I often criticize Apple but I have to admit that this piece hardware is quite nice. A similar display costs 2500,~, this is a complete machine with a display selling for 2600,~.
I hate when they use laptop graphics in the desktops though, Radeon 290M = 7870 or 270X and this is a weak hardware for 4K gaming, it's like you buy mostly a display. I can build a great gaming PC with FullHD for that price.
***** You _do_ know that Apple doesn't actually manufacture displays / panels, right? IPS is property of (is owned by) LG Electronics. Apple buys these displays from LG and installs them into their chassis.
Edison electricity ( not exactly) Tesla WiFi IBM hard drive Intel amd x86 Etc So basically iMac has 100s of inventions inside it so if you want one company to invent them all. Am sorry
I wonder if its possible to install a newer(2017) Logic Board with a better GPU,CPU and faster USB Ports into my late 2015 iMac 5k. I mean, to buy one costs around 500$, why not to swap it out and sell the 2015 Board. The Upgrade to a newer GPU and newer System (USB-C, RAM, CPU) may worth the 500$. After all one could sell the old Logic Board and gain some money back - don´t you think it is a good deal? After the Upgrade I could finally use the TB3 for eGPUs and all other Benefits of the newer iMac Board. I know, I would have to deal with the Ports and do some work on the Body of the Mac, but if this is the only problem, then I think it is manageble. What I really do not know is wether the 2017 Board will fit in the 2015 Body or not, and wether the power supply is the same or not. Thank you for Answers, I hope there will be some.
***** hm, I haven't noticed such an effect with my monitors so far. Even with 10 year old ones everything is fine. But I don't use macs. Can't say anything about them
I've watched and heard that iMac with Retina 5K display is very good for 4k video editing. Can this iMac with Retina 5K display good enough for 4k 3D video or film editing for serious business?
It's an awesome looking device but I just can't go back to a desktop computer, I love a portable device like a laptop. It looks to me that people buy these iMacs just so they can show them off in their living rooms.
SxC KrYpT0nItE Really? So... why do they still always bash on Apple for poor repair-ability? I think Apple buying iFixit may have been an April Fool's joke.
How many RAM slots does the 27 inch 5K iMac have? Does it have the same amount of slots regardless of how much RAM you get at the time of purchase? I ask because when I was going through the RAM upgrade prices, I noticed that Apple uses four modules if you choose 32 gigabytes of RAM and it’ll only use two modules if you go with either 8 or 16 gigabytes of RAM. I’m not sure if they’re just being conservative about the amount of RAM modules to make upgrades a little easier and less expensive for users or if they’re limiting the amount of RAM slots to people who choose either 8 or 16 gigabytes of RAM to keep them from upgrading.
NO, and even if it was, it would not make it "run faster". DDR4 is on a completely different chipset and is not interchangeable with DDR3. Also at this time DDR4 has little to no improvement over DDR3 in MOST applications. (but DDR4 is still very young in it's life cycle and will improve in time)
No. The iMac 5k 2014 model has an i5-4690 chip, which fits in an LGA-1150 socket, but the i7-5930k is an LGA-2011-v3 chip. They literally don't fit the same socket
Question! I got it with a 256GB SSD, I'd like to upgrade that myself to a 2TB SSD. How many components do I have to remove to take out the old SSD and replace it (or can I just add the 2TB SSD as an extra an in there somewhere)?
My SSD conked out, yes it's 2020, maybe I should get a new mac. Even the pros were clueless and could not help me find a replacement for SSD for the fusion drive. One person even told me it was soldered. Yes I know it's cheaper to just change the regular HD to an SSD. But I'm OCD and I wanted to fix it the way it was. It is is this video from 2014 that finally told me that they used the same freakin SSD as the Late 2013 MacBook Pro. They didn't do this in any iMac before or after this model. I feel like I won the Apple FU lottery.
Linus bought one with only a PCI SSD. The power lead is proprietary and isn't included if you don't order it with a drive that needs it. If you get one with a hybrid drive you can add a PCI SSD and change out the Hybrid to any standard sata drive.
Hey! This Summer i buy a New 2017 5K with i5 7600k. So, The New Intel CPU 8700K is Available Now! i just want know can i replace the new i7 cpu to my 7600k? it's Upgradable? Thank You So Much
***** Knock yourself out then. You can be the first one on the block with your 8k TV. Maybe some day the rest of us will catch up with you. 1080P is just for me for me, plus prices are dropping quite a bit.
Rick Geller I'm actually right there with you. Even IF I could afford Quadros, I can't justify them. 8K is useless on even a prosumer level. Unless want to project a crystal clear image on the moon, I can't think of a single use for 8k video. Hell, even on an iMax screen, it's a waste of resolution.
if you pay 150-250$ more (don't remember the actual price) you get a better gpu with 4GB Vram and even if I don't know its specs, it's fast up to 3.5 Teraflops
Sorry to burst your bubble but dell created the first 5k display and it costs as much at the 5k imac but apple did reach a first with a computer with a built in 5k displays

This is truly a work of art.

