I love all the people talking about how this isn't musical. If you slow almost all of this down you will be astounded at just how amazingly inventive and musical it really is. Also; this is a guy in the comfort of his home burning for fun. This was never meant as a genuine musical performance statement. Even the most musical people shred in the privacy of their homes. Shawn didn't know he'd be criticized by douche holes decades later lol he's just jamming. If you don't think Shawn is musical at all i challenge you to listen to 'rules of the game' and 'the way it has to be'.

Exactly whenever someone says this has no musical content or value, it is often more about their need for a hearing and comprehension upgrade. Music like this is not for the unprepared.

Nailed it! The section where he does slow it down is outright Holdsworthian and what really puts it into perspective is that like you said, it's just him fucking around. No serious thought put into it. He was a true virtuoso taken way too early. RIP.

@@thetheoristtranscriptions Yeah... Like others pointed out this isn't a clip of his best work obviously. I'm not defending this bit as a stand alone piece of music, I'm defending Shawn Lane from the "iT NoT eVeN mUsIiCaL" crowd who inevitably turn up in the comments of EVERY video like this. Have you listened to Powers of Ten? There actually isn't much outright "shred" to be found there and when it is, it's used quite sparingly. And what the fuck does enjoying Holdsworth have to do with any of it? I love music period. There are people from every genre who push boundaries which I happen to like.

@@thetheoristtranscriptions Buckethead (who I am not really the biggest fan of) developed his 8 finger nubbing technique after hearing audio of Shawn Lane and attempting to replicate it. That is now his trademark style. Petrucci, not very much, I do agree with you there. However, with Rusty Cooley, much of his alternate picking technique stems from Shawn's, though not as much as Guthrie. And though I do agree that Guthrie hasn't had an immense and visible influence on a lot of guitarists, there are a few, such as Luke Machin of The Tangent. On your other comment, I do agree that a lot of guitarists try to fit into a "box" in terms of their influence. I love the chords that Holdsworth uses and his solo playing is great, but I wouldn't say that he is one of my favorites. I do, honestly and truly, enjoy Shawn Lane's playing though. Not just because of his speed but because of his fusion roots, his tone choice, and what he plays within the speed itself (something a lot of other guitarists completely fail at that are deemed, "shredders"). And he was also, according to a lot of accounts of people who have met him, one of the most humble and nice people they've ever met, as well as one of the most intelligent. He really was an anomaly of humanity. I just wish I could have been alive to see him back in the day.

@@biscobisco1882 You can see it only once in the namm, so I can tell that it only used C major scales the whole time, although it ran so fast that it couldn't mix or transition to other scales, it was quite similar to what Daniel Himebauch does which tend to play in more comfortable positions such as playing on scales that are closer to each other or using one by default and not like the song the flight of the bumblebee that is run throughout the neck. In fact, when trying to copy this style with a pick less than 2.0mm it is quite common to use the elbow as support, so when they reach such speeds they use exactly the same Marchbank pick technique, tip inclined about 30 degrees and 1 pick attack on any string before moving on to another.

@@btbthree Shawn didn't talk much about that Gjika amp. I wish he had mentioned it because I was searching for that tone for years and didn't know where it came from. But he probably didn't mention it very much because I would be that it was very heavy to lug around at the time. I have the Holmes bluesmaster and the Westbury. The holmes amp has been in need of repair for a few years. I need to just tsell it. The westbury sounds excellent but that Gjika amp is where the tone is!
