    Hi. I did the ferry from Rome to Catania in 1958!!! That was before the flights were started . I was 8 yrs old and it was a steam locomotive!!! Then in Catania, seeing Etna the volcano was so beautiful and memorable!!!

    I'm italian, and also live in Milan! I take this trip every year because in Sicily I have relatives of mine!! So some years ago I used to go by train like you in this video, but now I go by car because for me it's better. But this experience in train is the most beautiful in the world!

    12 hours from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in 3rd Class on Christmas Day 2003 was probably my favourite train journey - they still had carriages where you stepped out onto a little platform in the open air to go from one to another.

    WOW! Josh, that looked a bit of a tough ride there! Although, used to seeing you on aircraft, the terrestrial way has it's benefits which air travel misses out on, the passing scenery. Traveling terrestrially gives a better sence of actually 'being' in and a part of whatever country you are passing through. If you're flying you only get a beautiful view of the Italian clouds! Lovely video, as alwase. Keep going mate!

    Great Job Josh! Love the beauty of the countries you went through by train. I was lucky enough to work out of Palermo back in the 80s. Loved the city and the people were great. I loved to be able with the shop owners to haggle about the price of a item in their stores since most of them were family businesses they told me the prices were not set in stone. I also remember a prison being there and they had a armored personnel vehicle that circled the prison 24/7. Thanks again Josh and be safe in your travels!

      Actually stazione centrale in Milan is one of the only station of that period that can be seen nowadays. In fact, it was built in 1931 under the dictator Mussolini and during that age, infrastructure were built using roman and greek features. This kind of architecture is called neoclassical-fascist.

    I think trains are super underrated. While today everything is about flying I think trains should definitely supported, they offer more comfort at a lower price and are much, much better for the environment. And the best of all is that you can enjoy the scenery!

    • @marcosalamanca8742
      @marcosalamanca8742 Рік тому

      No man. They are much more expensive, that is the main issue. A price drop in train tickets would lead to many more people opting for this better and more mindful way of travelling.. But as it's almost always the case, being environmentally mindful comes with a cost.

    Sicily has also some surprising rolling stock which is not found in Italy, such as the E464 locomotives now used for intercity trains (in Italy they are only for regional trains), and old E655/E656 and D443 locomotives

    Yes, Josh! More trains! I love them. I was in Milan in May of 2019. Gorgeous city and the train station is stunning. Such a beautiful country. I would love to take this journey -- although no a/c, no running water and broken toilets . . . hmmm. I certainly hope you had a functioning toilet somewhere in your car!
    Thanks for the video -- I hope we'll see more of your stay in Palermo!

    • @MrItaliansound
      @MrItaliansound 3 роки тому +1

      toilets were not broken, the train staff close them while aprocing boarding on the Ferry. Come on, on a train that travels more than 20 hours, they can't all be broken, if it really happened now I could read it in the newspapers. Same thing for the air conditioning, if it works in one cabin, it must also work in the other, there are air intensity regulators in each cabin, it was enough to adjust it higher.

    Nice video! I’ve been on few long distance train trips - never been a fan - but they can be fun?
    Your joke about Italians and the war, reminded me of a train trip from Venezia to Milano.
    We day tripped to Venezia and on the return there was thunder storm with lighting.
    He heard a boom and the train crawled to a stop 😳
    There was a young German couple travelling in our cabin and we decided to make a quick ‘picnic’? We had bought some bread, cheese and cured meats and the couple had wine and sweets! We all had a great time.
    I saw a RR worker and decided to ask how much longer we would be stopped and said ‘venti minuti signori’.
    I told my new German friend, he said twenty minutes (mind you we had been stopped an hour) and he responded dead pan: an Italian twenty minutes?
    I just busted out laughing.
    Anyway, your train report jogged my memory!
    Cheers.
