How to make a Flat Cap for Adults and Kids 1 of 2.

- Flat cap tutorial I put together to help with the construction of my flat cap pattern. This pattern is meant to be sewn with a 3/8" seam allowance which is already included in the pattern measurements.
The brim inserts and sweatband material are also available in my shop.
For this pattern and more leatherworking classes, supplies, tools, patterns, and art. Go to:

I started to sew the fold in the back when I do a one size fits all, After the sweatband is in and folded to the inside I put a line of stitches about 3/8" up across the back while I stretch that section out, it helps the cap look cleaner when you have the excess material from the bunching. I only do that on the one size fits all caps that have that style in the back. I'll put a picture of this up in my Etsy listing for the pattern.
When I make the large size it usually sits somewhere in the 7-3/8 to 7-5/8 US (A) range. Which is 22-3/4" to 24-1/2" head circumference.
When I make the Medium size it's usually fits around 6-7/8 to 7-1/8 US (A) sizes. Which is a 22 1/8" to 23" head circumference.
If you'd like to see more of my work I have a lot of pictures and albums on my Facebook page. / leatherworkerupholsterer

Hey brother you have gotten so much better at teaching and explaining you work as you do it. I would appreciate it if you re did this hat video using leather this time. I am a very visual learner and I know it would help me a lot seeing it done with leather. That way you could also explain your leather choices. Thank you in advance.
Thanks, Thats a good idea. I'll give it some thought. In the mean time to help out I would suggest going with a 2oz chrome tan. Make sure the direction with the most stretch goes in the same direction mentioned for the fabric version on the pattern printout.
I have the pattern on my Etsy cart! All I wear is these hats! I had a nice leather one and it was stolen! Couldn’t believe it. Since then I’ve been wear fabric. After this I won’t! Thank you!
I like these style caps to. That's too bad about the lost cap.....

😊
amazing attention to detail!
Thank you!
Very good instructions with a lot of important hints
Thanks Eva! I'm glad you like it.
Nice work. I'ma perfectionist just like you. Great tutorial. I'll be making my first hat today and your video gave me the confidence to get it started. Thank you for the post!
Thanks! You bet.
Went and bought 24 clips too. Brilliant idea. If I can return some knowledge, instead of using the block of wood, try a strong magnet as a seam allowance guide. I purchased them from Lowe's for a few dollars. I also use one to hold my top and bobbin thread when starting a seam.
Nice, thanks, I'll have to give that a try.

Excelente aula, bem detalhada, obrigada
You're welcome, Thank you!
Dude, great video!!! I liked the way you called attention to working the fabric as if one is a sculptor shaping the form of the hat - Bravo! The bad news is yer machine makes the most hideous sound I've ever heard on a sewing machine yet. I'm game and am purchasing your pattern. :D
Thank you very much! LOL, yes my machine is old and LOUD! I would love to own a nice post, and flat bed machine someday. Then I could start making more videos.
Fabulous. thank you very much. you are creative.
Welcome. Thank you.
Thanks for the detail. I am studying millinery and picked up a few tricks for perfecting my flat pattern hats
Awsome! You bet.
Wonderful video, it has been very helpful and informative. We have bought your pattern and are now ready to make a leather cap! I'd like to make one kind suggestion though... your sewing machine clutch motor is so loud that it is very distracting. An industrial sewing machine servo motor has almost no sound, is extremely easy to install, makes industrial sewing a dream and can be purchased through Amazon for only around $100. You have a very special talent for making sewing videos and this would make your videos so much better. Just a suggestion. The very best to you!
Thank you Cheri, and thanks for the advice I'll keep that in mind.
I totally agree. It’s very hard for me to watch this video because of the noise.
Cheri - I did the same on my Consew machine and I have much more control. That clutch motor is very hard to control! Servo motor was a breeze to install. Know anyone who wants to buy a clutch motor??
I've made my own patterns, I'm going to add some of your techniques. Thank you! I bought your pattern in order to add to my pattern. I will shout you out in my next sewing video.
Hi Steph, Cool, you bet.
good job and thank you
Thanks and welcome

I agree, thats one of the reasons I made this pattern and video.
I'm also a fan of flat hats, it's rare in sri lanka, is there a way to import from you,
Hi, I'm not doing any custom orders at the moment. But the digital pattern is available through my website if you or someone you know would like make them.

