  • There are a lot of hot takes in the gaming world. Put a bunch of opinionated nerds like us together on the internet and we're going to speak our minds! But I was recently turned on to the idea of "positive hot takes" by a video from ‪@infernofoxgaming10‬ (here's the video: • My Video Game Hot Take... ) and I wanted to take a crack at one of my own. These are takes that might tick some people off, but they're not at the expense of anything that anyone likes. These are things that I like or want to see become better versions of themselves. I'd love to know some of your positive hot takes, so drop them in the comments below, and be sure to check out InfernoFox too!

    My positive hot take is: Wow, we are spoiled for choice these days! The 8 and 16 bit generations produced some great games, but we got a good RPG once every 6-12 months. PS1 era was a little better, PS2 was amazing. PS3 had a few stand out games, but not that many. Now it seems like we get a 9/10 game every couple weeks. I wish I could play it all, but I doubt there will be a time where I want to play something new and there isn't something just out, or something I missed waiting for me.

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому +1

      It's basically impossible to play all the good games nowadays, and that's both good and bad. Good because yeah, we have SO many options, there's never a drought. And bad because it's not quite as easy to have a conversation with ANYONE about the biggest hits, because not everyone will have played the exact same awesome games that I have.

      100% agree. Like I don't have a PS5 or XBox series only a Switch and an 11 year laptop and their is still really great new games I can play.

    FF XV was really meaningful to me as well, and I would argue is one of the best stories about loyalty and friendship, and how far would you be willing to go to fulfill your duty, even at the cost of that friendship itself. Also, the development time pushed the hype way above where it needed to be, so the game suffered for it in terms of reception.
    Pd. This format is great! I really love your thoughts, so I hope you keep this up!

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому +1

      Very true, I wish they would have handled the pre-release differently, because without the decade of hype leading to a game that was different than people were anticipating, it might have gotten a different reaction.

    Thanks so much for adapting my idea and providing some EXCELLENT hot takes! Definitely think they're good ones, especially about Final Fantasy XV. This is SUCH an underrated game, and doesn't deserve the hate that it gets. It really felt like a piece of Americana, but wrapped in the stylings of a Final Fantasy game and Kingdom Hearts-type battle system.

    Regarding your hot take #2 - I have no issues with remakes and remasters; some are good, some aren't, the market decides the relative value of it. If it's good, and people buy it and enjoy it, and the company makes money, everyone wins.
    My hot take would be that the biggest problem with video game remakes and remasters is that the following 7 games have never had one (except for the Pixel remaster): Trails in the Sky FC, Trails in the Sky SC, Trails in the Sky the 3rd, Final Fantasy 6 (my favorite game of all-time), Final Fantasy 9, Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King. Those are 7 of the greatest games of all-time, in my opinion, those are 7 titles that more people need to play and enjoy, those are seven titles that could really benefit from a remaster. The Sky trilogy is only playable in English on PC, not consoles, Final Fantasy 6 is an SNES game that's been ported to more modern consoles, but there's no way to play it without 90s sprite graphics (Pixel remaster was great, but could we get modern graphics and sound?), Final Fantasy 9 is from the Playstation 1 era, and not as many people have played it because it's release was completely overshadowed by FF 10 (the first playstation 2 FF). Dragon Quest 5 never got an original English release, people had to go out of their way to play it, and Dragon Quest 8 has never been released outside the Playstation 2.
    Star Ocean Second Story R got a remaster last year. I played it, and then, I remember what the problems were with all Star Ocean games. They all feature luck-based crafting systems (which objectively suck) and they all feature strong mid-evil fantasy storylines in the first half of the game, which are pretty good, and terrible Sci-Fi stories in the second half, which drag on. Every Star Ocean game has it's plot resolved with techno-babble "magic" that has no logical cohesion in the second half. I say this as a fan of Star Ocean, it's a solid franchise, but Star Ocean Second Story is NOT the Sky trilogy, or FF 6 & 9, or Hand of the Heavenly Bride or Journey of the Cursed King. It's a good game, I liked it then and I like it now, but it's OST doesn't have "Dancing Mad", "Roses of May", or "Silver Will, Golden Wings" or "Fatefull confrontation" (The Axis Pillar Boss theme, which I fell in love with because I tried to beat Sky SC on Nightmare Difficulty and got perpetually stomped on by the Enforcers).
    There were so many resources poured into Second Story R, and the remake was perfect, the flaws in that game were all the flaws in the original game that were kept. I guess my question is: if you're going to remake things, why are you remaking The Last of Us Part 2, a remake which does play like a shameless cash grab, since the time that passed between the remake and the original was so short that, really now, how much work did you really put into improving the experience? FF 6 still has so much nostalgia, a faithful remake with modern graphics and sound, would be magnificent.
    It's kind of why I have a hard time being that sorry about the layoffs in the industry; the video game industry is pretty terrible at understanding what its customers want. Japan is much better at it than the US is, which is why the massive layoffs are mostly state-side; Japan seems to be doing fine. I'll end my comment here, it's gone way too long, and no one is ever going to read it.

