Great idea and excellent video, thanks for making and sharing this! I think the colored electrical tape is a nice way to ease into classifying one’s locks, and agree the $700+ is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of folks. Have you considered selling a $10 PDF with *instructions* for how someone can assemble their own Dojo, with exact working links of exactly who to order from, what modifications need to be made, etc.? You could make a little $ for your efforts, help the community, and sure people could “pirate” the ebook/PDF but at only $10 why bother, just give Sandman something for his trouble and feel like a good person instead of a jerk 😊
One of the best and most useful lock picking videos I’ve seen yet! How to videos are good, product reviews are good, but it’s sooooo easy as a noob to the sport/hobby to get lost and not know where to go next. I love this and am absolutely going to buy the bodies you recommended but also use the tape trick! Thank you so much for making this video.
I think it's a cool idea. Some ideas: 1. It would be nice to have something written on the lock itself that defines it as a training lock. 2. It would be nice if it would be possible to open the lock by turning the cylinder in both directions, so it be possible to practice both. 3. It would be nice if you could buy each color of lock separately from the other locks, and then you could choose from several types of cylinders the one you want. It will also help the locks companies, because they will have another market to sell to, so they give the cylinders for less.
That’s a very cool idea. Buying locks is certainly one of the most confusing parts of the sport. If you were to package the first 5 or 6 maybe… as a jumping off point…. It is a very cool idea.
Great concept! Selling the locks to people looking to overcome their next challenge level, and have a “trophy” to display as well. A physical representation of their achievements, maybe a “piece” to pass down to one’s kids should they also want to follow in their parents hobby. Please don’t give-up on the idea.
Merry Christmas, Sandman. Hoping you're well with your partner and family this festive season. I remember when you first proposed the idea to me and a few other people -- you were looking for some locks that would come in a KIK system and would go through the ranks. I'm so happy that the project finished, but unfortunately as speculated, it is at such a magnitude that the price just cannot be justified. I think the biggest issue is the lack of lock bodies which can house given lock types, which severely reduces the choice of lock, thus increasing the price as other, more economic options, are unavailable (think the MIWA U9, black belt lock from Japan, 10 bucks each or thereabouts). At the same time, maybe it's for the best. They would be a big investment even if everything here was halved in price. That sort of thing is a big commitment for a newbie. Either way, I'm sure plenty of people (myself included) will be taking inspiration from this idea. Maybe there will even be a machinist who makes universal lock bodies for the major types of cores (KIK, euro, oval, australian standard) with matching adapters. That would be cool. Have a happy holidays, mate. Love your work.

Very nice review! The lock classification group list you presented is quite dated. Locks are currently ranked by all black belt members and a select few other members on a spreadsheet, once there is a decent number of rankings in for a particular lock, the locks in question are presented to the lock classification council (Peaceweapon does an excellent job with all the logistics on this). Traditionally, we would have CorrectJeans decide on all classifications and present the belt change list, however Peaceweapon now presents it based on the council approving or denying the rankings presented from the lock classification group. The council was changed from just CorrectJeans to include Rein and GravityKarma, and eventually expanded to including a few additional LPU mods.
Thank you for the information. I just wanted to give recognition to the founders in this particular video. There is definitely a lot going on behind the scenes today.
If it's possible, as this would be for collection and practice purposes, replacing as much of the bodies with 3D printing and assembling a kit for the core and remaining components might be more affordable. Or possibly a universal body of sorts with custom painted/sleeved cores (sleeves for core tolerances, possibly) and adapters to fit the body. In that second case there could just be one body to be accounted for, with a limited number of smaller adapters, all of which could be metal again. Some companies offer metal 3D printing, as well, so early orders could be made to print other than ordering the cores. (Do any of these shown locks have unique security features in the bodies that couldn't be overcome with an adapter to seat them?)

24:57 Dang, I'm purple as well, have a respectable collection (a couple Medeco's, MTL Interactive, EVVA 3KS, Goal D9, Paclock, American, etc.), and have absolutely no idea what sleeved and non-sleeved is. I tried to look it up, but I'm not having any luck finding information. Not trying to criticize the criticism, but I'm genuinely interested in what the heck you're referring to. I do locksmithing work down here in Chile, so I'll recognize there's a possibility that I just don't know the word in English
Ruko 500 locks, I believe they are made in Denmark or Sweden. They have a sleeve similar to an interchange before. Ruko 600 don’t have a sleeve. I picked a Ruko 500 on my Instagram. They are listed on the lpubelts.com site as well. Thanks for watching.
