    Hearing what Woody is saying in this one kinds hurts... the magic in LOTR and Harry Potter is completely different, they aren't comparable. Like Apples and Water Melons. Also, Gandalf is a multi-millennia old demigod. Dumbledore is an old man who is a powerful wizard.

      Gandalf is more akin to an angel contained to human form than a god. He is only given the power to complete his task to free the people of middle earth from Sauron. This is because a big theme in LOTR is the corruptive nature of power and the more naturally powerful the person being corrupted is the greater the damage they can inflict in the world.

    • @brandonyoung2.0
      @brandonyoung2.0 2 роки тому +7

      Sigh* I know this old but I'm just now seeing it and can't let this go unanswered. Gandalf is one of the five istari sent to middle earth by the valar. The Valar are the 14 godly entitys that have a role to play in creation and life and all things in the world. Then there are the maiar (or miai) who are lesser gods and serve the valar and are also noted as being good friends of them. The istari are maiar who as I said were sent to middle earth by the valar. The istari were sent to defeat sauron, and, as lesser gods could be sent back to middle earth any time after their mortal body dies. That is why Gandalf "came back to life" because his mission of sauron's defeat was not complete (along with the corruption of sauramon and disappearance of the blue wizards and radaghast, he was the only istari still pure and worthy of the mission). In conclusion, Gandalf would absolutely rape Dumbledore six ways to Tuesday. He's a centuries old, powerful, lesser God. And that's not even getting into his exploits in the hobbit and LOTR books- which the movies left many, many out- while you have Dumbledore who is just a mortal wizard that can swish and flick his wrist with a stick in his hand

    • @Gaboxxy96

      Sure man but if you read the lotr trilogy and the Harry potter books you will see a lot of influence from Tolkien. Dumbledore DEFINITELY is inspired by Gandalf; sure, he is kind of a demigod but he is supposed to act and to be perceived (both by people in his universe and by us the readers) as a very wise and kind old man. Dementors are also inspired by the Nazgul (though these one is fairly obvious in my opinion).

      Learning to diet and exercise so you can lose the weight and keep it off or just magically (no pun intended) make you thin and have you gain it all back since you were just handed success instead of being taught to earn it. Gandalf was an angel who was sent to middle earth as an old man, on purpose with diminished power to guide men and the elves to victory and bring about the age of man since the power of the elves was waining. Dumbledore while I'm sure powerful in his own right, is a mortal with one lifetime experience and limited by how much he can learn. Gandalf is around 2000 years old and his power is naturally granted to him, not limited by how much he could read up on spells.

    The Tolkien style magic is less incantations with a flair and flick of the wrist. It's the summoning of your intent and pushing it into existence.
    It's kind of like with D&D there's a way Wizards cast spells, and Sorcerers. In D&D, wizards learn and cast spells through learning and repeating the process of using components, moving and speaking a phrase to execute a spell. Sorcerers on the other hand are conduits of magic, they more or less focus on what they want the magic flowing through them to do and it takes shape to give them their desired effect.

    • @alexanderchippel
      @alexanderchippel 2 роки тому

      D&D uses Vancian magic, which is basically: "you trap this extra-dimensional entity called a spell on your brain and then you unleash it into the world where it will do this one specific thing."
      I think LotR is closer to magic in Call of C'thulhu. You basically have a POW stat that basically acts as your "cosmic food chain level" that lets you cast magic that is basically: "Roll some dice, if you roll low, your will is done. If you fail, you can chose to have it work anyway but it will bite you in the ass later."
      My point is that Harry Potter and D&D have ridged magic systems and LotR and CoC have fluid magic system's.

    • @Dreadnaught1985
      @Dreadnaught1985 2 роки тому

      @@alexanderchippel I disagree with your understanding of D&D magic. My way of running it at my games has always been the understanding that magical energy flows through all things at varying strengths. Diving magic comes from mortals worshiping a deity, giving them power. And the deity can give out some of that magic to their clerics, cultists or paladins. Druids in my world works similar but it's the druids tapping into the latent magic in the flora and fauna around them. Arcane magic is a manipulation of the weave formed by the tendrils of magic.
      That's why in my games, a druid, sorcerer, cleric and wizard would all have different methods for casting even the same spells. Because the wizard is repeating a practiced phrase, with a flourish and expending a component. A cleric casting the same spell may simply be calling on their deity to do the same.thing and holding out their holy symbol. A sorcerer just concentrates on his intent and manipulates their flowing arcane energy into making it manifest... Etc.
      That's why in my games counterspell isnt always straight forward, the players are told the NPC is casting a spell, all those who can see them may attempt to counter it. I mod the DC based on pertinent factors. Has the person seen this spell before? Have they seen this spell cast specifically this way before? If so the DC is reduced. If not, do they speak the language it's being cast in? Are the familiar with this flavour of spell caster? The reason I see it is a counter spell is attempting to disrupt the flow of magic being used for the spell, but depending on the intent of the spell you could make no difference. The more familiar someone is with the spells and the casters the better reward. Otherwise nobody cares about arcana training.

      You freaking nerds.
      There were 2 theories of magic in Middle Earth. Essence and Channelling. Elemental types, mages, and bards are into Essence where you are pulling natural energies that exist within Creation…. Channeling is usually healers, animists, paladin type where they are drawing energy from a sentient or semi-sentient entity or deity type creature… such as The Valar.
      EG. Gandalf was Olorin, the Maia servant of Manwe…. So it could he argued in Gandalf’s magic he was Channeling Manwe…. also he had the Ring of Fire.. which had elemental Essence.. but as been mentioned he is pretty much a Demi-God🤷‍♂️. But beyond lesser gods most cannot do both such schools.

