- It's really fun to hear a piece like the Nameless king knowing full well that this is something that could have been written in the classical time period. The way it moves and uses the very classical instrumentation is so fantastic and feels very archaic while also being quite modern. Loved it.

Literally never knew that he had Gwyn's theme in his own. This is the reason why I like music analysis channels more than just music reaction.

Marco's realization that the nameless king is Gwyn's son made me grin so hard lmao.
I love this song because it have elements from Gwyn's theme and from Ornstein & Smough. And knowing the connection of these characters, all fits in place.
The whole soundtrack is like a mix between o&s and gywn with some new elements. Which makes sense because this probably the last “god” from the age of fire that is still alive.

@@yanatrei5965 listen to the parts in 6:40 and then in 9:48. They are similar to the beginning of the Ornstein & Smough Theme. Maybe it's a coincidence, but to me it is really similar.

seeing the nameless king's hand trembling as he strikes down his dragon companion in the phase change cinematic, even masked you can sense the emotion of him and nothing puts chills down my spine as much as that. And after turning to face you and walking in your direction as the music kicks in. This is what makes his fight one of the best in my opinion.

Part of what I love about this fight is that the first phase feels like you're the unwelcome guest and he's trying to get rid of you. Like he's the son of the Lord of Sunlight, (possibly) the God of War himself, has probably killed countless dragons before allying himself with them, and you're some lowly undead who is intruding on his sanctuary and needs to be put in his/her place.
And then you kill his dragon/closest friend (I assume), and phase two feels like he's fighting you because he *wants you dead.*
Phase one feels he's fighting you on principle. Phase 2 is when it gets personal. And I love how the music really reflects that
I still remember the first time I got to phase 2 and he turned to face me all I said to my mate as "ah shit, we're dead..." 😂

I am honestly amazed. When you said that Gwyn's theme was mixed in, you just actually confirmed one of the biggest theories in the Dark Soul Universe, without even knowing the lore.

@@joedumas1047 Not just his son, but specifically THE firstborn son still worshipped by the Warriors of Sunlight for countless generations, who was disinherited and stripped of godly status by Gwyn. No doubt for forsaking his place as the prime example for all Dragonslayer knights, and instead becoming an ally to dragons and drakes. Unfortunate that he would never have a chance to reconcile with his father... especially not after the First Sin of linking the Flame.

That theory was already been confirmed years ago because of the music, the statues and so on.
"unbelievably powerful", couldn't have said it better. Had to laugh, this boss just really has a special ability to lock people in a cycle for hours.
My fav part of this entire piece is between 4:02 and 4:32, first you have the harpsichord solo that gives the impression of nobility, regality, someone from a noble family, as he was indeed the Prince of Lordran, firstborn of the Great Lord Gwyn.
And then you have the menacing brass and male choir that comes after, and the thunderous drums, telling you that you're fighting the Old God of War, and he hasn't lost his touch despite being a hollowed husk of what he once was.
Fun fact: While it was technically confirmed that he IS indeed the exiled and erased Firstborn of Gwyn, it's also said that the firstborn was a God of War, and the Lion Knights of Forossa set states that their armor is based on the old God of War Faraam, hinting his original name. There is a whole theory that after his exile, he traveled to many lands, amassing folowers, one of this lands was Forossa, being known as their king and god of war, until eventually abandoning them and reaching the Archdragon Peak, where he and his other followers allied with the dragons and he became their king aswell, dropping the God mantra and being known only as King.
The helm of the Faraam set also has an engraving depicting a man riding a dragon, which 100% solidifies this for me.
@@starofaetherius The Wargod Wooden Shield has something resembling two dragons painted in it, and references an old god of war reverred in remote lands, I think that shield was also present in DS2, and in 3 it's mainly used by Manserpents iirc.
His name must have been Faraam. There's two distinct patterns to the naming of Gywn's children.
If we assume his Firstborn is called Faraam, you've got: Faraam, Gwynevere, Gwyndolin, Fillianore.

