- The "Linndrum" LM-1 is a legendary piece of music instrument history. Watch our tech guide Thomas P. Heckmann take this classic through its paces in this instalment of his Devil's Kitchen series. The LM-1 was the first in the Linn Drum Computer series and was famously used by Prince, Heaven 17, Human League and basically every band in the 80s.

No modern drum machine has that feel and groove
Great history lesson, fascinating and humorous without being fake or pretentious. RIP Prince.
Best sounding and feeling drum machine
THE BEST sample based drummachine ever!
amen!
The best along with Oberheim DMX ;-)
Nah, the LM-1 is the most versatile drummachine of the era..
The LinnDrum, Oberheim’s DMX & DX, and Emu Drumulator were all far superior and had better sounding samples and construction than the LM-1 did.
If only Mr. Linn would bless us with a modern version.
I think this is very possible, Roland have set the example and many should follow.
He already sort of did with the Tempest. And concerning his website he's already working on a new Linndrum, but no news recently.
I disagree on this, that Roland has set an example recently ;-)
+Telekom Electronic Beats i am very exited about that system 500 they made in conjunction with malleko ,the virtual analog stuff like Aira series not so much
+John Gorgis if any manufacturer is setting standards its korg with the minilogue and volcas ,i do love the idea of a dave smith tom obherheim joint project on the obx6 but its simply out of my price range
A real nice demo...12 sounds that defined a lot of my favourite tracks back then.
it was SO phat!!! I love it!!
I believe that Prince had his modified so that the LM-1 could have triggers hooked up to it. In doing that the drummer could switch from drum machine to live drums and vice versa. Let's Go Crazy is a good example of that.
I believe the group ready for the world did the same thing-especially OH SHEILA
Sure wish they made Drum machines with a mixer like that now :-)
thats one of the reasons i love the tr707
That rimshot.
Prince!
His finger drumming is better than my drum programming. :D
Sounds like Heaven 17 getting funky LOL First album must have been all the LM1
Wow , I just check them out. Incredible music. Yes , that's for sure the LM1
yeah i like these videos
Super cool !!! Very educational.

I think I've seen them all since i love TPH, and thanks for keeping me up to date. ;)
Will subscribe off course.
solid work! thanks for the support
Great video!!
The cowbell on this LM1 sounds much more similar to the LinnDrum cowbell than other examples of heard of the LM1.
Wait a minute-I thought the original LM-1 drum machine did not have a 'Crash' sound? Is this a modified version?
Come on Behringer clone it.
A leaked (and now redacted) product list included something labeled as "lmx". Probably this. I forget the name but a oberheim dmx clone was implied as well...😍😍😍
Did he say Roger Linn didn't "cut them exactly"?
What is the serial# of yours?
Juicy Fruit
The best sounding snare drum on a drum machine in my opinion. I also especially enjoy the high hat's crispness, and the fact that you can adjust the length of the high hats.
Agreed
This thing stood the test of time. Heard wal*mart blasting human league on their crappy outdoor speakers out front and the linn sounds as fat as ever.
I love this guy. I'm a techno producer and almost a year ago I made a remix for a well known artist and all other remixers were also well known exept me which was a big honor for me. After the promos went out my remix got the best feedback including TPH's. I just went crazy when I read this :]
You can hear these drums on Queen Radio Ga Ga and Break Free songs.
The lm-1 is not a Linndrum... The Linndrum came out after the LM-1 in 1982... I happen to own a LM-1 Rev.2 serial# 202 so happy!
Im getting a Rev 2 very soon serial#187.
Love the sound of this thing. Guess I'll have to be content with samples of it. Would love a go on one :-o
