We do everything we can to follow our hearts to protect life... water and land. So much is out of our control. And yes, grieve. Honor the work, even when it feels hopeless. It is! We're all gonna die!! 😅
Yet while we can, let's live. And do our best to help ensure others can too. ❤
    Great interview. 🎉

I listen to her talk about ending oil and coal, and all I can see is that everything in her frame is made of oil. Her microphone, the pen in her hand, her nylon jacket, her fake eyelashes, makeup, and hair products, the paint on her wall, her computer, and likely even the electricity powering her lights and computer was generated using oil and/or coal. Even if it were generated from wind or solar, the turbines or panels required oil and coal for their mining, refining, transportation, and manufacturing. And the same is true for any one of us capable of watching this video. Everything is hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon dependent.
The problem we're discussing is the definition of existential. Our entire global civilization is built on oil, gas, and coal. It is fueling a mass extinction while it is simultaneously the very lifeblood of modern civilization.

Yes well it seems obvious we will need to simplify our lifestyles, it will be non-negotiable at some point. Human beings lived well before we had all this plastic junk, we can do it again. Nature is abundant and it provides.

Rachel, I heard your grief upon returning from that conference. As a sci/math teacher who's been aware of energy use for decades... I too am hopeless. I am a recovering addict. An addict us unwilling to change until the pain is great enough. We are ready when we are "sick and tired of being sick and tired." Industrial civilization is too addicted to its comforts (pulse check... how much are we willing to give up hot showers? Long-range travel? you know what I mean). We are not not sick and tired enough yet. When we are at 2 degrees C above pre-industry and 3 degrees C is a visible future, and conflict abounds, then we will be willing to seriously reduce resource use. That's what I'll dedicated the rest of my life to (I'm 56 with a 9 year-old daughter). Set her up for solutions/success, but this will be a multi-generation process. I will model the alternatives. It's up to us to do so. Our kids will have to take it from there. Life is beautiful, but much work to do without seeing the end result. :-)

Thanks Fabian. Wow, this was the conversation people like Kevin Anderson, Hugh Hunt, Peter Wadhams, Johan Rockström and others were having in 2015 and in some cases much earlier, which Extinction Rebellion picked up on and started incorporating the social science in 2018. Since then we've moved through Burning Pink, Insulate Britain, Just Stop Oil, Letze Generation, and the A22. This is a well established theory of change we're looking at that's being further developed as we go. It's interesting to see how younger generations are ever so slowly picking up and getting with the game. Incrementalism and the present system will kill life on the planet, as Fabian says. It's driven by the greed of the economic/international banking system the IMF and the BIS. It's a political crisis, the super rich vs everyone else. When we wake up to that, we can start to do something about it. Fabian is right. Let's keep working at mobilizing people, especially the younger generations. It's their future that's being used up by today's kleptocrats. Don't leave it too late. It's passion, energy, determination, care for each other, and non-violent revolution and resistance we need,. Not more of the same Business as Usual

  • @garyhoover9750

    Thank you for the conversation.
I think it is crucial to recognise that our species is already functionally extinct.
We are well into the sixth mass extinction, which is anthropogenic and is happening very fast compared to the previous 5 extinction events.
The fundamental crisis is a crisis of relationship.
How we get our food determines how we treat one another.
Indigeneity - relating to all of our relations within Creation as sacred beings - this is essential for life to exist.
It is unlikely that we will fix this, but living a life of loving relationship includes letting go of ultimate outcomes.
We live in loving relationship because that is the way to live - not as a way of controlling the future.
I believe that none of the nation states, corporations, or economic systems that dominate our planet are open to the necessary change.
We need to live the change with awareness that the institutions in power will resist and suppress the needed change.
The destruction and violence of the ecocidal megamachine will increase.
No one can say what the outcomes will be, but we are in for an incredibly intense period of destruction and violence.
The Megamachine is not stoppable, but it will hit the wall of ecological collapse going at full speed.
I wonder what creatures will be alive after the next 15 years or so?
    What to do?
Learn to grow and share food in close, loving local community.
    Save seeds.
    Abandon the modern industrial lifestyle.
Notice the collapse of ecocidal civilization, and see if your little beloved community can survive as it happens.

