There was a parameter you could paste into the URL which forced youtube to show the "View in HD" option and forced HD. but then later it was integrated into the video player as simply an "HD" button (i think that referred to 720p videos) but then in 2011 youtube changed the player to the black/red one and I think between that and 2013 is when they introduced the ability to specify quality in terms of 240, 360, 480, 720, 1080. some time after that they introduced 144p as well. please correct me if you have any additional info
