Intercity Notte : The sleeper train that goes on a boat!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 сер 2020
- A night aboard the famous Milan to Palermo Sleeper. The train departs Milan in the evening and arrives in Palermo in time for tea the next day. The journey even involves the train being loaded onto a ferry in order to cross the straight of Messina.

If you noticed some parts of the video sounded a bit "off" this is due to a camera fault. New equipment has now been bought although a few of my upcoming videos may also sound a bit strange. Apologies for this.
I'm pretty sure your train is traveling through another dimension.
Devnon was there an oddly dressed woman or man calling themselves, “Il Dottore”?
no need to apologise your the master!!!
i thought the carriages had lots of wheel flats
Dylan's Travel Reports
new york to orlando train
I was on this train in 1973, and had no idea that it was put on a ferry. I woke up during the night, looked out the window, and saw that we weren't moving. I asked another passenger what was going on, and he said that we were on a boat - WTF!
Nice
That actually sounds awesome to me! And I may be disappointed to not get to experience that same feeling again once being informed! Lol
16:26 "Libero" isn't a newspaper. It's a complementary toilet paper in case it runs out in the bathroom
As an Italian, I concur that Libero is just a far right mouthpiece.
uhh is this sarcasm? lol
@@laurir4519 no, satire :)
Seriously, I can't believe that a so racist newspaper is provided on a national train (I travel often with IntercityNotte but not this one, and I never seen that sch...ahm... "newspaper" on board.
It sounds worst if you think that Dylan gets up in southern Italy where Libero was provided. Libero often has racists articles about southern Italy (Libero's perfect ideal is a white heterosexual northenitalian man)
@@lucaspublictransport995 ohh okay didn't know about that

