One of the things that really impresses me with the sopranos is how it uses cuts to assist in story telling or to make a point, like when the guy gets his car robbed by a couple black guys, and he shouts the gamer word and gets told off by his wife. The scene ends with him asking his wife "well who else would it be?" Only to have it cut to Tony looking at a picture of the guy's car, revealing that he was the one who hired the black guys to steal the cars for him.

The wire is hands down the best show I've ever seen not HBO but recently I was impressed with the Last Kingdom on Netflix and an Australian show called Mr Inbetween about a hard man/hitman which is surprisingly good. If you have never heard of Mr Inbetween I highly recommend searching out a few clips from UA-cam to get a feel of the show
i highly recommend to you an italian series called "gomorra la serie". it's the darkest mafia show i've ever heard of. as much as i love the sopranos, gomorra makes the sopranos look like the kiddie version of italian mafia. once you've watched even just the first season of gomorra, you'll know what i mean.

Oz turns into an almost unwatchable self-parody midway through.
Nope, it doesn't. Season 1 to 4 the show is a masterpiece. Season 5 is ok, while season 6 is the ridiculous one. People like you always have a case of selective memory but the most of the show was a masterpiece.

@@FuzzyDlop My memory is pristine. Each season of Oz is worse than the last but everything starts going topsy-turvy in the second half of Season 4.
The last season goes totally off the rails but I feel it really stayed consistent until that point.
It's a dumb show. "We're gonna do an 'experiment' except it's still just a normal prison except now there's more rape and killing then ever before, and for some reason the mayor keeps getting re elected by running on a campaign to take away TV in the prison that is apparently very important but has no oversight"

The Wire Season 2 is honestly pretty great on rewatch.
i thought season 1 was amazing. just watched it for the first time but i can barely get through the first episode of season 2
Season 2 went from being from my least favorite season on my first watch to one of my favorite seasons on my 2nd watch and Ive heard many people feel the same.
It does feel like almost a completely different show comparing to the rest of the seasons though, so I can see why it can be off-putting during the first watch through
Season 4 might be the best season of any show hands down imo
I really like Season 2, I don't know why it gets hate. I think Sobotka is a great character.

The man who played Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri was a real mobster . And he spent a lot of time in jail. All of his movements reflect that. Actual gangsters all say that he really made the whole thing believable.
I read he had more times in jail, than acting jobs when they hired him .

Yup, Tony Sirico was never "made" but was a high level associate of the Colombo Family during the Gallo wars in the late 60s/early 70s. When Paulie says "I survived the 70s by the skin of my nuts"....he aint kidding

I've not seen oz for a long long time but I thought it was brilliant to be honest.....I got no time for game of thrones or any othe dungeons and dragons type shows though.

Same. I didnt know how it ended but I knew everyone hated it. It wasnt a terrific season and felt rushed. But I wasnt waitimg 8 years for it so it didnt bug me.

ikr. it still stings after years have passed. i've actively stopped myself from reminiscing too much from seasons 5-8. for me, only 1-4 aligns with the books.

Sopranos also has the best writing by far. I'm Rewatching Oz and in some parts its like a child wrote it, everyone is way too direct and theatrical. They do not talk like real people lol.
I have to disagree. The Wire has better writing. There's so much subtle detail to the Wire that some of the nuances of the scene you won't pick up on until you've watched it multiple times.
For instance, one of the opening scenes talks about how to play chess. D'Angelo starts talking about how each of the pieces can be moved and their importance on the board. The boys start naming people they know who remind them of those pieces: Avon Barksdale as the king, Stringer Bell as the Queen, etc. one of the boys learning the game is named Bodie and Bodie is transfixed on the pawns and tries to apply checkers rule sets to Chess stating that if he can get the pawn to the other side he gets to be king. To which D'Angelo replies "Nah, pawns be out the game early." And Bodie responds "unless they some smart ass pawns." In real life chess pawns can never become King but if they reach the other side they do get to bexome a Queen to move freely along the board.
Fast forward a bit and Bodie is fighting to keep his street corner. If you watch his movements you will see that when he shoots he always shoots diagonally, like how a pawn does on a chess board. The 2 attackers he is aiming at are advancing on him, hiding behind cars, much like how Bishops move. Behind Bodie and unseen attacker moves forward through an alley and then moves left, in the shape of an L... moving like a knight.
Those subtle nuances are things that get explained early in the show and are hidden throughout the scenes that you will miss if you aren't paying close attention. The Sopranos is a great show but The Wire is on another level. The Wire is the best written show of its era for how much detail they pack into a scene and how they don't insult the audience's intelligence by constantly spelling it out or dumbing it down so the audience gets the "full story" of what the writers are trying to show.
I just wanted one more year. After that, I'll step down no problem.

Game of Thrones, westworld and all new CGI tv shows are not in the same box of OZ, Sopranos and the Wire. it was a complete different generation of television when the CGI was not the main topic in television but the acting was

For me game of thrones is actually the second best show all time🤷♂️it’s the wire and game of thrones above every other show. Westworld became bad, but it’s still better than Oz.
I've seen them all but oz is my least favourite but I love the rest game of thrones being my favourite but I do prefer the books

Batman The Animated series of The 90's But The Container is Garbage Transfer it to a Case.
Also Hercules The Legendary Journey's a Time Capsule for Sure but Good. Also the Sets are Used in The LOTR Movies and Spartacus and You Can See It.
The only way you can really hate on GoT the way people do is if you're not looking at it as just a blip in history, but expecting some grand conclusion. This was never going to be a happily ever after, or end of the world thing like everyone seems to have wanted.
Of course Destiny's only take away from the Wire, is "muh systems"...
Turns Oz is what The Last of Us is for folks that don't play the game.

@@fyfoh I think season six is still great and has some really good moments. Battle of the Bastards is still one of my favourite battle scenes on TV.
Season 5 is when they ran out of book to adapt. It's def worth a watch. Season 6 only for Ramsey and the battle of the bastards
during the last season of game of thrones is when i started watching it. watched the entire series within 2 weeks and lined it up perfectly with the finale. could not have done it any better.
I just rewatched all of Oz and it is absolutely a terrible show, most episodes are terrible and entertaining at the same time. The acting is good but from a quality of narrative, writing, realism and logic, standpoint its god awful. It's basically a cartoon.

The episodes are real there is not hope in prission, the Gangs are perfect, the action is perfect the Gore is so over the top, it is not like a Disney or netflix prission show people like you might be use to

Oh yeah, real perfect, they totally let prisons dress however they want and wear street clothes and bring guns into prison. They always get to use the phones and check the mail and have unrestricted unsupervised access to multiple areas of the prison all the time. So perfect. lol, lmao even
