A great way to cure impulse buying is creating a wishlist and then waiting a few months. If you’ve forgotten about that item then it’s most likely not important enough to buy. If the need is still strong then that is your green light to say ok. Of course budget and funds also play a huge part of this as well :)

Exactly! That is my intention with the list and most of the time it works well! ☺

I stopped buying from Amazon about 3 years ago. I found that for about 95% of what i I used to buy on Amazon I can buy elsewhere, or in most cases I just didn’t really need that thing anyway! I think most of my Amazon shopping was wasteful impulse buying so it’s been a huge money saver.

I haven't bought anything from Amazon for about 5 years. I've been lucky in that I never needed anything that could only be bought from Amazon. I'm not a minimalist but watching your content and a couple of others like you helps me be more mindful about making purchases.

Glad I just found you and I subbed. I’m from Japan and used to live in Germany for six years but now I live in the US. It seemed easier to live more sustainably in Germany as lots of people there are conscious of saving the environment but seems harder here in the US as it is the society of hyper consumption. I’m also doing the low buy challenge this year and totally agree with your ethics.

Just a tip for cold feet on the floor at your future desk. I have no carpet and the parquet floors can be pretty cold in winter. So I just folded up an old, secondhand blanket and put it under my feet, like a small rug, and if it gets really cold, I just put another blanket on top of my feet, or put a hot water bottle down on the blanket and put my feet on top of it. The blanket can be easily picked up and shaken out each day to keep clean, and draped over the chair to keep things looking neat at the end of the day. Such a blanket is multi-purpose, easily washable, and you don't have to acquire a rug, which can be heavier and harder to keep clean.
Also, your audio is fine. :D

I also get cold feet at a desk so I've been using either a: 'foot cushion' ( a flattish cushion I don't mind putting on the floor) or a little cozy blanket to wrap my feet up in, in addition to Lambs wool slippers.

Oh, thank you for the suggestions! I tried the blanked and ut helps a but, but I need to try the cushion too ☺

Agree audio is fine. One of my favourite minimalism books is Francine Jay’s The Joy of Less. In it she talks about having module boxes, ie. An office box that you can pack all of your things in at the end of the day. So maybe instead of a desk you could get a ‘current projects’ module tub or basket that could sit in your living room to hold the things that live on your couch. Just a thought ☺️

Lia! What if instead of buying a desk, you make/build or trade/buy one of those craft type desks where you can close the cabinets above and keep things neat…or exposed, but organized?! For electronics, knitting, etc.? Something you love! is key and so wonderful to hear you say more and more. It would be awesome to see what you design. Maybe put one of your 30 plants on a shelf of it even!

Your audio is fine. I think I will have to implement a wish list. This is such a great idea. And like you said, if you have something on the list & in a few months you decide that you don't want or need it anymore, it's such a money saver & less clutter to manage. Excellent video.

Hi Lia! I appreciate your content and enjoyed knowing about your plans for 2022. I live in a small city but I have found also here some good thrift stores where I go when I need something. During the last 3 years I have changed some consumption habits and second hand clothes are a considerable part of that. I hope to keep that mindful lifestyle for the years to come!

Tbh I would get a secondhand real down jacket. It works like a charm, best clothing decision i made was to get a 750 rated down mountain hardware jacket from poshmark for 50$. Works for the coldest canada weather and fits under my waterproof shell!

I think a desk is a good idea as it is not always good even working from home that work spills into family time and space, it should be working from home rather than living at work. Sometimes you need downtime when your work is not even visible in the background

Thank you for your comment on the accessibility of thrifted clothes. I can hardly get any for may small frame so I opt to buy intentionally, something that will last, even if it means fast fashion brands. Also, audio is perfectly ok :)

I can recommend the Kobo Clara e-reader, as it takes a lot of different formats. I never buy books from Amazon, so I had to get one that uses different formats, like epub. Also, Amazon doesn't have a lot of titles in Danish.
But it is a really nice e-reader, and I have never missed the physical books, and will only buy them if pictures are an important part of the book.

