Old man here who knows this works.
Drive that averages 175 and fairway wood that averages 150 gets me at least within chipping distance of any 5-par under 500 yards, in three shots.
That gives me the very rare birdie, fighting chance at a par, and very very rarely worse than a bogey. So most days I can break 90!
Brings to mind the story attributed to Ben Hogan. When chided by a reporter for not being an extremely long hitter, he replied, "There are lots of long hitters. The woods are full of them."

Hi Matty, I wanted to thank you for breaking 100. I'm a 24 handicap player, starting in July this year, and I used your 5-club method, shooting 9 over for the front 9 at my club today. I only watched your video on the weekend! This is the best score I've achieved at this club. Using my 5 favourite clubs kept my swing and mentality in my zone, which kept me away from my delusional "professional shot" zone. I've got a comp on Saturday, and I'm playing with 5 clubs. This was also the most stress-free round I've ever played! Can't wait to break 90!

Growing up in the 50's our local paper the Chicago Tribune sports section ran a frequent little picture lesson type deal titled, as i recall,
"Golf my way" or "How I play golf" by Jack Nicholsen I read it every time it was in the paper and ergo acquired quite a bit of good information. later I caddied at Chicago Golf, the oldest 18 hole course in USA and they paid 3.50 a round but you got to play free golf on Caddy day ie Mondays. Had a blast putting Nicholsens lessons into my game. Later when I started liking players, Nicholsen was not a favorite...he took too long to put. Liked Lee, Arnie, and Gary always rooted for them to beat Jack. Majors, 6 Lee, Seven Arnie and nine Gary ie 22 majors. Good video as usual.

@@JohnPrivate3845 $3.50 in 1968 even with a tip is below par. You were getting cheapoed by that course. Yes very grateful for guys like sidekick who has been very helpful.
there were only 120 members at that club , rated 5th most exclusive in USA The number is locked, and the only one that tipped always used a golf cart which required the caddy to run behind the cart but still find the ball before the 2 guys on the cart would get to the ball. The caddy was responsible for both riders so it was more difficult than normal. That rate was $5 and He'd tip about $5 so it would be a good day. We're talking 1959 ish or so. The rough at that course was unbelievable about 7 inches high and thick. Recently (2018) they hosted a legends of LGPA tour event won by Laura Davies...who is capable of playing the mens tees. They had some other US Opens back in the early days . Great course for young guys to play for free.

@@JohnPrivate3845 That Chicago golf only had 100 members back then in 1959 or so. Probably only 50 played. No tipping allowed as they thought 3.50 was more than enough. You better be a multimillionaire to get on the waiting list. I guess they have 120 members now but its frozen. We were both working too hard for measly pay but it was fun.

Around the green on the fringe and even in light rough I will use the old man's club: the chipper. Mine's around 25 years old, 6.5 loft and looks like a lofted putter. Pros don't use them since it takes a club space, if you are not a pro you should consider one. Though limited in scope you will rarely mishit them, if you're a decent putter, which most people aren't, but that's another story.

I was a 10 hcp when l bought this book decades ago. I read it cover to cover in a week. Played the next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shot 74, 72 and 69 in the three days. I was already a good striker, what l wasn't was a course manager and shot maker. Jack made hitting shape shots easily understood. I think it's in that book he said, "Stop and smell the roses." That changed golf for me. I stopped grinding at the game.

I am the highest handicap in my clubs flighted match play tournament and I am in the finals because I play for bogey and keep my chips low. In pressure situations, knowing I only need a couple decent shots each hole and I can miss hit a chip and end up in a playable position on the green gives me the mental freedom to execute hole after hole, even when things inevitably don't go my way.

    I SHOT AN ALBATROSS
    What’s up fellow amateurs.
I’m currently on road to break 100. My local course is a Par 70, total yardage 5469, short yes, but ideal for my beginner level.
My mind set was usually, get to the green in fewest shots possible. So example, a 340 yard par four, I must reach that in two, so I use my 170 club 3 iron (that’s what it goes if I hit it perfect) First off tee for 170 then, same club second shot to get there…….. how often does that happen…..NEVER. Shank it, top it, slice it etc etc. Playing this way, I rarely shoot below 110 with my best being 108, a lot of balls lost along the way.
Now, today, LISTEN UP. I changed my by score card, stroke index 1-9, 2 extra shot = par, stroke index 10-18, 1 extra shot = par. Making my par on my local course now 98. Best thing I ever did on a golf course and didn’t even have the club in my hand.
Look I didn’t break 100, but I shot a comfortable 103, however, the most fun I have had on a golf course. With this new par, I shot 9 holes over par still, but 3 pars, 5 birdies and AN ALBATROSS. Just referring to these at pars and birdies gives massive enjoyment and confident boost.
I did this with the longest club being 6 iron - perfect strike of this for me goes 150-160 yards. Driver, 3, 4 & 5 iron stayed in the car boot.
The albatross. This was par 4, stroke index 3, so my new par is 6. I hit the perfect 6 iron from the tee. Knowing I had another 3 shots for GIR, my next shot was and 8 iron, the would have kept it short of the green, taking the surrounding bunkers completely out of play. How ever, poor connection, it went about 80-100 yards. But because of club selection it stayed in play, a longer club would have gone OOB. But now I had a great shot at a birdy, next shot to the green 80 yards, bunkers now out of play, with the idea of two putt for a nice 5. Jesus, I hit the best sand wedge I have ever hit, landed 8 foot short of the hole, a second later it disappeared.
Can’t wait to get back out on the course, imma break this freakin 100!
Thanks to golf sidekick, you legend.
