I am not into extreme minimalism but what I like to do is just to get rid of what I don't find useful or enjoy anymore. I feel like aiming for "enough" is a great lifestyle !

I love your hair as it is now. I think you're attitude to minimalism is more balanced now and balance is a good thing, I think.

So glad you are happy and finding a healthy balance for yourself! I love the idea to focus less on stuff rather than on less stuff.

Thank you! And yes absolutely! I think focusing on stuff might be necessary in the decluttering process but at some point that needs to stop again ☺️

Everyone's balance is different. I have decluttered box loads, but still enjoy seasonal decorations and displaying items items passed down from family members, our history. I am more mindful of what I bring home and the time it will take to manage it. So less stuff comes home now. Paper clutter never ends. Soon as it's cleared out, the mail comes! You have found a balance that makes you happy, no explanation needed! Your hair looks cute either way. Thanks for your video.

Like you, I had an extreme minimalist phase and now have allowed a few more things into my life. Extreme minimalism suited me at the time (I was working overseas). But I also think for me it helped to go through a period of extreme minimalism to be fully intentional about what things to have now.

This is what changed in my life this year. Realising that I don’t need to part ways with all my things and that it’s ok to enjoy the things I have enough of. I don’t like to have too much as it makes me feel overwhelmed. I relate to this video so much.

I really love the thoughts you share in this video!! I especially love that you say that sometimes the pursuit of extreme minimalism is really a pursuit of absolute control over our physical surroundings/possessions. After reading Goodbye Things, I became overwhelmed with a desire for the life the author claims to have - absolute ease and simplicity. As a stay at home mother who helps run a baking business out of our kitchen, and who teaches my children at home, I *need* far more items than a single, childless Japanese man whose work is contained entirely in his laptop. Longing for the simplicity of his extreme minimalist life was actually just causing me to be discontent in my own life. Contentment, not a restless desire for someone else's "ideal" life, should be the goal of minimalism.

Focusing less on stuff instead of focusing on less stuff is really a great quote! Thank you for the inspiration and the video 🌸

Sounds like you have found a healthy balance. For me the focus is more on not bringing more stuff in, rather than decluttering. Of course I try to get rid of what is absolutely not being used and that are not needed, but I really do not have much energy for always decluttering.

One thing that gave me such a negative view of minimalism a few years ago was some extreme minimalist who said "why turn your home into a warehouse/storage unit for things when you have a storage unit easily accesible called the supermarket"(or something along those lines i don't remember the specific wording). It felt so wasteful and privileged - he was saying to not keep anything that you could buy again if you needed it again.. I feel like a lot (obvi not all) extreme minimalists are either travelling (with the specific lifestyle that entails) and a lot of other are doing this thing where THEY don't want to deal with stuff so they let other people deal with their stuff for them (by dumping it all in a thrift store with no regard to if the item is valuable to someone else, and/or by having enough money that they can treat things (like, extra plates and cutlery set for guests, a kitchen appliance, a tool, a hobby item) like single use purchases - buy, use declutter, buy again, use, declutter again. I have way to much stuff to be a minimalist, only I only ever byt thing second hand and also, I'm letting the stuff I don't use leave my life, but it's a verrrry slow procces, to make sure it all goes to a place where it will be used. And I do keep some things for future me, which isn't minimalist but at least that way I can be sure it won't go to waste because I know I will use it!

I see minimalism as a stepping stone to intentionalism. Living my ideal life consciously is my end goal, and minimalism is helping me get there by allowing me to reduce things that don’t contribute to my happiness in a way I’ve decided is important to me 😊

We always need one thing or another. Trying to have less can be stressful in itself when everything you see becomes a threat to your ideal of a space devoid of objects.

I've not commented before but I wanted to answer your question so here goes. I do consider myself to be a minimalist and I define it with a phrase that I believe I picked up in one of your earlier videos: 'Living intentionally with less'. I have found there are real benefits to owning fewer things and overall simplifying life. For me the most important benefits are ecological, mental health & economical. I also enjoy minimalist aesthetics (more traditional Japanese than the stark black and white look however). For me minimalism is a helpful way of living but not the reason for living.

I know what you mean. I cut my hair quite short a while ago and it's so comfortable and convenient, I can't go back to long. I've even received compliments from people who advised me not to lol. It's also made the tonal and textural transition a lot easier as my hair bypasses the gray phase entirely and grows in gold and white. Your haircutting video was actually the inspiration, so I'm partial. 🙂

I think there's minimalism which is a specific concept and then theres intentional living which is also a specific concept. Sometimes the two concepts can be blended but you can be an absolute maximalist and still do it intentionally and mindfully but then you wouldn't also be a minimalist

I think your super short hair is brave and beautiful! I look very maculine but i wish i had guts to do it. Its been over 7 years on my decluttering journey. I had a 4 bedroom home and 5 children and stuff. Slowly but surely, I will reach my goal but just so some people know, its an emotional journey that takes time for many. You might hold on to stuff bc of not having enough, not being paid attention to, shopping addiction, etc. While people declutter, heal yourself and think about why you have so much stuff, and can you be free of your stuff to make your life easier. I know...I can. Enjoy your journey friends. I live your videos. It's food for thought. I love your lifestyle. ✌️take care.

People change. What's good in summer won't work in winter, what worked last year might not work this year. Minimalism that just focusses on getting rid of as much stuff as possible (esp. in a very thoughtless way) is useless.

Lia, I’m still trying to make inroads. It seems an unreachable goal. What you are saying makes a lot of sense. I still need to declutter first. And that is an uphill battle. I fear I have shown my youngest daughter (19) how to live a cluttered life.

Hi Lia, your hair looks nice either way but I understand why you may want to cut it shorter again. I had long hair for most of my life and I always found it annoying and time consuming to care for it but I was scared to cut it because after a while long hair became my identity and I was scared of people’s judgements. For some reason people connect long hair with femininity so if you cut it they become threatened by you. Now that I’m older, I connect short hair with female liberation. It’s easy, it’s low maintenance and it’s beautiful. If I had my life over, I would never have long hair, so that’s my two cents! 🌹

i think minimalism is a slice of *intentional living*... all these other "minimalisms" you discuss are just a part of living intentionally.
you should do YOU FIRST, but since you asked... i love to watch your hair grow out. i'd like to see you make it to a bob-length & then buzz it again?

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  2 роки тому +2

Yes, I agree! Minimalism can be a helpful part of living intentionally. And you have absolutely described my hair plan 😉 that is at least what I would lile to do now but I think it will be another year until I have tried out the bob length and we will see if I still want to cut it then ☺️
