      @TheRipeTomatoFarms I know, everything is so expensive. We have got to get gardening down. I am still confused on when to plant what but I will be watching close to make sure we get it right. Have a blessed day Brother Jeff

    Hi Jeff ~ I couldn't stand it so started lots of herbs which are growing very slowly, and 5 tomato seeds which are now 4" tall. We've had another blizzard here, roads were closed and people are running out of patience. At least we're done with January and Spring here, ground thaw, is March. Happy Gardening!

      Ha ha, I'm right there with you.....herbs in already, but at least we can turn them into indoor plants if need be. Itching for tomatoes and peppers though, no question.

    Thank you Jeff! ♥️ Figuring out what size of pots/trays/containers to start with and to up-pot and what soil to use to up-pot. Trying to learn from last year’s mistakes. The burning pressures to succeed this year. Have a wonderful day 😊

      Its definitely a science Melinda, but also some personal preference. There's people that don't like to up-pot and just start with bigger pots (great if you have the space), while others like me that will up-pot 2-3 times if need be! Whatever works best for you as you fine tune your growing is the best method in my opinion! 🙂

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarmsThank you for your advice. I totally agree it’s totally a science. My parents made it look second nature, so easy back in the day on our farm when life was simple back home.

      @@melindah5952 Ha ha that's because you weren't there for the early years of trial and error! Also, I think we tend to grow more exotic stuff now. Back then, it was what grew well for the area and farmers traded seeds. Now, we feel entitled to grow everything, even if our climates aren't suited. Having said that though, what are you most excited to grow this year??

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms Exactly! Well, I’ve planted broccoli for the first time last year. Huge success! Underestimated how big they grow 😂. And had good harvest of blueberries, peppers (Hungarian, Hungarian hot wax, cherry, jalapeno, cayenne and green bell). I’ve got some heirloom tomato seeds from back home. So tasty. Im looking forward to growing ginger! Making a container for them. Even though some were a miss, Im still looking forward to figuring out my mistakes and trying to grow them again. I think my biggest lessons so far is like you said, the entitlement to grow certain foods. I might love cauliflower, it’s been 4 years without any harvest. I think my homemade hoop-house with raised bed isn’t getting enough sunlight and/or poor soil. The later one I realized during growing season. Ph of 8-8.6. Trying to correct it w/o chemicals. Soil is so important!
      Love your wide variety of plant selections. Which ones are you excited to grow this season?

    Hi Jeff, thanks for this. I must say that your potting soil always looks so good. I was unsure when to start off my beef tomatoes. I started late last year but I still got some good ripe ones. The rest made delicious fried green tomatoes. Take care Maggie UK

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  4 дні тому +1

      Thanks Maggie! Its a homemade brew that never disappoints. Light and fluffy is the game for seedlings. With your tomatoes, and to a degree peppers, they can be started earlier than others because we can also plant them deep when they get too tall. So if you're itching to get started, those ones are usually forgiving. Best of luck this year! 🙂

    I am going to put a few things out trying winter sowing in baggies. Seeing as how we might have a couple days of snow! Have you ever done winter sowing? I was concerned here on the Island the warmer weather might start them too early. But i thought it is worth a shot!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      Fun stuff Connie! Yeah, our mild winters make it a bit dodgy. Rot and early sprouting is not uncommon. Gotta experiment and go with cheaper seed at first until you narrow it down to what works in your setup. Make take a couple seasons, but worth the investment!

    Since our last frost comes around the middle of May, I'm not going to start my seeds until the middle of March; mabe, I'll wait until closer to the end of March. However, I might try something different withe some of the tomato seeds and direct sow them a week before the estimated last frost. The seeds should stay dormant until conditions are right for growing. I think doing it this way would make for a stronger, more acclimated plant; but, not having ever done it before I can't be sure unless I try it.

    Im dreading the start of indoor seedlings growing due to fungus gnats. They entered my house with a peat moss based potting soil 2 years ago and I cant seem to get rid of them even tho I used everything even dunks. I tried sanitizing the soil by pouring boiling water on it but its not effective. Honestly, I think there should be other ways to grow seedlings. My russian grandma grew seedlings without store bought soil. They did not even have anything like that back in the USSR era.She is not alive so i cant ask her what she used. I would like to switch from using store bought soil altogether. Its not just the gnats, its the fact that they destroy peat bogs for it. Any suggestions? Thanks

      @@SH-jy6lc sand on the surface... They HATE it. Coupled with yellow sticky traps as they fly around looking for a way around the sand.... Boom, problem gone

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms Does not work. Even mosquito dunks dont get rid of them all. It reduced the population but they are still everywhere. I want to ditch peat moss based store bought soil altogether. This stuff is awful. I got my mint plant growing in just garden soil and its doing just fine. Probably will have to do that. Im puzzled that noone is talking about that? This is a real issue.
