginning, you ansd Jamie are family. Thank you for shRing your life with us.
You heard it here first. An Aussie that admits a kiwi pie is the best hahaha
He can’t help but have to admit it. I miss them.
Such genuine connections and a bunch of good humans!
Don't be sad, just think you get to go get your 2 awesome dogs!!
Keep pressing forward!
Hands down, one of the best sailing YT channels out there! You guys rock!!!
Thanks for the memories team 😊
Beautiful, thank you Colin,, each episode is good for the soul, can’t wait till next week. Cheers🍻
What a blast. Great heartfelt message to those of us who dont see family enough
You never forget your first offshore passage its just the best achievement if you like sailing and the ocean. Scopoderm is an absolute must.
Interesting last time I saw my Dad he was sailing to FIJI. It was just days before my 40th. I loved days on his Yacht, taking the wheel, and seeing Dolphins⛵
The good atmosphere on the yacht is obvious - I think we need a "Parlay Revival Below Deck" episode soon 🙂
Man Colin you even make getting sea sick look professional... Fair winds and calm seas sir. Be safe guys and gals
Aww gee Colin you hit the nail on the head with your mention of reaching out to those we love. The lesson is to appreciate each day no matter where and what you are doing. Love the channel, keep it up. We all have our unique journeys.
Watched the below decks where you lost marty this week.. it’s happened to us all loosing a pet dog heart breaking really heartbreaking.
I started binge watching a few months ago & things have happened during this time watching your content has made me reflect on my own life thank you for being an inspiring human being really I’m nearly 60yo & I have learned humanity and tolerance patience etc from watching your channel, be proud of yourself colin & those around you.⚓️👍👍🙏🇬🇧
I just love watching your channel. I look forward every week to your new videos. Good luck to all of you on this awesome journey. May you all get to your destination safely and motion sickness free.
Father’s Day here in Australia as this video dropped ❤Wow you touched on some feelings 1st Fathers Day without my daughters grandad (Ockie) days like this make it super emotional. As for my real dad well after my baby brother (37) passed last year I got to see him for the nasty toxic man I had always seen but being family you allow them to be around. I have to choose my path without the toxic it’s hard very hard and sometimes no matter how many times you try you gotta choose yourself. I’m so glad you got these moments with your Dad and he’s carpentry skills are now forever on your boat 🛥️ very heartfelt and brought all the feels 🫶🏼😢your New Zealand trip and the camera work and editing should win awards outstanding 🙌 praying 🙏 for safe passage and travels it’s awesome to see patrons involved and creating once in a lifetime experiences ❤❤❤ grateful for the opportunity to watch and enjoy the journey with you all.
I’m kind of sad your New Zealand circumnavigation is over, what a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing this with us. Hope you have a safe sailing to Fiji, and it’s time to get your buddies back on your boat.
I like the way you foster a healthy team culture on the boat. A bunch of good humans all round.
Nice sincere words reflecting on parents and the fact we all have challenges, flaws, times that are not sunshine and roses with our parents/kids. Life is a complex tapestry, ups and downs all part of the fascinating beautiful journey. The editing keeps getting better and better. Full pro grade
it's good that the boat is on the water and you are traveling. Have fun with new locations.
When Sea sick arrives get on the bridge and put your face in the wind and keep it there. Eat dry toast no spread.. cup of 7up keep your taste buds wet with. not allot of drink just keep it wet with 7up and that dry toast for any hunger.. Do not go below and always puke over the rail or your cleaning it up. No puking in the bathroom at all,
and make sure you throw down wind.
oh my god the pie's, as someone that moved to the usa 20 ish years ago I almost cried watching that.
I have been watching your videos throughout the summer. During Summer Classes, let me tell you, your positivity is getting me through some tough times. I have been switching back and forth between your videos and the university videos I have to listen to. I have yet to get to video 120 yet. I hope there is enough to get me through the rest of summer and into the tail end of winter classes. I just want to say thank you for your indirect support through your UA-cam Channel. Hope I can scrap up some dough and one day get a boat cause of you. Thanks again.
