The 1997 Pepsi Independence Cup was a quadrangular ODI cricket tournament held in May 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the independence of India.[1] It featured the national cricket teams of New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the hosts India. The tournament was won by Sri Lanka, which defeated Pakistan in the best-of-three finals.
Sanath’s form in 1996 and 1997 was just unbelievable. Especially against India. Unstoppable.

Yes Sachin, Jayasuriya, Lara along with Dravid and Pointing all five greatest of all time batsmen playing, competing at the same time what a special time of the era it used to be. It's great to watch indeed.

I am not talking about the weak south Africa from 2001 onwards..the team from 1995 to 2000 when they had the highest winning percentage in the world which was their peak...from 2001 they were better in seaming conditions but an avg side in sub continent...

What a team SL was back then. It was truly their pinnacle in cricket and Jayasooriya could single handedly annihilate any team on his day and unfortunately India was the victim most of the time. Really feel for bowlers like Prasad, Prabakar and kuruvilla. What the opposition scores in 50 overs SL was able to beat that score in 40 overs

I remembered this match very easily b'coz I had gone to watch this match at Wankhede stadium in last moment there was no planning to go but suddenly we got 3 tickets from my frnd at 1:30 & match was at 2:30 day & Ngt match & at those days I was working at Queens rd opp at this stadium 5 mins only near by & we 3 of them took the urgent leave from boss to watch the match what the craze to watch cricket those days by watching legendary batsman & bowlers not like today 😊

Robin Singh has to be the most underrated and limited cricketer (apparently not as naturally gifted as were people like sachin) but he has to be one of the most selfless, hardworking and gritty people who played in 90s and 2000s. Someone you could bet on to bat for your life.
He was a through gentleman and a team player...great tactician too...
As an 80s child in Pakistan I never liked him coz he wasn't fast as a bowler not a waqar or wasim, he wasn't classy as a batsman not an anwar or saurav, he didn't look dashing not an imran but that guy made up for everything with his efforts....i only learnt to appreciate him once he retired.....all an all a gem...only editing this to mention his fielding...if world had ponting and rhodes.....India had him

From 1996 till 2000 these 4 years were really worst for indian cricket . I remember anwar and jayasurya used to tear apart the likes of venky, srinath and kumble. Things changed for good after the arrival of ganguly and then bowling started to look better with zaheer, nehra and harbhajan

And about royal thrashing, every indian cricket fan from the mid 90's is aware of the fact that Sri Lanka absolutely dominated India from '96 World Cup until December 97.
Sri Lanka had such an upper hand against us from 96-97. Jayasuriya and Desilva used to just destroy us in both the formats.India just won 2 games against Srilanka them in that period.

Then lossed odi series in Dri Lanka and Pakistan. Home series against Sri Lanka was drawn. Only success was at Sahara cup where they beat Pakistan, thanks to outstanding performance of Ganguly. Otherwise it was a poor team. Jayasurya, Anwar, Desilva, Lara everybody got back in form while playing Indian bowlers. Kumble also was out of form.

Watched it live at Bombay. Former captain Muhammad Azhar ud din was not picked for this tournament. Perhaps this was the reason, Indian bowling could not stop two swashbuckling innings in that tournament, one from Saeed Anwer's 194 and other from Jayasuriya's 140.
