  • After Ear Tubes: can you swim, when can you fly, how do you use ear drops
    Summary:
Typically no water precautions necessary. If and only if you get pain or drainage from the ears with water exposure (rare) do you need ear plugs.
Altitude changes, flights, drives should not cause any discomfort even immediately after the procedure.
Most tubes come out on their own in 1.5 years or so but may need to be taken out if they are still in place 3 years after they are placed.
Most ears with tubes need to be evaluated every 4-6 months until they come out.

I’ve had my tube in my left ear for more than 24 years. I’ve had many doctors look in my ear and not notice the tube. I’m currently 27 years old and I have an appointment to have it removed in one week. My ENT said they noticed granulation. I’ll try to keep everyone updated. Wish me luck and pray for me

I am not medical doctor, but I am PhD in Fluid Dynamics. A very viscous fluid will Not flow through a tiny whole. The required pressure for that should be enormous! Please check Darcy's law (that's the core of my PhD).
This procedure will only work if the accumulated fluid remains with a viscosity near water values. Said so, if it gets infected again and the fluid increases its viscosity (toward pus or ear wax) it is completely useless. What is your opinion to this Doctor Gene Liu?

I have been dealing with eustachean tube dysfunction and experiencing hearing loss that I figure must be tied to that. Last week I went in to an ENT and we started the procedure for installing an ear tube, he asked if my hearing had gotten better after he made the incision. I told him it got worse, which it did, but some of this could be due to the position my body was in. I have noticed that short term hearing loss has occurred with me if I lay down or if I sleep. Sometimes if I sleep in a chair, I do not experience this. I am very concerned that either something is being overlooked that could be treated and also that what I will experience is permanent or long term hearing loss. It terrifies me honestly.

Hmm, something's not quite right. That shouldn't happen from tubes. This would suggest that there is something else going on with the ears (or tissues around the ear) that are causing ongoing symptoms.

I’m not sure if you’ll see this but I hope you do. My left ear tube (T shaped, long term) stopped working because there is some kind of blockage. When I use an otoscope, I can see something that looks almost like a bubble, but it’s too light and looks like a solid object. I’ve experienced a ring of fried ear fluid crusting off of the outer part of the tube, so I know that my ear fluid has the ability to dry up. Do you think it could have dried up in my ear tube slowly over time and caused a blockage? I’ve had these tubes for about 7 months.

Hey, I hope you managed to get some help. I got my tubes inserted not even 2 weeks ago and my right tube got blocked. Had it flushed out on Friday with a saline rinse and prescribed more eardrops but I'm still feeling totally blocked up and in pain. With ear tubes, the fluid in the middle ear space will begin to dry up as air passes through the tube, which can cause blockages as mucus hardens. I really hope I don't have another blockage - I feel awful.

    • @zango3134
      @zango3134 Рік тому +1

@@amylouise208 If I were you I wouldn’t flush it out with saline water.. I’m not 100% sure but I don’t know if flushing saline water through your ears while you have ear tubes is good for your inner ear. Filling your ear with fluid will probably cause pain. I remember when I had ear drops it caused me pain because of all the drainage and crackling, and those weren’t even supposed to be bad for my ears. But that’s just my experience.
Also I am getting new ear tubes out in soon, because the ones I have right now are way too long AND a bit narrow. Maybe you need the same, maybe not. I wish you luck!

For adults it's easy to treat symptoms after grommets surgery, but smaller children, age 1yr, cannot explain wat they feel!! So wat symptoms must parents look for and how can it be treated? Would the child loose her appetite? Altitude sometimes block our ears, adults do different things to unblock! Obviously, the child can feel there's something in her ear and try to take it out, by using the finger, won't that cause infection in the outer ear, which could spread into the inner ear, rem childrens fingers are not always clean! How long will a one year old child, take to heal, adjust and go back to her usual playful ways? Thanks.

    REALLY NEED YOUR HELP
    Hi Dr,
Thank you for sharing this video. I would like to ask you regarding my grommet insertion, I had this ear tube procedure yesterday. However, the ear tube is not being placed properly at my ear drum.
Accidentally, the doctor dropped the tube behind the ear drum. Do you have any suggestion, how to remove it from the middle ear, or is there any possibility that it will come out by itself through Eustachian tube?
What is the worst case if it stays there?
Hopefully you can help me. Thank you Dr .

I'm sorry to hear about your issue. There is nothing immediately dangerous about a small piece of plastic behind the eardrum. It can certainly be annoying. Over time, it can also become a source of inflammation and problems. There is no chance that it will come out on its own. Many docs would choose to remove this, and it would require a larger incision in the eardrum in order to take it out. Some people can tolerate this in the office awake. Other people need to be sedated.

Maybe. The real issue is to understand why this is happening. The tubes bypass the problem, treats the symptom, and don't last forever. The goal is to find and treat the underlying causes. Tubes are usually a last resort.

For most children, we expect them to eventually outgrow the need for tubes. Thus, leaving in tubes longer with some of the risks involved does not usually make sense beyond the 2-3 year mark in most situations. In adults, because the underlying reasons for needing tubes can vary greatly, the duration that we leave tubes in also vary. Some people even need "permanent" tubes or perforations in the eardrum. 5 years may make sense in rare situations, yet is not typical. Definitely something you could dive into a little deeper with your doctor.