If you really must have a wool blanket (and you must, they keep you warm, letting you turn down the heat) then you can source 5-7 pounds, that is, 4.5-7 kg of wool yarn. Color doesn’t matter, and none of it needs to match. If your yarn is thin, hold it double, and you’ll get a pretty tweed. You can knit in strips, or in one piece, just make it plain. That way, when you wash it and it shrinks, it won’t be disappointing. It might take a year to knit, but it could be very affordable.
As for Amazon? I can’t get rid of them, because my son uses my account. They also deliver my cat food. And, I already have one of their e-readers. I use it to hold my knitting patterns. It reduces my paper waste. I have to have writing paper, pens, and notebooks, to take notes at church. Or when I need to make a list. Or when I need to leave a note.
Minimalist living is possible, but, it needs to be personalized. I promise, if I have an inch of storage space, it’s not my space anymore. My son discovered my trunk was empty. It’s now storing a spare tire and tools. My grand baby doesn’t live with me, but there’s a space which stores toys and special food. And there is no measuring tape, coffee cup or ball of mine which is a private possession. Not even my truck is mine; it will be put to work as necessary, irrespective of what I think, because there is no need to buy what can be borrowed.

I have a Kobo Clara e-reader that I've been very happy with. Bought this brand because I also don't want to support Amazon. Mine even has a light integrated where you can control the amount of blue and yellow light you get. The battery lasts forever etc etc... Would definitely recommend it!

These are really good goals! I'm trying to spend less too, I'm not completely minimalist but I try not to buy stuff that I just want. I really only buy food, groceries, etc. And I recently completely cut meat out of my life. I always agree with a lot of your points! I have a lot of privilege being skinny because I can easily find tons of secondhand stuff. A lot of people don't recognize their privileges so it's important to talk about.
I never get new tech for the heck of it either, I don't get it. I didn't get a new phone or laptop until they were not working anymore because there's no reason for it. My tv was given to me by my parents and I don't intend on buying a new one because it works fine, I don't need a bigger screen or whatever. Idk why everyone doesn't think like that. Not to mention it's terrible for the environment.
    Btw you're so pretty :)

I have so many mixed feelings about Amazon. I live in a big city as well, but when I buy something, its often very specific and sometimes too specific for a store to have. I am registered at so many different online shops now (e.g. two for crafting materials, two for spices and tea...) and its always a hustle to shop for things. I really try to avoid Amazon, but sometimes its the only solution for me to guaranteed get something.

Down puffer jacket is on my wishlist for the next years to come. In 2022 for the first time in 20 years of minimalism or at least intencionaly, i decided it is a no buy year for me except for good food ( new vegan here), doctors and related itens/ services ( i am sick for a year now). Last christmas i first shopped at mom's wardrobe ( she has a lot, mainly drifted but good condition clothes and help her declutter too), anything that breaks in my minimalist house, i am sure mom has a ton too. That's my goal this year: my expenses will go to mainly my health, my priority. Thanks lia for this vídeo! 😘❤

If you are vegan, consider something other than down. There are good performance synthetics. If you must have down, look for second hand. Down comes from tortured animals.

Hey! I need some advise of all these minamalists reading this comment :) So, I have about 15 T-shirts, but my four favorites would definitely be enough. What should I do with the rest??? They are in a good shape and I actually more or less like them, so I do not want to throw/give them away. That would also mean that I would have to buy new ones if one of them breaks, which I also would not want to. Still I want to have a smaller wardrobe! So: what would you do in my situation? (I don't know if putting them in the basement is a good idea, they might get moldy and stinky.) Thanks for your thoughts! Nelli

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  2 роки тому +9

I totally get your dilemma! I still think putting them away would be a good idea, just maybe not in the basement. Do you have the space to put a box somewhere? Similar to a "capsule wardrobe" according to project 333 where you have everything in storage except for 33 items you use for 90 days and then you can switch it up ☺ because I absolutely agree that you shouldn't get rid of them if you still like them and want to wear them when one of your favorite shirts are worn out and ut us also a lot more sustainable. I hope you find a good solution!

Maybe you can move them to a different drawer in a dresser? Like keep one section of your wardrobe or dresser for the things you are wanting to wear right now and move the ones for later to the bottom drawer

In my personal opinion it is not minimalist to get rid of perfectly functional things that you like and use, just to "be a minimalist". Are there reasons aside from this that you want to not have these things?