Firstborn and lastborn start with an F. Middle children with a G. Not to mention how Faraam was the God of War, and how he's depicted as a man riding a dragon. I don't see any alternatives. It makes complete sense that his name was Faraam.
The Nameless King is, indeed, the son of Gwyn. It is confirmed, especially in japanese descriptions, that his lore is as follows
(for Lore Fans: don't worry if you find some descriptions different or if you remember other things. DS3 and ESPECIALLY DS1 (which is needed to understand Nameless King as a character) have both some translation problems, that don't come not only from wrong translations but also from Japanese's Kanjis sometimes having different meanings since their culture is so abstract. We in ITALY have a UA-cam and Twitch content creator called Sabaku No Maiku who did UNHOLY research on this translations and lore, giving us fairly correct answers, even more than people like Vaatividya, which is THE international Souls Lore creator)
The Nameless King was the first born of Gwyn, his rightful heir. Gwyn, Ornstein and NK fought together in the war against dragons in the early stages of the transition into the Age of Fire. After discovering about the flame burning out, Gwyn linked the first flame, sacrificing himself for the good of HIS reign (not humanity's).
For some time Nameless King became the King of Anor Londo. During his reign (which isn't explored a lot) it's clear that he wanted to either integrate or at least RESPECT the dragons and their descendants. In fact, either during this time or during the war, he became friend with the dragon that we see him riding in the fight.
Gwyndolin didn't like this, and probably no god alive did. So he was exiled from Anor Londo, stripped of his godly name.
So he isolated himself in Archdragon Peak, committing himself fully to the Path of Dragon Cult, which was already present in the times of DS1 events.
And in DS3.....you enter his territory.
in particular, this is also a reason why I don't strictly follow to "lore interpreter" they are still subject to misinterprets and/or trying to force a link that's sketchy at best.

@@inciacci549 Nameless King "lost the annals of history" he was not "lost TO them" if that's the description youre thinking of. Huge misconception. He either literally lost (intentionally or accidentally) a written record OR possibly just symbolicly went against the teachings of their history (i.e. befriending dragons)
@@starofaetherius No, that's the mistranslation. Dude didn't "lose a text" or something, he was himself stricken from them. However, it also wasn't Gwyn who did it. Even the English translation states that NK left the miracle on his father's coffin "perhaps as a final farewell" and why would he leave it on a coffin if Gwyn was still around?
If you ever replay ds3 and go to the "Aldrich, Devourer of Gods" bonfire, at the back of the boss arena there are 2 statues: one for Gwyn and the other one of Gwynevere (sry for incorrect name spelling if there is), and to the right of Gwyn there is an empty space... interesting isn't it?
Same thing with Dark Souls 1 after O&S
This is what led to the beginning of the theory and mystery of Gwyns firstborn in the first place. It was the same in DS1 and many people wondered who it was who had their statue removed.

It’s a cool detail that the nameless king’s theme borrowed a bit from Ornstein and Smough’s theme and slightly from Gwyns theme, since the Namless King has a connection with all of them lore wise
A lot of people prefer the second phase music but to be honest the first phase hits me harder with that beautiful violin... It literally feels like I'm fighting a gargantuan foe inside the storm, this ost would be perfect with the sounds of rain in the background.
I believe you listened to an extended remix of the track but the original was shorter and I agree that the first section had this regal and powerful feel to it which in some way...overpowers the second. It's highly reflective, I believe, of the Nameless King himself.
He is "nameless", forgotten, shrouded in mystery. The long lost, forsaken firstborn of Gwyn remembered only as the King of Dragons - nothing more, nothing less. That's why the first theme gave so much more. His identity lies in the second but everyone (including the Nameless King himself) associates more with the first.
I'm convinced that NO ONE has picked up that Gwyn reference other than you and it's mind boggling. So far, it's only been speculations as if even we, the players, do not truly know who he is either.
Yuka kitimura and Motoi Sakuraba did an amazing job with the dark souls soundtracks. I hope we can hear more of your analysis on these amazing songs
Not only there is Gwyn's theme in it, but this is one of the very few tracks of Dark Souls 3 that was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, the first game's composer, adding this to the spectulation. It's not a coincidence that he also composed Aldrich, Devouerer of Gods, which is a callback to his original Darksun Gwyndolin track (those who know the lore will understand the connection)!
The new format is very coherent and a great evolution of your style. I think most souls fans will say you're spot on here (as usual)!
Amazing. When the music is do perfect that it really tells you who this character is. When the Nameless King sided with the dragons as in the lore you read. His name was meticulously wiped off the face of everything. Which is why he is nameless.

