not really, JR was just in a weird position early on in his career, he was kind of like the first "nice guy" an incredibly emotional teenager who was infatuated with rock & roll, pop music, art, the modern world and romance films; he couldn't get into a relationship and didn't know why, he wrote a lot of harsh songs about it early on (hear these demos: ua-cam.com/video/ttQS4XnwbL4/v-deo.html) as time passed, he began to mature and his songs became harder to pin down to a true meaning, you couldn't tell if he was being ironic, sarcastic, satirizing or telling a sincere serious truth - this was much better as it created room for interpretation in his songs (i.e Hospital, Girlfriend, She Cracked & I'm Straight). JR grew out of this phase and in his words he abandoned the "bitterness and sadness" to create something truly unique, original, optimistic and beautiful through his music, he left the hard edge he had in the early '70s for the soft welcoming almost childlike sound of his later career. Still continuing to write and play love songs but now much different to how they were when he started, JR doesn't play songs like Hospital & Girlfriend anymore because apparently he's recognized that he isn't a kid anymore and no longer feels the sentiments expressed in that song.
