I will say, the description for the game touts the robot as a "knockoff" of another more-popular robot, which is why this one looks so similar to Chibi Robo. It's a knockoff in-universe just like the game itself is.
Aww, that actually endears me a lot to the little guy. I don’t mind the design aside from the eyes but now I can see a kid getting that thing for Christmas from an old relative and forcing a smile.
Finally, a REAL successor to Chibi-Robo, because actual sequels we got certainly weren't. The heart of Chibi-Robo, the Gamecube game, was an honest exploration of how the threat of a family breaking up affects everyone, as told through an adorable little robot buddy witnessing it all. The sequels had none of that. Arlo, you definitely need to play the original. It's a Pixar movie's worth of charm and emotion.
I think Park Patrol was pretty great, though it certainly wasn’t as meaningful as that. But it still had meaning somewhat in showing how we should better take care of the environment. That said, I didn’t play Photo Finder, but Zip Lash is such a far cry from anything before. And other games were given extra hurdles, like being released late into a console’s life, or Park Patrol literally being made Wal-Mart exclusive for some stupid reason. And the actual sequel to the original wasn’t released outside of Japan!
@@TMS-Oddbot A bog standard "give a hoot, don't pollute" message, sure, but without the heart, the other elements didn't combine into enough of an emotional thread to really get invested. And yes, the weird "walmart" logo on my copy of that game is a bit of a wart. The PS3 "dmc" reboot also had a walmart logo built right into it for it's exclusive art book. It's funny. Walmart's still selling games and didn't need to resort to that at all to outlast Gamestop.
I hear that Clean Sweep/Okaeri was probably the closest Chibi-Robo sequel to the original; it even focuses on grown-up Jenny and her family. Though the issue of course is that it's also the only game in the series (aside from the first game's New Play Control port on Wii) to have never been officially released in English.
@@StardustWhip Now that's interesting. Was that one also developed by the same time? Did the story delve deeply into a new family issue your little guy helps them work through? I think my main issue with the city park one was how much potential it had. Imagine finding, say, a homeless person living in the park and deciding to help them out from the shadows, rebuilding their confidence, helping with basic needs, and giving them a chance to get back on their feet. The person might even become a park manager or something later on.
Here to say that Bloodstained is soooo good. There may be another example of an amazing spiritual successor, but this one keeps the flame for me that it is possible to do a successor properly
You already know this game is gonna get a mod that just makes it Chibi-Robo. Swap out the title texture and character model and boom. New Chibi-Robo game.
I like to think there's a Chibi-Robo helping out the KoROBO office as an assistant. Making coffee, picking up scrapped paper on the ground, waking up devs sleeping on their desks. Just a tiny intern working in game development.
honestly? that would make a great setting for a sequel in the original style, a lil chibi running around a toy company, interacting with employees, and helping scrapped toy designs get released
It makes me happy that the devs loved Chibi-Robo so much, they decided to make a new game independently. Can't wait for the day koRobo releases! And I wish the devs good luck!
This is really interesting, we’re basically getting a Chibi Robo 3. Haven’t played a Chibi Robo game so I may pick this up. Do hope this isn’t a Mighty No. 9 situation, even if that’s unlikely
There was a real Chibi-Robo three on the DS. It was a direct sequel to the first game. Unfortunately it was never exported though there is a complete fan translation patch available.
@@QuarterDollarKing I was meaning true Chibi Robo games, as park patrol felt more like a spinoff. You have the GameCube one, Okaeri Chibi Robo which like you said is Japanese only, and now this
@@PixelPikmin The reason Mighty No 9 failed is because Keiji inafune was asking way too much with kickstarter goals. Will these guys know the meaning of restraint??
Yeah, this is SO close to the original Chibi Robo game that I have no problem calling it a true Chibi Robo game. It doesn't even feel like a spiritual successor.
An example of a spiritual successor that successfully delivered is Eiyuden Chronicle by Rabbit & Bear. Konami wouldn’t let the creators continue the Suikoden series, so they founded their own studio and had a successful Kickstarter campaign. The game came out in April 2024, and I recommend it to any person interested in JRPGs.
Don't forget Yooka-Laylee by Playtonic Games, which despite being middling when it came out, it was enough of a success for the studio, that they managed to even become a game publishing firm for other indie games!
@@YellowpowR Yeah! People compared it to Retro Studio's Donkey Kong Country series. Also, it's more of a spin-off, rather than a sequel. The devs said that after they release Yooka-Replaylee, they'll resume with a sequel.
