    • @wmnoffaith1
      @wmnoffaith1 3 роки тому +31

      I'm pretty old now, lol, so I've seen this phenomena develop from the beginning. It's the extreme vanity that started, coupled with people no longer understanding the concept of negotiating. People used to haggle or negotiate to arrive at a price both the buyer and seller found acceptable; then, if the buyer really didn't have enough funds, barter was involved. eg. I'll babysit your children free or mow your lawn free for a month. Or "I'll remodel and refinish your basement, or lay sod in your backyard, if you'll do photos for my parents Golden wedding anniversary.
      However now, due to conceit and entitlement, mixed with not understanding negotiating, the minute someone says, "Sorry, I can't work for that cheap", they go right in for Ad Hominem arguments. In other words, it used to be the buyer would offer $300, and the seller $600, and they would settle at $450. Now the buyer offers NOTHING, and when the seller says no, the response is, "You're a poopy face, and I hate you!!!!!". It's like they haven't evolved past middle school, and it's the fault of parents and teachers.
      When these people were little and didn't get their own way, they threw a tantrum; instead of the parents saying, the more you yell and carry on, the less likely a chance I'm going to give it to you, they caved and gave in. Instead of parents sending the kids to their room, and apologizing to others for their kid's bratty behavior, they said, "Sorry, my child is sensitive and they need to get their own way, otherwise they may hyperventilate and need to spend the day curled up with their stuffed animals and extra therapy sessions. How dare you not give in to them!!!"
      It probably didn't help that their mother's name was Karen, and the children were raised to be Karenettes, LOL. BTW, I love these videos. And I love even more seeing these people get the reality checks they should have gotten 20 years ago, when they were being raised to believe they were the center of the universe. And when they are outed on Social Media, so much the better> It's like giving them a series of rabies shots by a bunch of badasses. 😎.

      Professional artist here. I charge way more than any of these people do.... But seeing how I went to college and spent like 15 years of my life doing classes, college, etc. plus those years and more practicing and improving, I would say that deserves a lot more money. Then of course time, materials, etc. add in to it...
      My first time experiencing these type of people I was a teenager and an adult promised to pay me to draw something for her. So I drew it, gave it to her, and she gave me candy as "payment." Sadly, I was living with my abusive parents who would torture or kill me over anything so I couldn't defend myself (I had to draw in secret as they believe art is from the devil) so I never got paid... But now free of those monsters I have never let anyone take advantage of me and my art ever again.
      But now I have a stalker who has been stealing my art and slandering my name... Trying to figure out who they are... My art that I love so much is being hurt and... It's really hard....

After the set, I met with the main guy and asked him his price. I was a bit stunned at the response - about 40% more than I expected. I was about to counter, but then said to him, "You can't very well say that you support local artists and then beat them up on price, so 'OK.'' We saw them out many times afterward and at a gig about 18 months after our party, we were both pretty tipsy after a show and I asked, "Hey, I paid you more than anyone has ever paid you guys for a gig, didn't I?" He got a sheepish smile and said, "Yeah." I just said that I will wear that as a badge of honor. =D #supportlocalartists

    As a former cosmetologist and nail tech, I get this on every level...... at first, after a 2.5 year appretniceship, 10,000 Euro in schools/getting certified, I would do stuff free or really cheap for friends and even small events, trying to get connections. After doing this a few times, I realized that it is selling my effort under it's worth, and not fair to 'real', paying clients or other craftsmen/artists.
    So I stopped. Even if you are a friend, some kind of reciprocation is expected ( I do your eyebrows, you help me dye my eyelashes. I do your nails, you watch my guinea pigs for the weekend I go on a trip). With not-so-close acquaintances, money is required, seeing as we are not affiliated besides this service.
    Those nails, every color costs money. Every rhinestone, and all the basic materials also cost money. Those products for the facial, they cost a lot. Yes, I am having fun at my job, but I gotta eat too. Oh, and I used to work 12-14 hours straight. Do people just assume it's all for fun and we get all the training and tools/materials/products for free?

    I just want to say.... the pricing listed in these the 40 - 50... that's freakin' cheap for comission work. That's $8 an hour for 6 hours of work, not even covering materials, programs, apps, tech needed. I have no doubt that these artists are actually under pricing their work. It's a very common problem for artists.

    Netflix has a bad streak of doing that. the most recent show, "Shadow and bone". same thing. They wanted free artwork, BUT they framed it as a contest to be put on promotional stuff WITHOUT credit or royalties to the artist.

      Problem isn't Netflix. it is the companies they hire that try to cut costs to make more money. Like if you hire a general contractor to build your house for 500k He hires the cheapest subs he could find so he would make more on the job. This actually happens in all walks of life from entertainment to government contracts. Netflix will pay them x amount for the show. The people they hire figure some desperate people will work for free just to get their name on a hit show while they keep a bigger piece of their payment.

This happened recently when my step-aunt volunteered me to do the senior pictures of a new employee at my family’s business. The number of people who wanted things for free or for a price that was super underpriced just made me stop enjoying doing the things I love. If I ever choose to sell anything again I'll have to have another person dealing with the customers for me. I write fanfiction (for free of course) and I frequently get requests from people for stories. Sometimes they are very specific, require a fair amount of research for me to feel ok about publishing them, etc. Half the time when I publish one of these stories, the person doesn’t say thank you and in the prompts themselves, they often write it like a demand (e.g. Write a story about this character doing xyz). I know it’s not the same as creating something for a living, but sometimes the lack of respect or appreciation, especially when someone requested that piece, is very disheartening.

    There's a saying I've frequently used; "A laborer is worthy of his hire." When I request a quote from someone I simply pay their asking price if I can afford it (normally I ask their rates up front). If I can't I simply say so and apologize. If they choose to negotiate, fine. If something comes up that results in extra work for them I offer additional money.
    Y'know, it's simply AMAZING how often treating someone fairly, rationally, and as a valid human being results in them doing their best work (and often at the best price they can manage).