John Smith well... the mac wasn't built for gaming... here you have a great machine for working in 4k Video-editing, Photographing, and so on.
***** You _do_ know that Apple doesn't actually manufacture displays / panels, right?

There is only a handful of firms which build panels, so it's not surprising.
The US not switching their number measurements and units system is like Australia not upgrading their internet.

Does the cpu throttle down in that little oven?
Thanks! You all rock!
Removing the slim iMac display is a pain in the ass. Won't do it again.
Thank you Gwendolyn, this video is really neat and perfect. Simple too.

Wow, user serviceable RAM. So innovative, thank you Apple.
+s0nnyburnett It's better than in their macbooks and macbook airs, which are incredibly difficult to upgrade anything on.
The 21.5 inch iMac doesn’t seem to have user-replaceable RAM and CPU.
Los de IFixit ya desmontaron el nuevo iMac Retina 5K
I really think the retina iMac is an awesome deal
especially for photographers. That display ist just WOW!!! 5K!!! o,.O

Apple bought iFixIt.

You can purchase an iMac with Retina display today.

You can order one, but isn't there a waiting period of a few days usually?
PTNLemay Don't believe me? Google it. And many people already have their iMac with Retina 5K display.

can you please teardown the new mac mini ?
I heard these get super hot and slow after a while
What about stand?
IMac 5K is 5 years old, Holy Fuck!
I'm not a fan of all-in-one type computers, but I could make an exception for this iMac if there was a way connect the display to another computer. :)
If I upgrade my Fusion drive to an SSD, will I have to take out the PCIEE SSD out as well? This video shows it being separate pieces.
Hm... they should have integrated a port for the harddrive too!
Can we use DDR4 SDRAM instead of DDR3 SDRAM for this 2014 27" iMac 5k Retina Display to run it faster?
NO, and even if it was, it would not make it "run faster".
DDR4 is on a completely different chipset and is not interchangeable with DDR3. Also at this time DDR4 has little to no improvement over DDR3 in MOST applications. (but DDR4 is still very young in it's life cycle and will improve in time)
Nice video. Thanks for using the metric system. :)
Haha! My answer was right! It was 5!
Also- do you know if the 2014 iMac will be able to handle an i7-5930K 6-core chip?
No. The iMac 5k 2014 model has an i5-4690 chip, which fits in an LGA-1150 socket, but the i7-5930k is an LGA-2011-v3 chip. They literally don't fit the same socket
is it possible to put a retina display from this model into the previous model ? or is the connection different ?
+Lorenzo Kirk totally different, this thing had to have a bunch of custom parts to make the 5K resolution work at all.
Can you upgrade the video card yourself? Like you can with the CPU? :-)

I like how we're talking 5k pixel displays and consoles still cant even manage 1080p Graphics at 60 fps...
can i ask?
i see 128gb flash drive along side the seagate hdd.
does that mean, if i purchase the 1tb flash drive, can i install the sdd myself?
They could put a 2 graphics in there
really gr8 diaplay
+macsigo pretty much the best on the market, even now.
Pretty cool video.
Talented host
is it a 3,5 hdd in the 2014 27‘ 5k imac?
good luck see you next time !
5x 1920x1080!
I thought the panel was TFT?
Isn't TFT really old tech?
IPS is far superior
Yes, it is a TFT display with IPS.
Correct. It is a thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (LCD TFT) with in-plane-switching (IPS).
I don't think that you can upgrade the hard drive because Linus from LinusTechTips tried to replace it but he couldn't
Linus bought one with only a PCI SSD. The power lead is proprietary and isn't included if you don't order it with a drive that needs it.
If you get one with a hybrid drive you can add a PCI SSD and change out the Hybrid to any standard sata drive.

not a chance. the newer generation uses a different chipset.
What is the pixel density? ppi?
www.macworld.com/article/2835032/apple-crowns-imac-line-with-27-inch-retina-5k-display.html 217 according to Macworld.
podboq2 it has a better ppi than first generation ipad and ipad mini
see this dpi.lv/
Hi guys
Can someone confirm if original i5 4590 from mid 2015 imac 5k can be upgrade with i7 4790k ?
Thanks
the 5k screen really isn't all that impressive. it's hard to see a difference in most uses and for some reason UA-cam 5k videos will never play v
Fields Carlisle It's not meant for that
1 dislike from Apple XD
ill so dimms!
How heavy is this iMac?
What's 9+10?
21!
I like your smile! :)
so what apple make? design and software ? all inside are not apple , and why is so expesive?
5k? why not 8k LG already did one
No PC graphics card can run 8K resolution.

Throw a few Quadros at it, 8K will run.

Technically, iMax could handle 8K. It wouldn't be very useful, but it could do it.
Only 2 GB of RAM on the GPU? That doesn't seem like enough...
if you pay 150-250$ more (don't remember the actual price) you get a better gpu with 4GB Vram and even if I don't know its specs, it's fast up to 3.5 Teraflops
so fast
