They mention in one of DT's docos that it was while waiting outside to see Rush on Power Windows tour that they came up with their original name, Majesty.
I truly respect John's humbleness. There have been so many people that have said over the years "DT is what Rush wished they could have been". This proves they actually have a respect for them and the fans are wrong.

Just about every album Rush did is essential listening, IMO. Power Windows, for me, is an absolute masterpiece. As for technical ability, I would say Peart matches Portney (and of course is far more of a drum God on account of influencing so many and doing it 20 years earlier!), and Geddy easily triumphs over Myung. Tonally I would say that Lee is one of the best sounding bass players ever. Seriously, how many Myung bass-lines do you remember? Geddy's bass-lines are some of the best ever recorded, by anyone, anywhere. Lifeson also has awesome tone and feel, and of course co-wrote all of Rush;s music. Whilst Petrucci has impeccable technique, I would far rather listen to Lifeson. I would also say that Lee's voice is far cooler and more characteristic than LaBrie's, even though he is not a singer first. Also, from the point of view of arrangements, it is not fair to compare a 5 piece band to a 3 piece band.

When I think of Rush , I think of everything I loved about Canada, and all those road trips we had with Dad. Best memories of my childhood ,including the music.
Geddy’s answer is both surprising (it’s actually more difficult to write that way) and an obvious reason why rush has stayed together in its current form for so many decades. What pulls bands apart at the seams is ego and resentment (john could probably tell a tale or two about that if he trusted you and you caught him in an honest mood). The fact that these guys can work together and only run with the ideas that truly work is musical perfection. It’s the fountain of musical youth that most bands never find.
Thank you Mr. Weinrib, for all the music in this 40 years! Please, extend my thanks to your friends Alex Živojinović Lifeson and Neil Peart. To my eternal happiness, I was able to assist them at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the most important musical experiences of my life. Thanks!
@davegto67 actually Eddie Van Halen knew exactly who Alex was. In fact, Eddie was once asked, in an interview, what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist. His response was, "ask Alex lifeson."
Petrucci - a master in his own right - has immense respect (and awe) for Geddy (Alex, Neil and Rush). Both guys have no explaining to do to anyone and yet they're both incredibly human. I gotta love that about both of them as people. The "musician" part speaks for itself.
It was great hosts and all I love you tube for bringing stuff like this as a musician its so awesome to hear what these masters think and how they write their music its amazing :-)
Never seen that before, and appreciate learning about their writing process. I do hope Geddy & Alex pursue the ides of having a fill in drummer, and tour again, that would be outstanding. RIP Neil, much ❤
How cool is it the amount of respect ✊ that Rush has within the band but also how cool is it when super musician and guitar God John P is so respectful and ask thoughtful meaningful questions
Rush and DT are two of 5 bands/artists (the others being Eric Johnson, mark tremonti (of creed/alter bridge fame) and journey) who have shaped me into the musician I am today. They're all my heroes and honest to god i feel johns sort of starstruck vibe he's got going on but it's awesome that he maintained his cool. It happened to me last year when I saw mark tremonti play a solo gig in Cleveland and i got to meet and chat with him without any meet and greet kinda thing and it was so difficult to maintain my cool. I went up to him and I'm like "mark! Awesome show man!" And we started talking about guitars and writing and wrestling but in the back of my mind I was going "holy shit....I am standing side by side talking with one of my heroes." I was shaking in my boots in the back of my mind and I'm sure that's how John petrucci was feeling haha. We're all human beings in the end. God bless geddy Lee and rush as well as John petrucci and Dream theater
RIP Neil "the professor" Peart! I have been a fan since the early 1980s and my first concert I attended was Rush! We will never see another Neil Peart again. I hope future generation will be educated and knowledgeable about Neil's enormous contribution to music history Not just drumming history, not just lyrical history, just music history period!!!
Rush should collectively write a survival manual for the 'rock n roll' lifestyle. All 3 of them are in their mid-60's and still talk and act with complete cognizance. On their first tour with Kiss Gene Simmons said he never saw any of them hanging out at the typical 'sex, drugs, and rock n roll' after parties. They were all quietly sitting in their hotel rooms reading books. (And this was the 70's!!!) I think a big part of it was all of them came from loving, supporting families that gave them their level heads. The temptations have taken out so many talented artists that fame and money allow within easy reach.