I really liked Chibi-Robo Park Patrol for the DS when I was a kid. I liked making the flowers grow and restoring the greenery to the land. Technology and nature working together.
An issue that Playtonic has talked about is that often dev teams aren't used to being completely their own company. So when a game dev is not only looking for crowd funding to develop a game but they are also starting a new company in conjunction with making said game, there can be a real problem... timelines and budgets can easily and quickly balloon, as well as the project, itself, taking a quality hit.
The similarity is very intentional! In addition to the clever Japanese wordplay other people mentioned, he’s also quite literally a “ko robo” in the story, as in, a knock-off of “some other” cleaning robot. It’s very clever!
Don't forget, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon was a Kickstarter spiritual successor to Castlevania and Yooka Laylee has its fans, at least. This looks very promising, definitely a true iteration of the original Chibi Robo, not that I'm sure how much Park Patrol and Happy Richii Ousouji lives up to that. The fact that they're making it like this tells me that it's the type of Chibi Robo they wanted to make when they were forced to make Zip-Lash.
I miss Chibi Robo for sure, it's a weird little 3d platformer but it's different and good, I have donated and I hope you do too. Glad Arlo is out here promoting the project.
Chibi-robo was one of my favorite games on the gamecube, and tho i never beat it bc it was too hard for baby me, it was such a delight to play. Ive always been so sad they never made a true chibi-robo sequel, so seeing this makes me so happy I hope theres enough people like me who loved chibi-robo and could not want it back. Its always been so unique. The pre-alpha footage looks pretty promising. The idea of solar power over a plug is so interesting and will completely change the gameplay
I think the spiritual successor success stories just aren't talked about as much because it's like "Wow...they made another one...neat." And that's not news for the bitter twitter news cycle.
Wait... WHAT?! Arlo hasn't played Chibi Robo!? The original Gamecube one? Damn.. I thought there's no way he hasn't played it.. considering it's right up his alley and one of the best games on the Gamecube.
Bloodstained is definitely a Kickstarter Spiritual Successor success story. It's fantastic, and is still getting updates/DLC 5 years later, as well as 2 "spinoff" games (one of which technically came first). And while Yooka-Laylee had a rocky release, its sidequel YL & the Impossible Lair (which could be considered a spiritual successor to DK Country) is amazing. And with the (admittedly confusing) YL remaster coming out later, the franchise is going strong.
Not super interested in the game itself but i always love supporting actual passionate people making something cool. Hope they get way more than asking.
But Arlo, Bug fables was an incredible spiritual successor to the original two Paper Mario games, and it had a very small but talented indie team working behind it.
yes but that was Arlo’s concern. Things like Mighty Number 9 and debatably Yooka Laylee (and his neverhood example) For my money Bloodstained and Eiyuden Chronicles prove that this model is a winner, but Arlo is correct about the spotty record
Man they don't even need to make a whole new game I just wish they would remastered the one for the DS that only came out in Japan because that was a true sequel the house was bigger there was more stuff to do more power ups and it was just really fun and I want to be able to play that in HD and not be using a touch screen
Hey Arlo! Korobo evokes a couple ideas for the name. ko as a prefix could be child like 子猫 for kitten ko as a prefix can also mean small as in 小声 It's relatively unlikely it means collaborate unless it's written with a co.
Even if it was written coRobo I’d think of a “company Robot” before “collaboration”. Maybe if it was written コラボ (korabo/corabo) but that would get rid of the “robo” part (and though it could add a pun on “laboratory”, I’m not sure that would be fitting nor am I sure that it would go over well considering Nintendo Labo).

thanks so much for sharing this info Arlo. I'm saving this campaign on my list of projects to back now next month. This is one of my all time fave ips.
Mighty No. 9 is definitely the best go to example of why you should be cautious with Kickstarter projects. Then on the other side of the coin there's Eiyuden Chronicle, which truly shows what a good spiritual successor can be.
Chibi Robo is one of my favorite games of all time, and after how awfully it was treated by Nintendo, I really hope this spiritual successor lives up to Chibi Robo. Definitely want to back it, so I'm very glad you brought this to attention cause I had no clue this was happening
So glad you mentioned the robot's design. I just really don't like it. My gut tells me they need to redesign it from the ground up and make it more mascot-like and appealing. I feel like half the reason younger me picked up the original was the awesome design of Chibi Robo itself on the cover.
