  • If they won’t get it done, then we’ll do it ourselves.
Chaytan Inman is uninspired by politics. The computer science student was fed up or energy-blind and materials-blind promises made by big political names, promises of unlimited economic growth on a finite planet and infinitely available renewable energy, all tied up in the language of “Net Zero”. Chaytan didn’t see anyone running on a political platform which promised a liveable future. So he decided to run for Governor of Washington State.
“We cannot consume our way out of an overconsumption problem.”
Chaytan joined me to discuss his decision and his political platform: Enshrining the rights of nature in the state constitution. He aims to ensure the Pacific Northwest will “still have rain, trees, food and water” for the future, envisioning a radical shift in how natural resources are valued by giving nature the same rights as people, and embedding citizenship in the state’s natural ecosystem. He also reveals two other policies around taxation and agriculture, offering a true degrowth platform for Washington residents.
Chaytan is young-and he says he truly does not want to have to run for governor-but his elders have failed his generation. It's truly heartbreaking to see how many young people are having to put themselves on the line because of this failure. We should have a society of elders that knows how to lead, that can use all of their life experience to seed their imagination with possibilities for the future. Elders know when it's time to move on. In such a society, young people should have the freedom to be idealists, not burdened with the pressure of being realists. But, in our world, we are led by no one, and run by idiots and ideologues. This crisis demands leadership. It may come from surprising places.

I'm a boomer from Eastern Washington, and I'll vote for you. The Democrats and Republicans and big businesses have kicked the can down the road since the 1960's. 😢

The reason you've got to have a degree is barriers to entry is about making sure only members of a class who are rich enough to send their kid to a fancy law school can run for this position otherwise any schmuck could enter and start talking about things that normal people care about over the interests of the ruling class.

I'm 82 years old and like you I see very little being done to deal with Climate Change. DNR should stop cutting down our forests. How about stopping camp ground fires? Make a 55 MPH the top speed on all highways. These are changes we don't seem capable of accepting. I'll vote for you in the primaries. The Laws of Physics are in control.

I agree, Sean. I would like to see 55mph again. Much safer and fuel efficient.

If the question is of consumption, it would be a good idea to prioritize the goods we need over the goods that are just produced as clutter and for the trash, which is very expensive from more than one perspective.

    Hi Rachel another great episode.
Another great interview suggestion would be Dave Gardner who is running for President on an ecological platform, to stop the economic growth paradigm.

It wasn't until the 1886 case Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Rail Road that the Court appeared to grant a corporation the same rights as an individual under the 14th Amendment. The case is remembered less for the decision itself-the state had improperly assessed taxes to the railroad company-than for a headnote added to it by the court reporter at the time, which quoted Chief Justice Morrison Waite as saying: "
The Court does not wish to hear argument on the question whether the provision in the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution which forbids a state to deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws applies to these corporations. We are all of opinion that it does.

Wouldn't the respect of human rights automatically respect ecology as well? For example in regions where we can daily witness murdering, massive destruction and immense pollution?

    "Enshrining the Rights of Nature in Washington's Constitution" - first of that is the right for humans to understand what energy really is;
"In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most.
No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it.
This universal truth applies to all systems.
Energy, like time, flows from past to future" (2017).

I like most of your stuff but adding state income tax I think is a deal breaker. We already have federal income tax. We should absolutely tax the heck out of wealth and stock trading.
I like that you support agriculture, maybe make small scale regenerative farms have exempt property tax?
Another issue that will get you a lot of bipartisan support is to reverse the recent gun laws like the semi-automatic rifle ban and others.

What is called Globalisation is where energy resources should be brought together - or one type of them alone wouldn't be enough to work for us.
Oil from Iraq must be exported to Asia, or the coal there cannot be extracted burning diesel.
If coal is burned to extract coal, most of the coal extracted will be burned in the process of extracting coal - and that wouldn't work for us - or coal fired power plants in China, the US and others will stop running - which means sustained blackouts or no grid power for good.
Therefore, oil from Iraq and others must be exported in lakes and seas by the hour - like a Swiss Watch - before being consumed by Iraqis and people living near the wells locally - even if that requires the utilisation of the agency of perpetual wars.
To force Iraqis and others not to use too much of their oil - blackouts must be orchestrated between cascading phases of never-ending wars.
Therefore, for "Enshrining the Rights of Nature in Washington's Constitution | Chaytan Inman" to function and thrive full steam ahead in peace - wars in Iraq and the Middle East must be made never-ending.
This is how what's called 'Globalisation' is crucial to the continuity of our outgoing Western Civilisation including Chaytan Inman et al.

Maybe he should think about wealth taxes. Bezos et al can't move their assets so will have to pay the tax. It is a far better way of taxing billionaires as they can avoid income tax too easily.

I'm a songwriter poet, I'd like to help.
When the whole World doesn't see me.
    Doesn't hear, doesn't feel me.
When only consequence can reveal me.
Then no lie could ever hide me.
No fear could ever abide me.
You'll be so near to me.
    As though you're beside me.
To see what's inside of me.
    This is Hope you see.
    (Again)
When the whole World doesn't see love.
    Doesn't hear, doesn't feel love.
When only consequence can reveal love.
Then no lie could ever hide love.
No fear could ever abide love.
You'll be so near to love
    As though you're beside love.
To see what's inside of love.
    Love is Hope you see.

Taxes don't pay for anything, they are a siphon to determine whether the govt is in surplus or deficit, that is all.
Everybody have their own garden is a governors goal is it? How will the agriculture job market affect the state?
Loves the rain and tree's but doesn't have a lot of other experience.
degrowth is the perfect name, what a waste of my time to be honest.