Damn.Feels so weird to see someone like Petrucci look up to and admire another musician and ask questions with enthusiasm.Great to see John mention Page as well.
I have no idea how everyone can be so calm with two of the greatest progressive musicians on the same stage. The utmost respect to Sir Getty Lee and Master Petrucci!
John Weisz The hosts are terrible. Eddie is a great radio personality but not cut out for TV...and his two sidekick stooges are worthless. No wonder the show got canned.
R40 was my favorite Rush tour. I had so many questions, although I appreciate the opening question. I hadn't given it a lot of thought until he asked it
Still a Rush freak since the late '70s. Love DT's music too. I remember sleeping outside in the cold on a lounge chair, in front of a Jamesway store, chomping at the bit waiting for the Ticketron inside to open to get our seats on the floor. Well worth the wait!
That is such a great question for John Petrucci to ask in order to really get behind the scenes on how Rush goes about song writing. It's also really wonderful to how how humble and accommodating Neil Peart was in the process of writing lyrics with Geddy.
It took me a couple days but UA-cam kept recommending me these Neil-related vids so i started watching tonight and went on this gentle youtube wormhole into these. I am discovering fun pairings like this one, Geddy as a great interviewee and Neil as a (very) well read guy who kept to himself. Didn't know Neil personally but i felt the loss like he was my uncle or something. Like family you never got to know. Hope his family finds peace.
Geddy Lee is my Bass Icon Who Got me into Bass Guitar And I love ❤️ Watching Geddy Lee of Rush including That Metal Show ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
That was hilarious! Knowing that it was spur of the moment makes it an even greater moment. Of all the interviews I've heard that was the most informative regarding the writing process between the three rock and roll gods. And it makes perfect sense considering their longevity.
Incredible that after nearly four decades since hearing Rush for the first time....and reading or seeing several interviews....I'm finally learning that the early days the songwriting was lyrics first!! Well!
John Petrucci is a monster player and he takes a back seat to nobody. Seeing him ask questions of someone he admires speaks to his genuine humility. Great guy.
Great show that you wish would never end. I had the honor of semi-meeting John P. one time behind the building they were playing downtown San Diego He was on the phone, as I noticed him from across the street. I walked over and gestured for him to sign something I had and shook his hand without saying a word. I didn't want to interrupt him by being star struck or a fanboy. I never know what to say to my musical hero's when I get the chance to meet them anyway so it was cool.

Thanks!
Fantastic! Will always be grateful for the fans all across Brazil!
Alex Lifesons solo on la villa is considered the greatest solo ever by many guitarists including Eddie Van Halen.
Alex's solo in LVS my favorite guitar solo, but I don't think EVH knows who Alex is. Not a slight on Eddie-
@davegto67 actually Eddie Van Halen knew exactly who Alex was.
Hemispheres has to be the best guitar album of Rush!
Never seen that before, and appreciate learning about their writing process. I do hope Geddy & Alex pursue the ides of having a fill in drummer, and tour again, that would be outstanding. RIP Neil, much ❤
John is so in awe of Geddy. The respect is amazing
Love every second of Geddy's responses... man that loves his band, and country
I just loved Lifeson’s speech. You gotta find it and hear it for yourself. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It's so great to hear musicians like Geddy create music professionally and with respect to Neil's songwriting.
"NO ego attached to these ideas". These words are priceless, ego is the main enemy in a band. Rest in peace Neil.
These 3 guys can easily be role models of everything they do. Individual as well as collective. Everything!
You can really tell who actually knows what they're talking about.

I love you rush fans.
You shouldn't text on your bike... :-D
We love you too,
John‘s first question was absolutely gold!
Damn.Feels so weird to see someone like Petrucci look up to and admire another musician and ask questions with enthusiasm.Great to see John mention Page as well.
Two of the most talented, genius, humble and idolized musician/songwriters to ever play their instruments conversing. Amazing.