I think your complaint with the character being bland and uninspired feels completely intentional to me with the one plot point they listed that he is a cheap, bootleg model for little household cleaning robots and I personally love it for that
I'm excited for this. When i first heard of the original chibi robo as a kid i wanted it so bad, but it was already last the game's life cycle. And then it seemed like every sequel deviated from what got me interested originally. I'm hoping this comes out so i can finally get a shot at the original concept
I never played the original Gamecube one, but I did play Park Patrol, Zip-lash, and Photo Finder and they all had such a silly little charm. I liked em all so Im definitely curious about this.
Come to think of it, I can't think of anything quite like Chibi Robo. (It's a game about a small robot who's been purchased by a family father to help with household chores. Only the household is extremely dysfunctional and as the campaign progresses and you solve quests you help the family progress towards... Being functioning. It's a story driven chore simulator (though cleaning dirt of when you're playing as a tiny robot is novel and as such feels playful) with very light platforming and combat elements, from my memories of the gameplay loop) As for your pessimism... I thought I'd heard good things about Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (And checking it seemed to be around an 8/10; though the switch version was technically spotty - the other versions apparently ran fine), and while not kickstarted both Planet Coaster (A Rollercoaster management sim by the makers of Rollercoaster Tycoon) and Two Point Hospital (A hospital management sim by the creators of Theme Hosptial) are really strong. The only outright flop of this style I recall was Mighty Number 9, with Yooka-Laylee being more mixed.
Chibi Robo Plug Into Adventure is literally the only gamecube game I'm waiting for to come to the switch. I would cry if it did. It's the last of my all time favorite games that isn't on the switch!
In regards to spiritual successors from Kickstarters, I can think of at least two examples that ended well: While a lot of people found Yooka Laylee dissapointing (forget if it was just mid or bad. Leaning the former.) I've heard lots of positivity from the sequel. Bloodstained Ritual of The Night was also a pretty solid success, so I understand. I'm sure there are other examples I'm either forgetting or I'm simply unaware of. Kickstarter is a place where it pays to be cautious and skeptical but I'd say it's also important to remember that sometimes kickstarter games turn out being fucking fantastic.
Don't forget Might No. 9, Balan Wonderworld or Yooka-Laylee (getting a remaster YEARS later) when people hype up "from the creators of" type of successors. ALWAYS be cautiously optimistic.
At least with this spiritual Successor, I feel like a lot of the key creative team is working on it, unlike Might No. 9 and Balan Wonderworld where it's 1 person who was mostly a character designer or what have you
Yooka Laylee, unlike the other 2 you mentioned, is an actual decent game. The fact it was developed in only 2 years with a limited budget and came out okay is insane, which is why the remaster is so exciting since they have more budget and more time.
I find it really surprising that you haven't played Chibi-Robo! The later games weren't all that great, BUT the original seems right up your alley! It's WEIRD, and surprisingly dark. You're a little guy running around, cleaning, while uncovering a pretty interesting mystery. I know you can't play it on modern consoles, BUT if you get a chance, you should play the original GC game! I'd watch a stream of that!
Bloodstained: ritual of the night was overwhelmingly successful, and also got two spinoff games with a proper sequel rumored. A lot of them haven’t been that successful, this is definitely a shining example though
I wasn't sure about it at first, but "Charge into Adventure" lives up to the original tagline "Plug into Adventure," not because it sounds better, but because this time it makes more sense. Charging as in (obviously) charging a battery, OR charging as in moving/running. Nice. Yeah, pretty obvious, but at first my only thought was the battery reference, didn't really read it as normal sentence... probably just me, heh.
From the kickstarter page and trailers, the "Charge into Adventure" refers to the fact that unlike Chibi-Robo, koRobo uses solar paneling to recharge. You have to seek out sunny areas during the day to charge your battery cells, though I'm not sure yet how you generate energy at night, or if you have a sun lamp for then or something. Another really cool thing is that this game is implied to take place in the same universe as Chibi-Robo, as koRobo is described as a knock-off brand of a more popular brand of household cleaning robot that the player robot's owner got as a gift, which is why it looks the way it does.
@@Starshock119 Yep, I'm aware... I especially like that last part you mentioned. Looking forward to this game. I was just commenting on the title. You cannot charge (a battery) into adventure. That sentence doesn't make sense. But you can charge (run) into adventure, and the word charge just happens to also be a nice reference to solar charging... bit of word play. I like it.
I find this great, particularly as a potential way to show Nintendo what they’re missing out on. They seemingly made a stupid decision to judge the viability of the Chibi-Robo series by how successful Zip Lash did, so now the developers took some time to regain confidence and say, “No, this can still work. We just did it wrong.”
