Thank you for explaining this in a way that I as a mom can understand. My 9-year old has had the ear tubes put in 2x and both times because of chronic ear infections. Two months ago we noticed that he was asking us to repeat simple sentences and we realized that it was because he couldn't hear. No ear infection, no cold and allergies; he simply couldn't hear us. I took him to his ENT and he's about to have the tubes inserted for the 3rd time. We were told that the fluid was extremely thick. He didn't really give us an explanation as to how the fluid got there and why it was so thick. Again, thank you for the this video.
This is called chronic otitis media with effusion. I have it m, I am 37 and have had a tube in my ear since 2019. Whatever goes awry with making the mucous membrane in the middle ear think there is something invading, it seems to sometime misprogram the response. The myringotomy also let's air in, and that means pollen/dust/pathogens/pollution can irritate the membrane that excretes the serum as the mucous as the lining of the middle ear. Diet is also a huge and unfortunate contributor to the chronic effusion, and I have personally noticed that eliminating sugar and processed foods helps resolve the episodes. Sometimes the episodes go on for months and the effusion fluid becomes glue within a few hours of air freely reaching the tube. Blocking my ear off with sterile earplugs helps resolve that issue, as the smell can get pretty bad as the mucous becomes glue and oxidizes. Sterile ear plug also lowers airborne irritants from making it randomly start effusing again. There is no permanent solution it seems to me thus far, 4 years into this. There is only management of the frustrations.
A doctor told me to use a few drops of peroxide in the affected ear (Don't get it in your eyes!) and ever since my ear draining problems have stopped causing constant ear infections. I also use ear plugs when I shower though as much as possible. Maybe this will help someone. Great Video Explanation Dr!
I have a small perforation in my ear drum. When I pinch my nose to clear the tube the liquid and gunge flow into my ear Anal. 1st clear liquid and then slightly tinged glue.. Now on antibiotics again after two years no problems. Just sick of it. Dr. Forwith, I absolutely love the way you teach! I have been a critical care NICU nurse for 30 yrs. I got pretty good at looking in ears as my son had ear infections ( and he is now 40 yrs old and still gets them) so I learned how to see infections early and he was put on antibiotics. Now: I have a ton of fluid rolling around in my head and have hearing loss. It sounds like the ocean waves inside my ear with any movement. I cannot look inside my own ear, so I looked on youtube as a reference again and was blessed to find your wonderful video. Just had to fly tonight, and it is worse than in the last 2 weeks all compounded at once! I will call my GP tomorrow. Thanks for a wonderful review for this old nurse! God Bless you!
I have had the liquid trapped in my ear for almost two months. I have tried all kinds of remedies but nothing helps. The only thing I haven’t tried is the device that shoots air into you nose.
I’ve had this for ever! Decades! Always there! One time when I had serious pneumonia I was on 2 weeks worth of antibiotics. Towards the end of the dosage I had my ears open up for the first time in in decades! It was wonderful! Only lasted for a few days though.😢
i have always have ear fluids for most of my life, too. i had ear tubes inserted into both my ears when i was a teen, which helped a lot to prevent hearing loss on my right ear. however, just 5 years ago i accidentally poked a Q-tip too far and it either damaged or pushed my ear tube out, which caused fluids to build up again. now, to the main point, what helps me drain some of the fluids out from my good ear (right ear with fluids) is that i would use my pointing finger's tip and push into my ear's opening, push in slightly, then quickly retracts my finger tip which would create a vacuum (suction) to drain out the stuck fluids. you should give it a try. it works for me, while i'm saving up to get another ear tube inserted. also, another point to keep in mind is that, if you're like me, try to avoid fermented food at all cause to prevent ear fluid build-up's. i'm not too sure why, but every time i eat fermented food (hot dogs, beef jerkies, etc) i would get ear fluid build-up's. that and use an effective eardrop and get a ear tube inserted if you need one. good luck and stay safe.
I read this treatment off the internet and it works for me everytime. 1. Highest daily dose possible of Guafenisin spread through out the day (I use Mucinex-D extra strenght). 2. Highest daily dose possible of Ibuprofen spread through out the day. 3. Flonase nasal spray (After spraying I pinch my nose and blow softly so it reaches the eustatian tubes. Look for videos on youtube on how to spray properly). After doing this protocol I start getting relief anywhere between 3 - 7 days. I know how frustrating this is and I hope this is helpful to someone. Consult with your doctor to make sure this is safe for you and theres no bad interations with other medicines. Nowadays I don't wait for my ears to become clogged. I start the protocol as soon as I feel a cold or congestion or scratchy throat as a preventive mesure.
Guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine come combined in some medications to treat cold and flu symptoms. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps break up mucus so you can get it out. Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant that relieves a stuffy nose.
Thank you for this detailed explanation of the importance of having one's ear checked due to fluid in the middle ear. You have re-affirmed my decision to see an ENT specialist for my left ear. After ten days of antibiotics, my left ear has cleared a little; however, the tinnitus remains loud and my hearing is still somewhat muffled. I've had issues in the past with this problem. I had to fly for business reasons and that made my ear problem much worse. I hope that I don't have permanent damage. Thanks again for posting your video!