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому

      Good points - one of the big differences with Japan is that it's very, very hard to lay someone off there, so mass layoffs aren't anywhere near as prevalent. And honestly, the US games industry is so focused on funneling money to the top of each company that even a really good remake/remaster probably isn't preserving all THAT many jobs. In an ideal world, it would go a lot further toward keep devs in work. Because at the end of the day, it's the devs that end up suffering from the layoffs, and it's not even them that are running the industry into the ground. Good old Bobby Kotick and his friends... Ugh. But anyway, yeah, I can see your points on Star Ocean 2R as well, and I desperately hope for a Sky trilogy remaster soon.

    Man, really good takes. Specially the exclusives, I was shocked by the idea but you are right. We can steer towards that by buying on what is the most open platform and that's PC, there are some walled garden in there but Steam and specially GOG are the options that don't tie you to a brand of hardware. And thanks to some very talented devs and Valve's support we are now given the option to also choose between Windows and Linux so PC format is most likely the way to follow.

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, and even though people will argue that, like, Steam is exclusive or GOG is exclusive or Epic Game Store is exclusive or whatever, it's not the same thing as consoles. I don't have to buy a Steam computer or an Epic computer in order to buy those games. I just have to download a different (free) launcher. Even if that might be SLIGHTLY annoying, it's still leagues better than having games locked behind $500 machines.

    Another great video brother, thanks for putting it together! While I don't align with you 100% on FF15, which I played at launch all the way to completion and again last year after all the patches and DLCs, this is totally your opinion and I am glad you liked it. I'm with you on Final Fantasy XV. Experiencing the story in full with its supplementary content had an emotional impact on me that no other Final Fantasy could match. When I finished the book, I was just in awe.
    I've played every Final Fantasy game a myriad of times. I replayed all of them recently. Like everyone, 9 used to be my favourite. But after replaying them, it became clear that 15 blows 9 out of the water in terms of narrative. And 13 follows after it.
    As a 30 year old, 15 and 13 hit so much harder. They're real stories with real characters. The narratives are significantly more complex than the previous Final Fantasy games but the story is told through clear focuses. That's good story-telling.

    • @JustTheGems

    I have a headcanon that Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest are in the same world. Endgame spoilers for both so I'm going to leave a number of spaces before I detail why.
    Take a look at that very last room where you fight the Dark King in Mystic Quest. Compare that to the room where Noctis gets sucked into the crystal. Also, take a look at the Dark King's first and second form. I like to imagine he is using the Royal Arms from XV to attack you and Phoebe. I don't put a ton of stock into this theory but its fun to ponder over.

