  • Baldur is such a fantastic character. The liberties and shifts Santa Monica Studio takes with this character are fun and of course Bear McCreary's score is transcendent.

Bear McCreary has his leitmotifs on lockdown in God of War and in Ragnarok. Kratos, Baldur, Atreus, Fey, Freya, Odin, there are so many moments with and without dialogue where the usage of these character themes tell you exactly what you need to know about this person and how they feel at that moment, or what they're relationship with another character is. I swear, you could play this game with the voices off or in another language and the music would give you a pretty decent idea of what's going on.

Spoiler below, don't read if you don't want to know the end of GoW 2018.
Baldur's theme is sung by a choir at the end because he becomes briefly human with Atreus breaking the immortality spell. And the last thing you hear in the song is Kratos's theme because he is the one who kills Baldur and thus comes out the victor from the fight.

A real big misconception I would like to raise is that Baldur does *not* want to die specifically, he wants to feel something. ANYTHING! He misses the taste of food, touch, pain. He is completely numb to EVERYTHING.
And as such, when he faces Kratos (whom he mistakes for Fae), the supposed giant who went toe to toe with Thor, he is absolutely crushed and disappointed that he still feels no pain at all.
At the end of the game, rather than wish for death, he is so overcome with joy when the curse is broken and he is able to feel pain again, the breeze tickling his skin, he is overjoyed and goes hog wild fighting Kratos. Even to the end where it leads him to his death as a glutton for pain. But rather than cursing the world or his mom, it’s rather sad that his last words are just enjoying the fact that SNOW feels COLD!

The really cool thing, I think, is that Baldur is a dark reflection of Kratos. In the Greek stage of Kratos's life, after the first God of War game, he acted almost exactly like Baldur does in this game which is why, at the very end, he tries to talk sense into Baldur and gives him the chance to walk away.

This music and Baldr story really gets to me… I have lung cancer and I had my right lung removed which caused severe nerve damage, which means a large area of my back, side, shoulder, chest, and right arm are completely numb except for the odd bouts of lightning…
My point is this… I constantly have this tense, empty anxiety inducing feeling where I can’t feel anything… it just feels… wrong. Like… I honestly welcome those painful shocks of lightning because it reminds me that my body still exists there. I couldn’t even imagine my whole body feeling that way, for decades or hundreds of years! It would drive you insane!
Sometimes I get sort of… claustrophobic but also… anxious to just rip my skin off and get out of my own body to feel something on my skin again. I feel simultaneously crushed and also like I’m just floating in space where the numbness is, because when you lay down, you can’t feel the bed so you almost feel like you’re going to fall over or awkwardly roll away when you first lay back.. unless you press hard on my side I don’t even notice if you touch me, so a hug just feels like someone is missing half their arms and they just sort of slide around my body and then disappear.
Now imagine that EVERYWHERE! Never feeling the stability of the ground beneath your feet, never feeling comfortable or secure when you sit or lay down, never feeling a simple hug or handshake, much less romantic or sexual expressions of affection. It’s definitely more than enough to make you go crazy… I wouldn’t wish it on anyone!
The edges of my nerve damage are in near constant pain and feel like when your limb is asleep… that sort of sickening tingle, and I can honestly say that I prefer the pain to the numbness. So I understand why he laughs and celebrates feeling pain for the first time in centuries.
Also, I’m a mommas boy… and my mom had done things to keep me alive that I haven’t always agreed with so I absolutely understand Baldr and I can empathize with his suffering and I think he’s a really well written and acted character… Jeremy Davies did an amazing job with his manic energy and deep sadness.
I just figured I’d share my thoughts for anyone curious, because it’s easy to imagine that not feeling anything isn’t so bad… but until you’ve lived it… you really have no idea how awful it can be. To be clear though, I’m fine. My cancer is in remission and I’m generally pretty comfortable. 80% of the time I forget about my nerve damage until I lean against it, or sit down/get up.. etc. it’s something I’ve gotten used to and adapted to because it’s only a small area of my body and I can work around it.
I’m happy to answer any questions or anything or offer any help to anyone going through something similar.

I'm glad you are doing better and I hope you continue to do so, this was really informative, thank you for sharing as I have been one of the people thinking Baldur had it the easiest out of the gods. I related more to Odin and Thor with various aspects. Reasoning for my belief definitely stemmed from me rarely enjoying touching so it didn't sound like a bad idea. There are parts of my body I don't like touching myself at all and clothing has to be loose fitting as to not come in contact, I don't have any definitive reason for it at all, it is just somehow something I have, it does get worse with anxiety I've learned. So that curse sounded to me like a blessing taking anxiety and something I don't enjoy too much away with one swoop. But it would do to me what it does to you and create another kind of uneasiness. It would also increase derealization tremendously, sight and sound as the only senses left would leave you out of understanding why people dance and eat different foods also parts of music wouldn't be as good without the body. You would just do things with the world and stuff would happen, too far removed from other people's perceptions. Sorry for the essay I think I needed your comment and I am happy to have read it, I hope you are doing well.

