Smack Studio is a fighting game that lets you import pixel art characters, rig them, then use them in-game, or export them. You're allowed to use exported characters in other games.
Fun fact photoshoot , dragonbones , and spine and every outhers 2D animation that can produse a fake 3D effect works in the same way as live2D . You won't free version of live 2D no problem go to dragon bones no I am not joking not only do they work in the same way's but dragon Bone's is more like sprites . But you get free updates and you can make a fake 3D puppet as well . Face it even some of the free software of 2018 kicks so match ass
It is extremely booming right now due to VTubing swapping over from Japan. The two most commonly used applications (Vtube Studio and Facerig) can both only import Live2D files for 2D. Nothing else.
Problem with dragon bones is that there are not much tutorials on setting rigs (not basic) with many IKs and stuff, lack of documentation for its classes and functions for manipulating animations through code which is another big letdown. Otherwise It's ability is as good as spine.
Moho was released by LostMarble in 1999 I believe... before being bought and sold and renamed and then renamed back to Moho and I'm fairly confident this was the very first 2D animation app with bones.. Back then the absurdly buggy Autodesk Animation Studio was the only real alternative on windows.. it was the the successor to Animator Pro (by YOST Group, you know the guys behind 3D Studio for DOS that eventually became 3D Studio Max), Animator Pro came out in 1989 and was rather groundbreaking...
You are missing Live2D which is extremely booming right now due to VTubing swapping over from Japan. The two most commonly used applications (Vtube Studio and Facerig) can both only import Live2D files for 2D. It's becoming very big. It's also used in most Visual Novel games.
The first 2D skeletal animator that i can think of was Lost Marble Moho first released in 1999. It was frequently used in Flash game development around early 2000s.
I find it very interesting that people are more concerned about Dragon Bones phoning home than (for instance) VSCode... or Windows. Does it really matter who's spying on us? Isn't it enough that we're being spied upon?
The granddaddy, the first 2D character animation software that was based on bones that i've seen would be Lost Marble Moho from 1999. Makes it 20 years old now! It was vector based rather than cutout based and had Adobe Flash export, and was back then frequently used for character animation in Flash games.
Can any one with Spine and Creature experience tell me which is better for a solo Indie Developer? Creature looks more streamlined, but I have no experience with any of these tools.
I just can't find any Bone animations software's thats on mobile except for Flamingos animator and even then you 0:08 can't export I as a transparent video/gif
Open toonz, Anime Studio (Moho), Adobe Anime CC and Toon Boom is not geared towards a specific demographic market is it designed for all types of animation. For OpenToonz has a combination of using the plastic tool to create a mesh for pixel or vector deformation with uses bones with this tool. you can also use the schematic view and break up a drawing to work like bones as well. In testing I have used most if not all of these software to figure out the best workflow with the most being in flash now Animate CC. For the animation programs it is more export still frames, gif or animation files. Unless Moho (I see version 12 does not have fbx support which is new), Toon Boon and Animate has a bone export function or added some new functionality in the most recent versions. Most animation programs just export out the still frames or movie clips for post or direct publishing. Once open toonz becomes a bit more stable I think this tool will far surpass the others. I would also like to add Blender 2.8 with the update of grease pencil with it adding functionality 2d animation has gotten even easier in Blender and you can integrate multiple cameras seamlessly. Most of the animation apps have camera but they don;t work in a 3d space like blender does. Soon as the stable beta version come out that maybe a targeted tool I will use to create shorts with or game intro animations. All have there benefit it is just what you like and animations takes time, not as much as a comic or a game depending on the game. But to make it good it takes time and planing. Thanks again for sharing.
Sorry if I may sound a little bit odd, but doesn't Mike sounds to you as a little bit drunk? :) TBH he sounds like he have a really nice weekend here :) Thumbs UP anyway, because I just like his videos and tutorials. Keep up a good work, good sir!
I has but not so good as others. DB, Spine animations could be manipulated by code, has IK, each image part could be swapped and many lifesaving features.
Dragonbones for quite awhile is hving problems the devs seems to be offline feels like they dont care anymore, i tried the program found it interesting and easier then spine pro (i found spine confusing) but idk who thought that making save and export funciont only acessable through log in its a dumb ideia but the problem is that no one is being able to create an account so using the program is useless since ur progress wont be saved (those who hv accounts are safe).
im really interested in Spine 2D. ive seen some game companies looking for spine animators. so, Im gonna try with that to start. Im already into the animation in softwares like 3D MAX or MAYA. But as an illustrator spine looks pretty cool. what do you think people?. anybody knows hows the job market for this kind of softwares? spine or others.

Glad to hear it's not a mission! I was l looking at purchasing Spine as I had already purchased GMS, but it seems that integration into GMS is not well supported with little promise of it coming in the future. I've jumped on the Godot train and I am loving it! It's free, powerful and feature full!
DO NOT USE TOON BOOM HARMONY! You'll need the full package to get the most out of it. Their Unity plugin is broken as well and is incapable of being used as a game tool!
I agree! I've had to export all my game animations as spritesheets because the Unity middleware hasn't been updated in ages. Jeez, a simple walk produced a 4800 line .xml!!
I almost forgot about my dragonbones comment: the issue with dragonbones is that the "terms of privacy policy" you have to agree sends you to a webpage in Chinese... right? account.egret.com/protocol/privacy if you translated the things in it are actually spooky. basically they run thru the hard drive checking installed programs and more and share it with 3rd parties associated with them. in theory you can turn this off (no idea how, saw this document and said screw this XD) and they claim they are not sharing it without your consent (like that ever stopped people collecting information) and maybe the weirdest part is... is that the document seem to be for another piece of software! basically smells fishy all around
If ever you want to expand the list, there's this add-on ( www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/creature-2d-skeletal-and-mesh-animation ) for Unreal Engine 4 that I've never truly tested but that seems to do the job
Moho was the worst... Even the trial was buggy. Andddd i bought the disk... Everything was soooooo buggy. Wouldnt save 90%of the time annnndddd sometimes wouldn't open on time. :( regrets. But returned. :)

Today's unity blog side effect topic! :P Awesome compilation!
As for coa tools, I guess we can export it as fbx and manipulate it during runtime like any 3D animation.
I remember Spriter is the first came out, and developers of Spine just cannot wait for its final release, so they build their own. That kinda story...
I find it very interesting that people are more concerned about Dragon Bones phoning home than (for instance) VSCode... or Windows. Does it really matter who's spying on us? Isn't it enough that we're being spied upon?
You missed the DUIK plug in for after effects. Combined with Sheetahs sprite sheet plugin can make after effects pretty powerful for sprite creation.
