He just landed a job with the U.S. embassy as a speech writer for middle east diplomacy. And in all seriousness, I think he'll do a far better job than anyone else has in the past.
Neil: "The RRHOF isn't a big deal to us, but this audience of peers and fans and the great musicians who say they got their start after being inspired by Rush, ARE a big deal." The best part is his subtlety, such as saying indicted instead of inducted, which any Rush fan should know was not a mistake, as many in the audience apparently thought. Look it up, and use a real dictionary this time instead of the interwebs, just because Neil would be happy that you held some paper in your hand that you didn't use to wipe your butt. "Theirs is truly the praise of the praiseworthy." In other words, one need only look at some of the garbage you inducted before us to know what we really think of you. He also put a lot of stress on the fact that they had been a working band for 39 years, to clearly and succinctly state their qualifications. 'Nuff said. And, yes, he offered a sincere tribute to absent friends and family, as well as to all present. Class act that he is, he didn't leave anyone out, including the road crew and all of the behind-the-scenes crowd. Geddy: His version of "Blah blah" could have been, "The fans, the fans, fans and the fans, the fans the fans... THE FANS! (F___ you, RRHOF.)" Doesn't even mention, much less thank, the "dignitaries" who inducted them. Alex: With acknowledgement to the other great commenters and their synopsi, here's my take- "Here we are. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! They finally inducted us. We've been playing our asses off for years and just doing our thing, not really caring about accolades from two-bit institutions like the RRHOF and now, lo, and behold, they get around to letting us into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! Oh, lucky us! We're so honored. Really? Are you sure we're good enough? You didn't think so before. (RRHOF: Well, we didn't.) Why not? We met all of your qualifications: 25 years+ performing, huge fan base, millions of records sold, even some hits on the pop charts, and then some. (RRHOF: Yeah, but you just weren't OUR kind of a Rock and roll act.) Oh yeah? F___ YOU! Whatever. A long time ago we realized that we weren't your kind of thing, and as time went on it meant less to us and we just kept on doing our thing. Then one day... the phone rang. "Hello? What? NO! We're being inducted into the RRHOF? You're f'ing s'ing me! (Hangs up.) They want US in the RRHOF. Can you imagine that? We ARE their kind of thing (or our fans put so much freaking pressure on them that they were looking pretty stupid). (Gets all dressed up, goes to the ceremony and pulls out the requisite sappy speech.) (Sarcastically) We are so honored to be here. We want to thank a bunch of people. Especially these two guys! (Blubbering) I love you guys! It's just meant so much to me! Yeah, screw all that crap... Anyway, here we are. We did this thing. Seriously, though, I love these guys, I love this audience and I love our fans! Thank you! (X3) Dead on. Perfect. Not one blah too many.
John G Hey, some of them got pretty good at it. If I had owned a bass guitar instead of having to borrow one I might have actually learned to play back then.
Oh they do. They both give a speech trying not to be rude and Alex is all like "Fuck it. Imma just say blah." Of course they want to laugh and of course they wanna kill him.
Alex Lifeson is the best! The tools running the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are a bunch of self appointed elitist snobs. I think his message was hilarious and quite clear; the fans matter a hell of a lot more than the R&R HOF.
John Penza rush should have been in there a very long time ago . but the dickheads or the old guard could not accept that rush proved then wrong over and over . just could not stand that rush became so iconic and more to the point they did with absolutely no support or help from the rock media the rock media hates anyone they feel they did not have a hand in making . the same reason they hated zeppelin all through the 70s
One of the great things is that they seem to be really good guys, and they've remained friends for decades. They don't seem petty or backstabbing, just hardworking and unpretentious.
I love how at 3:41 when Geddy points at Alex, Alex just looks behind him...these guys are the best! So down to earth, real funny and without a doubt the greatest musicians of all time.