As a South African I'd like to just extend my condolences to all the Kiwi's for their tragic loss against the Springboks AGAIN this weekend 🤣🤣🤣 but on a serious note it'll be good to see the dog's back with the boat. Fair weather sailing everyone.
Well said, also a saffa, hoping Colin comes past SA on his way.
Ive been watching you from the beginning. Haven't missed one episode. love the sentiment about your sadness with leaving your home country. Fair winds and following seas. I hope one day I will be able to sail on Parley. safe journey
Just came across your channel. Still on the 6y ear old episodes. I would've loved to help rebuild that boat with you guys. I regret not discovering the world of sailing sooner in life, its become my goal in life.
Thank you, Parley I'm good for another week.
Colon and Jamie... Congrats on completing your New Zealand leg of the circumnavigation! I'm sure you're all. ready for some TROPICAL weather! Anyway, I just wanted you to know that the cruisers from Oregon USA are still following your journey brothers!
brr!
Love you guys! It touches my heart to see the love & respect you have for one another. Hope no one got too seasick. Safe travels. ❤
Safe sailing guys hope there isn’t too much chucking
Lovely to hear your insights into your relationship with your Dad Colin. So pleased you were able to get to spend some time with him while you were in NZ. Seems like a fab crew, best of luck with the passage.
As always, great episode 😊 I appreciated this discussion on sea sickness!!! Also loved David's "cameo" appearance 😅😊 can't wait to follow the next leg of this journey!!
The epiphany of life.... and yes it goes by seemly even more quickly as the years pass. Always make time to tell the ones who matter that they are loved and enjoy the ride! Cheers!!
Wise words Colin.. 🙏 Bon Voyage Parlay!
❤❤New Zealand has been INCREASINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!
I love Jamie's laugh 😂
Safe travels 😊
SOOOO Happy 4 yall to be on your way ❤ Stay safe
so true Colin! my brother diagnosed with esophagus cancer and I suddenly realized how much time ...40 years...passed without me realizing how disconnected I was to my older brother.
Get er done now ! I’m in my sixties still in good health and can get around just fine but I also know that is not going that much longer as time is catching up to me. I had a chance in my early fourties and let it slip by. Just remember what you always say about regretting more of what you didn’t do than what did do. god speed parley crew
It’s great you can reconcile with your old man. My dad passed away before we could fix things up.
In a perfect world these episodes would be twice as long! Who am I kidding? In a perfect world I would be living that life not watching it on UA-cam 😂
Good to see Louis on board AND pictured in his Warrington kit (my home-town team). Top feller, had a chat with him in Perpignan when he was playing for the Catalan Dragons
really interesting episode. glad to have heard the human element for the beginning of a passage, which Parlay has done several times but always enjoyable.
I tried to meet you all when you were dry docked in Whangarei but by the time I realized you were there you had just left. So sorry to have missed you all.
Have an awesome safe trip and I will continue to follow you. Thanks Roger
Colin. Good luck and fair winds on the Fiji leg. It seems you've got a reliable, mature crew on board and I'm pleased to see you've taken some good luck charms with you. There could be no problems with an Aussie and a Rugby League player as your good luck charms. It'll be great to see the dogs again. I'll keep watching Kiwi!
@Colin... Oddly enough I didn't have a relationship with my dad for some time. That magic 40 came and I was able to let it all go! It is freeing! Thanks for you sharing. Love your journey!
Such true words about the time we have and how nothing is guaranteed. As a Fijian-Indian in Canada, I can't wait to see you guys enjoy my second home. A reminder cover shoulder and legs when visiting Fijian Villages considered disrespectful. There are so many great islands to see, and the people are awesome. Suva open market is a great place to find fresh produce. Ladies let's get Colin and Jamie into a Sorang'sulu'😊 May you find fair weather and happy sailings.
the comments about your dad, i can totally relate to especially now that i am 53 and my father is 85. There is a saying that i found initially a bit difficult to understand but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense and its really so true. As you get older the days get longer and the years get shorter. the more you think about it the more sense it makes.