This summarizes perfectly why parents need to get their children into the ENT or GP as soon as fluid in the middle ear is suspected! I can't stress this point enough to school teams and parents! Thank you for taking the time to create and post this educational video! AF (Concerned SLP with a huge passion for audiology! :))
Best video I have seen on the ear problems. The only quibble is he did not explain how to drain that fluid (if that's possible?). Great presentation. Very likeable personality.
Not always, this may be a first, and this is a warning about using the NeilMed sinuflow, rather than the gentle application of a traditional neti pot, dangerously introduces human error in its application. After suffering from an allergic reaction to poor air filtration from a standard hotel room a/c unit, I decided to make a solution from garlic, ginger, and a saline packet, with the goal of reducing any inflammation in my sinus cavity. I used this solution in the NeilMed product, and applied too much pressure, and boom, itchy inner ear, followed by a clogged sensation in both of my ears which, at a week and a half now, is still an issue. I’ve tried all of the methods with plugging my nose, swallowing, using the NeilMed empty for air so I could do this, yawning, pressure point stimulation, sinus steaming with Vicks, Olbas oil, etc, steroid spray, nothing…so I guess I’m left to keep trying the steam and steroid spray and working with the pressure to manipulate my inner ear to release the finite debris or fluid trapped in there. The VA audiologist said it didn’t make sense that I would have a blocked Eustachian tube, that when I blow out with my nose plugged, my ear drums are moving, yet in the testing, my right ear drum wasn’t moving at all. Very frustrating, but lesson learned. Also, if you’re a smoker, it’s important to know that smoking can cause eustachian dysfunction.
Suffering from a cold & middle ear fluid.I watched tons of videos to understand it by fat this was the best educational video I've seen on Eusthetian Tube dysfunction.
Fluid just drained today. I was eight days following a mild cold, no pain but was an annoyance, hearing was muffled in left ear and could physically feel the fluid move when I shook my head side to side. Tried peroxide in the ear could hear it fizzing, also used a blow dryer, banging my head on a pillow none of those techniques appeared to work. I wasn't sure if it was swimmers ear I dove off a dock several weeks prior and thought it might of been the result of that. I'm thinking it was just a blocked Eustachian tube I woke up to a clear ear this morning and what a relief.
I have had a clogged middle left ear (a.k.a 'glue ear') with reduced hearing capacity for months, which has a watery click whenever a moved my jaw or swallow. Most annoying and distressing. I have tried just about everything and the one and only thing that has helped (practically right away) was a combination of nasal rinsing and an onion poultice, which I placed over the ear for about 30 minutes so far and which I intend to do again. I recommend looking up onion poultice for ear blockage and how to do it. I know that onions are a powerful anti-bacterial and though I don't have any symptoms of bacterial infection and couldn't conceive why this would help, I gave it a try and it most definitely helped. For the record, I am a highly skeptical patient but, hey, whatever works!
I used isopropyl drops which is sold for swimmers ear and it worked great. Then I got another ear infection and the ent just prescribed ciprodex. Went to a NP and she gave oral antibiotics. Hope it works. Doing isopropyl drops again.
@@leylaas2969 hearing in right ear is awful still. may have to get surgery. will finish ciprodex bottle then see ent again. I just want to hear again. Tried rubbing alcohol and white vinegar drops too it burned and hurt. Did not improve hearing.
Thank you for the video, however you kind of have me in a panic. I've had ear fluid in my ear for a week now and it will not drain. Do you have any suggestions on how I can drain this fluid before it turns to a glue like consistency? Thank you!
@@NeoMK a video by Heather Wibbels on lymphatic drainage massage saved me. I did it five times a day and it helped me tremendously. I do it to this day when I have issues and have recommended her video to ppl who have also been helped by it.
To all you asking how to get the fluid out, it depends on how long you've had the condition. If you have the glue like fluid in the middle ear or fluid too thick to be drained through the Eustachian tube, you have to get a myringotomy. It's a very simple procedure where a small incision is made into the eardrum, and the fluid is suctioned out. There are small myringotomy tubes placed into the eardrum, which eventually grow into the eardrum. They stay for a few months to help drain fluid and regulate pressure. They fall out on their own after a few months. Myringotomy's are extremely simple and they usually do it under local anesthesia. It takes about 15 minutes for the procedure, and it really helps. Most doctor offices do it, but your best bet is a local ENT clinic.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M GOING THROUGH YOU NAILED THE ROOT OF MY PROBLEM A SPECIALIST TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WHIT ME I KEEP GETTING EAR INFECTIONS AND FLUID THAT HAS A VERY SLIGHT ODOR TO IT ALSO MY KIDS TELL ME I HAVE LOSS OF HEARING I SPEND $200 ON MY EAR DROPS $50 ON THE CONSULTATION $100 ON THE VISIT IAM BACK AGAIN WHIT THE SAME PROBLEM ITS INSANE
Now I understand. This doctor knows more on this topic than any of the 3 ENT doctors that I have visited. I had an ear infection, fluid discharged, took months to clear with antibiotics, but was left with tinnitus, this changed to pulsatile tinnitus, CT scan shows thinning of the inner ear bone. Scans showed no fluid (I now know that this was likely absorbed by my middle ear bones and led to the thinning and pulsatile tinnitus). Now how to fix it.
Because a child is young. Here I am at 47 years old with the same problem year after year with almost every single cold. It's miserable. Sometimes it's so bad I could be legally deaf. Like now.
Very interesting, I am a senior and the thick fluid problem in my right ear and just has a drain tube installed. My hearing should have improved but it hasn't. Went to my out of town MD the other day, she said, it looks good. Now I wonder if she is really qualified to make that determination.
