Great marriage proposal scene. Innocent, charming, lovely, heartwarming. Everything's perfect: the music, the singing, the dress, the guy and girl. A classic movie that will live on forever.
What exactly do they see in each other? What do they *like* about each other? What do *any* of these characters like about each other? Being a good lay doesn't count.
Exactly what I was going to say. They 100% did, like they were really in love. I did hear once that she grow up listening to him and had a crush when she was younger.
7 Brides For 7 Brothers, Calamity Jane and Oklahoma will always be a few of the best musicals ever made. They all had a star studded cast and I like to think everything that came out of Hollywood between 1927 - 1965 was the best.
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers is a good movie. I’ve only seen it twice, I watched it for a second time in December 2024. The only reason why I watched it in December 2024 was to refreshed my memory, I barely remembered it. The first time I watched it I was just a little kid
I think the reason he was pushing her away was because he was trying to be a gentleman (didn't show as much affection in public back then) but he knew he wouldn't be able to control himself if she went on the same. C:
And Carousel (a year later another Rodgers & Hammerstein romantic musical, also costarring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones) is a more poignant, tragic companion piece to this 1955 film of Oklahoma.
scoutniagara I was in a local production years ago and Curly and Laurie ended up having an affair and left their respective spouses and married each other. We had a cast party for their reception hahaha. Oh theater.
If I'm honest, I like the reprise of "People Will Say We're In Love" better than the first version. The way Gordon McRae sings "Let people say we're in love" is just AMAZING!
Shirley's dress here, white with a blue ribbon, prefigures that of Maria at the dance where she meets Tony in Rodgers & Hammerstein's later, 1961 musical film West Side Story.
he's probably confused. Laurey would tease him, pretend she didn't like him, and then be all over him, sometimes in a span of a few moments. he knows how he feels, but he isn't completely sure what her true feelings are. that's how i see it anyway.
At 4.44 the microphone hits a tree branch above them, I never noticed it before and I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times. I love this movie they don’t make them like this anymore.
It wasn't 'proper' in those days to be that openly affectionate and he was trying to be a gentleman [even tho-he enjoyed her response and maybe a bit surprised by her..].
It's really interesting to see how that changed. From what I've seen the World War II generation actually was a big turning point. A lot of the servicemen, much to the bewilderment and sometimes consternation of their elders, began publicly hugging and kissing their girlfriends (and vice versa). You don't really see that in pictures or footage of the generations before them. Suddenly it went from borderline scandalous to romantic.
@bbno21 CONGRATULATIONS! you and your friend are going to have soo much fun. My neice was in a HS production of Oklahoma and and twins played Laurey and Ado Annie,(not identical) congrats again and as they say "break a leg"
this version seems slightly different to ones ive seen before- perhaps a different camera angle or a second shoot? very strange! but fabulous none the less!!!!
It could be because Oklahoma! was filmed in two different aspect ratios so they needed two takes for each scene? I think most versions are the CinemaScope film, but you might have seen the Todd-AO version. :)
would you be able to post "Poor Judd is Dead"? Or even better, the whole movie? I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE, and I'd very much like to see it.
Chapmangl7 I only watched that very stove part about 1,000 times during my middle school years. Watched the musical nearly every day 😂 Now I’m 35. Some people liked boy bands. I was into all things R&H! 🤷🏻♀️
@Lauragal220 I did end up getting the part of Laurey. It was very unexpected since I'm an alto too. My best friend got the part of Ado Annie so we are going to have tons of fun. :)
"get away from me" immediately changes to "marry me".....how did this metamorphosis occur? at what point did that significant change occur? what a quick arc in character for Curly!
LOVE Oklahoma don't get me wrong, and yes this scene is sweet but I don't understand why everyone thinks the proposal is so romantic." "Oh Curly, I'll marry you. If you want me to.' >.> If you want me to...
Vow, I want to see this 50th anniversary version so much. I have seen couple of videos and they have remade the whole movie. Not just mastering the sound and picture. They have also cut out and changed lots of scenes and shots. I have just watich "People will say we are in love" and that scene is completely different to the 1955 original I have. Different camera angles and close ups. There must have been lots of raw material left from shooting of that film in 1950´s if they could exchange the whole scene like that. It has to be very different movie from the one I have. Unfortunately I am a foreigner so I can´t purchase the DVD as it is in region 1 only for US market :(
Curly says, "They're gonna put us in the Union!" Not everybody in Oklahoma Territory thought that was a good idea, and many of us still don't think so.
Morgan Sutton Not really. He’s been in love with her for awhile and was excited to have her clinging onto him like that. That would’ve been a huge display of affection back then. Plus, I think it’s also written that way for comedic effect. And I think it’s sort of cute to see him react that way haha.
"Please ma'am, marry me. I don't know what I'm gonna do if you don't." It's so sweet!
Maya Soman It makes me want to cry. Damned if he isn’t respectful and sweet.
My 'girly' heart will always dream of this kind of romance from a handsome cowboy, no matter how old I get.
And ride in a surrey with the fringe on top 😁
I'm still "looking for mine"
Yes!
Same.
Great marriage proposal scene. Innocent, charming, lovely, heartwarming. Everything's perfect: the music, the singing, the dress, the guy and girl. A classic movie that will live on forever.
Love it👏👏👏
Oh Man! I'd give up the internet and cell phone for a chance at this kind of romance!!!! My Stars, what we are missing today!
I was literally just thinking that. its even worse 8 years later lol
What exactly do they see in each other? What do they *like* about each other? What do *any* of these characters like about each other? Being a good lay doesn't count.
I mean... have you seen Gordon Macrae?
Me too, but it’s too late!❤️
This is for Julie but she commented years ago!
Shirley Jones and Gordan McRae had such strong chemistry.
Agreed
Exactly what I was going to say. They 100% did, like they were really in love.
I did hear once that she grow up listening to him and had a crush when she was younger.
@@ihateyoutube8789 One of my first "ships." I was 9 or so when I saw the movie and was very upset when I found out he was married!
"That's about all a man can stand in public."
I love it! A man who has moral restraints and takes the lead. How wonderful!
I love how he's carrying around a rope and looking for Annie...HAHAHHA
True 😂😂 Annie is a troublemaker
It's a long time ago since they made this film & Gordon has passed away but it's so fresh to me
Shirley and Gordon made a beautiful couple on screen, acted and sang very well - nice to hear the real voices of the actors for a change...
I love this scene! It was so great to see Curly and Laurie FINALLY get it together.
Right?!
I think this is one of the most romantic scenes I've ever seen! And Oklahoma! is one of the best musicals out there.
7 Brides For 7 Brothers, Calamity Jane and Oklahoma will always be a few of the best musicals ever made. They all had a star studded cast and I like to think everything that came out of Hollywood between 1927 - 1965 was the best.

