      @@lexington476 I wasn't aware of the tabletop game until about 30 minutes ago. I was thinking more of the early 2000s PC (and XBox) game. It was a crazy, silly, arcade-y flight game that was something out of the most loony-bin fantasies of every child who became infatuated with airplanes. If you imagine proto-WW2 aeroplanes zipping through 1930s NYC with zeppelins unloading broadsides at each other, that's a pretty good summation of one of the harder levels.
      Also, it had really good graphics for its time. The clouds were especially pretty. Volumetric clouds were very unusual for that time.

      @@BjornTheDim yeah it was like the last major new game released by FASA before they folded. I've been a BattleTech board game player since about the early '90s, it was in the advertisement I was aware of Crimson Skies.

    The flammability of hydrogen was the Achilles Heel of the Zeppelins. But the US Navy was more than interested in rigid airships. Some Ex-Zeppelins were taken over by the Navy as War Reparations, some were contracted from the German firm post war, and Goodyear license built some. The US Navy could use Helium, which was not flammable, as America had a virtual monopoly on that gas. However they were huge and susceptable to violent upper atmosphere weather. And too slow to outmanuever storm fronts. Meteorology was primative in that period. Of four airships commissioned, only one survived to be decommissioned in 1939. That was the USS Los Angeles ZR-3, and she was German built as LZ-26.

    This was a fun one to learn about Falcon. It's so weird that two completely different and somewhat arcane vessels, an airship and an actual ship with sails met up, let alone got captured by the crew of the airship. I also dug your nifty costume changes there LOL Glad to have you back and look forward to your next vid.

    It's always interesting the small things that seem to get forgotten in history, I knew the zeppelins were used in bombing of London and other areas, but I had no idea they were used to target convoys. Makes you wonder what other little historical tidbits about aviation are out there...

    6:18 one of the main reasons airships aren't in widespread use for commercial transport. There is pretty much nothing that can be done about strong winds, they will always control the movements of a airship due to the sheer volume of the things.

    And the US Navy also had airships both blimp and rigid frame as well. The Helium Act of 1925 authorized the procurement of land that had the potential to produce helium gas and banned the export of helium. This along with the creation of the Federal Helium Reserve ensured that the United States would have a supply of helium for their airships while also ensuring that other nations had to use hydrogen for their own ships.
    USS Akron and USS Macon were not just rigid airships, they were flying aircraft carriers which is truly wild to think about

      I guess. I forgot from whom philosopher I read this story: a pirate caught by Alex d Great complained:" if I use one ship, it's piracy while when you use a fleet, it's called empire building".

    • @Britt20654
      @Britt20654 5 місяців тому

      @@shaider1982 the state can do many things the individual can’t: impose taxes, have courts, operate a military. Taking a prize is not unique in that regard. That definition of piracy is taken from the leading case on piracy in the US

    • @Britt20654
      @Britt20654 5 місяців тому +1

      @@shaider1982 also you don’t need to use a ship to commit piracy. If you use physical force or the threat of physical force to deprive someone of their property (robbery) on the high seas you have piracy. So if you were to rob a passenger on a cruise ship while the ship is underway on noninternal waters that is piracy, which is very unfortunate for you because US law has but one punishment for piracy and it is imprisonment for life without parole.