I suppose it would be more practical to have just the first 6 belts just as cylinders, cos thats what youll be practicing your picking on, but have a printed jig to put them in to have them in a daisywheel. The other four are very specialist and probably better to get them individually in the vintage market, or from locksmiths.
That will help me in my future purchases. There are so many people that gave advices on UA-cam and when you try them, it's baloney. I just succeed to open an American Lock 1100 yesterday and now I know what will be my next purchases. Just for fun, how the safety locks ranked? I find them hard for plastic body padlocks 😁
The Master LOTO lox can be very difficult. If you have 10 of them, 8 of them will be extremely difficult, and 2 will be a wash. They’re not meant for hardened security, they are just meant for reminding someone to observe an element and proceed with caution in a specific process whilst removing the padlock. I think what makes them so difficult is the lack of precision manufacturing.
Just checked out your site.. Dude... awesome!! I mean there's nothing there LOL but pretty cool I was a combat engineer and a competitive instructor I mean you definitely got me beat your resume as much more impressive. It’s such a great idea, it’s a shame that you haven’t found a partner company or some other way to make it affordable. I could see paying ~$250 for the set but $700 is way outside of most people’s budget
This might be a stupid question, for that I'm sorry. On the clk website, which type of Kik cylinders are we looking for? For instance, the yellow SC1 has 1 for patio doors, 1 for Sargent locks, and 2 for deadbolt, 1 US4, and 1 US26D. What one would be best for the paclock and do you just snip off that little tail bit and slide it in? I don't think I'm even a white belt with these questions lol.
If you put together belt packages, like a kit with everything you need to attain that rank...... I personally have had many issues tracking down locks for advancement that are not sfic's. Like 2 locks of each type required, a booklet of tips and instructions for challenge locks, pin creation, pick making, etc. and have a tool option like tensioners and picks needed for the keyways of the locks in the package
Awesome idea! Come on @covertinstruments this would be a perfect product for us locksport folk! Thanks for sharing @sandman keep up the good work. I appreciate you and all of your videos. Always well done. Also maybe if they just provided the cores and color coded the cores for cost savings?
That's a great idea and it sucks that there wasn't any support behind it. I think you could still kinda do it like a "box to black" type of product. I was talking about that with someone in the LPU Discord yesterday so there would probably be a few people interested. Sadly I think you'd have to upcharge a bit just to not lose money.
@@egyptsy9563 abus 83IC is the only other padlock that will work. sounds like your trying to save money, i tried for months to make this thing work cheap but its not. get an abus 83, and just swap out the cylinders for that but nothing else will work. there just isnt a lot of need for locksmiths to have a padlock that holds a key in knob cylinder designed for a residential deadbolt. the ones that do, use an Abus 83IC or paclock. The TOOOL KIK is a packlock KIK 1A. its no different than any of my paclocks, i just bought what size they had instock at the time, it would have cost me even more if they were all the same size.

Okay.....being new here, why not go with one lock body, but color code the core adapter to the belt colors? A 3d printable disply can be made to store each core with adapter. It would cut cost and storage space. The colored locks are cool, but to save money and space, i would much rather just coded cores.
It’s been done. Abus 83 accepts the same KIK cylinders as the PacLock bodies. TOOOL sells a paclock kik body for that purpose. So why do anything at all indeed lol. You must be new here. Welcome to my channel. I collect everything Locksport related and it’s not for practicality sake. It’s for the love of the hobby.
@sandman_locksport yup...as I stated...I'm new here. I've known about kik bodies, but I have yet to see cylinders or adapters colored for the belt levels (and even toool lonk I've tried has been a dead page). It was just a thought as money is an issue for many, and I figured it would be a cheaper alternative to the non die hard collectors. Thank you for the timely reply. Have a wonderful day.
Sandman, I would like to appropriate your idea on "belted" locks. Did you purchase your lock bodies directly from PacLock. Please continue with your great publications.
I did, my point of contact was Martha. I sent her an email explaining to her what I had done in my recent video, and that there is a possibility that Future customers would be requesting the same thing. They will get you hooked up.