This one really hit me in the heart ❤ thanks for sharing.
Haere ra Aotearoa, haere mai Fiji!!! What a life, another great episode. Words to live by Colin, don't wait to speak at a mates tangi, to speak of them, speak to them now! Onwards and upwards, great filming too Brit, cheers Parlayrevival!
Wise words Colin, my mom and I was estranged for years due to my own stupidity, but when I came around and needed her the most after a failed suicide attempt, she was there every day, and are my best friend and confidant today 13 years later after that faithful night.
The thing that settled my stomach down when I felt sea sickness coming on was to go topside and look at the horizon only. I could feel my stomach settle down, and I'd be good to go for the rest of the trip.
Beautiful words mate . Family is everything in the end. I lost my dad without reall re connecting. Its too late when they die, and you carry that loss the rest of your days.
So heartwarming Colin. Enjoy them while you have them. I used to talk to my mom everyday and now that she's gone I still have the thought that I didn't hear from her or I need to call mom. I wish I still could. My son doesn't talk to me. I wish he could have heard your message.
Howdy from Texas!!! Hope Y'all have a good, safe, and fast smoth trip!
Guys and gals yall r amazing thank u for sharing yall wonderful adventures god bless yall safe travels parlay ❤❤❤❤
I love your videos and love the crew. I feel like I'm on the trip with you guys. Your videos are the best. If you ever get to San Francisco, let me know. Dinner will be on me. You guys are the best. Thank you. Timbo
Colin, you and as a result, your channel are so very sincere, honest, insightful and inspiring, I'm so blessed to have both my parents fully supportive of my sailing aspirations and of everything I've undertaken in my life, you only have 1 family and regardless of everything else they're what count, 2 years ago as I was doing the last refit work and final preparations on my boat (hard chine steel Van De Stadt 34') for a single handed Atlantic crossing I had a fire break out below while I was doing a small welding job on deck, all necessary precautions were taken with several wet rags directly below where I was welding, fire blankets, extinguishers and a mate below keeping watch, somehow a spark or a something hot got into the polystyrene insulation and before we knew it the quarter berth was on fire, the extinguishers were hopelessly inadequate and it ended up gutting a large portion of the interior, brand new refrigeration, all instruments, inverter, autopilot, clutches, 2 self tailing winches, all portlights and so on, along with quite significant burns to both my shoulders and arms, my insurance company payed out about 50% of the total damages because I was under-insured on several items and hadn't yet added several upgrades and new items to my insurance policy, long story short, my parents were there for me all the way, they stood by me at my lowest ebb, and that's what families do, I didn't ask for their support and help, but they gave it unconditionally and it's only brought us closer together, I'm now in the final stages of rebuilding/refitting my boat after putting in basically my entire cruising budget to make up for the insurance shortfall, they've given me a place to stay,, fed me, just basically been there for me and haven't asked for anything in return.
Point I'm trying to make is that when the shit hits the fan, you can always count on your family to back you up.
Regarding seasickness........I'm one of the fortunate ones, never experienced it, not even upside down in the engine bay, with oil and diesel, at the nav desk at night doing chartwork, cooking, groveling in the bilge, and I've been in some really shitty conditions off the South African coast and offshore, many hours of night watches, many miles of offshore passages later and not one chunder😂😂😂.
Keep up the great videos, they're entertaining, inspirational and insightful❤❤
Spray paint the drone neon orange, its much easier to see in the sky, water or in a tree 👀
Colin, I was adopted from TX by two amazing parents who took me back to philly and raised me in their likeness. I struggled into my early 20's and at the age of 24 I lost my dad while in the moment of peak selfishness in my life. I remember him asking me to to go to a movie two days before and I said no. While I was watching the Paramedics cart him out of my house I couldn't shake the feeling of dread and regret for how I could have done better. Since then I've lived my life with the spirit of him in my heart and if I could ever become half the man he was I know I'll be okay. Cherish those around you, never forget to make the extra effort to remind yourself and them for how much you love the relationships you have. My dad taught me to sail when I was 5, and I haven't looked back since, I hope to one day be able to free myself from this everyday grind and get out there with you world adventurers, it's what I've been working so hard to achieve anyway... See you in Annapolis later this year, I'll be expecting a hug from all of you!