Good evening Tony,
I purchased your pattern a couple weeks ago and am now getting to sewing it. What length of stitch are you using or recommend?
Hi Ryan, It really depends on the size of thread i use. I go pretty wide when using a thick thread. I would suggest doing a small test piece to see what you like. You could make sure your sewing machine is dialed in at the same time.
Me gusta su trabajo yo incursione en carteras pero nunca conseguí q alguien que me enseñará hacer gorras usted no podría mandar los moldes le escribo de Argentina muchas gracias por su enseñanza
Thank you, I hope my videos helped. You're welcome.
Thanks for sharing; pls advise, how do you stick that piece of wood to the machine?
Hi, I use double stick tape. I started using the double stick basting tape I sell since I had it laying around and that works good to.
Many many thanks for this.
You're welcome Pat, thanks!
Hi Tony, thanks for.sharing your skills, I got a problem buying the pattern at Etsy, it says that the price has changed but doesnt allow me to buy. Can U do something about it? Thanx
Hi, I'll go take a look and see what I can do.
I relisted the pattern, hope that helps?
How do you size the cap? I wear a larger hat 6-7/8 will this be large enough?
The etsy listing gives you the rough size for the middle/medium pattern line. Due to sewing techniques and material used it may not be right on the nose. If you do the larger of the three lines you should be good. I also suggest other ways to adjust size. Might be a good idea to go a little big then stretch the elastic sweatband so that is fits just right.
Hello Tony
How much piece to make it one day. and how much price your hat.
Hi, I don't take custom orders, but when I was it took me somewhere in the 3 to 6 hour range to make 2 caps.
Will your pattern make a hat large enough for the Husky-Headed among us? (7 7/8)
Yup! Start with the large and you may need to adjust it a tad.
Adorei. Obrigada.
Nina Lopes you're welcome, thank you.
Hi Tony, is it possible to make this cap in leather? and handstitched? I do not have machine I make all my leather stuff by hand. Thanks for answering.
Hi Suzy, yes I make them in leather. I find its better to use a 1-2oz chrome tan. If it gets to thick it starts to look funny. But some prefer the "Thick" look. Yup you could sew it by hand. It would be a challenge! But could definitely be done.
Merci beaucoup ! Où peut-on se procurer la patern ? Belle journée à vous
Thank you Virginie! I sell it through my etsy shop. www.etsy.com/shop/TonyAllenBernier
Está excelente pero hay se consiguen los precios pero no están los moldes que pena me encantaría pedirle el favor para ver si nos los obsequia plisssssss tony
Mercedes Herrera thank you.
Essa aba é a mesma de boné?
hello I loved your video send me the mold of this beret.
Hi, thanks! The pattern is sold through my Etsy shop. www.etsy.com/shop/tonyallenbernier
I have bought the pattern, but do not know how to turn it into a real size
Hi Rita. If you select 100% or actual size in your print settings (it may say something else but similar. It all depends on your print software). It should print out so you can tape the parts together. If your print software isn't working for you OfficeDepot or a similar store can print it off on one big sheet.
Thanks Rita. Tony
Great tutorials. Your machine seems so powerful to so easily over the visor/Peak.
First, what type of machine is that, ..and secondly, what material do you use for your visor inset?
It's an industrial machine, meant for upholstery. The brand is Rex. I believe it's like 80 years old or something. The plastic I usually use is HDPE. But a slightly thinner cutting board material runs through the machine better.
good
Plz give the measurements for 6 month baby
sorry, The caps aren't situated to go that small.
Me gustaría obtener los moldes. Por favor
I think you're asking about the plastic brim insert. Or the pattern itself. The pattern can be bought in my Etsy shop, if you're looking for the plastic insert. It's HDPE. I'm not currently selling that, but I was thinking about it.
I now sell the plastic inserts through my etsy shop. www.etsy.com/shop/tonyallenbernier
which cutting board do you use? where do you get them?
I found a couple at the good will, and target had some.
Tony Bernier do you remember the brand?
No I don't. But I think if you pick one up and bend it a bit you shouldn't have a problem deciding whether or not it will work. Something else I thought would make good insert material are those self healing cutting mats you can get at the hobby shop.
Two words:
Tailor's ham
Why aren’t you showing how to make the patterns ?
yes i like to know that too
Because it's a tedious process, and I sell patterns to pay my bills!
Eu quero o molde.
Too many clips not needed
I've taught many sewing classes and each person finds the way that works best for them. The resulting hat here is very nice so I think he has found the way that works best for him!
Good afternoon, friend, could you send me the measurements of this beret?