I have no idea how everyone can be so calm with two of the greatest progressive musicians on the same stage. The utmost respect to Sir Getty Lee and Master Petrucci!
They should take the hosts right out of the equation and make the show just the guests talking to each other.
John Weisz
The hosts are terrible. Eddie is a great radio personality but not cut out for TV...and his two sidekick stooges are worthless. No wonder the show got canned.
It's not a show without hosts
What a privilege to hear two gods share little bits of their insight. I could listen to these guys for hours and hours.
Neil may not be good singer, but he has an excellent speaking voice, I am sure he could do radio or sports on the side if he wanted to.
He's the one who says "Subdivisions" IIRC.
@@JoelCarli No he doesnt its Mark Dailey from CityTV ua-cam.com/video/0KwxSk1ttFk/v-deo.html
Huh?
The opening question has been asked and answered over and over again.
I miss That Metal Show. Let’s bring it back!!!
So amazing to hear a legend share the band's writing process!
R40 was my favorite Rush tour. I had so many questions, although I appreciate the opening question. I hadn't given it a lot of thought until he asked it
the chemistry of Rush is beyond amazing, Will never see it again
wow, i would love to see more of Geddy and JP chatting, 2 of the greatest musicians (if no the greatest) of all time on one sofa, amazing
after over 40 years of playing music i gotta say playing with great players with no egos is a Godsend.
OH MY GOSH I LOVE THESE TWO I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY WERE IN THE SAME PLACE lol that's awesome. RUSH & DREAM THEATER!
It really makes me happy so see John happy ! Imagine growing up loving a band and years later be by the side of one of their members!!
My very first exposure to Rush was "Finding My Way." Hooked from that first chord fade in. Done!
It took me a couple days but UA-cam kept recommending me these Neil-related vids
so i started watching tonight and went on this gentle youtube wormhole into these.
I am discovering fun pairings like this one, Geddy as a great interviewee and Neil as a (very) well read guy who kept to himself.
Didn't know Neil personally but i felt the loss like he was my uncle or something. Like family you never got to know. Hope his family finds peace.
I dig how John was in pure awe-struck fan-mode when asking Ged his question! ..great stuff!
Geddy Lee is my Bass Icon Who Got me into Bass Guitar And I love ❤️ Watching Geddy Lee of Rush including That Metal Show
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I SOOO MISS THIS SHOW BRING IT BACK!
Wow!!! And that's how they've lasted together for over 40 years - - - Mutual respect and compromising!! Amen.
“Appregios” lol!
Love it! Keep holding the torch, Eddie !
That was hilarious! Knowing that it was spur of the moment makes it an even greater moment. Of all the interviews I've heard that was the most informative regarding the writing process between the three rock and roll gods. And it makes perfect sense considering their longevity.
*John Petrucci asked very important question .... This is awesome video*
Alex's "blah blah blah" speech was just like he plays his guitar. Doesn't have to say a word but you can hear the story and the emotion.
i have always wondered how they write their vocals. thank John!
Great guy.
Geddy Lee explaining the process of their way of music writing is BLISSFUL.
Wow, I think I would pass out from seeing my 2 favorite prog rock legends in the same room O.O
Geddy and John. Living legends in the same room. 😎🤘
I need more of this in my life!
"That's why they call me.....call me the workin' maaaaann~!!"
Geddy Lee can be the greatest bassist of all time and John Petrucci one of the best guitar players two gifted musicians speaking
2 super musicians. Everything Rush ever did is good. But for my money I feel 2112 is The most ass kicking album.
Absolutely Agree 2112 !! their best and heaviest album ever I had it when I was 16 and still listen to it today.was way ahead of it's time.
2112 greaaaaat album
I think Hemispheres was a better overall album than 2112. Even though the title song on 2112 was their best Prog epic.
i have tears in my eyes
Great show that you wish would never end. I had the honor of semi-meeting John P. one time behind the building they were playing downtown San Diego He was on the phone, as I noticed him from across the street. I walked over and gestured for him to sign something I had and shook his hand without saying a word. I didn't want to interrupt him by being star struck or a fanboy. I never know what to say to my musical hero's when I get the chance to meet them anyway so it was cool.