The number one thing that any one person can do to address the worldwide poly crisis is to support a voluntary reduction of the human population.
We need a 2% ecological footprint tax for the richest 1% of the world to hire the appropriate medical staff, and set up mobile units that could go to communities around the world, paying people to get sterilized.
An organization modeled after the nonprofit World Vasectomy Day would be ideal.
When considering, renewable energy options to mitigate the suffering caused by our predicament… Don’t believe the bright green lies! There is nothing renewable about so-called “renewable energy“.
Energy powers ecological devastation independent of its source.
If human beings actually had an endless source of free clean green energy… Which does not exist it would only fuel the acceleration of the destruction of the biosphere.
Deforestation, ocean depletion, habitat loss, desertification, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, groundwater depletion, global warming, overpopulation, rampant pollution, and the six mass extinction would all continue to accelerate.
This is not a supply problem… It’s a demand problem! Fewer humans equals less suffering for all life on earth! We really need to promote government and nonprofit funded vasectomies and tubal ligations.
I realize that it is extremely unlikely that governments will pass a tax on the rich to pay for voluntary sterilization, and you may not be able to contribute, or participate in a nonprofit that funds voluntary sterilization. However, you can discuss with others whether it is ethical to bring a child onto a planet in the midst of global industrial, and ecological collapse. We can talk about the ways that we can mitigate the consequences of ecological overshoot, or people can stay silent, remain ignorant, live in denial, continue to celebrate procreation, and contribute to the ensuing misery.
We can either reduce our population by choice… Or we can let nature do it in her unmerciful way. it’s biology 101.
A life that is never brought into existence, is a life that will not have to experience the wretchedness of the unequivocal, impending collapse.

Yeah. The problem I saw with this discussion is they didn't talk about the personal sacrifice needed to live sustainably, or the fact that having offspring is completely counterproductive to helping the planet. This isn't a personal attack on them but to show how entrenched consumptive capitalism is, as well as how innate our nature to breed is; also,😅 how the tiny percentile of the population that are truly aware of the relative state of the planet are some of the most wealthy and educated and have obviously taken advantage of the mega machine. It's easy to point out the problem but the fact is it's our consumptive nature that is fueling the mega machine.
More evidence that the train will hit the cliffs at full speed.

You can not change this, because it is not only the entrenched power that has a stake in the current system. Everyone with a 50-inch flat screen and two cars has a stake in the current system. And in the end, those same people will survive. When it comes time to sacrifice people, that will be Africans and Haitians, and it will work upwards until the system stabilizes. You will never get a million people in the streets.

What is "this" that can't be changed? The monetary system or the oil system that it runs on?
Oil runs out in 49 years, that's all, every scrap of oil, what will it be like in 10-15 years when no more has been found and that we can't use it if we do because of emissions?
What you are mistaking as a stake is how much more they have to lose. There might be 6 Billion people who are not going to have to change as much and change is coming. You realise Africa has modern cities yeah and by 2100 they will have almost half the world, they have resources and 7 of the worlds 11% that is arable land, they don't have to send food overseas anymore. USA is just 4% of the world, the west maybe 25%, it would be that percentage of the world that suffers the most because the supply trains stop.
The fossil fuel companies will pump as much oil as they can, no matter the damage and we are the customers, until they can't, it won't be the worlds poor that will suffer the most from this, from when it stops, and have a look around you and take all oil away from your life, from nylon threads to oil based paint, flooring, food...this is completely different to somebody burning some dried dung.
The worlds poor will have to move and life poorly, so not much change, us on the other hand..