Alex did the whole "blah blah blah" thing as sort of an "i told you so" to all of the magazines and critics that said rush sucked and would go nowhere back in the 70's... not only did they prove them totally, and utterly wrong, but Alex just had to add one last little dig in there to really rub it in. Gotta love Rush haha
I think he did the "blah blah blah" thing cause he doesn't give a crap about being inducted into the hall of fame. Like, at all. 0.0000000001% of him might care, but probably not. In fact, definitely not. 0.0% of him cares.
I know there are people getting angry at Lifeson for that speech, thinking it goofy or disrespectful, but what he did was pretty amazing. He told a story with all those 'Blah Blah Blahs'. It was basically a history of the band, playing around the world and having major accomplishments, then after being eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not getting on the ballot. Yet more playing around the world and more accomplishments until they are finally voted into the Hall. He answered the phone and is informed of the good news, fancies himself up and writes a speech, which he produces and reads from. If you understand where it all came from, it makes it a little easier to stomach. Honestly, watch the speech again with the above in mind. I died laughing, as a RUSH fan, following along with his thought process. Simply brilliant, start to finish.
I can still remember the first time I set the needle down on 2112 vinyl and was taken into a different realm of rock & roll. Thank you so much to RUSH for being that part of my young life!
But still he thinks that a star is surrounded by a galaxy. Good thing he didn't become an astronomer. And WHAT is up with the nose?? Too much red wine? Anyway...big respect for the guy. One of rock's most brilliant drummers.
Neil looks like he was savoring that speech big time. I imagine he loved rubbing it in on those who kept Rush out of the Hall for so long. I also think his use of the word "indicted" wasn't an accident, that probably reflects how he really feels about the RRHOF.
I've been reading tons of comments in the last few days about Neil, and seeing This acceptance finally broke Me down..I had to pause it @ 3:14 . Neil You're a God! Thanks for all the inspiration since 1980
Rush's well-deserved nomination in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is proof that there is justice in the world. Rush has been such a huge influence in the lives of so many musicians, they have every right to be proud of this honor. Sweet vindication is yours Geddy, Alex and Neil!
Alex is a fuckin goofball and a amazing guitar player. Neil is not only an amazing, monster drummer but also a gentleman. Very rare in rock and roll. And Geddy is a multitalented musician. What is there more to ask.
Amazing how many in the comments completely miss Alex's speech. Hint: It tells the actual story of Rush being 'blacklisted' from the HoF to being inducted.
Right? You can actually understand what he's saying if you listen. It's a gigantic middle finger to the HoF and ends with a truly sincere thank you to his band, family, and fans.
Well done boys. Well deserved. The truth is, to each and every Rush fan, they have been Hall of Famers since we first heard their music! Thank you guys for the hours...and hours......and hours...........of musical JOY!!!!!!!
They are absolutely legendary. For Rush, it was always about the music. I adore them. How does a band stay together, so grounded, focusing on their craft for 40 years? They are awesome. Great guys, with great families, oh...and their wives are absolutely STUNNING!
Jaguar Black The band is literally called "Yes". They're a prog rock band from the 60's, on equal technical level as rush. Alex Lifeson is the embodiment of Progressive Rock's Hodor.
At least he's a good guitarist
@@liamfrazer4810 He's not good... he's FANTASTIC!
R.I.P. Neil Peart the G.O.A.T. among Drummers, your legacy and technical proficiency have and always will continue to inspire us all!!! Keep Pounding and ripping on the kit up there in heaven, smiling down on us!!!
He doesn't believe in heaven...js
Alex Lifeson- The acceptance speech by which all others shall henceforth be measured,... & found lacking! BRILLIANT!!
I wish Alex Lifeson made a speech at my ceremonies.
He just landed a job with the U.S. embassy as a speech writer for middle east diplomacy.
And in all seriousness, I think he'll do a far better job than anyone else has in the past.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 - I believe he spoke at my commencement! That was almost the exact same thing!
I could think of so many speeches that would have more meaning if Alex just said Blah.
Alex: With acknowledgement to the other great commenters and their synopsi, here's my take-
"Here we are. Thank you! (X3)
Dead on. Perfect. Not one blah too many.
David Polander PERFECT!!!✌💜
remember our fun little band in houghton that used to try to cover these guys ?