    I really like hearing your takes! I rarely reply to videos but I always feel the urge with yours, I rly appreciate that u have a relationship mindset with your approach to this platform, your heart is in a good place and ur not just leashing urself to the algorithm & common expectations like so many creators do. ur true to urself & also make space for everyone, a both/and approach that is what we need more here! I appreciate your gentleness & care
    I liked ur takes in this video. I agree, console exclusivity is simply a capitalist ploy at this point, though it was birthed from a different place then other media so the backstory is more legitimate than its existence tday. it began in a way where video games didn't exist as one thing, therefore the multiple systems (which functioned quite differently as hardware!) had quite uniquely coded games that would only work on a certain console, so it was easier for companies to hold on to that separation & take advantage of it for profit later on. we are at a place now where consoles & gaming code is standardized enough that the only thing making games exclusive is companies' desire for profit & the gatekeeping barriers they put up (esp for indie developers & poor gamers). I also do not buy into the "leads to lack of competition= bad games" argument... it's actually the exact opposite from my perspective. good games come out of cooperation & sharing ideas & having art, creativity & passion be the focus as opposed to rushing (& often straight up abusing) workers to pump out the next moneymaker (or sad clone of a rival company's moneymaker). the pressure that is put on developers to make the next big cash cow so the company can steal sales from others is detrimental to everyone involved except the 1% of hardcore capitalists at the top, & the seperation means that most ppl who play games will be financially locked out of experiencing some of the wonderful art out there.
    this leads me to remakes/remasters. I think they are wonderful, as long as they're made out of love, care & accessibility & not simply a cash grab. often, they remove the very barriers that I was just talking about! because something previously exclusive is often released on all platforms. for instance, I never had the opportunity to own any PlayStations growing up, because that money went towards Nintendo. when final fantasy X came out, I wanted to play it so badly, but didn't have the console it needed or the money for any of it. now, 20 years later, I just started playing the HD remaster on PC. that's fantastic! so ya, overall I'm all for it, with the usual anti-capitalist caveat :)
    as for final fantasy XV, I have no opinion as me just starting X is only me playing my second FF game (the first being FF Tactics advance, I fricken loooved that game as a kid!).

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому +1

      I loved reading this, thank you! Yeah, I think we're vibing on these issues, I'd love to see these artificial barriers torn down between people who enjoy games. And the bummer of it all is, so many of us have been conditioned to think that this division is actually GOOD for us. Hopefully things continue to standardize and the focus can be just on the art these developers are creating.

    • @terrjackson9283
      @terrjackson9283 2 місяці тому

      ur so welcome, thank u! 🙂 I'm glad u mentioned the division conditioning aspect- the more divided we are, the more easily we can be taken advantage of by capitalism!

  • @FriendsAndGamingYT
    @FriendsAndGamingYT 3 місяці тому

    I think the good thing about exclusives is that developers only have to focus on one system and get the most out if that particular system and work on it alone rather than trying to work around multiple places to play it that could bring up issues! But it would be nice to see games on as much devices as possible and in more hands! Remasters and remakes are nice, though i feel it would be cooler to see it for games that where stuck in certain regions and release them worldwide, because there be loads of games like parasite eve id love to get a offical release to play in Europe. I always thought people liked and felt FF 15 was good! Not a brilliant game, but one you could easily enjoy! Nice to see a postive takes on gaming!

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому +1

      I think the focusing on one system thing is true to an extent, but it was more true back in the old days. Nowadays, the consoles are all using off-the-shelf architecture, so it's pretty easy to release on multiple platforms. In my IDEAL world, though, there wouldn't be platforms at all, so everyone would be working with a sort of "standard" of specifications. With some wiggle room for higher frame rates/better graphics or whatever, so people could still choose preferences.
      But anyway, thank you! I really like the positive takes thing, I may have to do some more.

  • @chuckhaynes9166
    @chuckhaynes9166 3 місяці тому +1

    My takes on your takes:
    Exclusivity: Agree with this. Exclusivity exists for a negative reason: to sell consoles and gain market share. It's actually kind of disconcerting to see people actually buy some of the things they tell the public about it. All consoles and the PC itself serve various market demands, that's why they are successful. They all have advantages, disadvantages, and most importantly, preferences that gain audience loyalty. The software itself exists as a parallel market. That's the cold business analysis, but what Exclusivity harms artistic independence and creativity as well.
    Remakes: I'm of 2 minds about this. On one hand I agree, they are fantastic. I'm playing through P3 reload right now, and I can't believe how much I'm enjoying something I finished several different ways already.
    I think it can be a cash grab though, or sometimes just be disappointing. I really looked forward to the front mission 1st release...only to see that it's almost too faithful...faithful to the point I wondered why I wasn't playing the DS remaster. It's called a "remake" but it isn't, it should be a different game, or have a massive game play or art expansion.