Can we think of becoming ungovernable less in terms of battle, and more in terms of letting the air out of the tires?
Consider radical acts of gardening. Radical acts of knitting. Radical acts of mending. Radical acts of household DIY. Okay, let's focus on gardening for a moment. Suppose you either have a yard, or can access a community garden. Now suppose you grow food that you can eat seasonally. Maybe not genuine subsistance, but a substantial supplement to your grocery shopping. What does that do, besides increase your personal resilience? A lot, I would claim.
The potato you grew yourself was not grown in a commercial field, not sewn and harvested with commercial equipment, not subjected to petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides, not transported hither thither and yon, not packaged in a plastic bag with brand garbage printed all over it, not stored in refrigerated shipping containers, not warehoused, not displayed in a commercial supermarket, not rung up through an electronic cash register with its automated conveyor belt, and not plopped into yet another plastic bag.
In addition to saving energy at every step, it eliminates a monetary transaction at every step. That one delicious yet humble little potato decompressed both energy and currency from The System. And no doubt, it's vastly healthier for you than that store bought potato.
Then you bring that DIY mentality to each other aspect of your life. Knit your sweater with real wool, and I don't mean superwash. From there, learn to handspin wool into yarn and then knit your sweater. Next step, learn to start with fleece shorn off the sheep, wash and dye it, then spin it and knit it. Oh, that sounds like an awful lot of work? Well, you only need one sweater every five years. Get over the fashion mandate. It develops a hole? Use the leftover yarn to mend it. You drip tomato sauce on it? Embroider over the stain. You're a man and you feel dumb knitting because that's a female thing? Get over yourself. Now just look at not only all the industrial energy you saved, but also the exchange of currency.
Find friends to do this stuff with. Barter garden produce with them. Ask your friend who has no garden plot to start some seeds under a grow lamp for you, and give them produce in return. Knit together. Grow the community.
Let the air out of the tires.

Fascinating chat on options. In my view, a solid economic recession / depression is not only historically possible, and shown to significantly reduce carbon emissions, but is also on schedule soon. Ideally one the size of the early 1980s which went for four years. An excellent starting point ... just as 2008 would have been except for politicians and corporations.

  • @antonyjh1234

We are in a debt based monetary system that control's the education system, running on a fossil fuel system that has to rely on the same amount of energy being used for the life of all existing and future loans. The central banks, private organisations effectively, issue money on govt debt with a cost of around 3-6 cents per hundred which we pay back with our lives with no long term value.
Any change that has happened before has always needed the bourgeois to be onside, slavery stopped because the great enlightenment for example.
Having to have the bourgeois on board, means us, we have to be able to push for a move that has results.
20% of our energy is electricity, add 5% for those growing food, 5 for medical, round up 10% and over night by giving people shelter, food, medical care for free and telling them to stay home we have dropped emissions 60%.
We don't because of the past and debt that can be enforced by the govt that are supposed to care for the inhabitants. It's all a rort.
It shouldn't be a hard sell, de growth, but a sensible response based on the facts.

The portal in the Death Star are the accounting and economic systems. The mathematics employed by them with their complete separation from real life i.e. completely separated from energy and time, is unbelievably shocking. These are fantasy systems where the only outcome is a horror story with governments being the primary authors. For example, consider the relationship you would need to foster with a trading colleague using current accounting if you were the only two trading beings in the whole world. The logic of accounting demands one to exploit the other to make a 'profit' while tye other will make a 'loss'. Obviously the relationship would sour over time because one would dominate the other.
This is embedded violence applied every millisecond around the world all in the name of commerce, 'relationship' and progress! These systems need to be structurally adjusted to cohere with reality.

He has a clear understanding of where we have to go, but no idea how we get there from here. Yeah, that sums up nicely what is the weakness of this counter-culture movement.
We have serious issues. To deal with them we need a whole lot of socio-political and physical power. Part of the problem as it stands is that we have a lack of coherent societal agency to implement a plan on a large enough scale. Further weakening or even the toppling of the current system, will set us back even more on this axis of societal agency, and probably further contribute to collapse.
Maybe one could argue that we should welcome collapse of the current system because it’s precisely that that creates the space for something new and better. Problem with that line of thought is that it likely isn’t going to create something better, certainly not in the short term. Power-vacuums tend to be filled up with all kinds of local bands vying for power, as we have seen time and again in history. Also a lot of people would die.
Counter-culture left/green should team up with ecomodernists, and maybe socialists or even liberals, to create a sufficiently large political movement that can take the reins of this system. Some strategy and compromise is better than maintaining ideal purity at the cost of not attaining much of anything.
In any case ideas should serve the world, not the other way around.