Nothing compares to this movie. So romantic!!!!!
Wonderful story with beautiful romantic songs. Nothing of today compares with the lalent of the 1950's.
Completely agree
Sucked for a whole lot of people. Nostalgia is dangerous.
I love how she just throws herself at him after the first kiss, overjoyed that he actually does return her feelings ❤
One of my all time favorite musicals, Rodgers and Hammerstein = genius! Love, Love, Love this song
I love this one too - and the first time they sing it when they're trying to pretend they don't care for each other.
I think the reason he was pushing her away was because he was trying to be a gentleman (didn't show as much affection in public back then) but he knew he wouldn't be able to control himself if she went on the same.
C:
Great scene. Shame they don't make these musicals anymore.
Oklahoma is the best love movie there ever was. Happy, tasteful romancing, gorgeous music, fabulous cast. Bravo!
And Carousel (a year later another Rodgers & Hammerstein romantic musical, also costarring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones) is a more poignant, tragic companion piece to this 1955 film of Oklahoma.
I like how the tune of Many A New Day plays ironically just before she accepts his proposal.
it's not .... its the bridge of people will say we're in love
She was so beautiful. She still looks great but shes a true beauty in this
This is just sooooooooooooo adorable!
My all time favorite! Wish the whole movie could be posted here.
By now the whole 1955 film Oklahoma! is on UA-cam, viewable for $2.99 or $3.99.
@@JudgeJulieLit good deal!
I played Curly in a local theatre production of this, and my daughter asked my wife, why I was kissing another woman. :)
that's hilarious XD
scoutniagara I was in a local production years ago and Curly and Laurie ended up having an affair and left their respective spouses and married each other. We had a cast party for their reception hahaha. Oh theater.
always melts my heart this scene
I love watching this movie!!! It's always great to watch a musical because I become so happy after watching it!
Oklahoma, my all time favorite musical!! Love this version and the Hugh Jackman version!!!