John G Hey, some of them got pretty good at it. If I had owned a bass guitar instead of having to borrow one I might have actually learned to play back then.
I'd say you are spot on.
DUDE! You speak fluent Blah-ese. That translation was spot-on!😎
Watching this and realizing I will never see them together again. Rest In Peace Neal thank you for changing how I listening to music.
I remember watching this as it happened. I saw that little grin at the beginning of Lifeson's speech and I thought "Oh god it's about to go down."
I came back here. To see the beauty of trio. Rush In Peart 😢🙇🏻
You will always be missed.
Whenever Alex gives a speech, my heart just melts.
Don't you just wanna give him a big squeezie ?
It's taken me this long to realize that this was one of Lerxst's best solos ever.
He is truly hilarious!!! I love his concert “rants;” one of my favorite ones concerns the “Meat Bees!”
While Alex is doing his thing, Neil and Geddy have these nervous smiles, like they want to laugh and kill him at the same time. :)
Oh they do. They both give a speech trying not to be rude and Alex is all like "Fuck it. Imma just say blah." Of course they want to laugh and of course they wanna kill him.
According to Lee, they wanted to kill him right there. That wasn't the speech he was supposed to deliver.
THE coolest induction speeches EVER.
God Bless Canadians.
Alex Lifeson is the best! The tools running the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are a bunch of self appointed elitist snobs. I think his message was hilarious and quite clear; the fans matter a hell of a lot more than the R&R HOF.
The only people he thanked were the fans, and that's as it should be.
I love how the audience seems to know exactly what Alex was talking about.
One of the great things is that they seem to be really good guys, and they've remained friends for decades. They don't seem petty or backstabbing, just hardworking and unpretentious.
Rest in peace 🙏💔 Neil Peart
I love how at 3:41 when Geddy points at Alex, Alex just looks behind him...these guys are the best! So down to earth, real funny and without a doubt the greatest musicians of all time.
RIP Neil. You wont be forgotten [*]
He did it because the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is bullshit.
diatras He did it because to make a mockery of this idiotic institution and have some the non rock people in it is BLAH!!!!
Dr Elvis Valentino And the fact that it took 25 plus years to be there and on the cover the Rolling Stone
Alex Lifeson is a mad genius.
Rest in Peace Neil Peart. I'm glad to say I have seen them 3 times.
Lifeson's speech articulated perfectly what the RR HoF is and will be. It deserved no more, no less.
My thoughts exactly
R.I.P. Neil Peart
What do you say to an institution that snubs you for over 30 years? I think Alex figured it out. ;)
heymisterderp blah blah blah
Original drummer still got snubbed.
@@casperguylkn He died 5 years earlier and only played on their first album.
they only "snubbed" them for 14yrs at that point.
you arent eligible until your around for 25yrs.
I can still remember the first time I set the needle down on 2112 vinyl and was taken into a different realm of rock & roll. Thank you so much to RUSH for being that part of my young life!
Neil has such a way with words. :)
And diction....
Daniel Hebner Words=diction.
Diction is more specifically choice of words used, generally speaking.
That man is smart as hell. He reads a ton that's one reason why
But still he thinks that a star is surrounded by a galaxy. Good thing he didn't become an astronomer.
And WHAT is up with the nose?? Too much red wine?
Anyway...big respect for the guy. One of rock's most brilliant drummers.
You can see Geddy and Neil trying not to laugh. They don't need vines and UA-cam when they have Alex in troll-mode
Alex in any mode. Alex is a constant goofball.
Neil looks like he was savoring that speech big time. I imagine he loved rubbing it in on those who kept Rush out of the Hall for so long. I also think his use of the word "indicted" wasn't an accident, that probably reflects how he really feels about the RRHOF.
+BestWayKilla "indicted: 2x was definitely
This speech never gets old. Rip Neil and thank you.👍
Alex LIfeson speech is so touching
Blah, blah blah blah!
But you understood every single blah's meaning perfectly well, did you not ?