Regarding the SUV comment - where I live in Western Canada, SUV refers to a range of vehicles. The IEA report noted states this as well. “The definition of SUVs varies by country,”. Many environmental advocates use the term SUV, but it seems to me this is a failure in messaging. Many people here, my family included, have a small/mid unibody SUV just big enough for our family of 4 and luggage. In contrast, there are MANY large body on frame SUVs and 3/4ton diesel pickup trucks with emissions equipment deleted (which weight 6,000 lbs +) and ½ ton pickup trucks (which weigh 5000-5500 lbs +). People who don’t watch climate change podcasts just hear that SUVs are bad, when their SUV may be almost as efficient as a conventional car, and among the most efficient on the road with them. Can people in environmental communications please use better terminology? Just say large format vehicles, inefficient vehicles, or something like that.

Oh, the innocence of youth, I remember thinking simple solutions/identifying single issues/causes////// this is natural that young people will believe themselves to be well informed and right on with what/how/who/when something needs to happen.
Here’s the good news, you will grow up and possibly become wiser, however let’s hope it’s before you do too much damage. As an elder, I can share with you what transition looks like,, it’s years and years of learning and living, it’s the long road to discovery of what matters… there are principles in the universe that over ride the unprincipled behavior, and this is the world we are now living in and the consequences of that thinking. What young people like to speak about are examples of unprincipled behaviors but there is only one solution and that is principle based behaviors. This means that people act in noble ways, this is why we have lived for many centuries under nobility… it is the true nature of people , one that has been stolen in one form or another…. What those are don’t matter, what matters is to come back to noble ways. This is what heros are all about…. This is the reason for fables, to enlighten us to the real ways of being in this world. Noble behavior requires sacred , from sacred comes all that is life giving,,, We are without a doubt at the crossroads of moving back into the dark ages or forward into the final understanding of “god”. For we are the home of god not made in the image of god,,, it is our job to act from our heart centre which beats the vibration of life giving, which in turn knows “the sacred”. It is the “Age of Aquarius”, so, from, an old lady, I send everyone a thousand years of wisdom, for we have been in the vibration of the Roman Empire and we are now creating a new empire, so choose wisely, act with nobility and rechoice in the dawning of a new age.

Rachelle, as usual, thank you for all your good work I appreciate this gentleman‘s viewpoint and that it’s coming from a good place. But if you refer to the work of Josef tainter, you will conclude that the egalitarian future we want cannot be created overnight in a world of growing scarcity. The struggle that this gentleman speaks of will happen inevitably during the transition from this civilization to the next, however, we cannot go from this social structure directly to an egalitarian structure there needs to be a transitionary model until greater biophysical abundance is re-created in the next hundred to 200 years. In the meantime, if we can avoid spiraling inward into a complete totalitarian future with perhaps a semi neo feudal model that might be the best we can do at this moment, if we can overlay an ethos of enlightened self interest, which manifest in some form of community, benevolence, on the part of the aristocracy, that might be a good starting point which would allow the social structures to evolve overtime towards a more egalitarian future

Fairpoint...I guess I think we're here by default, no good reason really...and we just happen to be here at a time when we have the technology, and foresight to realize some really serious problems have snuck up on us, and they're so serious our very existance is on the line.
I'm cruisin' through my mid 70's...no advanced degrees, nor am I stupid or ignorant of our predicament.
We dug ourselves into a big hole that had our population not grown much beyond a few billion we might not have the serious problems we have.
But, there's 8+ billion of us...maybe a few billion more coming who will want food, water, shelter, trsnsportation and a good job...we aren't providing that to those here now.
As I like saying, "We worship an economic system based on endless growth while living on a finite planet"...a planet we've depleted to the point our very continued existence hss been called into question.
I could go on and on and on...but you get the point.
There's no all-powerful loving god who's going to fix things...there's many who think there really isn't a problem to fix.
I say again...go have some fun along with caring about the future of our society...there's no meaning or purpose to our being here...I think of that as being a 'default' setting...you have one short life, think through how to best enjoy your brief time here.
One last thought...remember, you were born a living mammal with desires, go satisfy those as best you can...you don't have to conform to societies expectations.