Sakuraba seems to prefer his compositions to exude two things: it's either an organized cacophony of deranged, scary and all powerful monstrosities or serene, eerie and melancholic places such as Firelink Shrine or Majula. Of course, he can blend many other motifs but I can't shake off the feeling that what he loves the most is to musically describe how wild and dangerous these enemies are. Take Nameless King as an example. A king in many cultures is akin to a god of some sort. That doesn't fall far from truth in Dark Souls where Gwyn was, in fact, a god. To be a god is to shape and rule the order of the reality and Gwyn surely did that. Nameless King seems to be the same in the eyes of Sakuraba. He's not just another herculean figure to beat. Notice that his (and his dragon's) very presence brings turmoil in the skies as they erupt with violent winds and stormy clouds. It clearly isn't something that Vordt or even Pontiff Sulyvahn could match.
Nameless King was my favourite boss as soon as I fought him (and my first in-game cosplay) but I never noticed that musical cue. These are the kind of insights I love this channel for!

I love how light the music almost feels. You fight him in the clouds and it almost seems whimsical like the music itself is a blustering wind matching the pace of the rider and his dragon in its own dance
I'm surprised the wiki still describes it as speculation when the game is literally handing us the answer on a silver platter with the item descriptions blatantly stating that he IS indeed the heir of sunlight and that both his crown and armor bears a striking resemblance to Gwyn's crown and armor

The Betrayal of the suns first born, once the scourge of dragons, the inventor of the dragon-slaying armaments, and the acclaimed God of War. Lost and buried deep in the anneals of history. The sons first born took a liking to the dragons he fought a war against. This evolved into kinship, and eventually the great betrayal of the sun.
Now a lowly ash tolls a bell never to ring. A king returns to the world answering the toll, and a fight ensues, with a lowly ash, and a Nameless King of Old.

I love harpsichord and I love it when FromSoftware uses it (and they use it so much). What you say about music for music's sake compared with music telling a story reminds me of the opening part of Fantasia (the original, not 2000) and how he explains the differences between music just being music versus music creating certain imagery versus music telling a definite story. To this day Fantasia remains one of my favorite Disney movies and I watched it so much as a kid that I could pick out a simplified version of the Fugue part of Toccata and Fugue in d minor by ear.
As for what this music makes me feel, I agree with you about the power and courage in his theme, but it also just terrifies me, lol. I'm still stuck on him. I'm so stuck on him that I went and played Bloodborne after having been on a break with it for a few months. I beat Lady Maria the other day and was euphoric about it for a while; her music really conveys how the fight is a waltz and having experienced it for myself finally, it really was like dancing with her. As for the Nameless King, it's just brutal. I can reliably get to phase 2 each time, sometimes with very little damage taken, but then phase 2 absolutely stomps me and kicks my teeth down my throat for good measure. Champion Gundyr was tough, but I got to where I could read his moves pretty well and got a handle on his speed. That moment hasn't happened in phase 2 of the Nameless King yet. The music going also conveys to me a sense of fear on the part of the player. Certain parts of his theme also remind me of Flight of the Bumblebee.
The technicality of the music conveys also that the Nameless King will brutally punish mistakes. Mistakes such as the player panicking and rolling too much. Everything has to be perfectly timed with him; everything from hits to rolls to buffs to heals. Other bosses are a lot more forgiving when the player incorrectly times a heal or a roll or a hit. A lot of hits are survivable even from harder hitting bosses. That's less the case with the Nameless King. The slow approach he does in phase 2 is very reminiscent of Pontiff Sulyvahn and it's just as terrifying. They're both confident in their power and their ability to beat you to a pulp, but at least the Nameless King is optional. Pontiff isn't and he can be a major wall for many players since the game really stops playing around when you get to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.
I had a paragraphed typed up explaining about him being Gwyn's son before you got to that point in the video. I've been too focused on the fight that I haven't heard Gwyn's theme in it myself.

