  • I made this chalice out of Black Walnut, Black Oak Burl & Charcoal Colored Lexan Polycarbonate with a captive ring. I have seen so many videos with epoxy, but I wondered if it was possible to use Lexan epoxied to different colored woods. I may expand and experiment with this more in the future with more turning projects, and maybe some cutting boards as well.
Check out some of the other things I have made on my Facebook page:

Awesome piece mate. I was a bit unsure when you said a captive ring, but it worked out. Turning with that lexan is a great idea, it turns well and is something different than epoxy.
    Keep on turning.
    Cheers, Bluey 👍

Thank you Bluey! The Lexan is actually pretty difficult to turn. It's a pretty hard material, and likes to chip easily if the tool isn't razor sharp. I had to keep sharpening quite a few times during this project. I have quite a bit of it from replacing the windows on my sailboat, so I plan on making some more stuff with it. Thank you again for watching!

Nice work, so you don't take time to wait for resin harden, 😅😅

Am I seeing things, or did you advance the main spindle with the chuck up toward the tailstock? What type of lathe is that? How do you lock it in place? Very nice goblet, by the way.

Thank you Tony! No, you're not seeing things at all. That is exactly what happened. The main spindle moves, and not the tailstock. I am currently working with a 1950's ShopSmith, which is not ideal to use, but it works for now. I just have to be more patient, and it takes a little more time to make stuff. I have a new Grizzly G0694 lathe that should be here in a couple of weeks, which is a massive upgrade from what I'm using right now. I can't wait to use it.

Thank you very much! I have some Lexan I got from a friend (who bought too much) to replace my sailboat windows, and I have a lot left over.
