Holy shit, this is insane, the Sonic community never ceases to surprise me, I had no idea an annual event for fan games of the IP existed, I'm really blown away at how much love people have for this brand. Sega is really lucky to have a fan base like that.
Sega's fans are like that one child that makes cringy and awful stuff, but deep inside, it cares about Sega and has potential which it tries to unleash.
yea which is why it's great they have content from all the consoles. yet people contiously calling them in names like sony foundry and stupid stuff like that...
There IS a official Sonic 2 recreation made by Taxman and Headcannon for Android and iOS, its in widescreen, fully 3D rendered Special Stages, a new Zone (Hidden Palace), save system per Act, no slowdowns, and tons of other tweaks, fixes, its amazing, plays incredible well on a touch device, and the soundtrack is remastered as well (but not remixed), its really cheap on Play Store, its the definitive version of Sonic 2. Theres a Sonic 1 version too, its amazing as well, made by Taxman and Headcannon. You don't even need a powerful smartphone/tablet, they run at constant 60 FPS even on older/weaker hardware.
The fans have reeeeally been churning out a bunch of great things lately. Goes to show what happens when a company isn't heavy-handed. Freedom Planet, although it chose to go the original IP route, turned out to be one of my favorite games ever. Sonic Utopia is a little TOO open in some ways and doesn't give enough reason to explore, but this could be iterated on and as a tech demo it's marvelous with the camera system not being bad at all. Sonic 2 HD is amazing, out of everything Sega could pick that one up really easily. So glad they decided to do Hilltop Zone (THE BEST SONIC 2 STAGE DON'T EVEN ARGUE). The Sonic 06 project is... puzzling. Either you should try and fix ALL the flaws of the game or leave the terribleness as is. They're going for this odd middle route of fixing glaring issues but not overall scope, like terrible set pieces and... Elise in general.
To b fair, Sega isnt doing too hot right now, to the point of being desperate of getting fans to help them out. Its good publicity and is a risk tht can hav a high payoff or not.
Sonic Utopia is the only one I want to play out of that lot. Instead of focusing on graphics and gimmicks, Sonic Team should have moved in that direction a long time ago. I thought Lost Worlds or Sonic Boom would have done it, but nope.
I always just wanted a Mario 64 style platformer. I honestly could care less if it has parts where Sonic can run fast, those are my least favorite parts of the games lol
Good to see Spark getting some love, the same guy also made "Sonic before the sequel" and "Sonic after the sequel", two excellent fan games that rival the original games.
3 years I had to wait untill I could get a PC powerfull enough to play the sonic 06 remake demo! But now I can play it 60fps with all the settings maxed out so I'm happy.
I'm so happy John mentioned sonic utopia at the end, thus sharing it with a wider audience. It really is amazingly unique and feels like nothing, and certainly no sonic game, I've ever played before. I strongly advise everyone who hasn't yet given it a try, to do so. It's just so good and emits an incredible sense of freedom, that I would almost say is unprecedented in a videogame.
Oh. OH. That Sonic Utopia footage looks like somebody is finally finding a way to do Sonic in 3D without being awful. God, I hope they get to expand on that concept, because making Sonic in 3D play somewhere between Mario and Tony Hawk seems like the perfect solution.
As someone who has been playing Sonic Utopia since I discovered it about a year ago, I can tell you that it is THE BEST THING EVER. The camera control, the momentum, the jumping physics, they're all just PERFECT. You should really play it. There are no words to describe it. I actually, despite it only being one level, kinda prefer it over any of the 2D Sonic games (good *or* 4). After so long of having it, I still don't think I've gone everywhere on the map, I can see ramps and boxes where I have yet to reach.
You know what? I didn't find Generations to be all that great. It was one of the better 3D Sonic games, but I find 3D Sonic games to be pretty lousy. For that matter, I find most 2D Sonic games to be pretty weak, too. Really, I don't know why I follow the series. I guess I want it to be better than it actually is, but there are always design problems that mar the experience. I think of Sonic as a good idea waiting for someone to get it right. Some games come close, but most are just flashy-yet-shallow experiences.
Aside from the troll comment, couldn't you have clarified that that (3D SONIC WAS NEVER GOOD) was just your opinion? Why did you have to make it sound like you believed that your opinion was objective fact? Please tell me.
It's Over 9000 Productions We'll see how they fare against a game that has multiple issues! If they can make the impossible possible, then I might just give it a try
YES! I would so be up for a full DF Retro video on Sonic 2006, hehe. Also, that Sonic Utopia game honestly looks incredible. The idea of exploring a fully 3D sandbox world as Sonic sounds like a no-brainer when you think about it, yet I don't think that's ever really been done before. I'd be so up for playing that.
I believe the intention, or part of it, with the 06 port is to offer something similar to disassemblies in hacking communities- a base for modding and fan alteration. With the game ported, then someone else can go and mod in better level layouts, etc.
great stuff as always. here are some games i think would be worthy of a DF retro episode: - Dawn of War/Company of Heroes (the essence engine was really impressive in 2006) - Ninja Gaiden 2004 (and all of its re releases) - gran turismo 4 (HD on a ps2 game!!!)
@DigitalFoundry Thank you so much for sharing Sonic Remakes also Please make a lot videos that has remake fan projects or officially i really appreciated so much!