The circling sound and kind of fluttery nature really just puts me back into the feeling of being just out of reach of the king of storms head and watching NK fly around me. The fluttery sound gets more intense as he's preparing his dive bomb swing. Really makes me feel like I'm at the mercy of powerful foe when everything crescendos.
It never fails. Whether it's music that I've delved deep into, obsessively listening to the different ideas and opinions of musicians or music producers or directors or what have you, or pieces like this one that I didn't listen to with very much regularity, I always come out of your videos with a much deepened sense of appreciation for what the music is trying to say. Like a few others have already said I never caught that The Nameless King's second phase worked Gwyn's theme into it, but given his lore the use of that motif is so perfectly fitting. You're an absolute treasure, Marco! Keep making these and I promise you, I'll keep on watching!

What I like a lot about this song is that it feels like it belongs more in Dark Souls 1 than Dark Souls 3. The instrumentation and tone has that kinda, ancient pristine reality and power that some of DS1 whereas DS3 has these loud bombastic dramatic and bleak pieces. The difference being that Nameless King’s theme has DS3’s better sound quality. It really stands out from some of DS3’s other songs that can sound fairly similar at times
Definitely makes sense seeing as Nameless King is pretty much the last remnant of Gwyn's family at that point

All these theories about TNK speculations and I never heard mention of the music at least to my knowledge. Music plays such a big role to bosses that it sometimes can be an oversight while fighting.

OMG dude when you pointed out the Gwyn portion of his theme I legit got goosebumps all over. I never noticed that which makes perfect sense seeing he is the first born of Gwyn and the rightful heir to Lordran despite what Gwyn says!

I noticed right away and always thought everyone knew about this already.
There is lots of these connections on DS Music, the most famous being the Gwyn/Soul of Cinder connection.

Also I heard a similar piece from Sakuraba with similar themes (Sovereign Vholran from Tales of Arise)

i interpreted descending plinks as representing the tempest and rain around you and the power of the stormdrake. at 7:07 of the video the harpsichord plays the same downward motion showing that the king has mastered the storm. it is his storm now.

I havent put the necessary attention to this song, im very bad with understanding music, still learning, but this one makes me feel like an urgency, something imminent, dangerous but fluid as you say, like something watery.

Unbelievable, you could recognize Gwynn in his music, indeed Nameless King is the first of the 4 children of Gwynn: Filianore, Gwynevere, Gwyndolin and himself, with unknown name.
A god of war banished by his father and having any statue of him completely erased from the kingdom for befriending the greatest enemies of the royal lineage, the dragons.
He wasn't banished by his father though.
@@StephanuSneedThen who banished him? Gwyndolin? Where would he get the authority to do so, the only way i could see it happen is that the entirety of Anor Londo turns against NK and shuts him out. Plus, remember that Gwyndolin was also frawned upon and it took a long ass time for him to be able to enstablish himself as the ruler of Anor Londo. Maybe NK left himself? Just dipped out and went on with his life?
@@grassblock7668 Pretty much. He proposed to do something his people didn't like, they refused and he decided to walk away. We know it all happened peacefully because he was allowed to leave a gift in his father's tomb before walking off.
After that, everyone agreed to delete him from the records because he was seen as a massive failure in comparison to his father. Whether this happened while the gods were still on Anor Londo, or it was done separately by Lloyd in the human world and by Gwyndolin in Lordran is never stated.
The music also reminds me a little of a storm or a tornado which is fitting with the whole arena you're Fighting him being a huge storm.
You earned my subscription after this musical analysis especially after helping me discover Gwyn's theme in phase 2 :D