I understand and feel for you mate. I too grew up tough but looking back l realise my dad understood how short life can unexpectedly be n threw everything at me as fast as he could knowing this. He was a demanding man who was both worldly, physically and mentally tough and one of the best bush mechanics lve had the pleasure to absorb knowledge from. We too had our highs n lows and when l met a wonderful gal n raised our family and loosing her to cancer l look fondly back on what he taught me...never give up,do you best and learn from mistakes while always maintaining your integrity. Cheers
@@markhorrell9213 Mark, thank you so much for the thoughtful reply. I'm so sorry that you lost her to cancer, I cannot imagine. It's inspiring to see how you have kept a good spirit despite the loss, what choice do we have anyway? I'm a year from divorcing due to an affair she had but have picked myself up once again and pressed on meeting new and wonderful people along the way. My friend, I'm proud of us and I wish you the very best.
Dude I'm missing Dave so much lad he got a shout out. If you are having this epiphany at 40 just imagine where your dad is. I'm 63 and totally agree. Spend time while you can, my dad is gone. Miss him everyday. Thank you for another great video Colin. Carry on
Hope the passage is progressing smoothly, Parlay! Do you wash your fresh fruit and vegetables before storing? A quick wash with a very diluted vinegar bath can help the fruit and veg stay fresh, weeks longer in some cases. Just a thought if you haven't tried it before...congrats on the circumnavigation of NZ. Epic!
Very cool Colin! Great message and it sounds like you may be considering dropping anchor somewhere for more than just a few months!
Spent many many hours, days out on the Pacific and have never experienced motion or Sea Sickness. One of the lucky ones I guess.
GOOD JOB
I love the motion of the ocean and have never been seasick, I worked as a diving instructor on live aboards for many years too !
I can understand how it affects people though and have seen many people really suffering from it, almost everyone waits too long before taking the tablets, it's no good waiting until you feel sick because the pills don't have time to take effect before they leave your body !
love it!!
So loved your footage from Marsden cove out of the heads. I helped do some of the earthworks there and shifting a few of the piles for the moorings years ago. Great to see how its turned out.
Parlay is the most uplifting and optimistic sailing channel on yt.
Thanks for lighting the Sunday with people throwing up 😂😂 feel better calm water soon. 🎉
great video as always guys....wonderful words of wisdom....and you are on your way to pick up the dogs....yeah....safe journey and much love....ant and rab
See you next Sunday! Good sailing and fair winds!👀
My worst seasickness was crossing the gulf stream after a gale, sitting at a chart table staring at an unmoving solid wall while my inner ear said we were bashing through waves.
A few minutes on deck looking at a horizon that agreed with my senses was the only hope.
It was totally at odds with the old movie trope of watching a lantern swinging turning the actor green.
Fair winds and smooth seas on your journey.
You're all amazing in unique and inspiring ways! Together, you're the best! Thanks for the great editing/storytelling. Fair winds and following seas!
Scope patches work great. Hint- put a small piece of waterproof surgical tape over the patch. The adhesive on the patches is not great and fails when it gets wet.
Everybody is different.
For seasickness: Bonine + Gravol
I take one Bonine first and then a Gravol a couple hours later.
On long trips I take a Bonine before bed, a Gravol in the morning.
As a viewer the time has flown by, hard saying goodbye to the human family but I am looking forward to seeing the fur kids back on the boat. Watching from the west coast of Oregon, USA where we see few sailors in our waters, our part of the ocean is a bit of a bully 😜 and takes a special kind of crazy sailor to tempt her waters.
Love the farewell to proper kiwi dairy pies 😋