Glad to hear they have put a stop to cabin sharing with strangers in overnight trains. I hope this becomes the new norm.
You could always buy a cabin all for yourself, it was just gonna cost you more. At the moment they are only allowing one passenger cabins because of the pandemic, and since you are forced to buy the whole thing they are keeping the prices very low. Honestly i never found any major problem in travelling with strangers, given the typical price. You just got what you paid for.
Sharing cabins with strangers is the norm in Russia and most ex Soviet states
@@giuseppepuglisi3980 Ah, you mean you are all for starting new relationships then? :)
5:45 - 5:55 Such a cute farewell! Anyone with somebody to offer this is truly blessed. 🙏 ☺️
Well done Dylan. I was blessed to be stationed in Vicenza as a US Army engineer for several short tours and got to travel a lot on their trains. I did the sleeper train out of Milano to Heidelburg and found it to be a great experience plus I enjoyed the Minestrone soup at the Milano station. I have a friend stationed at Sigonella NAS near Catania and he tells me the island it quite beautiful never knowing you could take a train there. Well done for teaching me that as well. Keep up the good work young man and God bless.
Salutes from Sicily from an ex Army ENG. Been in Ederle training with the 173rd right before UNPROFOR Deployment an Ice Age ago!....hugs bro!
Hahahahaha amazing , literally a train on a boat! It was so weird being on the island but still on the train! Milan Station is inconceivably epic! Like a cartoon version of an epic station that couldn't possibly exist in reality. Great vid thanks!
This video is one of my Dylan favorites. What a concept-splitting up and loading an entire train onto a ferry, then reconnecting the train components and carrying on with the remainder of the overland trip. It’s a pity there was no dining service. Knowing that in advance, passengers could take advantage of the food offerings in that fabulous Milano station, packing up all kinds of goodies for the 20 hours on the train. The scenery was wonderful. As for the room needing repairs/refurbishment, that was true. But the price helped compensate for the flaws. Thank you so much for this video. Someday I hope to experience this trip, too. 🌼
Thanks 😁
I love how you let the video do the talking.
Thanks 😁
@@DylansTravelReports Yes and thank you for not putting awful music
That’s my favorite part.
Your videos are so relaxing, no chit chat ,just videos that make want to travel.
That brings back childhood memories. My parents come from Sicily. As a child we drove this route a lot.
The sight of Sciily from mainland Italy makes so many people wonder why they don't build a bridge. It turns out that the Strait of Messina is very deep, around 500 feet. They were going to build the world's longest suspension bridge but the project was cancelled.
Same reason why we can't build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Irish sea is too deep
There's been talk of a floating tunnel, but since that's pretty new technology I doubt it will be built soon. Maybe it'll be finished by the 2030's.
The strait of Messina is 820ft (250m) deep at its deepest point, which is much shallower than water bodies that have bridges over them. Also the Italian government is already building the Messina Bridge which will enable cars and trains to move from mainland to Sicily and vice versa. Some 3.3 km long and 60 m wide, the bridge would be supported by two 382 m pillars, each higher than the Empire State Building, and accommodate six freeway lanes, a railway (for up to 200 trains a day), and two walkways. Source: Wikipedia.
@@rollingstonez89 "On 12 October 2006, the Italian Parliament voted 272 to 232 in favour of abandoning the plan due to the bridge's 'doubtful usefulness and viability', as well as the inability of the already burdened Italian treasury to bear its share of the cost." Source: Wikipedia.
@@scottlarson1548 They started it again and cancelled it in 2013 as well, but it still doesn't mean it's impossible due to the depth, it's only not economically viable according to the government.
"A pleasant place to wait ...". I used to stay in a hotel next door to the station - now sadly fallen into less sympathetic hands - and the are was distinctly unpleasant and rather threatening after dark. You can easily find discarded syringes and the amount of graffiti is legendary. Even Red Berets (modelled on the New York group of similar name) staying in their cabin.
The "some sort of cloth" is probably a bath towel. Traditionally, Italian bath towels are not particularly thick.
One of those islands visible from the Palermo line is called Vulcano, which gives us the name for such things.
Thank you for having reported so fairly this old style train journey. I love train trip but I have travelled only on frecciarossa and sometimes people from other country make me discover some trip I would like to do.
My country is so beautiful, if only Italians knew!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Can't cease admiring Milano Centrale, is absolutely Astonish..! This is quite a Fantastic journey, I made it from Rome to Palermo in a Bus in 1995, there is a "Traghetto" (Ferry) for buses and cars too, but obviously a Ferry for the train is something else..!! We saw all the operation of splitting the train to be "swallowed" by the Ferry, while waiting our turn to get into our Ferry, is just amazing..!! Thanks for the ride, this is one of the most exciting railroad trips..!
Memories of the Night Ferry that used to run from Victoria to Paris.
No irritating music. Big plus.
I never realised how close to the mainland Sicily really was, it's literally spitting distance. What a beautiful country Italy is and the view across the Messina straight is truly beautiful.
Wow I'm so in awe with how Italians come up with these kind of transportation
It's actually the British who came up with the train ferry
That is truly a beautiful train station. In a world where precautions to prevent injuries/accidents are often taken to the extreme and absurd, it seems odd to see an unstoppable mass of steel backing into a station while people push their trolleys along side with no guard rail or barrier. Nice to know that in the world of train travel, passengers are trusted to take care without a nanny to scold them. A train on a boat!! How unique!!!! Southern Italy is beautiful and the sea is so blue!! I want to go!! Thanks for the experience!
That Milan station is very impressive to look at, even the inside where the platforms are is pretty cool, especially the roof.
It's nice watching you travel on the train especially now during the pandemic, making me feel I'm the one travelling. Thanks for uploading your video and keep up the good work.