Thank you so much for explaining this, I’ve had so many surgeries because of my ears with noises and popping in the ears.. so this honestly helped A LOT.
I'm in week 3 with fluid in both ears. It's worse because I live at a high altitude and go up and down a mountain every day. Still have almost another week to wait to wait for my Dr appointment. This is awful...
My son has lived with ear fluid all his life. 15years now. How can this be stopped. I have sought numerous ENT specialists but the story remains the same.
I had a bad flu 6 months ago and 3 months later i started losing my hearing in right ear, then there was so much pressure it was sending me insane. I started to withdraw from talking with people and stayed at home more. The doctor said it was a ear infection so i was prescribed anti biotics and after 3 times with no luck i started doing research and found it may have been an ear infection at the start but now i have fluid sitting in my middle ear (Glue ear). If i pinch my nose i can hear bubbles and high pitch noise and not to mention a ringing that has been in my ear now for last 6-7 weeks. I cant hear much except ringing and at the start was yellowish liquid coming out, after a few weeks it slowed down and would come out during the mornings and the nights were good but still pressure. I find that taking a really hot shower dries up the mucas inside my ear and enables me to go on with my day but sometime taking up to 3 hot showers a day, also pressure can affect it as well so when a High pressure weather system comes over i feel my ear has so much pressure compared to a low pressure stormy system that comes over, also i live in a high rise apartment and when i am close to the ocean after 20 mins my ear feels great but going home and being high it hurts again. After last few weeks of research i have found a item called Otovent which is only in England and not my home country so i am currently waiting on this product to arrive as the reviews all are great and if i can find this page again i will come back and let everyone know how it goes. If you are on this page because you have pressure and blocked ears i can totally relate to your frustration and it sucks big time. Let me know if you have also found similiar things with pressure and weather and heights. More things to add is i believe wearing headphones also may have caused the issue even more as i enjoyed playing computer games so i have stopped the last 6 weeks due to pressure on ear.
Are u ok now? I also have tinnitus. I am suffering for about 2months. This is driving me crazy. Some of the fluid drained. But left some. I hear pop and gulp sound everytime I swollow. My ENT doctor said try to more swollow and let it drain naturally. But I don't think that's work.
@@retrogirl_1 It has gotten slightly better but not as bad as the pressure has gone now i have slight liquid out of the ear, the Otovent is at my local post office so going to get it tomorrow and test it out.
You have mentioned "Wearing Headphone". Have you thought about the Wifi, Bluetooth, Cell Phones Signals in your car causing it? You may be EMF Sensitive and don't know it.
Hi Dr. Keith. Great information. But if the fluid gets thick then how do we make it thin and drain thru the eustachian tube? Are there any OTC drugs to do that? Please suggest! Thank you.
Oh yes, absolutely thank you! It took a while though, but your words have stuck with me an encouraged me to persist in solving the problems it’s been quite an education. ❤️👏🏻
Not always from infection. I was in a roll over car accident. The fluid I my sinuses ran down into my middle ear. The doctor prescribed Azelastine, a nasal spray to dry the fluid up. I just started using it so I don't know if it works or not.
Could be dust or allergy I was deaf in one ear the doctors tried to blow air on eardrum no way. Fortunately I was able to hear after taking anti histamines for 6 months. I'd to get rid of anything that gathered dust but I couldn't hear otherwise. Had very bad sinuses otc wouldn't always work well on that. Needs prescription.
My ENT put me on Azelastine also. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped one bit. I've lost nearly all my hearing in this ear with the fluid. Guess I'll have to go back for my second myringotomy - this time with a tube.
Dear Dr. Forwith, Thank you so much for great explanation that you provided. I really appreciate it. The problem is how to get people at Kaiser to decide on what to do next. Things are delayed a lot. I do not know what I can do to expedite the process. Mine has been almost 3 weeks and my next appointment is next week.
@@Andrea11240I found out much of the issue was due to tonsil stones. It was causing pressure on the eustachian tube. I did lymphatic drainage massage for three days and then I pulled on my ear and four tonsil stones popped out.
Thank you so much for this. I had ear infections as a child and in college over 25 years ago. Fluid would linger afterwards in college times. It was debilitating and annoying. The dr didn't drain it. They recommended things that might dry it up like guaifenisin, Sudafed or maybe antihistamines because I had already taken the abx. Now, I have it again but haven't been sick. I'm going to the Dr to get it drained.
2 years, a whole 2 years and I'm now just realizing that this could be my issue. I'm 16, and now I've been told that this sgit in my ear is now as glue. Over the span of 2 years, it might be solid now. I refuse to live the rest of my life like this. I won't.
Take antibiotics along with a painkiller ,do steaming, I think if you get it because of a nose infection you should use a nasal spray/saline spray. Get well soon
i forced water through my nose into my ears. i thought I could clean the inside of my ears.. what a stupid idea. the water only made it into the left ear which hurt. Now i feel like the water is stuck in there or worse I perforated my ear drum. I have been trying to shut my nose and mouth and suck my ears inward to get the water out. sometime it make a sucking noise but no relief as of yet. when i pop ears the right one goes easily and then the left after about using twice as much pressure, and it sounds "underwater". im sure there is water on other side of eustachian tube.

