Your sea strainers are a joke for those engines. Consider looking up a sea chest and see if you could install one during your first haulout. Much more capacity for water flow, valving, and clearing of the much larger strainer.

As someone who's worked on Cats, I know a new starter will set you back a few quid. Here in America, it would be anywhere from 200 to 400 dollars. However, removing the starter and having it rebuilt will be significantly less. Hey, a new one would be the better option, but we all have to economize where we can.😜😜😜

Exactly what I was thinking. Pull it off and give it a good clean along with good quality graphite grease on all of the moving parts. The missfire could be a gummed up injector or a sticking valve. Both of which could be encouraged to function again with diligent use of a suitable hammer.

A consistent misfire is usually a non functional injector (clogged or not getting a pulse from the injection pump. Diesel knock on run down after engine is revved is probably a dribbling injector. That can also cause hunting under load as fuel burns inconsistently.
Pull the suspect injector. If the tip is wet it’s dribbling. If it’s dry, check all the others. There’s a whole list of other tests that involve pressure gauges and all sorts of skills.

Mount a safety board at the door entrance, minimum of two pairs of ear defenders , two pairs of oil resistant gloves for both Simon and Gemma. Dermatitis and hearing loss are no joke. If you have to walk past the board to gain entry it will become second nature to put them on. Spent 30 years round that size engines, all I have is slight tinnitus . Not bad, but that’s after adopting a safety regime with safety boards.
The starter and solenoid can be stripped on a bench and cleaned . By the sound of it when you got the stater going, it just needs the contacts cleaned in the solenoid and a degrease and re grease of the starter and bendix , no different to a car starter just bigger..
Alternator could be old dry belts and dirty pulleys . If the belt is old , they dry out and slip. Remove the belt and restart the engine to check, again, just a bigger version of a car system. Another old trick is with the engine stopped, trickle some thin oil (penetrating fluid will do) down the back of the front pulley on the alternator and see if that quiets it down. If it does then you could tear down the alternator and replace the bearings yourself. I’m sure Simon’s done the above hundred of times, sorry if it feels like trying to teach you to suck eggs 😂
Anyway, Sarinder is looking fantastic with the new forward deck. Looks stunning viewed from inside , shame it has to insulated really. All that hard work hidden.
Remember the wiring has to be tinned copper for a marine vessel due to corrosion from the sea air. When the time comes, give me a shout and I’ll come and help with the wiring.

You need to get a bigger water strainer, top above the water line clear top then you can see if needs cleaning. Also the top being above the water means you can open it without shutting down the engine or closing the seacock. Hope that helped I ken not at the moment but after you haul out. Plus you need to shut that valve down quicker.

Thanks, very interesting, and it gave me the info that I wanted. You already said you are going to have to operate the boat commercially. Someone else already noted that if this is the case, there are probably law(s) in place that say you will have to have a certain level of skippering qualifications. I also reckon you will need to have some pretty good insurance in place if you are going to have paying passengers - even if they are your friends and subscribers. I've no idea how much that will cost, but I can make a guess. Now, the interesting bit. The CAT3306 engine burns 20 US Gallons of diesel an hour at full power. So let's say you will be cruising at about around 15 GPH. At current prices, 30 Gallons at around 5 quid a gallon makes for a fuel cost of 150 GBP per hour. A quick guess on insurance - add 5 quid an hour. You are going to have to put money by for regular maintenance, haulouts, painting etc. So let's allow ten quid an hour for that. So, I reckon that 165 GBP per hour would not be too far from reality. It depends how far you want to go doesn't it? She'll cruise at about ten knots, maybe a little more. So the shortest channel crossing would take a couple of hours. So Dover to Calais would be about 300 to 350 GBP. To get down to the Med would be around 1000 miles, so 100 hours. It may take a little less, so let's say 80 hours cruising. Total cost to get into the Med would be around 13,000 GBP. That number sounds huge. Have you done this math yourself yet, what have I got wrong? Maybe you will be able to cruise at 10 GPH, but I don't know what speed that will give you. I would be interested in your thoughts. If I have got this wrong and am way off, I don't mind being put right.

I have to say, just looking at the engine plumbing is a huge intergraded system in itself. I would have to see, read and trace where each pipe, hose and connection comes from and to. But once it made sense to me, maybe I could work on those engines... Thumbs Up!

You can get the starter rebuilt, or even DIY! they are not rocket science and all the parts will be available. It sounds like the switch contacts at the end of the solenoid are dirty, or the starter needs new brushes. If the solenoind clicks in but the starter doesnt run those are the things to check!

You could probably get the Starter Refurb'ed, be a damn sight cheaper than a new 'un . . .

seems to me that the raw water intake reduces down to too small of a size for those motors
