  • This is a video about doing the heat shields on my Harley Ultra Limited. I don't neccessarly follow the advice of a well known Cerakoter and pay the price. But I do figure it out and end up with some very nice heat shields. Also, the spray gun that Cerakote wants you to use is over $300.. I show the gun I use which is half the price and just as good quality, maybe better. There is a lot of tips and tricks in this video and mistakes to learn from. This is not your typical how to video, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

    In Brazil to paint these parts is used Wash Primer in Matt Black catalised as pack instructions, with few drops of dye for cement/concrete for more deep black, have good results in these specific parts, I like to see your test using these product, maybe you spend 10 bucks in these materials.

    Very good notation regarding the wipe down issue. What do you do full-time Brotha? You remind me of an old boss that was an architect but blessed with a brain that could do anything.

      Right on, I’m glad you liked it 👍. I just blew the parts off with compressed air and everything worked out fine.

    Hey, just a quick question, what did you wipe down the parts with after you blasted them?

    Do chrome pipes have to be stripped before a Cerakote coating?

    • @i.b.lancer
      @i.b.lancer  2 роки тому

      Yes. The Cerakote just won’t stick to chrome.

    The number of "powder coaters" and "ceramic coaters" out there who have NO IDEA what they are doing or even care is frustrating to those of us who really do everything necessary for the best results. Stripping, cleaning, blasting, dustoff, outgassing, priming; which steps do your coaters skip before color is applied as recommended by the manufacturer? Oh, I use an LVLP gun for ceramic/CeraCoat. Using acetone after blasting puts acetone into the pores of the metal requiring higher temp outgassing to cook it out.

      I’m the first to admit that it was a total learning experience for me. I never once claimed that I completely knew what I was doing. But in the end I got a fantastic finish. I hoped that I provided not only an entertaining video but also the lesson that the proper steps must be followed. Thanks for watching and contributing to the comments.

    Dang it i lost my comment but to summarize, I think you were spraying too much too close. adjust the needle and/or backup off the part, you're like 3" away and thats why it was running. It would have adhered still but you probably never got to dry it and test it. If you can get less material out of the gun you will waste less, and be able to control your coverage better with many more light passes than 1 big heavy pass. Also the microfiber might feel "rough" but it is made up of softer material than a 3000 grit sand paper. If what you said was true, people would have marred paint and glass left and right.

      All good points. It was a learning experience for me. I never claimed to be an expert. Just blurting out my thoughts as I went along.

      @@i.b.lancer all good thats why i wanted to explain the technique. you want to be far enough that the coating still flows when it contacts the substrate, but not too far that it just turns to dust. I don't know what cerakote recommends, but if you are able to do multiple coats (with drying and flash of between) then thats even better, you dont have to get it perfect in one shot, and you can build up light coats to full coverage that will usually cure better throughout the coating, instead of a thick coat that dries on the outside first and traps your curing agent/solvents under the skin, which could change the outcome of your coating. I guess its fine on these small parts, or maybe cerakote as a product, doesn't care - but at the end of the day we dont want runs in our coating either way.
      I know those air cooled pipes get HOT, how has the coating stood up to the conditions and have you noticed any reduction in heat from the shields?

      @@TheDiamoniteG So far they've held up beautifully. I can't say I've noticed a difference in heat reduction, seem about the same really.