Glad you're enjoying the videos 😁
I first made this very journey in the 1990's and this video brought back some really happy memories. I'm sure you too will look back one day Dylan and also appreciate all of this travel.
I'm sure I will 😁
50 years ago when I was 10 we used to get a train from London to Palermo and sometimes we had to sit in corridors because trains were packed before planes flew constantly like now, thank you for bringing back fantastic memories I had a tear in my eye ,brilliant video ,I might just do trip again once again thanks
Your last stop is where my Italian grandma came from!
wow.... such great memories... made this trip over 35 years ago.... when I tell friends the train went on a ferry they think i'm nuts and making this up.... thanks for making this video... was wonderful .... also great seeing so many people wearing masks during this terrible covid19 times... well done and keep safe....Derek (Ireland)
Very interesting. Thanks for watching!
Hi Dylan I enjoyed the video. I also like the ferry ride. and the scenery is breath taken!!! I wish I on that train.I agree with you, this train should have Dine in Car or a Snack Car. Thank you for the video Dylan!!! See you on Friday!!! 😀
Glad you enjoyed it! See ya Friday.
Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! Milano Centrale station is really impressive and very beautiful. My wife, daughter and I stayed there in August 2019 when we arrived from Rome and stayed in an apartment very close to the station. Your video is excellent and gives a great view of the train, the places and sceneries you saw. The logistics of transporting the train on a ferry is very interesting and I loved what I saw. I really like your assessments about the trains themselves and what's on them, these informations are very useful for planning a good trip, without any setbacks; your friend Nonstop Eurotrip also gives great reviews and I like the work of both of you. Thanks for sharing!
Fascinating. I have added this to my future travel queue which grows longer and longer as I watch UA-cam and am yet unable to travel to Europe from the USA.
Bel treno. I servizzi sono ottimi. Viagio bene organizato 🚂👏
I was born in Sicily, currently I'm living in Bologna and I do the trip Bologna/Messina by train about 3/4 times a year. I didn't think that someone in the world could find much interest in this train going on a ferry to cross the sea (the stretto di Messina), probably because I've always done that and it is just normal for me!
Wow, this was a surprise.
Unfortunately intercity notte didn't have yet a food section on board.
Enjoy your next trip! Ciao!
1:12 thank you for giving some love to Milan Central Station! I think it's beautiful and deserves some appreciation :)
I agree 😁
When you mentioned Salerno I couldn't look at that countryside the same way again.
My mind went back over 70 years to landing craft on the beaches, and men fighting and dying in that rugged landscape.....
I get that feeling every time I go to Hastings
I've used these trains several times over the last 40 years and it always amazes me that you get videos on UA-cam as if it were a new discovery!
You should have done a film 40 years ago then; save young Dylan the trouble.
@@bobswan6196 Well we didn't have Internet then , we just went out exploring using our brains and our wits, and asking people questions on the way. Fifteen years ago I cycled 7,000 kms through Mexico and Central America with no phone or Internet, just using a paper map. A lot of people nowadays simply couldn't do that!
Great Trip report! Thanks for this video, I think this route is one of the most interesting in Europe. This route is on my bucket list for a longer time, so I hope I will try next year! Btw. I heard your coach had wheel flats (in my language we call it "worn coach").
Thanks! Glad you enjoyes.
I Learned Something New Today After All These Years !!! I Never Seen Or Heard Of A Train Riding On A Boat ...
What a wonderful trip. Thank you. Merci.
I found this video by chance. And I enjoyed it immensily. I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I am 75 year old. To travel from Buenos Aires, to the Province of Entre Rios we have to croos the Praná River. In the 1950s and the early 1960s the only way to go there was eioher by train or car which were place on ferry boats which took about 5 or so hours to cross. Althought your train and your ferry boat are much better that in my days here, it took me back to those dasy. May I add that I a m a great lover of trains. William Grant (Willie)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed 😁
Train in 3 parts on ferry, that makes sense, I was thinking that the ferry would be REALLY LONG! 😀
lol
Thank you for remembering your Roman history. Your Classics teacher would be proud!
What a treat: gorgeous scenery and a ferry! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good morning Dylan, another fine travel report. Like many of those commenting, the audio wasn’t an issue. I enjoy the natural approach to your reports of a traveller coping with the lack of available food and a challenging air conditioning system, whilst enjoying the journey and the good things. You kept me entertained for the full 30+ mins, thanks.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed 😁
That’s crazy!!!! Awesome journey!!!! Thanks for sharing! 🇧🇷👍🏻
Thank you very much, Dylan !! What a fantastic experience we have with you !!! You explained everything to us, we traveled well with you, it was a treat. Your videos are always exciting to watch, you never get bored. What a "cruise train" you took !!! It's fantastic. Bravo to you, again !!! We needed to get back on the train and vacation in the middle of summer !!! Cool !!!!!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Before you wrote it in the video, I said to myself “This looks like Washington DC’s Union Station”! This is gorgeous.
I wish I could experience this beautiful journey. Thank you for making such beautiful journey videos
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Great video - thanks again! The Milano station architecture, the very blue sea, the mountains, and the ferry operation made for a nice variety. Italy is a long country, but I never imagined a train taking 20:45. Hopefully enough passengers will choose an overnight train over a plane ride to maintain the service. I think passenger trains rode ferries across the San Francisco Bay in California many decades back.
Thanks!
Spent the past few days binge watching your videos and let me say im a tiny bit obsessed 😂😂😂
Hope you're enjoying 😁
Pandemic or no pandemic. I ain't sharing a sleeping cabin with strangers.
Why?
Are u scared of them bringing harm to u?

