Really took me back worked on Wakefield market late 70's early 80's great times,in my opinion they ripped the heart out of Wakefield when they pulled the market hall and outside market down..time spent waiting under the bus station clock all nervous...such good memories,, a little sad though..many thanks..
Wonderful. My father's maternal great grandparents were from Wakefield. They immigrated to the US in 1887. It's nice to see where part of me is from. Thank you so much for this.
The omnia website suggests the chemist is on Westgate, and it looks to be what is now Icon bar (formerly Flares nightclub) between Natwest and Hoffmans butchers. The tunnel on the right could be the cut through to Barstow Square. The window layout on the first floor looks like it has changed (possibly done when the shop frontage was updated) but the architecture looks very similar. Visit omnia.ie website and search "chemist shop", relevant entry is about halfway down the first results page.
the arch with the chemist is next to the Elephant and castle, the hospital is still part of pinderfields, only part not to be knocked down, used as teaching hospital now
The name of the road in the pic of Newmillerdam is Barnsley Rd, not Wakefield Rd. The hospital is possibly either Manygates or Ackton Hall. Great pics. Thanks fpr sharing.
My husbands Great Aunt Maria Jaques married Charles Salmon and ran The Old Ship Inn and Hotel, and the Bull Hotel, would love a copy of the Old Ship postcard, any ideas where we can get a copy?
Yes, I recognise that too, spent many hours up and down that road, know it as 'New Scarborough', Darnley Fisheries, opposite Rufford Street, on right hand side leading to Darnley Estate. Great photos, thank you for the trips down memory lane.
Our history, culture and heritage are here in these photos, lets hope those lunatics do not arrive to pull "any offending " item down !!! how times have changed !