Lifeson, Peart and Geddy. The only trio to become mainstream and remain obscure. May Neil Rest in Piece.
Alex Lifeson's speech the greatest ever in any awards ceremony! Genius!
Who's here because of Neil's passing?
Me too!I had to revisit this wonderful moment in tribute to Neil's tragic passing. The Professor has Exited Stage Left... RIP, Neil.😥
Neel Ghosh -- again...
NPR article on Neil Peart linked me to this.
RIP Neil Peart, the Professor.
I've been reading tons of comments in the last few days about Neil, and seeing This acceptance finally broke Me down..I had to pause it @ 3:14 . Neil You're a God! Thanks for all the inspiration since 1980
Needed to see it again. R.I.P. Professor. Still wish Chris Squire of YES would of made it to their long overdue induction.
Alex's speech just gets funnier and funnier everytime I watch it.
Rest in peace Neil peart 1952-2020
Rush's well-deserved nomination in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is proof that
there is justice in the world. Rush has been such a huge influence in the lives of
so many musicians, they have every right to be proud of this honor. Sweet vindication is yours Geddy, Alex and Neil!
Give the guitarist the award for the best R&R H.o.F. acceptance speech ever!
Rush’s history explained by Alex Lifeson is everything I’ve ever needed. The greatest speech ever.
Alex is a fuckin goofball and a amazing guitar player. Neil is not only an amazing, monster drummer but also a gentleman. Very rare in rock and roll. And Geddy is a multitalented musician. What is there more to ask.
He's a great actor.
Man... Tom Hanks is such a great drummer and good to see Harrison Ford still playing guitar.
Yeah, and then it hit me: WTF is my grandma doing with those guys?
Alex Lifeson = Greatest speech EVER.
ok, whos going to top that?
who?
when?
no one,...... ever
Aliens.
Rick Wakeman.
lol pretty sure Wakeman did when Yes got inducted
Greatest speech ever.
Well done boys. Well deserved. The truth is, to each and every Rush fan, they have been Hall of Famers since we first heard their music! Thank you guys for the hours...and hours......and hours...........of musical JOY!!!!!!!
Most meaningful induction speech EVER!
They are absolutely legendary. For Rush, it was always about the music. I adore them. How does a band stay together, so grounded, focusing on their craft for 40 years? They are awesome. Great guys, with great families, oh...and their wives are absolutely STUNNING!
There's no greater talent in a 3 member rock & roll band than RUSH and there will never be!!!!
They have more talent than some 4 person bands even or maybe even some 5
RoaringOceans
You got that right!!
Well... there is *one* band I would consider on equal grounds to them. Yes.
Burntshmallow
ok, who?
Jaguar Black The band is literally called "Yes". They're a prog rock band from the 60's, on equal technical level as rush. I know how crazy that sounds, but this is coming from someone who thinks Rush is literally one of the two most brilliant prog rock groups I have ever heard. The other of which, is "Yes"
Listen to Roundabout.
So proud to have named my son after Alex.
Rip Neil Peart 😭
I think that may have been the most hilariously creative acceptance speech ever.Alex could have been a successful comedian.I never knew that the guys in Rush were so cool.Hell I knew they could play, but I never really saw any interviews and such until recently.Yo Rush Superfan Steve S, from NePhilly ,Puppies Poodles and, Rush back in the 80's. Good Times they were fellas!
Rest in peace dear Neil... Thank you for inspiring!
As the band walks up to the stage... Front row, giving them humble praise : Chris Cornell. Legendary!!
Alex told the story of the Band. How they have met each other, the reharsals, the fisrt contract, the concerts and to finally get to where they are. Nice Alex!
That was the greatest 'Blah' performance in the universe, the balls of that guy, WOW!
Alex pretty much sums it up. Greatest hof speech I ever heard
RIP to the greatest Canadian rock drummer of all time!
Alex has such a wonderful way with words; his vocabulary is astonishing.
Rest in peace mister Peart.
Neils speech shows how much he used to read. Absolute respect for this man. I love him. I blame myself for not knowing him before. Genius.