I absolutely love this piece. It captures Baldur's personality so much and his pain of not being able to die thanks to his invulnerability. I recently finished God of War Ragnarok, and after putting a face on Odin and how he treated his only son left, Thor, the game really helped me understand why Baldur had become this vicious and maniacal being in the first game.
Overall, Bear McCreary made an incredible piece of music for this insane (no pun intended) antagonist.

Baldur is that way in GOW 2018 because this is a post myth baldur where he cant feel anything and thats twisted his mind so brutaly hes lost what made him baldur. In OG myth, everyone takes turns trying to kill the imune baldur, and loki crafts a spear of mistletoe (the most innocent of plants, therefore, freya did not ask it to not harm baldur) and i believe its Tyr who throws it killing baldur. You got to remember that santa Monica's god of war series depicts the gods as something completely different from what we know in real life, thus showing the player more "human" beings that are sometimes (but mostly) horrible for example it's really hard to find a "good" god in the greek saga, which makes me believe that the image and contrast between what we expect when hearing a name like Baldur (beautiful sane and pure person) and what we actually have ingame is completely intentional. In a way the God of War series really shows the true nature of its characters compared to what know of them in real life.

I’m a bit late. But on the topic of leitmotifs: I’m not certain but I that last little bit reminds me heavily of “The Hand of Odin” from Ragnarok, with the line “Raganarok i nai” it’s seems to be blended with the sound of Baldur and Kratos’ theme so it’s much more energetic, but the beat and pacing of it is very similar to that song and that specific line. I find this interesting because Baldur’s last words are “snow” in reference to his death being the catalyst for winter and the coming of Ragnarok, it seems to me Bear McCreary had Ragnarok leitmotifs even in the first of the Norse series. That’s some serious foreshadowing and some amazing composition.

He didn't feel absolutely anything. Not just pain, but pleasure, touch, taste, hot, cold, nothing. It's like being completely numb.
Also, there is an in-game text my Freya's house how Baldur is "radiating" golden light, and how "brilliant" he is. The directors were aware of the image of Baldur, but they did a little twist, and made it so that's just how Freya sees her own son, while the Baldur we see looks like some alcoholic from a run down pub.

He was also suicidal, if he couldn't feel anything he could hopefully be killed(would be the logic since he didn't know if his spell was breakable and the only one who knew how to do it claimed that it couldn't be reversed). Now by the end of the game when the curse is off he has his feelings back but still goads kratos into ending him, that may just be aesir conditioning "warrior culture stuff", but I also believe despite getting what he wanted he is still suffering mentally, his previous instability didn't vanish. Also to add to the reference to mythology bits, he was also a good kid once according to Freya he was a lot like Atreus, so being a kind person was a part of him we just didn't see it much outside of him sparing his mother out of love. And he also uses the light element when fighting kratos before absorbing frost and flame, so light is still incorporated.

With how Deliverance starts in accordance with how he's the Stranger. It's tense, and melodic. We just saw Kratos, THE God Killer get flung over his house. So now the strings project this sense of trepidation and danger.
Baldur, or rather the Stranger at that point in the story is a complete unknown. So we must approach him with caution. At least that's my interpretation.

That all he feels now is hope knowing Kratos will kill him. At the end during the beat down with atrues it was only vocals with no drums or violin. I really liked It because now he has hope that his suffering will end at the hands of Kratos.

Hello, I don't know if you remember, but back in September I suggested you listen to the soundtrack of game Hyper Light Drifter. I was impressed then, as I am now, by your unique take on the music "from the inside", and I was very interested to hear your reactions and emotions to this soundtrack then. The game speaks to the player without words and the melancholy of a once prosperous and now desolate world is conveyed very sensitively for me.
I hope I may have piqued your interest)

I might be misinterpreting it but I think it’s possible Baldur int the game was once the benevolent god he is in myth, but has over the years become bitter and hateful at his inability to feel, to enjoy some of the simplest pleasures of life, warm sun on your skin, a breeze on your face, even the taste of food was all taken from him.

Ehi Marco, riguardo God of War consiglio anche "Echoes of and Old Life".
È la traccia che viene riprodotta quando Kratos riprende le Lame del Chaos. Ed è così triste e potente che ti fa sentire quanto Kratos non voglia tornare ad essere il mostro che è sempre stato.

I listen to this track and I instantly recognize Bear McCreary and, for instance, Battle Star Galactica. I know that BSG will never be reviewed here, but the OST has a lot of remarkable and great compositions. In my opinion the series went downhill with the latest seasons and I've lost interest (religious and prophetical nonsense in sci-fi turned me off), but definitely not the OST. And in the end the music the major part of a success of the first seasons and will be remembered for a long time.

Can anyone remember Odin's, Thor's and Heimdal's theme? Because I can't. That's a massive reason why GOW2018 is better than Ragnarok, just more memorable.

    • @thembanitheone
      @thembanitheone Рік тому

I can. Mainly because Thor and Odin kind of share one which kinda implies that Thor is only an agent/tool of Odin and All-father is really the one you're fighting. I remember Heimdall's too but it sucks, nothing memorable about it like you said.
You're still right 2018's is better sonically though I do enjoy both.