Just getting into the hobby and I'd say I'm more of a Timothy or a Tim. I've been in the hobby for 3 weeks but as I get to the Orange and Green locks I'm looking at wanting more quality of life stuff like Vises, nicer turning tools and different picks already. I think if you sold a White to Blue set in the $200-$250 range people would buy (Myself included), then offering bundled Purple to black for $500-$700 or individually priced from there. People are going to start out taking a lot of time cracking the Green and Blue. You may also be able to offer something breaking them up into 3-4 segments or selling them individually with pick set expansions to suite each lock? You can offer them as individual products, but Consider the white belt lock bundle comes with a Transparent lock or cutaway, and a white body and core to match and something like a single pick and turning tool for $50-$100. The second set could come with a Yellow and Orange (Spool Pins) with an expanded set similar to the Genesis for $150-$200. Then the Green and Blue (Serrated and other security pins) lock comes with something more advanced like an Echelon. The price gets more expensive, but it also offers more value as it offers more skills acquired over more time and picks to offer quality of life improvements and utility. As you get into higher security locks offer thinner tools to get in tighter keyways and also more decoding tools. Don't think of it as "Man, this Purple Belt Lock is almost $150 on it's own", think of it as "How can I package this $150 lock with valuable tools and resources to make it easier to pick it to sell it to make a profit". Take the difficulty out of buying what you need from a number of sources from all over the internet. Give someone starting out a path to follow that leads to not only locks to buy, but tools and resources. As someone needs more time invested to crack locks, consider bundling more Quality of Life items, like Vises and Boudeng Balls Items to consider bundling Locks/ Cutaways Tools and Recovery Vises Books and Guides Think about it.
@@sandman_locksport Or discounted further if you don't want the easiest or hardest lock. I suppose functionally they are the same, but having the uniform shape and quality construction is great. I guess it just hits me in the OCD just right. You've been one of my favorite channels to watch since I started the hobby.
Dude I love your idea.. being a lifelong martial artist instructor. I can definitely utilize this system into my classes, adding a different types of challenges to my students. Promoting the development of patience and perseverance. I'd like to purchase a complete set. How much?
Seems this could be made cheaper by designing a plastic lock body that can hold these cylinders. or try to commonize lock bodies as much as possible, and sell the cylinders along with 1 or two lock bodies
White belt, because raking is only allowed at white belt. Even if it’s an orange belt level lock. But good on you for making your own pick, and for slaying locks. But there is no skill in raking, that’s why it’s only allowed at white belt.
I just did some homework and read up on the belt system and happy to say I've been quietly humbled lol Yes you are correct! I'm not going to argue whether raking requires skill...each to there own opinion but it's good to have some sort of structure in this hobby for inspiration to advance more skill. I'm 3 months into this hobby so I think it's time to move onto spp security pins. Thanks for replying ☺️
@@Cris-ih3jx there is a skill in raking, it’s just very minimal. Be proud of that skill. But you can’t rake a high security lock. That’s why security pens were designed in the first place to thwart raking and bumping. You have to be able to single pin pick those. I can teach anybody how to rake a lock, and under one minute. It’s a very low level skill used on low level locks with loose tolerances
Hey man what did you pick for your purple belt I’m working on blue right now but I was unaware that purple required two locks being picked on the purple list
Although I do love the karate belt system for ranking locks sometimes you can get a real easy or difficult lock which doesn't fit. For example I've picked an MT5+ which had a ridiculously easy sidebar. I've picked locks ranked above what I would rate myself according to the system, some because I've progressively pinned them or they were just easy ones. Personally I think you should rank youself as to what you can consistently pick, ie get a bunch of the same locks and see how many you can get open. I do love the idea of having a whole coloured set of padlocks but being a UK picker the white to blue choice would be different, probably more Abus and Squire etc.
I don’t disagree, it’s just a loose guide. I have a couple green belt locks that I haven’t picked yet. I have purple belt locks that I can open in under two minutes. But they make up a very small percentage of the rest of my collection, I own over 300 locks, so I love using the system to classify them. I feel that it is nearly perfect. But it will never be perfect. Every Lock is different.
@@sandman_locksport ha okay, I bet Martha never thought part of her job at paclock would be selling karate belt locks to us😂 Great video thanks for the new life goal👍🏼

@sandman_locksport recently got my orange in the discord. I'm not experienced enough to say what it "should" be ranked at. But I do know that locks move up and down the rank system as the mods get feedback and more locks get added. Love the idea of progressive colored lock bodies. Would even be interested in funding a startup for the lock idea. Will definitely be borrowing the electrical tape idea.
