It’s also entirely possible that Gunther did some damage and the Japanese pilot performed a forced landing from which both he and the seaplane recovered.
Extensive and effective video for being under 15 minutes. The RC replica footage was cool. Goes to show that there are few options to work with. Had to be hard finding video stuff to fill up this video. Great job finding appropriate video and photos, even if tangentially, to use without reuse. Your information and writing are great too, of course. Wood replacement parts for the planes arriving rotted never occurred to me before. Neat! 🤖📸
Regarding the air to air combat, I'm reminded of a clip I saw on the History Channel like 20 years ago. I *believe* it was a veteran of WW1, but I could be remembering incorrectly. Either way, they said "In the early days, planes from opposing sides would fly past and we'd wave at each other. Then one day some idiot pulled out a pistol and started shooting and ruined it for the rest of us." I always thought that was a pretty hilarious way to look at it.
It's always interesting to see historical debates over who did what first. Regardless of whether he has the first kill or not. The fact he was the only one flying against an entire Navy air fleet is impressive. And the whole having parts rotten by the time they arrive so you have to manufacture them locally is fascinating.
If he wasn't lying Gunther must've been a heck of shot. Hitting a moving target with a pistol shot is difficult enough. He managed to wound the pilot severely enough to cause a crash.

@fightertales those who are much more educated than me, say to make a positive impact on those around you. John Oliver's quote on a horse..." if you were going to fuck one horse...it should be this one." I hope clears everything up. Thanks for the work you do, and I hope this made you laugh! Cheers
Pluschow's story is the definition of EPIC. I tried looking for a copy of the book about him, but it's hard to find an affordable copy. On a separate note, have you considered covering the Italo-Turkish war of 1911-12? All the "firsts" in combat/aviation happened in that war. And as bad as the Italians were in that colonial nonsense, the flyers deserve a lot of credit for what they endured and achieved. Aviators really were made tough back in the day!
@@fightertales I now know that that’s a thing, but no, me and a buddy bought a dog fighting themed board game appropriately called dog fight, and we intend to replace the game pieces with painted minis.
Rather shocked that the WoWS ad was not a shambolic dumpster fire al la LaserPig. Maybe he should watch it and use its content for evil rather than good
Wrong: "January 24, 1913, saw the first naval co-operation mission in history, which took place over the Dardanelles. Aided by the Royal Hellenic Navy destroyer RHNS Velos, 1st Lieutenant Michael Moutoussis and Ensign Aristeidis Moraitinis flew the Farman hydroplane and drew up a diagram of the positions of the Turkish fleet, against which they dropped four bombs. This was not the first air-to-ground attack in military history, as there was a precedent in the Turkish-Italian war of 1911, but the first recorded attack against ships from the air."
@@fightertales from my understanding a shore base. But I am not sure since I haven't found a lot of information. But it makes lot of sense. This is probably material for your future videos. Keep up the great work, I just thought that I needed to put the comment here so you can maybe come up with your own conclusion since you are more knowledgeable on aviation than me 😁
Also, just for transparency, I did initially title this video: "The first use of planes in a naval battle" From what I'm finding, the above case, the planes were not launched from a Seaplane Carrier as the Japanese had.
Everyone over-claimed air to air kills during the World Wars. A lot of that is just “it’s smoking and diving, so I guess it’s dead.” Or, “there were 4 pilots shooting at the target, but we all scored that kill ourselves, right?”

Oh it definitely is an interesting story regardless of the validity of the kill or not.
It's unbelievable how high quality your videos are. Well done 👍
thanks m80. Means a lot!
Why no more views? Awesome video
Thank you! This will go live to the public in a week's time when Brandon finishes his half of the project

Didn’t know there were aircraft carriers during WW1, pretty cool
Seaplane Carriers were definitely a thing!

Had the hand-dropoed bombs hit, were they large enough to have been effective? I'm surprised they didn't bring mini torpedoes instead.
Air dropped torpedoes literally just did not exist in operational capacity yet
I also believe the bombs were only 10 pounds or so, which would have killed crew on deck, but done little structurally.

A German lying about an aerial kill. Shocking.