okay so its been about 8 months dince i first realized a ringing in my ear that came along with some ear ache. thats all went away in a matter of a week but the clicking noise never went away. its not a buzzing or loud noise its more of a watery click as if i had water or ear wax stuck in there and it comes along with major dizzness and confusion. its interfered so much with daily life. ive become depressed and very anxious. i have an ENT Appointment scheduled for next month and the dizziness just gets worser everyday. anyone else been through this? what bugs me the most is the fact that i feel unconscious of the things i do. it literally intereferes with everything i do and im tired of this!! any suggestions??

Educational yes, does it tell us what to do when it's been 2 weeks and your doctor hasn't prescribed a follow-up appointment or any advice of what to do if the antibiotics don't work, or if they do work but the fluid doesn't drain? No.
I loved this video because it kind of helps me understand my four year old son who is not speaking yet and is going to have ear tubes inserted next week. How long can fluid be trapped in the ear? Years? I'm just really worried about how long that fluid has been stuck in my son's ears because the ENT said it's been there awhile but of course he can't pinpoint how long. I'm really hoping and praying he hasn't had any permanent hearing loss!

Thank You
Thank u I'm gonna try the guafensin
Guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine come combined in some medications to treat cold and flu symptoms. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps break up mucus so you can get it out. Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant that relieves a stuffy nose.
I'm so sick and tired of them talking about kids this is an adult problem as well that is worse
Right like. I’m