      Absolutely, I think remakes/remasters can go VERY wrong if they're not handled with care. If all you're doing is creating a way for people to play the game, then a simple port will do just fine. If you're going to remake/remaster, include some compelling reasons to upgrade, for sure.

  • @mechaotakugamer
    @mechaotakugamer 3 місяці тому

    My positive hot take is that remakes and remasters are a necessity to allow newer generations experience what we experience in the older years of gaming. Oh and Radiata stories is the most underrated square Enix jrpg and needs a remaster or remake more than any other rpg

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому +1

      Exactly, until we get to a point where it's trivially easy to play any game from the past, then remasters and remakes are providing an important service to people who missed them the first time around.

It really does allow for more people to experience a game, even more so since people would be willing to spend normal price on a remaster but maybe not necessarily $200 on the original that only comes on a certain console, which is why I also agree that the more platforms a game can release on, the better. Granted, I could see how it's hard for indie teams to port their game to all platforms. And yeah, I thought Final Fantasy XV was alright, wasn't my favorite but it wasn't terrible either!
    And thanks for showing that post by Geoff Keighley, I'm going to check that out!

    Thanks for the video. I love this concept! My positive hot take would be that Trails of Cold Steel 1 is my favorite game in the franchise. While I think all the political intrigue was interesting in all the other games I really loved the focus this game had on the development of the relationship of the characters. While I haven’t played the Sky games, the rest of the games seemed to focus on the big bad things that were going on in the background. This game just felt like it was about the characters themselves. (Even though the prologue gives a preview to some of the later game events). Many felt the school life parts were boring but these were some of my favorite parts. The writers did an excellent job of making me feel attached to these characters.

    I almost skipped to the Final Fantasy XV hot take. Have to say that I agree that people are too harsh on it, and the DLC does make it more complete (though too bad they didn't finish that). What makes the world intriguing is the fact it is different from the other games, taking a more modern setting (and also they tried to do something different too). I enjoyed my time with it and so did my daughter. I also will never forget humming the classic theme with Robbie Daymond (who voices Prompto) at a convention once.

    I think, to a certain extent, XV is already looked at a little more positively than it was before. I think most just remember how it launched more then anything else and fall back on that. I doubt many who bought it initially went back and replayed when all the extra DLC stuff (that should have been there at launch, but I digress) dropped. Maybe a few are doing so now and changing their tunes, as people have started to do with XIII. Or maybe the generation of fans who played it and loved it are now feeling more comfortable talking about it.
    I don’t make videos and see all the comments like you do, so I’m probably still in the minority, but I do think it’s looked at in a better lens then it once was overall.

While they can be cash grabs, so very often they prove to be either a chance to play older games or they improve on older games or offer a new experience with a known game. But if you you know the context of everything, holy shit is it a beautiful story. The game play gets dumped on sometimes too, but I love it. The early game was meant to feel like a road trip with your bros and that's exactly what it felt like.

    Another angle for your original argument of movies not being exclusive is that there are a lot of movies and shows that ARE exclusive to their respective streaming service. You have to subscribe to Netflix for Stranger Things and to Amazon Prime Video for Invincible and to Disney + for anything Marvel or Star Wars. It's not locked to a specific hardware but it IS locked to a specific streaming service.
    I think the main problem with FF15, and the main reason I have no desire to play it, is that it looks very much like Final Fantasy: Jersey Shore Bro Trip. Whether it actually is or not, it definitely looks like that's what it is. I'm much more about the FANTASY in Final Fantasy myself. You're not an idiot at all for liking it though.
    I agree with the Remasters. As long as it's been a generation or two and they do something to improve it like quality of life improvements or making it HD, then I'm happy with it. I wish they ported more earlier games to modern consoles too. Like why aren't all the 3DS games on the Switch? Where's Radiant Historia?

