I was born in 79 so I have the same opinion but about the 80s instead. Kids born in 89 would say it about the 90s. Which I still can understand. Not tons of Internet in the all of the 90s. Kids born in 99 probably say it about the 00s because it was pre huge social media. But that's really a stretch imo
God I love discovering bands and music that has been around forever that I have never come across before....Sorry I'm late to the party but better late than never!
This song is as relevant in August 2020 as ever. Maybe even more so than when it was recorded. Prophetic! The images of the Statue of Liberty and the Twin Towers are chilling! "Bye bye old world"....
The guitar and organ duet - it conjures images of undersea or outer space creatures in a kind of dance, investigating each other, then flying off on their respective courses. Beautiful. Jerry was and is a musical genius. thanks!
Well the old world may be dead Our parents can't understand But I still love my parents And I still love the old world Oh, I had a New York girlfriend And she couldn't understand how I could Still love my parents and still love the old world So I told her: I want to keep my place in the old world Keep my place in the arcane Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world Alright I say old world I say old world I say Well I see a '50's apartment house Bleak in the morning sun But I still love the '50's And I still love the old world I wanna keep my place in the old world Keep my place in the arcane Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world Alright I see the '50's apartment house It's bleak in the 1970's sun But I still love the '50's And I still love the old world I wanna keep my place in this old world Keep my place in the arcane knowledge And I still love the '50's and I still love the old world Alright now we say bye bye old world Gotta help the new world Oh bye bye I say bye bye bye bye old world
Used to listen to this alot when I worked in a record store in the '70s. Those '70s apartment houses are now getting on 50 years old. That's a lot older than those '50s apartment houses lookin' bleak in his 1970s sun. How time passes ...
I broke my foot or something similar falling off a sidewalk on Wall Street but managed to get back to my hotel with a stop for a salted brownie and tea on the way after seeing a golden retriever and a teenage Jonathan Richman - not together - lookalike and no doubt others along the way. And in fact went into the Trump Building and Tiffany's shortly after so the pain kicked in later.
Cómo me pasan de vueltas los Modern Lovers, esa conjunción del teclado con la viola es una completa delicia. Qué increíble música car4jo! Saludos desde Lima, Perú.
I found this song due to an Erasmus English Language Assessment that had in its reading section a part from an article written by Guardian Cheers to you who made that choice
I LOVE THIS SONG. 40 years older and 40 times better than that video all of us had to watch last year, so I'll take being the 457th over the billionth. That part here at 2:00 - really starting at 2:04 is always stuck in my head. Not in an aggravating sense either, even whistling it when I'm in an alright mood.
Brilliant Song and performing, that voice ! so cool, the images are terrific, very well done ! i’m’a bit of a New Yorker myself…….lol……..i live in NYer 6630 France, 50 inhabitants !
I don't know whether the rock enthusiasts are executing on his behalf but 'Pablo Picasso's' glue - a coincidental look alike - has lasted a long time even if the window is fixed. I don't know if that's why I had trouble opening one eye but it's open now.
I first went to New York in 1965 according to a passport but have no memory of it. After that I didn't visit until 1977. I have travelled now to New York 15 times from the UK, 17 times if you include returning to the UK for Christmas.
I was in New York November - April and then three weeks in Newark in April but unfortunately it seems like a distant memory now. I don't mean it is a blur but that it seems like a long time ago.
If Jonathan Richman had seen any of my videos - the actual tapes now missing although I have them on the computer - he might think I was a young pretender although I have no musical accompaniment. I know for a fact that the cat that posed in a video I took in New York a few years ago now knew about Richman's video.
My thoughts exactly. This band was from Boston and made the city a point of reference in many of their songs; using clips from NYC is ripping off the ML vibe.
I still love my parents, and I still live the old world. More resonant with each passing year. I miss my grandparents who were the okd world for me.
He talks about his love for the 50's. I miss the 70's. The last truly free time for children.
💯

Thanks for this great comment haha
Reminds me of The Doors
it really hits like Velvet Underground's Sister Ray but less chaotic
Well the old world may be dead
Our parents can't understand
But I still love my parents
And I still love the old world
Oh, I had a New York girlfriend
And she couldn't understand how I could
Still love my parents and still love the old world
So I told her:
I want to keep my place in the old world
Keep my place in the arcane
Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world
Alright
I say old world
I say old world
I say
Well I see a '50's apartment house
Bleak in the morning sun
But I still love the '50's
And I still love the old world
I wanna keep my place in the old world
Keep my place in the arcane
Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world
Alright
I see the '50's apartment house
It's bleak in the 1970's sun
But I still love the '50's
And I still love the old world
I wanna keep my place in this old world
Keep my place in the arcane knowledge
And I still love the '50's and I still love the old world
Alright now we say bye bye old world
Gotta help the new world
Oh bye bye
I say bye bye bye bye old world
1st 2 verses, it's
"Keep my place in the arcane design"
I read that somewhere a long time ago. It always puzzled me when I heard it.
Used to listen to this alot when I worked in a record store in the '70s.

It just dawned on me how much this sounds like the Velvet Underground 🚇

because it is deceptively simple...yet so catching :-)
"i had a New York girlfriend.." works for me.

It's an excellent video. I'm sorry to have commented on myself in the earlier comment but I am under constant pressure as a 'disease denier'.
nice ..somehow reminded dire straits -sultans of swing and rolling stones mixed vibe..

2:30 so goood
Groovy. Thanks for the upload.
I made a video in 2016 without having remembered it if I had seen it, but the cat in my video would have known of the film.
my favorite Richman track
One person doesn't like this. Sad face :(
Oh my sweet lord almighty
4 folk don't like the old word; classic.
Horn & Hardhart! Schrafft's in Boston!
2:02 best part.
Where in Ohio was the first scene shot? I recognize the SOHIO Gas station!
I think it's all filmed in Boston

Sorry I was posting a lot before finally being sectioned. Did jonathan richman also do the videos?
This film is where all the El footage is from. Nice job btw, ua-cam.com/video/XEG4re43ub8/v-deo.html
