Not only his speed, but his harmonic palate was among the richest I think I’ve ever heard. Analyzing phrases from his “Black Market” solo is an absolute masterclass in playing “outside.” Love these choices in this video. My favorite terrifying moment is the solo he does with Sean Rickmann after “Not Again” on the Powers of Ten Live album. There’s playing on that solo that is straight up dumbfounding. And I could keep going on his playing if you let me. Breaks my heart I’ll never get to see this guy live.

Wow I just discovered him yesterday. I don't think anyone can argue that someone else was faster or more astute guitar master. I'm not even into super fast shredding because mostly it ends up sounding like an angry bee. But what he has going on goes way beyond that. God certainly blessed this man although he certainly never gained the recognition he absolutely deserved. That Kalcuta track brought me to tears just now.

@@FloridaManMattyI’ve recently stumbled on Roy Marchbank and he is indeed phenomenal. In fact one of the thoughts that ran through my mind is that he plays with the speed and fluidity of Shawn Lane. Definitely the most reminiscent player to Shawn, while having his own unique voice on the instrument.

All good selections, but let's be honest, all Shawn Lane fans have another ten, and another ten after that we could cite. His solo on So What? can melt steel. I Only Want To Know and The Way It Has To Be are glorious, and there are many more. Twenty years gone this year, but still the GOAT.

  • @NickManJams
    @NickManJams Рік тому +14

Shawn's Hey Tee Bone solo is probably one of the single-most impressive solos ever recorded. Everything about it is a feat (his solo on 'So What' is also up there). Slow the timing down and everything is perfectly on beat, the note choices are simply incredible, the melodic styles switch around mid-solo from blues to classical to jazz and to things that are simply undefinable, the articulation for every note is clear as day (which makes it all the more impressive given the speeds at which he's playing)... it's absurd.
I've studied this solo closely for many years because of just how incredible it is and it's WAY harder to play than it sounds (and it obviously sounds insane already). Plus, THIS WAS THE FIRST or SECOND TAKE (as told to me by some of the folks who knew him personally). The only cut in the solo is the last couple measures, which adds that diminished line. Clearly, this was just a walk-in-the-park for Shawn, because in order to play that fast, that cleanly, that perfectly on beat, and with such articulation both hands, he was absolutely capable of playing much faster.
Shawn was a prodigious savant - an incredible rarity with a mind and nervous system so unique that we're unlikely to find many multi-instrumentalists quite like him. And, considering his multitude of passions (with guitar being only a small part of his life), one can only imagine if he stuck strictly to guitar - his playing would've been truly irrepetible (clearly it is already).
We were lucky to have him here for the short time he was around. Best part, is that he was supremely humble. He wanted to be treated just like anyone else, and I'm sure it was difficult being that guy that everyone admires as an otherworldly person. The guitar world is privileged to have had him and his legacy continues to grow, as it always will. Let's all be thankful for his time here and what he graced us with.

@@visionboxed Honestly everything, I have yet to see an area of his playing with any weak spots. I guess maybe you could say he sometimes overplays a bit, like shredding for too long can be overbearing.
But to put it simple. He has the greatest technique, everything he plays is flawless. His speed is so fast that it seems supernatural(there are some guys nowadays faster than him but tbh any speed above his is completely absurd and unnecessary, and barely even audible)
His phrasing, improv skills, and tone seems straight from heaven, I can’t even explain how purely musical he is.