Beautiful trip, Dylan. And another good videoreport!
Thanks!
Ciao Dylan, the Aeolian Islands as volcanoes are anything but dormant. Both Stromboli and Vulcano are currently active, with Stromboli being quite dangerous.
Wow, thanks for the info!
I think the emphasis on this trip is the comfort of the sleeping accommodation. Don’t expect anything else. I can’t imagine traveling in the compartment with two other people. It was tiny just for one. Probably in normal conditions a dinette car would be a fantastic idea, but in these days of the pandemic, and Italy just recently recovering somewhat, only the bare minimum services appear to be normal at this time. Beautiful scenery make it well worth the trip. Just bring your own food, as you said.
This was so cool to see, thanks for sharing! I must say, it would drive me mad to be unable to have any fresh air coming in during the night when I want the blind closed!
Michael that’s a long statement u got there
1:00 - Yeah, seeing that architecture offers me vibes of Washington D.C.'s Union Station mixed with a small hint of Los Angeles's Union Station.
The terminal with all the restrictions reminds me of the opening bit from Half Life 2, when you arrive in City 17.
Wow! This is so cool. Thanks again for sharing your travels! :)
Very nice.
Thanks .
Nice surprise! (meaning I had already forgotten you are Mondays, too, now 😆)
I find ferry trains exciting even if the loading logistics slows 🐌 down your overall time.
The fiat cars were molto dreary! really surprised me. Grey, grey, grey. When I heard the air couldn't be controlled adequately ... well, that can ruin a 20 hour trip, for sure, and you're sorta trapped in your hot room since there is no club car 🥺 Was also surprised to hear loud voices from ??? the corridor? the neighboring cabin? - no attempt at sound proofing those cabins. I will praise them for 1 thing: the *foot operated faucets* are a great idea any time, virus or not!
But good to have you out again in spite of the pandemic!. I think their no sitting with strangers rule is a good idea and will make people more willing to travel again.
Nice post and nice to vicariously see some beautiful scenery. Sicily looks just as I pictured it. Would be fun to take local trains around the island, if they exist.
Thanks! Yes, some of the passengers were a bit noisy but they did quieten down at night.
AMAZING!! Didn´t know that this exists !! Thanks for letting us travel with you
An impressive video Dylan! The scenery south of Naples look beautiful! Thank you for sharing :-)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was a visually stunning journey, with great interest as the train was secured on the ferry. The lack of facility for food and drink on such a long journey is a serious minus point. People are not expecting to board this service laden with provisions. It still looked a fun journey to make, though! Keep them coming, Dylan! 😁
Thanks!
You missed the breakfast and the food available on the ferry. Get over it! Lose some weight.
@@jenniferbeatty7545 My point was nothing to do with the (relatively short) ferry section of the journey. This service takes 20h45 from Milan and Dylan points out that there is no dining car, a limited amount of food for Deluxe passengers only and no additional food available to buy. This may well be due to pandemic restrictions, but is still unusual for a journey of such length.
A very unique journey indeed❤️👍🏻 loved every moment of it👍🏻🙏🏾
Glad you enjoyed!
This is probably asking way too much, but as we all know, if you don't ask you won't know. Is it possible to place, somewhere on the screen, a map of your train route in the country you're traveling through? I really enjoy your videos, but would enjoy a little more detail if it's possible. Thank you. Stay safe.
Thanks for the suggestion. The main issue with placing a map on screen would be finding a good one that wouldn't infringe on any copyright laws which I've looked into but it was proving difficult.
Dylan's Travel Reports understand. However, if anything changes down the track (pun), that would be great.
This idea sounds awesome.
If this was to be implemented, you don't want the map to be too intrusive to overshadow the video overall. Some light transparency to kind of blend in but able too see it as well.
Plus you don't have to show the whole journey, just portions of it, especially in the likes of stopover locations and how long you slept through portions of the journey in 20+ voyages. Even in parts where you show scenic views where you filmed footage and such.
Just my two cents worth.
Simple. Buy a map of Italy!

