- In this video I show you how to create a Crystal special effect using the Mutant Crystalz special effects paint by DNA paints.
This tutorial covers spraying the base colours as well as how I apply the crystals and finally spraying over this unique special effect with a red candy.

To make crystal formule use: 100ml water 100ml Uréia (you find in agriculture shop) 5ml soap.
Do you know if this would work on waterbased acrylic paint?
Yes, that is true. very easy to make mutant crystal liquid with low cost 😊
@@RonGotSole Water-based paint will dilute when you apply the formula, I don't know if it works, but if you test it, let me know the result.

Thank you and yes it’s super cool, I would recommend using a ‘build clear’ so it can be sanded smooth and then you can paint over it 👍🏻

New viewer. I'm guessing that monster of an air brush you used with the silver is the reason you use a shop compressor?

How long are you allowing each coat of paint to dry before moving on to the next step?
the black coat after crystal, should I wait until black coat fully dry or like nearly dry?
Did you apply the solution whilst the silver was still wet? Or waited for it to dry
It is best for smaller areas.
I haven’t tried it on anything large🤔 , but I think with any effect it works best as a small feature or as a background for artwork etc 👍🏻
Can I create the same/similar effects with acrylic paints? (Because I have to paint indoors.) What are all my options for making cool effects but with water based materials?

My car is silver can I just clear coat over the crystals. I just like the effect and don't want to do any color changes.
I have a gun stock I would like to do this process on and my question is can I use rattle can paint? so I don't have all that expensive paint laying around that I won't use and go to waste.

What are your drying times in-between each step? Will this work with water based airbrush paint? My thought is when you wet the crystals with water to be scrubbed off, all the black paint would come off as well.
allow the part to cure 30 min at 20 c use a hair dryer on low to be sure its fully dry and use warm to hot water and use your hand to remove the mask effect
Does this stuff have a shelf life? Used this 6 years ago, and just found half a bottle left over….might give it another go. 👍

We havent tested on a canvas. Canvases are flexible so not sure if it's going to work. You could give it a go, it may have issues with adhesion. refer to TDS: dna-paints.com/wp-content/uploads/Mutant-CrystalZ-TDS-V1.5.pdf

so can you mask off a large area say for a skull and do this crystal method to have it in the back ground?
Yes you can mask a section and then crystallize, just make sure it’s a vinyl or fine line tape on the edge as otherwise it may deep through ? As you are applying the crystals heavily with a cloth 👍🏻
What is the black paint you used, is it a water based or urethane paint?

It happens fairly fast , I think from memory it was raining the day I filmed this so prob around 20oC or just under 👍🏻

I've read that force-drying the solution ( hair-dryer or heat gun ) produces finer/smaller crystals.

You could add a mini flake into an intercoat clear and try that or better yet do the flake first and then experiment with doing the crystal over that then candy 😉🤘🏻
Is there any way to control the consistency of the effect or size of the crystallization?
You can definitely play around with it by adjusting the level of crystalz applied, the direction of how you apply it, it all just comes down to experimentation.

Does the mutant crystal have to be applied with a rag as you did or can it be sprayed onto the surface and still achieve the same look?
As far as I know using the dish cloth is the best method , not sure if it can be sprayed 🤔
You can spray products like this using spray bottles or those spray paint systems that employ a jar and your own paint with an aerosol can of propellant (cant remember the name, sorry). Brushes and rollers can be employed as well. All will give different results, and the technique, direction of movement, and application method all effect size and direction of crystal growth. It's important to experiment on multiple surfaces before applying to the final surface because even the topography of the surface your painting effects the crystals. For instance I was doing a job and the crystals emphasized the edge of a surface on one side but not the other and it ultimately looked disjointed. I opted to repaint. Sanding direction changes crystal direction growth immensely and can be used to manipulate how they grow.
You can get interesting effects by wetting some areas before others, or by varying the volume applied in different areas. I often use an old hairspray bottle to apply these crystal products because it provides an even and very thin mist while still being easy to use and disposable and capable of wetting a relatively large area rapidly
Note.... my experiences were with a similar product but a different brand. Best advice is to experiment. Get a bottle and waste it just playing around.
One additional note... if you attempt to spray, make sure you use a larger opening, not an airbrush, I wouldn't use anything smaller than 1.6

how long did this take from start to finish including crystal formation time?
its all temp related, it can take hours, apply sparingly from a spray bottle less is better allow the effect to cure lightly coat it and let it dry

I've tried to make this stuff on my own with urea fertilizer and water with dishsoap. It comes out with some stick patterns, but it doesn't come out like this. Maybe you just gotta get the real thing. Your's looks almost 3d

* I have some doubts and I would like your help:
1) what type of silver in spray can you recommend that it be of very good quality and can achieve the same effect?
2) When you apply your candy red over the silver, do you put some kind of sanding sealer clear on top of that, to protect your marble effect, before applying your 2K Polyurethane final clear coat?
3) Does the silver paint have a clear coat on it before applying the crystallizer? or is it just the painting.

I tried this out and got serious beading, let me with a white beady mess. It's there a paint and/or canvas material that doesn't work with this technique?
