    Blender!
    It's worth mentioning that Blender has the full rigging toolset, as well as frame animation. In the 3D realm, Freestyle offers some great NPR rendering options for linework and all that. Finally, the new Eevee engine is capable of great toon shaders, if you know how to wrangle a node network.
    All in all, steep learning curve if you want to get the full power out if it, but totally worth it! All it costs is time and persistence.

    Somehow, this is the clearest and most useful explanation of 2D software so far. Really interesting, especially about Open Toonz! I'd assumed it was mostly a gimicky software but I'll definitely have to give it a look! :) What would you say is your no.1 tip for learning Harmony? I've been meaning to get into it but it has so many features and just feels a bit intimidating to a newbie!

    • @kdsketch
      @kdsketch  6 років тому +31

      Thanks Hollie! I just hope it helps, a lot of people new to animation see the pricetag of the software for TVP and Toonboom and think they'll never be able to animate because the software's just too expensive. That and it's always nice to know there's free alternatives out there because who doesn't love free stuff haha :) I've been thinking about giving OpenToonz a try too because it looks pretty decent (and it's been updated since it's initial release to make things a little smoother I think). I'm saving up for Harmony at the moment, I probably would have bought it when I was in uni if they had the discount for students to buy it like TVP does. The best way to get to grips with it is to watch a lot of tutorials and to make stuff with it. OnionSkin has quite a few good tutorials for Harmony I think :)

      I'm really glad you found the video helpful! The more expensive ones are 'professional grade' and are typically used in the industry by studios/shows where if you get a job there they'll already have the license - I use TVPaint 11 Pro as my main because I learnt it at uni (and I got a massive discount 😂) but I think it's worth it. If you're just starting out though I'd definitely go with the free versions, a lot safer than spending 2k on a software then realising you don't like it/want to use it anymore.

    Currently, I use Toon Boom Harmony 16 Premium and edit in After Effects CC and Sony Vegas Pro 16 but your reviews of each of these softwares gives me hope that other newer creators who are beginning to get into the industry won't have to struggle with money because their interests got the better of them. Animation is such a hard thing, but note that using professional programmes does not make you a professional. I can't say I'm a professional really, I do commissions but I do not take up job offers, etc for my art. Art is still more-so a hobby to me as I am more leaning to the writing industry but art is what you make it: it can be stressful or it can be a breeze. Everyone has unique art that the world hasn't seen yet so it's wonderful seeing new artists eagerly come into the scene. I just really don't want to see them give an arm or a leg to afford these softwares.

    • @kdsketch
      @kdsketch  5 років тому +2

      I definitely agree with you there! I'm so glad there's more free options available now that animation can be so much more accessible to everyone rather than just the people who can afford to buy/rent the software - even with a free trial they're never usually long enough to see whether they're right for you or not. It's true that the software doesn't make you an amazing animator, it's all about practice, but I've applied for jobs and been rejected because I didn't have experience in the right software, a lot of it I didn't even know existed before I started looking at 'requirements' on the applications! Obviously if you're just animating for yourself and not trying to get into a studio you can use whatever you like, even if it's not 'professional' standard :)

It's also on mac and windows but I haven't tried those versions and I think the developer focuses more on the app. I'm planning on making some basic animation tutorials and tasks for the channel in the next couple of months too - and you should definitely check out The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams, it's a great base to learn from!

      Paper is NOT cheaper at all... if you want to work in the industry or make money doing it. Also, paper isnt software. It clearly stated "2D Animation SOFTWARE"....not 2D Animation Resources. Coming from a 2D animation background: punched paper, pencils, drawing setup (animation table + disk /pegbar), pencil test equipment (camera and compositing software) is NOT cheaper whatsoever especially in time commitment, if you plan to animate at a higher level than hobbyist. Investing in all the equipment needed even for traditional 2D (see above), the time to do it all (actual drawing animation, testing the animation via pencil test, fixes reshooting. final clean up, etc) is way way more time intensive, expensive than the software route. Time is money and this is exactly why studios use digital software and equipment even when doing 2D.

    Serious Moho user here.
    Used the thing since version 11 and I love it to death. The biggest issue for me was the lack of frame by frame animation tools. It was made as a rig-based animation program first with 3D integration second and lite FBF animation third.
    Now that version 13 came out, it has more features geared towards frame by frame animation, which was somewhat haphazard in version 12 but now offers a serious alternative to the competitors.
    I haven't used ToonBoom myself, but judging by what it has to offer, Moho seems to be a great value for what you pay for. Of course to get the best out of its features it requires a lot of experimenting, but it's definitely worth it.

If you already have a powerful procesor, it should be no issue. I don't know if Toon Boom does the same thing or it uses GPU for rendering, but it's worth considering. Hopefully future updates will remove the core limit or better yet allow you to use GPU for rendering.