i'm late to this but everyone in the comments already pointed out the cool things in this piece so all i can say is that this is a painful reminder of how many hours i spent on just this boss alone. the fact that killing his steed doesn't even count as a second phase is some real bullshit but i think that contributes to how effective the music is at making the player scared to fight him
2:22- that music is also very much like flight of the bumblebee. Which is obviously about something flying around. I always loved that little section.
I feel a little smarter now, because everyone's saying they've never heard the gwyn leitmotif. Of course i heard it with the lore knowledge, which makes it all the more impressive he did it, with very minimal lore knowledge.
When raging during this fight, one might say:
“Sonuva Gwyn!”
I legitimately never even considered those three/four notes from nameless king to be a nod to gwyn's theme until you pointed it out (and then looked it up to see that you were right)

Nameless King took me 136 deaths to beat. The most deaths I've had to a Souls boss. It was brutal. I hated it. But I did beat it. Then I came back to the game in a NG+ 3 run for the Platinum and beat him first try.
Then Malenia comes in for 726 deaths with my Strength/Solo only run at some point later down the line of me playing Elden Ring. It was excruciating. I ended up beating her too. I am never do that again. lol
Every time i listen to it, amonst many epic things, I ear a very powerfull storm in the first phase. When I fight him, I always have the impression to fight a storm. A sad, majestic and godly powerfull storm...

Nameless is a fan favorite and hardest boss in dark souls 3 for he’s Gwyn’s first born and the god of war
Nameless king is a BOSS, being Gwyn's son, the son of probably the most powerful being in dark souls, you'd probably be quite powerful and quite sure of yourself. Nameless king is just so cool lore wise and his fight and music definitely respect that. The first phase just makes me think that he thinks and kind of knows that he's just better than us, he's truly the king of storms. And in the second phase he's still definitely "better" than us, he's still confident and he can take his time cause he knows he'll catch us some time but there's also this kind of measured rage. I personally think that when you pointed out gwyn's theme initially that part felt really uncomfortable to me so I think maybe at that point he may be kind of worried that since his father has basically completely erased me from history and that this nameless undead is kinda starting to beat me he could just be completely forgotten by everyone forever. There's such deep storytelling in these games and in their music, there's lore seeking out of every single aspect of this game, and it's amazing seeing the connections you make without even remembering fighting the boss lmao!

So this is my interpretation. You hit the first phase right on the money only I have a feeling that its fast paced and energetic because we don't know who he is yet. When his dragon dies, it becomes apparent who he is. He is gwyns first born and the music reflects that perfectly. We see him we know who he is, and we are afraid.
I listen to this and for some reason, I am imagining a sort of descent. As if we had our main character in a very high point of a hill and he had to make his way downhill against a whole entire army.. As if this certainly were his last stand, so to say, and he knew that there was no coming back from this alive, but he still had to do this, because it is his duty, it is what he has done his whole life, and if he must perish while he does this, then so be it.
Also knowing now that there's the clue to this character being Gwyn's son? Now I am even more hyped up for the moment when I finally get my hands on this game.

Gwyn's theme intermingling with the Nameless King's theme makes sense to me since he is the Firstborn Sun of Gwyn, its even in his theorised name "Faraam" which means either "I am the Firstborn Sun" or "I am the Firstborn of the Sun God" which his name is a combination of 3 different languages "Fa" which is chinese and means firstborn "Ra" which is Egyptian and is the sun god, and "Am" which is supposed to be Hebrew basically meaning am or I am