Tfw Sonic 2 HD is more resource hungry than games like Tomb Raider 2013. Man, i think Rayman Origins and Cuphead need less resource than this fan game! This project need a lot of otimization.
I tell you what; my laptop ran Sonic 2 HD *FINE,* absolutely spiffingly. I'm not sure, however, that it would run Tomb Raider. I know for a FACT it won't run Fallout 4 (and yes, I know it came out 2 years later) at anything more than, say, 4 frames per second AT BEST, and it won't run GTA V (again, 2015)(Literally at lowest settings) at anything better than 20 FPS on average, only going into 30 "-ish" territory on VERY RARE, VERY SHORT occasions. Looking at Tomb Raider's specs on steam implies that I probably WOULD be able to play it though, however, I have no intention of doing so ever.
Don't forget about Sonic Z-treme for the Sega Saturn. This one, along with the already mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 PC, are undoubtely the best Sonic homebrew attempts ever.
@DigitalFoundry question, do you happen to know what software was used to animate the character sprites? I'm thinking ToonBoom but I'm not sure. Hope you'll respond thanks.
Looking at the progress and hearing that this is back to being worked on again, I for one can't wait to see how it turns out once it's finally complete.
If you're gonna do an episode on Sonic '06 in the future comparing it to this remake project, I think it's only fair to give another previous (possible defunct by now?) project. Just like you mentioned someone ported the Unleashed levels to Generations, there's the STH2006 Project which aimed to bring over the levels of '06 to Generations. At least for me, putting these levels into Generations and using the boost mechanic felt completely right to me. It's made by brianuuuSonic and got only as far as bringing over all levels up to Sonic's Tropical Jungle. A cool extra feature to this was a slightly different take on the hub world, especially once you had to travel to the future in game. As I remember this, I recall a second take on this project. I remember a guy named Melpontro built a really good Wave Ocean demo that was very polished. He made a few other levels as well but not as many as what you see in STH2006 Project. However his levels feel a little more polished in a few ways. They're different takes on the same concept.
Man, Utopia sounds incredibly interesting. Will definitely check out that demo. Can only imagine how good something like Metropolis would play in that format.
+Orange Swirl It was somewhat late and Humans tend to do that when things look similar to what you already know, hence I read it as Sonic Boom because the D and B look similar enough at a glance.
Awesome episode I appreciate you for doing this very much. For all the shit it gets, the Sonic fan base is much more dedicated and competent than most fan bases out there and I'm glad that with Mania and showcases of projects like this, the better side of the community can be seen by more people.
I think that Sonix Xtreme for Saturn would be the perfect Sonic 3D with the Sonic Utopia concept. Super speed, colorfull and landscapes with enemies along the stage and a final boss with Robotnik. COOL
The Utopia part is misinformed. Utopia won't be based on stages as wide as the one in the demo, the devs said themselves that the level design will be more focused (albeit likely much more open than the boost formula). The demo is supposed to let the players toy with the game's take on movement and momentum. Also check out Green Hill Paradise Act 2, which has a similar concept but with a more modern-inspired aesthetic.
In Sonic Utopia, you didn't mention at all about how the demo tries to bring back Sonic to Sonic 1. It takes it back to being a physics-based game. Never to do you see a speedpad or automated loop. Every bit of speed you gain is from momentum, and with mastery, it can make for some really rewarding and satisfying gameplay.
Sonic Utopia looks amazing. It's the sort of concept I've long wanted to see in a Sonic game. The speed of Sonic plus the exploration of other, better platforming games.
I'd love to see that 06 remake come to fruition. It's been a favorite of mine despite the bugs and glitches that constantly plague it and would love the chance to play it as it was meant to be played.
Until Sonic Utopia, the closest to a "3D Classic Sonic" formula I say would be Sonic Heroes, which is still quite different in a few areas. Modern Sonic in 2D is always being done now, so it'll be interesting to see this idea come into play
That Sonic 2 remaster is what all Remasters should strive for. I will totally pick this up when its finished. As for Sonic 06 - I would pick it up again just for the decrease in the load times alone. Those load times are goddamn horrendous and to this day I have only completed Sonic's campaign. Anyway excellent work from both teams - If these were Nintendo properties they would have been shut down instantly
I do not have nostalgia for the original game because I did not have the honor of playing it until just 3 years ago. The remade graphics grew on me instantly!
Sonic Utopia is sort of how I imagined a 3D Sonic game would be before there were any 3D Sonic games, except the version in my head looked worse because it was the mid '90s.
Sonic's having a great year! Sonic 2 HD looks promising and even the Sonic 06 remake. Hope we'll see Sonic 3 & Knuckles in HD! That sonic utopia game reminds of Sonic World from Sonic Jam.

Uhhhh YES @dark1x
DO IT
AVGN already did this
Hear hear!!! Good work John

I'd say John is my favourite out of the DF crew, especially with the DF Retro series.
vergil114 agreed!
From your profile pic i can see that you love nintendo, or at least their characters.
me yours look like captain kirb.
Would love to see Sega make Sonic 2 HD an official project. Also full 3D Sonic DF Retro ep pls.
Perfect remaster.
Rawjent Productions no the prefect remaster would be sonic 2 in the same graphics just remade in wide screen
GamePlayUK were is it at and this looks like crap. Sonic mania looks much better than this.
Perfect Flash game

Sonic Utopia looks outstanding. It would be awesome to see its gameplay fully realized.