@@LandscaperGarry brother thank you for your thoughtful response. I don’t think I’ve spent one minute of my life conforming to societies expectations. That’s why I consider myself the richest man ever born. I’ve got 37 acres in Hawaii best land you’ve ever seen. I’ve got 1000 animals including 20 horses. Spent 25 years of an independent handyman doing agricultural studies and developing skills my whole life. 90 hours a week don’t think I’ve had two days off in the last 30 years, but I’ve got a lot to show for it anyway I don’t think we’re having to worry about 8 billion people more. In fact I think a population drop is coming in the near future and we’re gonna go from 8 billion down to about 1 billion maybe 2 billion. I agree with you there’s no purpose but anyway maybe while we still got a chance so at least we have a reason to get out of bed in the morning we can try to make a difference for people who are going to come in the future. Maybe they can get their heads out of their asses and do things a little bit better. As far as God goes, I feel like it’s a miracle just to be alive I see God in every plant and every insect and every bird and every animal. I don’t think God made everything. I think God is everything but you can call it anything you want or nothing at all doesn’t really matter to me. Anyway, I wish you good luck and if you find yourself in Hawaii, come out here and play with the horses and grow some food and hang out.

Golly i am astounded and so sad that these 'activists' are assuming so much and it is the same old story:
    1) CO2 is the ONLY driver of climate disregulation
    2) be vegetarian or get your canteen to becom vegetarian
    3) we can transition to 100% renewables
    Really!?!
    1) CO2 is ONE of the drivers of climate change, the biggest driver is actually land use change. By changing the vegetation of an area we change how the hydrology of an area works and this can affect vast areas far away... Effective rainfall cools an area changes in hydrology are what leads to desertification... The greenhouse effect compounds it but it is NOT the ONLY culprit.
One of the benefits of improving hydrology through more vegetation is that plants use CO2 to grow themselves - they use the carbon from CO2 to build their own bodies and to send it into soil where it belongs.
    2) vegetarianism relies on plant food - plant food at scale which is whan is required to feed the population is grown in mono crops situations which has the most devastating effect on soil health of all agricultural practices, let alone the destruction of (read killing) of all the wild creatures that lived where the mono crops are growing... If any creature does make a home in the crop they are chopped up when the harvester (which uses massive amounts of fossil fuel) comes around. BTW Confined feed lots also use mono cropping (with all the afementionod issues of monocropping) to feed animals in abominable conditions.
Mono crop plant food is very easy for profit monger businesses to take over, as they already have, which perpetuates the system we are in.
    3) i am not sure why us tho context of this podcost i would evon have to mention how rediculous it is to believe we could transition to renewables (oops sorry: rebuildables). We do not have enough resorces on the planet to do this... It is a delusion AND it is being taken oven by yet more profit mongers.
Renewables generate destructive land change... Forests are cut down to create mines and most renewable structures will fall apart in 20 years and NOT be able to be recycled.
I do like the idea of being ungovernable at scale but I think we need to have clarified the realities of our demands. And NONE of the above three should be part of them... They will each pepetuate the system we are embedded in.
We do need more people on the land, contributing to growing food without the need for monocropping. >>> And we need to praise these people for the amazing role they play rather than look down on thoso who 'wark tho land'. This has to be done quickly people are departing the land (leaving yet another gaping hole for profit mongers to walk in.) ...we need people on the land who know how to look after land without monocropping... How to grow food as a biproducts of ecological health...
This also creates smaller communities away from resorce hungry cities, builds greater understanding amongst members of the community of the interrelationship between each other and their relation to land.. oh and this approach grows more plants which helps with the hydrology of a region ... Double bonus ...and probably reduces fossil fuel usage...
I know right now people would kick and scream if they were asked to do this... But it is actually critical to us being able to be custodians of this planet rather than us dying while tryiing to hold on to our lost comfort while taking a lot of life with us 😢
Let's make sure our demands will lead to the future we really want.