    Here's a few more that I'd like to bring up, though they're more 3D animation. However, since you brought up Blender, I'd thought I'd mention them.
    Muvizu - by far the easiest to learn of the three I'm going to mention and (unfortunately) the only one of the three that I've actually created something in. Originally produced by a UK based company (I believe). A couple of years ago, they were bought out by a Chinese company which had some issues in the beginning. However, it seems like they're finally back on track and will hopefully have additional assets for purchase in the near future. The base program is free, and the pro version isn't that expensive (under $100US) If I remember correctly, you should be able to import assets from Sketchup, though I think you need a conversion app for that.
    Daz 3D - one of those "razor and blades" programs that is similar to Blender, but not as steep a learning curve. The base program is free and if you're pretty self sufficient plus a bit handy in 3D building, you should be able to create something really cheaply. They do have assets you can purchase from other users and it looks like it "plays nice" with Poser assets. Speaking of....
    Poser - more of a 3D building program, you can animate in it, as well. It's also from the same company that makes Moho that you mentioned in the video. Not really that expensive and learning curve is probably a bit more than Daz 3D.

I'm already kind of familiar with Blender, but mostly just the 2.7 version. I haven't updated yet in fear it will wonk up my 3d models I have in there. But they're a sacrifice I'm willing to make if it means grease pencil is worth it, because making 2d animation is my top priority over my video game models any day. I'm looking for something that can do vector lines or rigging puppets, which I know blender can do.

    I will argue that there are no better software unless the artist is not good at animation. If you're good at animation, any of the software mentioned here is as good as paper, cel, and scanner. These softwares enhances and sped up the workflow not make an animator better. Keep in mind when purchasing that the more expensive it cost doesn't mean the more it benefits you. So far, I've done my animation recently on Clip Studio Paint EX but I did own TVPaint and Toonboom including the new Moho but since I do illustration a lot and digital painting, Clip having the animation already set up is always my way to go and what I think sped my work flow.
    A free software is enough for a newbie animator or even expert a like as long as they know what they're doing. None of these softwares make you a better animator in the end, it's up to the artist.

    Don't be ashamed to pirate these softwares if you are learning/studing, you shouldn't need to pay 2k dolars a year for digital tools that won't make u money in return

    I concur with your software listings. I'd say, whether you're new or a more veteran animator..don't let yourself be intimidated by price tags as they don't really mean it fills the needs for whatever project you may be working on. I'd highly recommend getting your hands wet with them all if you can. This will help you understand them better and allow you to diversify your portfolio which in turn makes you more employable. Even if your samples are only personal projects and not work experience in said industry.

      Completely agree! Also if you’re just interested in working on your own stuff you don’t need the most expensive software out there - as long as it’s got all the features you need you can make whatever you like!

    There is also Plastic Animation Paper, which is just called Animation Paper nowadays. PAP 4.0 was free last I checked, if anyone wants to try that out. It is especially good for people who want more traditional hand-drawn process.

      @@kdsketch I originally use Blender for 3D stuff.2D animation came out with 2.8 release and I tried to use it. It was really quick to understand because the brushes and colors work exactly the way like the materials used for 3d animation. A nice gate for a 3d artist who just moved to 2d.

    Synfig is another free option. It's like Moho - completely vector based and reliant on rigging - however I don't personally find it very intuitive, and it crashed quite a lot when I last used it, though that was many years ago.
    It's development team are very active and make big, new changes quite often.

    For people interested Clip Studio: The company likes to put their programs on sale a lot. Which is a good thing. I've seen Clip Studio Paint EX go as low as $79 USD. Which is when I got it. It's totally worth it. The animation feature is a bit confusing to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine :)

    I think animation can look good in any software. While hand-drawn is my favourite, Flash or rigged animation has proven to look great in shows such as Friendship is Magic and Gumball. It all just depends on skill. That's what makes animation a beautiful medium for storytelling.

    I am and have been a TVPaint user. In defense of TVPaint, it is considered expensive, but what makes it different than and far superior to the others is there are no major version changes every six months or even year. TVPaint comes out with a new version years after the prior version’s release, although they do constantly update the version you own (free of charge) to improve its performance and features. Although TVPaint released TVPaint 11 in around 2015, it is STILL the most current version with incremental updates occurring in the intervening years. However, I’m still using TVPaint 10.5 with nothing lacking for what I do in animation.
    And no heinous subscription.
    THAT’s what makes TVPaint so extraordinary. There’s incredible value, as opposed to, say, Adobe’s ceaseless, customer-abusing treadmill and exhausting carrot chasing

    • @kdsketch
      @kdsketch  5 років тому

      You're preaching to the choir here haha, TVPaint 11 Pro is actually my main software and I love it to death. I cannot STAND subscription models and I hate the idea of paying for something that I need forever when I could just pay once and not have to worry about it after that! :D