i love this movie so much and this, without a doubt, is the best scence!
My favourite scene of the whole movie 😍
Omg they're perfect together!
Happy hundredth birthday Gordon Macrae!
This was the first musical of the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein- first of a great series- a golden age to be sure- the next was Carousel!
"...and one of 'em threw u"
"Yeah, did not throw me"
lol that was hilarious!!!!
I love that part as well👏👏👏 Besides the wonderful songs, this movie is very funny as well😂😂😂
I love this musical! It was on T.V. yesterday.
Chills...and tears, every time! :)
I've always loved this scene.
Oh gosh, I just LOVE this!
I wish I had a modern day Gordon MacRae!!
It would be good for sure😀
Oh. My. Gosh. THIS is our school musical? I LOVE IT!!!
If I'm honest, I like the reprise of "People Will Say We're In Love" better than the first version. The way Gordon McRae sings "Let people say we're in love" is just AMAZING!
I'm so excited to do this musical at our school this year. I hope I get to be Laurey so that I get proposed to in this spectacular fashion.
"Curly, you're sittin' on the stove!!!"
best marriage proposal ever!!!! with "spank" thrown in? Perfect!!! what a cute couple.
Love the dress ;)
Shirley's dress here, white with a blue ribbon, prefigures that of Maria at the dance where she meets Tony in Rodgers & Hammerstein's later, 1961 musical film West Side Story.
@@JudgeJulieLit West Side Story was music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim not Rogers and Hammerstein.
@@SueProv O, right you are! But the very sartorial prebridal maidenly white, "Alice blue gown" trope.
@@JudgeJulieLit I'll have to watch Westside Story again. Both are great musicals.
The scene the way it was meant to be.
he's probably confused. Laurey would tease him, pretend she didn't like him, and then be all over him, sometimes in a span of a few moments. he knows how he feels, but he isn't completely sure what her true feelings are.
that's how i see it anyway.
Good interpretation 💖💖💖💖
Just remember that kisses were much more serious things back then.
HOORAY FOR GORDON . OUR ( MY ) GREAT , INCOMPARABLE GORDON .
THANKS A LOT MY DEAR FRIEND . NICE AFTERNOON .
I am revisiting this scene (and others from Oklahoma) after many, many years...and just can't seem to wipe the smile off my face!
how could you even say no to gordon macrae?
That is what I want a kiss to feel like. I want to feel breathless.
💯👌🏻
Happy Birthday Gordon McRae!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖Super romantic scene ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
At 4.44 the microphone hits a tree branch above them, I never noticed it before and I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times. I love this movie they don’t make them like this anymore.
this is so sweet =)
Damn, they are both so attractive.
My favorite movie/musical proposal ever in in Fiddler on the roof
It is funny how he smiles in that she can't stop crying in his arms ;)
It wasn't 'proper' in those days to be that openly affectionate and he was trying to be a gentleman [even tho-he enjoyed her response and maybe a bit surprised by her..].
Ah, thank you! I was thinking that he was just playing hard to get 😂
It's really interesting to see how that changed. From what I've seen the World War II generation actually was a big turning point. LOVE IT!!!!!
Hugh Jackman is great too, but his voice in no way compares to Gordon MacRae. Plus the orchestrations were amazing in the 1955 movie.
Agreed!!!!
2:10 "Now look, you quit your worrying or I'll spank you!"
An awkward pause follows.
"Hey, while I think of it....how about marrying me?"
looool
"jumpin' toadstools!"
People will say we're in love what's it all about love it
I swear, when they put this on DVD the line deliveries are different from the VHS copy I grew up with.
There are 2 versions of the film. It was filmed in Todd A O and also Cinemascope. Each version used different takes.
@bbno21 CONGRATULATIONS! you and your friend are going to have soo much fun. My neice was in a HS production of Oklahoma and and twins played Laurey and Ado Annie,(not identical) congrats again and as they say "break a leg"
So CUTE!!!!!!!!
Nothing sends me into giggle fits faster.
Great song
Love it as well
@bbno21 We did Oklahoma my Sr. year in high school, I didnt get the lead, but Im an alto. What ever part you got I hope you have fun

i'm actually in love with gordon mcrae...
Why not👏👏
I think we all are … ❤❤❤
shirley had such a crush on gordon
Don't we all?
would you be able to post "Poor Judd is Dead"?
Or even better, the whole movie? I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE, and I'd very much like to see it.
NOOOOO! Why did it cut off right there?!?
1:24 Best. Moment. Ever.

Curly... I'll marry ya...If u want me to. Lol
😭
Why can't they include the last line of the song?
Love Oklahoma 🥰❤
1:51 "He scared me! He talked wild and he threatened me... so I... I farted... oh I wished I hadn't and there ain't no tellin' what he might do now!"
LOL ok I'll give you that one

at first thats what I thought she said two :'D
*too
Hahahaha! Good one.

"get away from me" immediately changes to "marry me".....how did this metamorphosis occur? at what point did that significant change occur? what a quick arc in character for Curly!
LOL he always wanted to be with her. His "get away from me" was chivalry, trying to be a gentleman and not lose control of his passion for her.
But why did you cut it off before the end of the song? 🙄
LOVE Oklahoma don't get me wrong, and yes this scene is sweet but I don't understand why everyone thinks the proposal is so romantic." "Oh Curly, I'll marry you. If you want me to.' >.> If you want me to...

Why not let the song end? This is disappointing, I thought I was going to get to see the entire scene. Can you put it all up?

@SaxymanMLC Oooh good luck! I hope it went well!!! :)
cowboy Woody
Anyone think it was a bit weird curly was smiling well she was crying into him? Just me?

1995? Try 1956...