Why would I need their approval to buy the locks that they have already approved on their list and assemble them together in a row for my collection or to sell? you’re telling me you would rather prefer to just buy these individual leave from nine different sellers? That’s weird. That doesn’t make sense. Also they have a creative common copyright, which means as long as you just mention them that they invented the system then you can do whatever you want with it.
Currently a yellow because I have not been able to pic the 1100 I have while recording.. I can when I am not. :p I joined the discord a couple weeks ago, and so far the community seems really good. :) I am interested in the lock body, but only from a collector aspect.

Oh wow, I've got to get into this. I'm just getting into security pin picking(American Locks, Masterlock LOTO locks, etc), so I've considered myself "intermediate".
It’s a great idea, I’m gonna make myself a set as I rank up.
Absolutely incredible and informative video. Also checked out the store and gotta say wow, you have had a very interesting life 💙 thank you for your service 😊💙
Thank you 🙏
24:57 Dang, I'm purple as well, have a respectable collection (a couple Medeco's, MTL Interactive, EVVA 3KS, Goal D9, Paclock, American, etc.), and have absolutely no idea what sleeved and non-sleeved is.
Merry Christmas Sandman. This really is a terrific idea.
I'd absolutely buy this as a set, but if it's not financially viable that's totally understandable.
All that aside-- Merry Christmas Sandman.
where can I get the adapter you use to fit the low end key in knob cylinders into the padlock body?
It came with the lock
I suppose it would be more practical to have just the first 6 belts just as cylinders, cos thats what youll be practicing your picking on, but have a printed jig to put them in to have them in a daisywheel. The other four are very specialist and probably better to get them individually in the vintage market, or from locksmiths.
Happy Holidays Sandman!
Same to you!
this is insanely cool, I’d LOVE to buy a set like this.
Merry Christmas SANDMAN🎄
There's so much good info and perspective in this video. Great job again sandman. Best of wishes to you and yours for the new year mate 🍻🤜🤛👍
This is awesome! I love it and can't wait to participate to grow my lock picking collection
Just checked out your site.. Dude... awesome!! I mean there's nothing there LOL but pretty cool I was a combat engineer and a competitive instructor I mean you definitely got me beat your resume as much more impressive. And doesn't it suck with all the things we've done the experience we have I saw your 10 years as a bouncer / security guard I feel that pain. Finely tuned machines.. apex predators but in the civilian world the only thing that translates to is prison guard bouncer or at the top of the list, on the civilian job possibility sheet that give you on your way out was, bus driver!!! WTF!!! Anyway I'm glad you found this and I wish you a great success in it now just HURRY UP and put some products on that page brother I'm ready to buy LOL

@sandman_locksport FREEDOM!! And yes sir I also escaped the matrix so happy to hear you did too but hell I went to college 😂 thinking hitting a 6-week course at a community college for welding and then use a VA Grant to get a truck torch etc and work as my own boss on my own time to supplement my meager income I would LOVE/rather do locksmithing but it's going to take years and years to develop my skills I literally just got tools the other day new as new can be really enjoying and getting a lot from you man keep it up and thank you
Martha cool hooked me up with a couple cylinders when i messed up and lost two pins out of mine. Hada have a first comment.
I didn't, know about this ranking system. I like it.
I don't think I'm even a white belt with these questions lol.
any kik cylinder from clk will work. you dont snip off anything, you unscrew the tail cap and remove the tail piece.
@@sandman_locksport thank you for the quick response. You're awesome
YYEEESSSSS!!!!!! Totally with you on this and I'm ready to throw money at it like child support lmao also would mind telling me what sfic's are/is??
@@ricksanchez3204 small format inter-changeable. They are lock cores designed to be removed and replaced with a special key for quick rekeying
@@Mr1nferno awesome thank you so much for your time and input
Awesome idea! Come on @covertinstruments this would be a perfect product for us locksport folk! Thanks for sharing @sandman keep up the good work. I appreciate you and all of your videos. Always well done. Also maybe if they just provided the cores and color coded the cores for cost savings?
That's a great idea and it sucks that there wasn't any support behind it. I think you could still kinda do it like a "box to black" type of product. I was talking about that with someone in the LPU Discord yesterday so there would probably be a few people interested. Sadly I think you'd have to upcharge a bit just to not lose money.
Hi Sandy man bro , will the American lock 1100 work like this for putting key in knobs inside ? 😊
Unfortunately not. It’s too small. The cylinder is smaller than a regular KiK.