    • @JustTheGems
      @JustTheGems  3 місяці тому

      Yeah, and even in the future I'm imagining, I could still seeing "that" sort of exclusivity remaining. Like, if I want to watch a particular show, I have to subscribe to Netflix or whatever. That's kind of annoying, but I'm not gated out of it by some hugely expensive piece of hardware, so it doesn't bother me AS much.
      And yes, if they would just give us Radiant Historia on Switch, I'd be a happy camper.

    I like the concept of this video, but disagree with the positive hot takes. Exclusives sell consoles and give them their own identity and reason to buy them. Also the digital movie comparison, Apple, Amazon, etc are controlling your digital rights. As for the remake/remasters, I am not totally against it, but if it could just run and look better for free like how PC does it (sometimes Xbox) by adding frame rates, pixel counts, then a similar rerelease is a ripoff. But the games that are full remakes with robust new content, that I can see positives in that.

      I would challenge by saying, imagine consoles were taken out of the equation. No consoles, just sit down in front of your TV, pick ANY game ever made, and play it. That's what we get with movies right now, and I think having that same experience with games would be awesome. And you're right that Apple/Amazon/etc. control the digital rights for movies, but my bigger point there is just, I can buy/rent the movie from WHOEVER I want. I don't have to get corralled through one particular studio's app in order to watch a particular movie.
      I think there can definitely be differing viewpoints on this, but I guess that's where I stand. I think it would be worthwhile to try it, as an industry, and see if we (as in us, the players) would benefit.

      I wouldn't do any of it myself, personally. I'm all about enjoying art any way you can. But to your analogy, I wouldn't say you should be able to buy a Big Mac at Burger King. But there's a piece missing that keeps it from being a one-to-one analogy, because there's no device or other thing necessary for you to consume either a Big Mac or something from Burger King. You don't need to invest in proprietary technology to enjoy those things, so in the same way, I'd like to see us not have to spend money on proprietary technology in order to play particular games, that's all.

      Missed the other part of your question. I don't know if "open source" is how I'd describe what I'm thinking. It's similar to the format wars that happen whenever a new movie format is introduced. Every major player presents their submission for what the new standard should be, and whoever wins in the market becomes THE standard for all going forward. Beta lost to VHS, HDDVD lost to Blu-ray, etc. So Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, whoever could put forward their idea of what the next thing should be, but only one comes out in the end.

    Positivity? On the internet? What sorcery is this?
    Expected joking aside, it really is nice to just have pleasant sentiments going around now and then. It's so easy to let yourself stew in negativity since it comes naturally to many but that's also a good way to ruin your outlook on so many things. There's just too much misery and jadedness out there.
    I guess one positive hot take from me is that we don't really get truly bad games anymore, or at least anywhere near as often. More often than not, it usually just boils down to individual tastes more than the actual quality of a product. Well, that and the situations surrounding said product but that's a subject for another time.
    Throughout the years, primarily being more into the niche spaces, I've come to appreciate a lot of games and other sources of media even if they might not be the best things out there. Many of them usually don't score well, mediocrely if not outright terribly even, but they were memorable enough experiences that I still fondly look back on for one reason or another. Maybe they had a solid gimmick I liked, maybe they didn't so anything special but where just solid overall, maybe their stories got me invested, maybe I loved their aesthetic or music, maybe there was an underlining message that spoke to me, or maybe I got to them at just the right time.
    A game I like isn't a good game, it just had enough aspects I managed to resonate with.
    A game I didn't like isn't a bad game, I just didn't connect with enough of it.
    It isn't about whether something is good or bad, whatever those qualifiers may mean, it's about what we managed to get out of the experience. And when it comes to that, we are spoiled for choice. Not everything is going to be for everyone, but there's always something for everyone.

      I completely agree. I hesitate to ever say a game is "good" or "bad" because that's so objective. Like you said, the skill level of devs across the board is so, so much higher than it was 30 years ago, so a truly "bad" game is pretty rare. It's like film now, where there are directors whose work is going to be more my taste, and other directors who aren't. We have so much in the way of choice now.