Thanks again for posting your video!
did you manage to solve this problem
hey are cured from TINITUS? If yes then how i am getting crazy having this🥺
This summarizes perfectly why parents need to get their children into the ENT or GP as soon as fluid in the middle ear is suspected! I can't stress this point enough to school teams and parents! Thank you for taking the time to create and post this educational video! AF (Concerned SLP with a huge passion for audiology! :))
ent don't do anthing to resolve it.
But wait... So how do we get this fluid out?????
Right?
Antibiotics, and if that doesn't work- see an ENT specialist
Antibiotics remove the bacteria, not the fluid.
@YodatheHobbit , indeed. But antibiotics reduce inflammation, allowing the fluid to move and absorbed by the body.
Very informative and well-presented. However, that's the problem. What's the solution?
This just scared me the crap out of me

Thanks so much for your expectations, I’ve been have fluids draining from my ear for a couple of months now. I wish you suggested solutions though
Hello now how is your ear fluid?
Fluid just drained today. I was eight days following a mild cold, no pain but was an annoyance, hearing was muffled in left ear and could physically feel the fluid move when I shook my head side to side. Tried peroxide in the ear could hear it fizzing, also used a blow dryer, banging my head on a pillow none of those techniques appeared to work. I wasn't sure if it was swimmers ear I dove off a dock several weeks prior and thought it might of been the result of that. I'm thinking it was just a blocked Eustachian tube I woke up to a clear ear this morning and what a relief.
What was the noise like and any remedies u did?
For the record, I am a highly skeptical patient but, hey, whatever works!
pantano207 How did you use the onion please? 💝💜😇

Thank you for the video, however you kind of have me in a panic. I've had ear fluid in my ear for a week now and it will not drain. Do you have any suggestions on how I can drain this fluid before it turns to a glue like consistency? Thank you!
It's been 10 years, how are you now? What helped with the fluid?
@@NeoMK a video by Heather Wibbels on lymphatic drainage massage saved me. I did it five times a day and it helped me tremendously. I do it to this day when I have issues and have recommended her video to ppl who have also been helped by it.
@@freespiritsglide Thanks for the update! I'll check that out as well.
Why everyone in the comments who said they had this problem, never report back or tell us the status of their condition now?
Did ur ears get undrained how long did it take and what u do
To all you asking how to get the fluid out, it depends on how long you've had the condition.
That’s scary.
They are easy peasy ...Ive have had several in my lifetime.
Sadly now however my eardrum had been destroyed by infection.
Take care of your ears
Thank you for your input as to the myringotomy. You enhanced an otherwise excellent video presentation that did not cover draining the fluid.
@@heatherbilyea6146 Sorry! Was your eardrum destroyed because of neglecting to get care for infection/ fluid?