@@sandman_locksport Cheers mate do you know any that will work other than tool and paclock, sorry to be a pain
@@sandman_locksport thanks for your help buddy , well I’m thinking of going for paclock or abus 83, when you say abus 83IC , will any that start with the 83 work/
@@egyptsy9563 i dont know. i have 2 abus 83, the new anniversary iron rocks. those work. consider joining discord, they know more than me and can help you.
Do you have a link to where you got that screwdriver
No. Bought it off a tool truck
As someone needs more time invested to crack locks, consider bundling more Quality of Life items, like Vises and Boudeng Balls
Items to consider bundling
Locks/ Cutaways
Tools and Recovery
Vises
Books and Guides
Think about it.
I don’t plan on selling anything but you can buy a box to blue for $75 from Lockpickers bench. Thanks for watching
@@sandman_locksport Or discounted further if you don't want the easiest or hardest lock. I suppose functionally they are the same, but having the uniform shape and quality construction is great. @ thank you
Dude I love your idea.. being a lifelong martial artist instructor. I can definitely utilize this system into my classes, adding a different types of challenges to my students. Promoting the development of patience and perseverance. I'd like to purchase a complete set. How much?
Nobody sells it. I had to build it. Get into the hobby and you’ll be able to guide your students using the system
Where does one buy an ASSA 700?no luck on EBay
I bought mine in ebay 🤷🏻♂️ and I was wrong, it’s an ASSA Twin 6000, also bought on eBay.
I bought a dremel with a metal disc cutter and became a blackbelt instantly. Just kidding, love the video. Thanks!
I don’t have to pick locks because your mom just lets me in every time. Just kidding, and you’re welcome.
Seems this could be made cheaper by designing a plastic lock body that can hold these cylinders. or try to commonize lock bodies as much as possible, and sell the cylinders along with 1 or two lock bodies
Even if paclock offered the colors as a group I would get them!!!!
Do the American 1100 series locks have the ability to swap the cores for this purpose?
No. The 1100 cores are too small. So the lock is too small
@@sandman_locksport bummer. Those seem easily available and cheaper. :(
Thank you so much for the informative videos you produce!! Such great stuff
Good video.
Question for you:
I recently raked a 5 spool kik with a wire bent with a triple peak profile.
What belt would that make me ?
White belt, because raking is only allowed at white belt. Even if it’s an orange belt level lock. But good on you for making your own pick, and for slaying locks. But there is no skill in raking, that’s why it’s only allowed at white belt.
I just did some homework and read up on the belt system and happy to say I've been quietly humbled lol
Yes you are correct!
Medeco Classic, Mul-T-Lock Interactive, and a Ruko 600
I’m in for a kickstarter campaign or whatever else to get this idea going.
What paclock body are the brown, red and black in?
@@egyptsy9563 same as the others. KIK 1A, just a different tail pieces for the Medeco which is red
@@sandman_locksport thank you I’m chatting to Martha 🤘🏽♥️
@@sandman_locksport I do like the fact they keep it up to date and recategorise locks when needed.
Thank you Sandman.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hey man are you using the full size interchangeable core or the key in knob body’s from PACLOCK?
Both. Call Martha, she will hook you up.

Super cool idea!
While I agree it would be difficult to sell to the public I could absolutely see a local club (or chapter of tool for that matter) perhaps being willing to either buy the whole set or put together the whole set to use at meets ups
Does anyone sell these sets already made up?
nope, but you can call paclock and martha can get you hooked up with the colored lock bodies
Hey Sandman, just started watching your stuff because I only started a month and a half ago haha. I'm up to orange rank now and would be wondering if I could "rent" that set. I'll pay you and send it back after a set amount of time, that you decide. Let me know!
Congratulations on your orange belt! Many locks will be slayed by you I'm sure. I will not be renting or loaning anything from my collection to anyone ever. 15 years in this hobby has taught me that. Call pac lock and they will get you situated with the bodies you need, and a locksmith can get you settled with the locks. that's what i did.
This could be financially viable as a kit as a group buy project through one of those platforms like Kickstarter.
Thanks ,good video ,very informative , thanks moe
I like the belt list for the list its self. Gives guy an idea what kinda skills gonna be required. Gives new pickers something to shoot for. Though when your poor as a hooker on knickle night…. My Master Lock 930 has a couple spools and is ranked yellow 🤷
I didn’t invent the belt system. It should be orange in my book if it has security pins.
@@gergsmail01 congratulations on the belt.