I feel I need to remind arlo of one of the times it worked PERFECTLY. Bloodstained. We ended up getting 2 NES styled games and one brand new title that felt like Order of E 2. And in cases like Yuka and laylee it wasn't a BAD game it was just not what we all hoped for and ended up still being an alright game, big difference from mighty number 9.
One thing to note is while it shows usd in the kickstarter, the conversion rate to yen is extremely high right now so it is much more for them than it seems
I really liked "Chibi-Robo". It was a weird scaled down work simulator with having to maintain your power. I would love just a bigger, goofier, harder version.
I thought Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, from the Castlevania Symphony of the Night dev, turned out pretty good. Not quite as good as the Curse of the Moon games, but in general I think that scenario was a win.
Ko is the japanese kanji for child. The whole word is kodomo but often just ko is used as a prefix or a suffix for a kid version of stuff. So I think it's meant to be kid robo
I will say, the description for the game touts the robot as a "knockoff" of another more-popular robot, which is why this one looks so similar to Chibi Robo. It's a knockoff in-universe just like the game itself is.

a knockoff made by the original creators...lol
So the Ko posibly stands for KockOff Robo then? I love it!
Wait, that’s amazing
Hey Arlo, "Ko" can be used in Japanese as a sort of endearing prefix that means tiny or small. So it's basically "Lil' Robo"
It uses the 子 kanji right?
And chibi means a similar thing (the big head and small style)
子猫 is kitten, 子犬 is puppy, and with this same logic, 子鰐 is baby crocodile. 子ロボ is little robot.
A little more akin to "child," so this would be more like "Kid Robo."

This and Misc. A Tiny Tale makes me happy
I hope Misc. releases soon tho, its been roo long since the announcement
According to the Misc. discord server, they plan to wrap up development by the end of 2024!!
@@gimeyproductions7842 yea, so I've heard, I want it to come faster😂😂😂
Arlo
Arlo Arlo Arlo
....play chibi robo right now. literally do not wait
Chibi Robo Plug Into Adventure is literally the only gamecube game I'm waiting for to come to the switch. I would cry if it did. It's the last of my all time favorite games that isn't on the switch!
The absence of Kurashima Kazuyuki is grossly apparent.
If I had any knowledge on how this stuff worked, I would fund this game.
we might have gotten Mighty no. 9 from "from the makers of" KickStarter projects, but we also got the entire Bloodstained series as well.
Let's hope it ends up being more like the Bloodstained games than Mighty No. 9
Half way to the Kickstart goal with 30 days left
I hope it got a great story again
In regards to spiritual successors from Kickstarters, I can think of at least two examples that ended well:
While a lot of people found Yooka Laylee dissapointing (forget if it was just mid or bad.
First the ratatan creators and now this. All hail spiritual successors.
9 and Balan Wonderworld where it's 1 person who was mostly a character designer or what have you
Add in Nightcry, the spiritual successor to Clock Tower.
And Hat in Time, a spiritual successor to... every Gamecube-era platofrmer?
I think they should add costumes and cosmetics to the game you can find hidden as secrets. That would be fun.
Please support this guys!
I like it.
I could have sworn you’ve played chibi-robo
Bloodstained was made by the creator of Castlevania and that turned out fantastic
Excuse me while I scream with happiness AAAAAAAAAAA
I’m just waiting now for KoROBO ZipLash
Oh, I really want the character design to be a placeholder.
YES YES YES YES YES,FINALLY
Bloodstained ritual of the night was fire
Heard eiyuden chronicle was good too but I’ve not played it quite yet
YESSSS
Probably someone else pointed it out, but Bloodstained is another good example of a great spiritual successor
Arlo bringing back the Armikrog flashbacks... I really wish that game came out better.
I hope it does super well and they stick it to Tanabe!
The guy who made fire emblem made his own games called vestaria saga and they're pretty good.
One of My favorite game :)
I hope it’s good
I miss the genius 10 year old boy in games of old. this seems to renew that spirit in a way and I very much hope this game turns out to be a success.
I just wish the robot was as cute as Chibi-Robo lol
Chibi Robo my beloved
I really liked "Chibi-Robo". It was a weird scaled down work simulator with having to maintain your power. I would love just a bigger, goofier, harder version.
If IGA can do it, there's hope
WE ARE WINNING TODAY
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a spiritual successor made by the original creators. And its awesome.
F-Zero GX is getting a spiritual successor too.
The black and green color on the eyes also looks rather strange, kinda unsettling.
The Castlvania succesor was great by all (most?) accounts for instance.