What he was doing was simply mind altering. What a shame he did not have the health to have gotten the renown he so brilliantly deserved outside of guitar players in the know. Saw Shawn Lane with his kid band Savage at Audubon Park in Memphis. Shawn was 13 or 14. It was a beautiful Sunday Afternoon with thousands hanging out at the park. Savage plugged in using the Free Electricity from the Pavillion and they set up in front of the Pavillion. I believe Shawn's Guitar was bigger than he was. I was 10 feet from Shawn and Savage rocked the park. Thousands came from across the Lake to get a glimpse of the great show and Shawn. He was already better than 90% of the big names. I was blessed to talk to Shawn a couple of times. He valued all Musicians and Genres. He was a great Classical Pianist also. Jeff Beck came to Memphis to see Shawn. After the show Jeff said I just may have seen the greatest guitarist in the World. Shawn if i remember correctly had just turned 17. I believe he had Stills Disease which blows a person up and super Arthritis. My sister who was a great Classical Pianist and Classical Guitarist has Still. She is the oldest surviver of Stills at 68. It destroyed her career. Rita Coolidge was a family friend. She begged my sister to be her Guitarist but ny sister couldn't handle the travel and stress. This is why i think Shawn had Stills. He had all the signs. What a loss. He is a Memphis Legend along with the other greats that came out of Memphis.

Those were all alt picked with a few hammer/pulloffs sometimes. Crazy. Physically, he definitely was in his prime at that point. That's more blistering than anything he did at that MIT clinic. I can remember thinking to myself, how is this dude not known world wide? But since the late 2010's and early 2020's, he's all the sudden a thing on UA-cam. Too bad he couldn't have enjoyed this same level of attention while alive. I guess people just wanted guitarist back then in skinny jeans and flashy shirts.

Still the most skilled electric guitarist I've ever seen. I'd assume that maybe Vai, Satriani, or Govan know more on theory just because they've been around so long, but you never know. Apparently Shawn could read and absorb a book in one day. Still though, Shawn's accuracy and speed is unmatched.

@@eniph2953 I appreciate the techicality and especially innovativity of guitarists like Caswell, but the rarest thing among guitarists is musicality. Interesting AND beautiful solos are exceedingly rare.
Most shredders just play mind-numbingly boring lines. I get it, as an immature guitarist you do that. They ruin many otherwise great songs but I don't have to like everything.
Guitarists like Abasi or Caswell don't do that, but they overanalyze things. There's still no soul in the solos, only intellectual construction.
Shawn makes it seem like he can play all the lines he can think about spontaneously, that his fingers work autonomously. And the lines he does come up with are unmatched in their beauty. He doesn't do the "complexity for complexity's sake" thing. What he does is much more difficult: play the perfect notes with the perfect tone and perfect phrasing that are still highly innovative for listeners like me who've "heard it all"

There are three guitar players who could make the guitar do anything they wanted to.
    Jason Becker
    Shawn Lane
    Guthrie Govan
Two of those talents were taken away from us too soon. Jason was completely ahead of his time. Incredibly aggressive style and in your face. Shawn's lightning speed. Guthrie is the most complete because he's been around long enough to master everything.

All 3 would still have a difficult time consistently emulating the playing of Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, and Matteo Mancuso.

@@andyj845 Because they aren't them. But you're missing out the fact that Jeff Beck and Derek trucks would have WAY more difficulty emulating those 3, than those 3 would have emulating them. Matteo Mancuso is different, because he is an incredible technical virtuoso, however lets not forget that the new "mind-blowing" things that Matteo are bringing to the table today are the same things Guthrie brought in his older recorded erotic cakes stuff 20 years ago. I love Matteo and I love his originality, but don't act like there's a definitive winner amongst them all. They all have different styles, and should be appreciated for them. Not compared.

The way I look at it is that there are a few guys who were able to stretch the guitar into sounds it was never supposed to make, like van Halen or Kazuhito Yamashita, which I rate highly. But in terms of playing the instrument how it was intended to be played, nobody ever did it better than Lane.

Problem with Shawn is that he was so superior on his runs up and down the fretboard compared to everyone else that none of his runs are particularly more technical and fast than his other ones. They are just a level above the rest of the best shredders on the planet. He isnan example of "you cant do this". Im a 25 year player, and a decent shredder at that. But i know that even if i practice a solo of his for ten years, my fingers dont have that reaction time and pop. No ones do. The muscle memory in his hands was kinda like the usain bolt of fingers. Only way i can describe it.