Yeah i have it I'm a child but can't go to the hospital because of money
Now I understand. This doctor knows more on this topic than any of the 3 ENT doctors that I have visited.
I had an ear infection, fluid discharged, took months to clear with antibiotics, but was left with tinnitus, this changed to pulsatile tinnitus, CT scan shows thinning of the inner ear bone. Scans showed no fluid (I now know that this was likely absorbed by my middle ear bones and led to the thinning and pulsatile tinnitus). Now how to fix it.
good presentation, but how the many years "glue" is removing from inner ear?
Because a child is young. Here I am at 47 years old with the same problem year after year with almost every single cold. It's miserable. Sometimes it's so bad I could be legally deaf. Like now.
Thank you! Good presentation but I was hoping for a solution at the end. Are there no solutions - ? please share for us who are looking for a answer.
The best explanation on the Web on this topic. Well done!
Very interesting, I am a senior and the thick fluid problem in my right ear and just has a drain tube installed. My hearing should have improved but it hasn't. Went to my out of town MD the other day, she said, it looks good. Now I wonder if she is really qualified to make that determination.

My son has lived with ear fluid all his life. 15years now.
How can this be stopped. I have sought numerous ENT specialists but the story remains the same.
So what treatment do you recommend? Yawning and swallowing seems to help me.
What hope do you have to offer besides wait?
I went to ENT for my 9 month and was told to come back 3 months after I was told he had fluid in middle ear. So confused.
How did you heal from it ?
Well, it explained the problem well but gave not even a hint of possible solutions.

I have tinnitus and my left ear is full but it is getting better now. I had a lot of ear infections as a kid but my tinnitus formed in my late 20s.
Not always from infection.
I was in a roll over car accident. The fluid I my sinuses ran down into my middle ear. The doctor prescribed Azelastine, a nasal spray to dry the fluid up. I just started using it so I don't know if it works or not.
That’s the drops I have nothing is working
But this video did not tell you how to drain it
Dear Dr. Forwith,
Thank you so much for great explanation that you provided. I really appreciate it.
The problem is how to get people at Kaiser to decide on what to do next. Things are delayed a lot. I do not know what I can do to expedite the process. Mine has been almost 3 weeks and my next appointment is next week.
Thanks for explaining this in-depth. My condition is getting better. For the longest time, I thought I just had hearing loss.
@Faith Rogers. What treatment did you have?

I'm going to the Dr to get it drained.
thanks for your explanation of the problem, so is there a reason why the ear tunnel is swollen in an adult if not in a child caused by genetics?
2 years, a whole 2 years and I'm now just realizing that this could be my issue. I'm 16, and now I've been told that this sgit in my ear is now as glue. Over the span of 2 years, it might be solid now. I refuse to live the rest of my life like this. I won't.
How do I find someone like you in Tennessee??? BEST EXPLANATION IVE EVER HEARD…MY RIGHT EAR HAS HAD SOME ISSUES FOR SOOOO LONG..😢
Ohhh so this is why even of I got over a cold months I still can’t hear well... my ears have so much pressure...
Did not tell us how to overcome the problem when the channel to the nose is blocked, as in my case from having my nose broken years ago.

after 4 days in bed, my sinus was starting to clear some, and the sore throat, I mixed lemon and ginger boil, take the juice after cooking
for 15 minutes, add 2 teaspoon honey and drink, that snake oil gave me results immediately,I kept drinking that for 3 days, no more
bad sinuses restrictions sore throat went away, however I still have problems with my left ear,not back to normal yet, however my ear

Hi Spades 22, I had exactly the same problem. It's important to do a tympanometry to get a clear diagnosis. In my case it is Otitis media with effusion (glue ear). My doctor said that it's best to wait and recommended against myringotomy. I had the same ringing mostly in my left ear now for nearly 5 months. I was scared as hell like you. I am still waiting patiently. But the good news is that the ringing is changing (reducing) and is not constant. So I definitely know it's not my hallucination.
