  • I got an acoustic 5-string violin! This violin was kindly given to me by Thomann, which is Europe's biggest music store. In return, I made a review video about this violin and that video is now live on the Thomann Music channel.

Besides 5-string violin and viola, there’s 5-string double bass. That would be a great one to play and get those really LOW notes.

Awesome! Congratulations on getting sponsored! I've been eyeing up Thomann's antiqued 5 string violin for a while, not sure if I'll get this though or the Glasser 6 string - that low F!! Does this make you in-scope for VIola jokes? :-) On my way to watch the review now!

Thanks a lot! 😊✨ A 6-string looks tempting indeed! But maybe an electric works better for that, because a C string on violin scale is already a struggle to get it to sound decent. And extended range is quite difficult to play, you keep hitting other strings so it needs proper practice.
And viola jokes are funny, so why not. 😜

      @@MarijkeViolin I struggle to make the G D A & E sound decent too to be honest :) lol

Maravilha, penso ser difícil tocar com uma corda a mais....Wonderful, I think it's hard to play with an extra string....

It indeed is quite tricky and needs some serious practice! I'll be making a video about that too. 🙂

Five strings! 😲 Just call me old-fashioned and old school. As for yours truly, I only play the violin of our forefathers: the veritable and venerable four-string acoustic violin. 😁🎻 🎶

    A 5-string violin or a 5-string VIOLA?

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  2 роки тому

A 5-string violin, but a 5-string viola would probably work better.

Really a violin ??? With bass C strings in more ........ or a Viola With E string added 😂

  • @theoverunderthinker

I would think a 5 string Viola would work better. to have the larger volume , deeper body to allow the C string to fully resonate = 👼..... however, it likely depends on if you can get used to a longer string length, so maybe better to not switch about if you don't already play viola.
hmmm... probably depends on what register you play in most, because either would be a compromise I guess.
forget what I said and just enjoy it! it looks very lovely!
    👍👍

True! For a real viola sound, you need a viola. But switching between different scale lengths is tough, even though I have some experience on the viola. So yes, this instrument is ofcourse a compromise, but one with the least trouble.

Wouldnt the viola body compromise the E string?
Hellen Bell plays a 5 stringed viola, by the way.

@@nocturnallsnake4228 I have two 5 stringed instruments a 14" and 16" viola. the 14" viola has taller ribs than a violin, but has the same top and back as a violin (essentially, although the neck is wider). the E string is probably equivalent to a normal violin of the same quality. The C string is not as good as on the 16" (think fractional violin vs full sized violin)
on the 16", the E string is less able to cut through than on a similar violin but also sweeter. some may like that.
to be honest, it is hard to judge with a sample of only two, but my 5 string instruments are not same as my similar sized 4 stringed instruments (full sized, 14" violin and 16" viola) but I don't have the exact same instruments to compare, so it might be the examples I have. My standard instruments are also older and my 5 strings were less expensive, but well made Chinese instruments I picked out on a trip to Beijing a while back, versus German, French or and Italian instruments (although not well known makers or anything; my go to violin is a shop made violin only about 120 years old, as an example). Solid instruments, but nothing to rest a professional career on (if that makes sense). I also have a 16.5" viola which sounds amazing, but is physically challenging to some of my joints after a while, so I don't play it as regularly. I had a 5 string violin, but it was a Zeta (electric) so not in the same conversation.
sorry to digress. my point is that I play mostly viola, so the high E string is the novelty and if I want something nicer on the E string, I just play violin instead. if I were a violin player, the low C is the novelty, and I might care less if the C string sounds exactly like a viola should.
it will always be a compromise, because it is an acoustic instrument it just depends on what you are trying to achieve and what capabilities you are trying to extend.
sorry for my rambling post, but your comment was a good one and I wanted to "explore" it fully instead of just saying "yup"
      😊