Over 20 hours without a dining car should be a war crime. Ridiculous. Another amazing trip review which I hope to emulate sometime soon.

Great video again Dylan. I've enjoyed it very much.
Thanks!
Bloody hell... at first I thought it was just bad luck, you being in a wheelflat'ed coach... no clue there was one heck of a reality check coming up!
An Epic! This was really great. I agree the lack of food is absurd for first class. They could learn from the Czechs. On your recent post they were offering a great menu and that was for a trip from Graz to Vienna.

Well done. Good reporting I hope FS acknowledges your good work.... and Italo

Edges on the sleazy. No food car is absurd for a 20 hr trip.
I agree. I think it's down to the fact that most Intercity Notte routes are only about 12 hours long but still.
@@DylansTravelReports Indeed. Even a vending machine in the vestibule would help!
A comment in Italian indicates food scarcity is a function of virus-related problems getting the advance preparation done, so hoped temporary.
@@michaelleighton6879 unfortunatly not. made the same journey in fall last year(2019) and no buffet wagon in sight. still highly recommended great journey

Excellent video, as always, Dylan! I have made the journey from Rome to Sicily several times on the day train, but never overnight. You were very unlucky to be in a carriage with such bad wheelflats.....I would have had great difficulty in sleeping with that racket going on all night! That looks very much like Vesuvius at about 16:00.....so you didn't miss it after all! Unfortunately Trenitalia withdrew catering vehicles from all but daytime high speed services nearly ten years ago, but if you travel on their Thello overnight service between Paris, Milano and Venice (when it restarts after Covid), you can enjoy both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant car.
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the info!
Excellent video, I will probably never get over to there, so great to watch from the West Coast of Canada. Thx.

I really enjoyed your journey, and think you were very brave to undertake such a marathon during the pandemic! Well done, and look forward to your next overnight journey.

Very nice report! I did the same trip 20 years ago (but not in a deluxe cabin). Things are not changed a lot. In Italy, trains are often considered means of transport "for poors". I hope we will improve them in the next years. Thank you for sharing this unique trip!
Thanks! Railways don't tend to change all that fast 😅
Thanks we enjoyed that 🥂
Thanks for a fascinating video. I didn't know about this route. I remember, as a boy being fascinated by the sight of the London to Paris express train (The Golden Arrow) being loaded onto a ferry at Dover. Sadly I didn't have the opportunity to travel on it but often saw the train at London Victoria station and was thrilled by the idea of it going all the way to Paris! This was, of course long before the channel tunnel.
Another great video, thanks for sharing!😁
Thanks!
interesting about the white paint on tracks, also that's not done in Australia despite our hot summers - our trains just have to go slower in the summer as a just in case
Excelente, me encantó tu crónica de viaje !!

this sounds and looks like a great tripwe dont have trains that go on boats here enjoy cheers mate
What an awesome trip report à sleeper train that goes on a ferry very scenic and an interesting experience don't know anywhere else where that happens definitely best part of the video but also Milan Centrale Station has some great architecture and the refurbished or new coaches look good
Seeing as we in the UK get very hot summers nowadays it would be a good idea to maybe paint some rails while like in Italy would mean reducing rail buckling and speed restrictions
Hope you did plenty of exploring in Italy very good destination to go to
😊🇮🇹👍👍
Riding the ferry on train was cool, but I’m sure with the cost of the trip I would have been disappointed that they didn’t include a dining car for convenience
Dylan, very enjoyable trip! I was unaware that a train could be transported on a ferry.