    I could be wrong about this but:
    The room of requirement actually is interesting and not just used in this moment.
    It also presents itself in the most interesting way when something, oddly enough, needs to be lost.
    When Harry decides he must get rid of the half blood book the room of requirement presents itself as a huge room full of unlimited items, infact I think a horcorux was hidden in there by voldemort. And the only reason anyone could ever locate it is becuase Harry technically is a part of that horcorux so he could simply feel its presence

Until that job is complete he's immortal basically, and even after it's complete he just goes back to Valinor where he assumes his original form.

    It's hard to argue who's stronger because Dumbledore has incredibly strong magic, but in the end is just a "normal" mortal being. Gandalf has arguably weaker magic but is a magical being which could easily give him the edge. I can't see the spells from Harry Potter killing Gandalf in one shot like they do in the Harry Potter universe.
    Another thing that makes it difficult to compare is the fact that Harry Potter is based in reality to a point, while LOTR is a completely fantasized world. While Harry Potter has more in depth magic (since that's entirely the focus of the series, wizards) LOTR has fantasy characters that aren't bound to just using magic, many of them ARE magic by our standards in the sense that they live for thousands of years or have supernatural abilities.

    the way magic is in Harry Potter, every spell was created by someone who was capable of wielding magic and Hogwarts teaches all of the useful spells that have been created throughout history. Merlin is a character in the Harry Potter world, so I'd assume that someone like Gandalf, or even Gandalf himself, also existed and spells they've created are part of the curriculum. LotR takes place before the Age of Man, so it's entirely possible that at that point in time, magic wasn't as well understood and the HP universe uses that magic to it's full potential since there's been thousands of years of people creating spells.
    Dumbledore would whoop Gandalf in a duel since Dumbledore has a significantly higher knowledge of magic. It's not that either one is more powerful than the other, it's that the world of HP has more developed magic that's taught to ALL people capable of using magic.

    Gandalf is incredibly powerful but he mostly works through manipulating events and setting things in motion, he obviously aids in these events but he's not really meant to solve the problems explicitly for the humans, hobbits, or even elves he's basically an avatar of the Gods to help counter the presence of Morgoth's tainting of Middle Earth, otherwise he wouldn't be there, the Gods want the mortals to figure it out on their own but because of Morgoth and Sauron the Gods were willing to intervene a little bit. In a 1 on 1 battle Gandalf could completely fuck Dumbledore, he's not really shown doing crazy magical things because that wasn't his place, but he did kill a Balrog and basically died and came back even more powerful than before.

    Some of Taylor's complaints can be explained by reading the books as so much gets left out of the movies.
    Also i think it's silly to complain about "lazy writing" in a book with endless magic. You could make that argument with anything in the series. Harry's mom sacrificed herself, thus casting a protective charm over Harry. The charm then blocks a supposedly unblockable curse, defeating Voldemort and linking them via a soul connection, protecting Harry even more.
    Why even watch something with magic if you're going to poke holes in the magic?

    Harry Potter is a real conflicted series. On one hand, it’s excellently written and filled with enough mystery, whimsy, and depth to be entertaining and engaging at pretty much any stage of life at any amount of rereads. The movies are all good, and remain foundational classics in the lives of a lot of people.
    On the other, it ultimately stands for nothing. Harry as a character serves largely as a blank slate for the audience, and thus a slate for Rowling. Harry doesn’t beat Voldemort by defeating what he stands for, he beats Voldemort by tricking him into some obscure “gotcha” to kill himself. Voldemort is a fairly obvious metaphor for fascist movements throughout history; he leads a movement of wizard elites and political extremists through a violet revolution. All harkening back to the legacy of Salazar Slytherin, the OG British wizard racist.
    Harry doesn’t beat Voldemort by raising a real counter revolution, he raises one in favor of maintaining the status quo, a status quo that allowed for Voldemort’s rise in the first place. Harry has no intention or desire to Improve the system, just join it and maintain it. His endgame is becoming an auror, the wizard FBI. Harry stands for nothing, because Rowling stands for nothing. Harry can’t be anything more than a vessel for Rowling’s politics, and her neoliberal worldview can’t act or accept anything beyond the legal limits of the given system. That’s why liberals never get anything done, they scoff and turn their heads at acts they deem immoral, but wait for some obscure legal Gotcha to take care of the problem rather than buckling down and removing it themselves.
    And on the third, mysterious floating hand, despite the problems listed above, Harry Potter remains a likely eternal classic. Rowling, for reasons known only to her, has decided to update the canon of her world through tweets and blog posts until it became so twisted with bizarre hamfisted attempts to keep her world up with modern political norms, to keep it consistent with the present perpetually. Yet, she also made the race of bankers small hooknosed goblins, who just love money, which is really god damn funny. There’s also a Star of David on the floor of gringotts bank, google it, it’s some of the wildest shit you’ll see.
    In conclusion, fuck you

      You clearly didn't read the books then. Harry is NOT an empty vessel, he's extremely sassy, he's a natural leader, he has a clear view of what he stand for and he fights for it. Think about it: with everything he went through, the normal thing would be to just give up and be a dick, but he never did that. He was always good. Until the end even, when he had *the most powerful wand in existence* and still decided to not use it, because doing the right thing is more important to him than having power.
      And the message JK is sending with the story is very clear: it doesn't matter how "powerful" you are if you don't have love and friendship to straighten and guide you. Harry survives because of his mother's love when he was 1, then he survives again because of a mother's love when Draco's mother lies to Voldemort in order to try and save her son, Voldemort himself was the way he was because he was born from a relationship that didn't have love and never felt a mother's love...
