I often sing this song live at my gigs and use to sing it for hours when I was lonely and busking my way around the world, always made me feel heaps better. JR is a great inspiration as a song writer to me, I often get compared to the Violent femmes, but I always let people know that JR came first and was probably a big inspiration to them as well. I appreciate it aint every ones flavour but I Love this stuff so much, even better live and solo with an acoustic guitar!
All well and good, until your dog companion of many years suddenly passes away, and the pain cuts just as deep. Then you are left alone with yourself, continually questioning how you let your best friend down like that, when they were counting on you to help them.

I love this version
I first heard this song while perusing CDs at a music store back in 2008 and remember asking the employee "who is this playing?"
Quite plausibly, the high point of human achievement in any field.
