Game of the finals series. Port needed luck and hit the post five times, whilst the Bays took their chances. 1987 was the year Port were expected to deliver and they didn't quite get there - they kicked themselves out of both finals games. Sad way for Ebert to go out, but the decision to appoint Cahill was the right one. Two weeks later and I did enjoy watching the Roosters knock the stuffing out of Glenelg - a crumb of comfort for the hurt of this loss
A dark day for Port Adelaide, and so sadly for Russell Ebert too. Not long after the heartbreaking loss, Ebert was sacked as coach of Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide lost a bit of its soul by sacking Ebert at the end of the 1987 season.
Knifed
Totally agree with you mate. Back then Port Adelaide were extremely ruthless for results, & unfortunately for Russell Ebert, he was the victim of that unhealthy quest of success. Luckily for Port Adelaide they were able to get John Cahill back to coach them & subsequently they were to have arguably their very best period in their history right up to their entrance to the AFL 10 years later. Right decision or wrong decision to sack Ebert & bring back Cahill? Maybe the right decision, but Port Adelaide still did the wrong thing in disrespecting Ebert. I suppose it is what it is. But if this situation had have happened today, Russell Ebert would still be coaching Port Adelaide for a few more years. His record coaching Port Adelaide is exactly the same as Ken Hinkley. And Hinkley despite his good record at Port Adelaide over the last 10 years, still hasn't won a premiership & haven't even made a Grand Final. Not his fault, but Port Adelaide are a lot different than what they have been in most of their history.
